Jonah heard from God. God told him to go to the city of Nineveh and warn them that if they didn’t stop doing wicked things, He would punish them. Jonah didn’t like the Ninevites. He rather wanted God to punish them, so he ran away to a boat that would take him as far away as possible. Jonah 1:1-3

Jonah told the men to throw him overboard. He knew God had sent the storm because he had not been obedient. As soon as they threw him overboard, the storm calmed. God then sent a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah 1:7-17

Jonah then waited outside the city wondering how God would punish the people. When he realized God wasn’t going to destroy the city, he was angry. He didn’t think it was fair. God told Jonah that he had no right to be angry. God had seen how sorry the Ninevites were and He had decided to show compassion and forgive them, because He loved these people, too. Jonah 4
