and Gordon Fraser Morrison here and before mentioned. The government and management of the club shall be vested in the Board of Directors consisting of 12 of its gentleman members” Dated the 2nd day of February, 1912.” And so we began. More than a 105 years ago. As Vice-President, and a member of the Board of Directors and former chair of our Governance Committee, I’ve had the opportunity (honour really), to dig through our historical corporate records and archives. They are abundant and fascinating. Together with the many oral stories of our members, both past and present, they convey our rich and long history. Those records and stories tell us why we came to be and the many paths we have taken to arrive at 2017.
As I lay on the floor of the Directors Lounge this past Saturday, (more on that later), I caught a glimpse of the first hole and I thought to myself that the hole did not look that different today than it did back in 1912. I also thought however, that our forefathers, in their wildest imaginations, could not have anticipated that eight of the Club’s members (half of whom were men, and half of whom were woman), would be, 105 years later, lying on the floor of their, I am sure, beloved Bob Gray Lounge trying their best to hold yoga poses as part of the Fore Yoga classes held every Tuesday and Saturday morning at the Club. (Yes Yoga….the reason for my lying on the floor.) Nor could they have ever imagined that one day we would be able to track our golf shots on a computer using Trackman at the Club’s Winter Golf Academy. Anticipating what the future holds – it’s far from a science. Yet, one of the key responsibilities of the Board of Directors is, while respecting our rich history, to look to the future. To strategize and plan, in consultation with the membership, to ensure that the Club remains relevant and provides value to its existing members and its potential members, for both today and tomorrow and the many tomorrows to come. To ensure that we thrive. And not just survive.
Over the next month, we will also conduct member and nonmember focus group sessions as part of our ongoing longer term strategic planning process. The focus group sessions will be facilitated by Global Golf Advisors one of the premier golf advisors in North America. The goal of the sessions will be to gain feedback and interest in developing new club amenities to make the Club more attractive and relevant to members and prospective members. The member participants of the focus group have been selected at random by Global Golf, stratified by age and gender. The feedback from the focus groups will be used to develop a broader based survey that will be circulated to all members in mid-June. The responses to the survey will provide direction in the development of our longer term strategic plan. The focus group meetings for non-members are being held May 16 and 18 and the member focus group meetings are being held May 23 and 24. So with a tip of the hat to our founders, we look to the future. And as for the present, here’s to a summer full of dinners on the verandah with family and friends, and to your best round ever. Namaste.
That has been particularly true for us of course since 2014, when the membership resolved to transition the Club from an equity club to a non-equity club, with full transition being completed at the end of this year. At the end of 2017, members will have options that were not available to them when Scarboro was an equity club. What does that mean exactly? It is not a one size fits all answer. To ensure members are aware of all of their options, we will hold a Town Hall during the summer to review the various transition options (including some new participation categories) that will be available commencing at the end of 2017. We will also have printed materials available as well. And of course Neil Rooney and Scott Hay will also be available to respond to any questions you may have. As for those new participation categories… we will be introducing shortly, a new Family Clubhouse category, a new out of town (Non-Resident) membership category and a new Legacy membership category available to family members. We have also developed and will roll-out a Leave Of Absence Policy for medical and non-medical reasons. Stay tuned, more details to follow.

SPOUSAL INTRODUCTORY GOLF PROGRAMME This program is a great opportunity for your non-golfing spouse to become familiar with the game and the Club. It offers an introduction to golf, access to the practice facilities, limited access to the golf course in non-peak times (after 4:00 pm). A limited membership may provide an opportunity to decide if a full trial membership is something your spouse might consider in the future. This would be a one time opportunity for one full year (April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018). The full program details are as outlined in this issue and the weekly Eblast.

This is to inform you that at Scarboro Golf & Country Club there are 3 automated external defibrillators for use in a medical emergency, located at: THE OASIS, BISTRO, AND GOLF SHOP In the event of a medical emergency, call the Golf Shop Ext. 228 or the Bistro Ext. 225. They will call 911 and ensure that EMS is properly directed. They will bring the defibrillator, oxygen and first aid kit to your location. If you have placed the 911 call directly, always inform the Golf Shop Ext. 228 or the Bistro Ext. 225 that you have placed a 911 call. This precaution will prevent emergency personnel being delayed upon arrival. There are many trained staff members who are qualified to provide first aid response with AED while waiting for emergency medical services (911) to arrive on site.
PAYMENT OF ANNUAL DUES Most members pay their dues annually but some opt to pay monthly for a modest interest fee. We have traditionally billed those dues over 12 months/payment starting in March through to February. Explaining to members that payments in December, January and February actually relate to the previous golf season is not easy. Collecting those monies as someone resigns is even more difficult. The Finance Committee made the decision to change monthly billing into 10 payments from March to December. We will implement this in 2017. The result is that your monthly payment will be in 10ths not 12ths, so the initial payments will be higher but you will not be billed in January and February starting in 2018. I hope to see you at the Club and look forward to meeting you if I haven’t already. When Superintendent bill gilkes and I started talking about it, he got assistant Superintendent lesley thomas involved and that’s when an idea became a reality. lesley, who was already well underway managing our audubon certification application, just took the project and ran with it. We got pieter basedow, director of campus liaison for the green education council, involved as he founded the u of t bees program and also looked after the hives for leanne. Our up-front investment was $8,000 to establish three hives. pieter told us that we could expect zero honey in the first year as the bees usually work all summer to make it for their first winter, but we would start to yield some in the second year. lesley focused on pulling all the various components of the project together, such as working with pieter to figure out the best location for the hives, purchase the hives, etc. by the first of June we were ready to get the bees settled into their new home. pieter as our apiarist, always had the idea of populating some of the local golf courses with honey bee hives. he found it odd that people were not aware of the thousands of acres of beautiful green space within the borders of the city of toronto and the benefit to the population at large. here is a quote from a published online article at the torontosist.com: “The hives at the Scarboro Golf & Country Club all survived last winter and are very healthy. They are doing better than the hives on rooftops downtown. It is exactly that misconception that golf courses are a chemical pit that I am trying to
20
debunk. Honeybees are like the proverbial ‘canary in the coal mine’–they are very susceptible to any chemical residues. As golf courses are now seeking environmental certification, they are looking very closely at the need for any sprays to be used on the fairways. Instead they are using different types of grasses and a more integrated pest management system not harmful to the environment.” He also notes that sustainable development of golf courses makes economic sense, as it is good for their bottom line. http://torontoist.com/2016/04/376473/
I nSpI r ed bY l e a n n e pepper’S bee program at the Faculty club, university of toronto, we investigated putting a similar program into effect at Scarboro golf & country club. last spring, we were also pursuing audubon certification so they seemed to complement each other extremely well.

We got 50 lbs. and rationed the jars for sale to members. We couldn’t keep up with the demand!
’’
by late June, everything was up and running. pieter was busy carrying out the weekly maintenance and everything that is involved with being a busy and successful apiarist looking after busy and successful honeybee hives. he reported back weekly that the hives were thriving and by august he told us that they were doing so well we could expect to harvest honey. We got 50 lbs. and rationed the jars for sale to members. We couldn’t keep up with the demand! So who cares? We are not the first golf club to introduce a bee program. the reason I’m excited about this is the impact we are having from an environmental perspective. golf clubs (unfairly) continue to have a reputation as the big bad pesticide users and destroyers of all things environmental including bees. In Ontario, golf clubs are required to hold an annual public meeting with immediate neighbours to advise them on our Integrated pest management program, and the application of pesticides. We held ours earlier this year. more than usual attended and we were so lucky to have that one person who knew with absolute certainty that our pesticides were destroying his lawn and causing his grandchildren’s allergic skin reaction, only an issue when they visited him. You could read the minds of everyone present, ‘If it’s happening to him then I must be breathing in these chemicals.’ things started to cscm.org

the thriving honeybee program is reflective of the very healthy eco-system scarboro is creating in the community.
get a little tense until pieter took the floor and explained the whole bee program, how successful it was, how much the bees were thriving and how much honey was being produced. he very confidently told the audience that these bees would not be alive let alone thriving as well as they are, if pesticides were being used at even a moderate level. then he used the analogy of the canary in the coal mine. the thriving honeybee program is ref lective of the very healthy eco-system Scarboro is creating in the community. the mood immediately shifted. that message coupled with the fact we had just become audubon certified has been a really great news story to tell. Our members love it too. the demand for the $14.95 per jar honey is such that we can barely keep up. We expect to break even on the project once the current batch of honey is sold. It will become a profit centre after that. my hope is to encourage every golf club out there to undertake this initiative. let’s get the “story” about golf clubs turned around, engage our members and local communities cscm.org

with what we’re doing to support green initiatives and make some money while we’re at it! We’re going to set up a display and sell honey to the neighbours at next year’s public meeting! thank you to lesley thomas and pieter basedow for contributing to this article. CLUB UPDATES
MEMBERSHIP MATTERS SCOTT HAY SALES AND MARKETING MANAGER
The enthusiasm and excitement for the 2017 season was in high gear at our Season Opening Night on Friday, April 21. The clubhouse was buzzing with activity whether it was our members having an opportunity to meet this year’s golf committees and staff departments, to sampling some fantastic wine and beer, to getting an opportunity to see the new Golf gear for 2017. And of course, Chef Chris did an amazing job in creating tastes from around the world with the numerous food stations available to all. With the excitement of a new season, our membership will be pleased to know that there are several initiatives in the works at the committee and board level to ensure our continued success. We will be able to announce soon the creation of new policies and categories that will allow our membership additional options to call Scarboro home for many years to come. We have also been actively promoting our new Spousal Introductory Golf Program. This program is designed to embrace nongolfing spouses an opportunity to take up the game in a less intimidating environment. We have already seen enrolment into this category and will continue to build on this momentum throughout May. Also of note, Scarboro is undertaking our next Strategic Planning Cycle. We have obtained the services of Global Golf Advisors to guide us through our Strategic Planning exercise and the first step is the initiation of member and non-member Focus Groups. The goal is to determine how Scarboro Golf and Country Club will remain relevant in the highly competitive club market. These groups will be meeting May 16th to May 24th. We are excited to discover what direction our members and future members would like to see Scarboro pursue.

After a few meetings and a presentation to Neil and Paul, I had an offer from the club. I must thank Neil and Paul for their faith in me, Tyler for introducing me to the Scarboro family and our membership for the outpour of support that you have shown. I have big shoes to fill and I embrace the challenge and excitement of this new role. At this time I would like to welcome all of the new members who joined the club in the last month and the existing members switching categories. I would also like to thank those members that referred these new members. Scarboro is happy to welcome its newest member to the Golf Shop team – Larry Longo. Larry has worked many years with the Golf Association of Ontario (GAO). With his vast experience in tournament operations, Larry will be heading up our Corporate Monday events. Larry will also be assisting in Corporate Merchandise sales, so if you have any questions regarding some corporate business, please let Larry know. Here is a welcome note from Larry: My name is Larry Longo and it is with great pleasure that I have been hired by Scarboro Golf and Country Club as the Golf Events Coordinator. Scarboro is where I grew up playing the game and I have an extensive history at the club. I have been a professional and golf administrator my entire career and most recently was the Competitions Manager at Golf Ontario. Earlier, I managed a PGA TOUR event in Calgary after having been the Director of Rules and Competitions for the PGA of Canada for over a decade.
Over the years I have seen lots of golf and officiated on all levels. Most of the time as an official, you are monitoring groups with pace of play. As a result, I have seen all kinds of time lost while playing the game. Here are some basic pace of play tips to make the game more enjoyable for everyone: • Be aware of groups behind and especially ahead of you. • Be ready to play when it is your turn. • Position your clubs or cart so that they are on the way to the next tee when you complete the hole • Record your score on your score card after you’ve left the green of the hole you’ve just completed • If possible, have your club selection made by the time it’s your turn to play One of the best times to play golf is immediately after the grounds crew has completed its daily work on the course. The tees, fairways and greens are freshly cut, holes are cut in new positions and bunkers are raked. So to ensure everyone has an opportunity to play the course in its best condition, please remember to repair your ball marks on greens (and one other if possible), rake bunkers afterwards, tap down any spike marks or scrapes and fill or replace your divots. I look forward to the opportunity of meeting you this year, so please feel free to ask for me in the Golf Shop.

On behalf of The Professional Staff and the entire Club, we would like to congratulate Scarboro’s own Ryan Nelson for an impressive victory at The CJGA Linkster Series Tournament held at Rolling Hills on Sunday, April 30. On a day that featured weather so bad that we at Scarboro only had 10 golfers between 8 am and 3 pm (on a Sunday), Ryan battled through the elements shooting an amazing +7 (70) finishing an impressive 5 strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Ryan has been a Sponsored Junior member of Scarboro, going on two seasons now. He is 13 years old and has been playing golf ever since the age of 4. He has always had a natural talent for the game, but his focus in the past has been high-level baseball. At the end of the 2016 baseball season, Ryan decided that he was going to put baseball on the backburner and make golf his main focus. He spent the entire winter working very hard on his game and it has certainly paid off for him. With his cool calm demeanor and sound golf swing, he cruised to victory in his very first competitive round of the 2017 Golf season. If you see our latest champion around the club, be sure to congratulate him on a job well done. He will likely be on the range sharpening his skills for the next big tourney. Congratulations Ryan, keep up the great work!

CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT KYLE DOCHERTY CURLING MANAGER
Championship Night is the keystone event of the curling season at Scarboro. It is a night full of great curling, fantastic food, and comradery amongst competitors and spectators alike. On April 7th, the Balmoral Lounge hosted approximately 300 people to celebrate the Champions of curling.
the 2017 recipient. Holly currently convenes Championship Night and has run numerous sections, bonspiels and events at Scarboro during her time with us. The curling section at Scarboro stands strong today because of the support and contributions made by people like Holly Lipsett. For that,
The curling season has 2 halves. The first half ends at the Christmas break and the second at the end of March. This leaves us with a winner in each section from the first and second half. Two teams who have defied all odds and claimed the top spot in their section. The obvious next step is to make them play each other with 300 people watching. At the end of the night, we are left with a dozen teams who can walk away proud knowing that they made it to Championship Night to represent their section and another 12 who leave as Champions.
we thank her greatly and congratulate her on being named the 2017 Don Campbell Award winner.
There is one section that does not operate like the rest. The Men’s Majors played on Monday night and does not separate 2 halves in the season. These men play straight through from October to March. The two teams represented at Championship Night are the two top teams in the “A” event. They have battled it out all year, playing approximately 30 games to get to this point. At Championship Night they play one more game, with the title of Club Champions on the line. This year Tom Hart played Bob Turcotte for the title. The Turcotte team was home to Roy Weigand for many years. Bob and Roy have had great success curling alongside one another for decades. They have represented Scarboro well and won many bonspiels, including the 2000 Canadian Seniors. However, the tide for team Turcotte seemed to rise when Roy’s replacement Jim Chung stepped on board. Team Turcotte went undefeated through the last three months of the season and was named our Men’s Club Champions for 2017. Overall, the night was enjoyed by all who attended, as spectators and as participants. There were 12 very good games played and we congratulate all of the winners for their success. The final award that was given out during the Championship Night was the most anticipated of the curling season. The Don Campbell Award has been presented for decades to the curling member who promotes the game of curling and the spirit of the sport within the club. This year the committee, led by Brian Roblin, named Holly Lipsett 18 | THE 19TH

GOLF UPDATES
OLD CONCEPTS, NEW METHODS BILL GILKES GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Tried and true methods have served golf courses since the sport began but things are constantly changing. We depend on top dressing turf grass with sand, verticutting and rolling and cutting greens, tees, and fairways at very low heights. Some of the things we do today are not even close to what was done 50 years ago but the end result is still healthy playable turf. This season at Scarboro, we will be doing different things using new equipments to perform some old cultural practices. We will be verticutting fairways as we have always done. The Sisis machine that was purchased last year will be used again in the spring and fall. This is a very aggressive unit that is remarkable at removing thatch from the fairways. This year, we will be rolling fairways on a regular basis. During the week, we will cut Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and we will roll Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have purchased a standalone fairway roller called Salsco. Over and above the fact that rolling will increase ball roll on the fairways, it is also found to be beneficial in the prevention of “dollar spot (our chief disease on fairways). We will see as the year goes by just how much this prevents dollar spot and our hope is to reduce our chemical use. We will also try using a pre-emergent crabgrass inhibitor that is coupled with a fertilizer for our bunker faces. You may notice a slight darkening in the color of the grass but it will be short-lived.
20 | THE 19TH
We will be experimenting with a product called Civitas on #10 fairway. This product is designed to improve the overall turf health of the individual plant creating a less susceptible grass sward. Sort of like an immune system booster for plants. It is a two part product and needs a catalyst to activate the chemical. We will be spraying only the first third of 10 fairway and again there may be some difference in color. This will grow out as we cut on a regular basis. We will monitor the fairway over the season to see if there are decreases in disease pressure and less actual activity. We have been given this product by our supplier as a test to see if it is a viable additive to our spray applications. Even though we have done basically the same things to prepare and maintain the golf course for decades, we are constantly looking for new and better methods and products to help us achieve our goal of healthy playable turf grass.

A MEANINGFUL JOURNEY HOME ALEXANDRA PAPPAS SOCIAL AND MEDIA MANAGER
As we continued to endure our (somewhat) harsh Canadian winter in the month of March, our Executive Sous Chef, Umesh Diwaker found himself back in his beautiful and richly historic homeland, Delhi, India. This incredible vacation, which allowed him to reunite with many family members, afforded remarkable opportunities to both himself, and his surrounding community. I sat down with him to delve into the details of this wonderful journey, and we thought we might take the chance to share this story with our loyal Scarboro readers. The trip began with the fulfilment of a most desired mission – coming home to family. This quest, which was the initial inspiration for his journey, was finally completed after over 14 hours of travel, when Umesh was reunited with his brothers, sisters and his father, in the city in which he was raised – Old Delhi, India. Umesh also had the opportunity to visit with longtime friends, those whom he came to know in his time at the International Institute of Hotel Management in Jaipur. Many of his friends, like Umesh have found great success in the Food Service Industry, and he always makes the effort to not only visit them, but their places of business to commend their successes. Apart from spending much desired time with friends and family, Umesh took to the streets of Old Delhi to immerse himself in the authentic India culture that defines both country and city. Along with blogger Rohit Manchanda, his closest friend from the Institute who holds great knowledge of the city, Umesh participated in an Old Delhi Walk throughout the city. The walk began at an ancient Muslim mosque, Jama Masjid. Built from 1644-1659, Jama Masjid is one of the largest and most renown mosques in the world. Though a breathtaking monument, it isn’t just sight to behold, it is also a requisite for authentic Indian cuisine. Indian street food is sold in the surrounding areas of the mosque from food stalls are known as “Khau Galli’s”, many of which have been in existence since the 1800s. These galli’s truly make the walk through Old Delhi, as authentic cuisine is a profound and integral part of India’s history; stories of British imperialism and local differentiation are present in each and every dish. The incredible walk now utilizes a newly built subway which

transports participants from the bustling city of New Delhi, to antiquated Old Delhi, where it is still common to find cows mixed amongst the crowded streets. Umesh and Rohit traveled throughout the city, visiting the well known and the unknown, from historic mansions now converted into hotel facilities, to the largest spice market in Asia. Umesh described the market as, “pungent with the aromas of ground turmeric, cumin, and nutmeg, piled high in colourful displays.” The market even has a section dedicated to chilies, with bags of fiery red peppers stacked to the rafters that will have you “sneezing uncontrollably!” At the time Umesh visited, many of the merchants, some who have stationed their business in this market for over 100 years, were busy preparing for the Holi Festival. Celebrated the day after the full moon in March, the Holi festival commemorates the victory of good over evil. Holi stands for the “Festival of Colors” and it marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season. The day is commemorated with rituals, special music and dance based events, parties, and most memorably, participants smear colored powder all over one another! It was at the Holi festival that Umesh experienced a profoundly meaningful moment. As he continued to explore the delicious street foods of Old Delhi, he came across a merchant selling delicious fried whole wheat dumplings stuffed with coconut, dried fruit, sugar and condensed milk. As soon as Umesh bit into the dumpling, he immediately thought of his mother, who passed away in 1991, as it was the exact recipe she used to make for him as a child for every Holi Festival. Umesh purchased a whole 2 kilos of the dessert to share this unforgettable and unexpected find with his family. During the latter end of his trip, Umesh paid a visit to his former place of study, the International Institute of Hotel Management, in Jaipur. He had set up a meeting with the principal months prior to his trip to discuss a possible opportunity to give back to his former community. Once given the O.K, Umesh was able to volunteer his time to work with students in their final and second year, sharing the wealth of knowledge he has gained in the industry since his graduation. The goal was to instill in
them the importance of not only food quality and taste, but the significance of food presentation and plating techniques when performing in trade tests and job interviews. Umesh had sent them a 3-course menu, and took the time to cook with each and every student, allowing them creative reign while assisting them in their execution. In describing this experience, Umesh stated it was “just wonderful to see how proper guidance can really influence affect academic performance”. He was incredibly proud and elated to see just how successful the students were, so much so that they themselves were even taken back by the beauty in their own work. Umesh even had them recreate Chef Chris’s famous Scarboro Lemon Curd recipe! Following his guidance in the kitchen, Umesh and several of his friends in the industry, sat and discussed their individual paths to success, sharing stories and images of their journey. Since his trip, many of these students have connected with Umesh across social media platforms, such as Facebook, with further questions and of course, great thanks. Umesh has taken on a wonderful mentoring roll, having face to face conversations with students through Skype, and he could not be happier to provide help and support.
brothers. This visit, much like all of his time with family in Delhi, was full of love, laughter, and delicious home cooked Indian cuisine. Umesh met with countless friends, many whom have sound great success in the Food Service Industry. He recalled time spent with Ajay Anand, who holds the title of Culinary Director at Pullman and Novotel in Delhi, two adjoined and esteemed hotels in New Delhi. Ajay is a close friend who studied alongside Umesh, the two also worked together in the U.S. on Carnival Cruise Lines. Umesh credits social media for allowing him and his friends to be able to reunite with ease at many locations throughout Delhi. We are incredibly proud of the work Umesh has done in India. The time he kindly offered to assist burgeoning young minds and his continued efforts as a mentor to students of the culinary arts are true reflections of his remarkable character. We share his joy in being able to be reunited with his family in Delhi, but we are elated to have him return to his second family at Scarboro!
Umesh’s trip to India finished just as it began – with time spent amongst loved ones. Following his time at the Institute, Umesh enjoyed a trip to Banglore in the South of India, to visit one of his
