Feel the power With more output than their predecessors, these new five- and six-cylinder engines are renowned for rugged reliability and low operating costs. They’re living proof of Scania’s unique record of improving torque, fuel efficiency and driveability, while reducing emissions.   Available in seven models, from 230 hp to the awesome 470 hp turbocompound, these 9- and 12-litre bus and coach engines are part of Scania’s industry-leading platform of modular power plants. Award-winning Scania EGR technology brings you engines that meet Euro 4 environmental requirements with no additives. Plenty of torque for exceptional driveability and fuel economy

These new engines deliver up to 2,200 Nm at 1,100 – 1,450 r/min – all the power you need for relaxed performance. We call this our “Scania low-rev philosophy” where we concentrate on improving torque at low revs before overall output. The result is smoother driveability and better fuel economy.   With three new, lighter gearbox options you’ll immediately feel the difference when you downshift to tackle a steep hill. And on the open road you’ll love the extra cruising power and the higher average speeds over long distances.

For the ultimate in getting the power to the pavement you can specify our Scania Opticruise and retarder option. Scania Opticruise automates your shifting with simple settings like Drive, Hill and Reverse. The retarder controls progress on steep descents with the added benefit of enormous savings on brake wear. Both are handled with fingertip control from the steering wheel for the smoothest driving experience imaginable.

Where environmental compatibility meets fuel economy Just add diesel! Our award-winning state-of-the-art Euro 4 engines combine unique high-pressure injection with Scania EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The result is lower emissions at all times and in all conditions with the Scania hallmark of best-in-class fuel efficiency.   Scania’s EGR technology features unique patented solutions that slash emissions while ensuring better fuel economy. These engines are already well received among our truck customers in many countries. You’ll like the fact that you can fill up with standard diesel in the usual way without the need for additives.

Guaranteed compliance Scania EGR works 100 per cent of the time to reduce emissions – from the stopand-go congestion of city traffic to long-distance cruising on the open road. Scania EGR operates independently of the exhaust gas temperature to guarantee 100 per cent compliance with Euro 4 and Euro 5 at all times and in all conditions.

Cuts emissions during combustion Scania EGR ensures that polluting emissions never form in the combustion chamber. Here’s how it works: A controlled amount of the exhaust gas is cooled by an EGR cooler and recirculated into the engine to achieve a lower combustion temperature that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions to the required levels. Particulate matter is lowered by Scania’s high-pressure injection system. The result? Our Euro 4 solution cuts nitrogen oxides by 30 per cent and particulates by 80 per cent.

Alternative fuels for sustainable and affordable public transport

and beyond Many of our customers are seeking environmentally optimised power sources to avoid the net addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere that comes with fossil fuels. In addition to Scania’s highly effective 9- and 12litre diesels, we also offer engines adapted for a variety of other fuels – all based on the robust technology that has made Scania engines legendary for their reliability and fuel economy. Which fuel works best? Ethanol, RME or gas – the choice is yours Scania has chosen to focus on three established alternative fuels with growing systems of secure supply.

Ethanol is typically extracted from sugar cane or sugar beets, but can also be derived from biological wastes including wood-processing biproducts. Ethanol provides less energy than diesel and petrol, so more fuel is required than with diesels for the same amount of work. However, its liquid form makes it easy to handle. Scania is the world’s only supplier of ethanol buses and we have delivered many hundreds since the early 1990s – with remarkable environmental gains.

RME or rapeseed methyl ester, also known as FAME or fatty acid methyl ester, is extracted from rapeseed oil, which is a renewable resource. RME can be easily blended with diesel. Scania permits a mix of 5 per cent RME in diesel fuel and our newest engines with unit injectors can handle 100 per cent RME.

Gas is another popular alternative. Sources can be either natural CNG, which is a fossil fuel, or renewable biogas from waste aggregation. Gasdriven engines use the Otto principle and need more energy than a traditional diesel engine for a given task. Another consideration with gas is the need for heavy, pressurised fuel tanks, which impact range, flexibility and passenger capacity. Since the 1990s, Scania has delivered some 1,000 vehicles worldwide. Ultimately, all these solutions will find their markets. Scania is also working with hybrid solutions for heavy transport that have the potential to save 25 per cent in energy consumption. A standard bus engine is combined with robust electric motor/generators and an energy storage system. The fuel can be diesel, ethanol or gas.

The heart of a great coach For longer journeys on the open road Every driver’s dream, our 12-litre, 6-cylinder engines are available in four models, from 340 hp to the awesome 470 hp turbocompound. Scania’s unique turbocompound technology gains extra power by exploiting energy recovered from the exhaust system. The result is higher productivity, with plenty of power and torque, easy driveability, good economy and faster journey times.   Our Euro 4 engines use Scania EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) to meet strict emission standards while ensuring good economy. They feature enhanced torque curves and faster build-up to maximum power compared to the Euro 3 versions.   All 12-litre engines are equipped with Scania HPI (high-pressure unit injectors) to ensure precise combustion timing and optimal fuel economy.
