Festival Compère: Alan Barnes

If he hadn’t turned to music we’re pretty sure Alan could have succeeded as a comedian. His spontaneous humour on stage is unrivalled. Add to that the insights he has gained as an award winning international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist and we have just the person to compere the jazz festival. He has received over 25 national awards, most recently for clarinet in the 2017 British Jazz Awards and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.

ANDCHUCK fashion. From straight-ahead swing through rock feel grooves and ballads to reggae, Crosland and the band shine a new light on these classic songs.

The quartet - saxophone, guitar, drums and bass - formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and now perform all over the country. Andchuck aim to bring a new sound to jazz by combining intriguing melodies, funky grooves, colourful harmonies and the occasional earth shattering riff. This performance is sponsored by Jazz North 56

2.15pm BEN CROSLAND PLAYS THE RAY DAVIES SONGBOOK

Strong grooves, a natural swing and strong, evocative melodies characterise Ray Davies’ songs which allows them to be beautifully reinterpreted in a more contemporary

Presented by Just East (a highlight at our 2012 festival) the Toots Project is music from a quintet featuring virtuoso harmonica player Phil Hopkins. It is a homage to the unique Belgian jazz musician Toots Thielemans, whose career over 50 years saw him working alongside the leading names in jazz, pop and media, gracing their recordings with the highly personal and stirring sound of chromatic harmonica. tootsproject.com

Duke Ellington called sultry songstress Peggy Lee ‘The Queen’. One of the great figures of jazz, her career spanned six decades. This is a narrated show created by pianist Alex Webb. ‘Bebop Spoken Here’ describes Jo Harrop as: ‘A singing sensation.... Her voice is amazing – think Islay whisky, dark porter or tannin-rich red wine – the lissome lady is a class act’.

Terry Seabrook’s new Quintet explores the music of one of the greatest contemporary jazz composers, Wayne Shorter, and features some of the UK’s most outstanding musicians: Andy Panayi, sax, Graeme Flowers, trumpet, Simon Thorpe, bass, Peter Hill, drums and Terry on piano. Shorter was one of Miles’s most important sidemen and was a prolific composer for all of the bands in which he played, including Art Blakey’s Messengers and of course Weather Report.

Special guest with Jo’s band is the superb alto sax player Tony Kofi, a great hit at previous festivals.

10.30pm HENRY LOWTHER’S ‘STILL WATERS’

8.45pm ‘FEVER: JO HARROP SINGS PEGGY LEE’ WITH SPECIAL GUEST TONI KOFI

Still Waters is one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. Henry has played with the bands of John Dankworth, Gil Evans and George Russell, and with classical ensembles including the London Philharmonic. The sound of his warm-toned trumpet and flugelhorn, and the smooth perfection of the ensemble – saxophonist Pete Hurt, pianist Barry Green, legendary bassist Dave Green and drummer Paul Clarvis, produce a subtle interplay of harmonies and rhythm.

ATLANTIC CROSSOVER cover a vast repertoire from Louis Armstrong to Chick Corea and play with an empathy that can only come with long experience. The emphasis, as always, is on swinging, accessibility and interplay. Expect a hugely entertaining programme of straight ahead jazz, flawlessly played and interspersed with lots of anecdotes. Put together by saxophonists Jim Corry and James Russell, the sevenpiece ‘Atlantic Crossover’ has grown from ‘A Tribute to Atlantic Jazz’ and presents appealing, soulful, driving front line power combined with a dynamic and exciting rhythm section.

‘ …. The musicianship was exciting, the delivery perfect and tinged with a sense of showmanship and humour. The boys know their stuff and revel in delivering it’ (2008 Scarborough Jazz Festival Review)

2.15pm DAVE NEWTON & ALAN BARNES

Forty years playing together! That’s what these two fine musicians will be celebrating. Undoubtedly one of the most popular acts at previous festivals, these multi award-winners

4.00pm MATT RIDLEY QUARTET

’One of Britain’s very finest contemporary quartets... the Matt Ridley Quartet is highly creative and exciting, working in a genre somewhere between free form and advanced lyricism and containing four talented musicians who have developed an almost telepathic musical understanding.’ Jazz Views Matt Ridley eschews the traditional head/solos/head approach to composition, preferring instead to create a unique sound-world from each initial glint of inspiration. Matt, on bass, is joined by three outstanding musicians: Jason Yarde (saxophones), John Turville, (piano), and George Hart (drums).

WOODY BLACK 4 the standing ovation. When festival director Mike Gordon suggested this Billie Holliday project, Vimala and John jumped at the idea .

This is an intriguing and talented bass clarinet quartet from Vienna. Own compositions, fresh arrangements, warm sounds, free improvisation and pure tones are some of its characteristics. A quartet driven by experimental curiosity which has taken a somewhat different approach toward jazz and its potential, orbiting around the multifarious spheres of modern jazz.

John is one of a handful of players who can claim to have helped shape the character of modern jazz guitar. Leading bassist Andy Cleyndert joins the duo.

‘….. Rowe is one of the most distinctive singers to come along in some time.’ Clive Davis, The Sunday Times

10.30pm ALAN BARNES OCTET

‘I enjoyed listening to their music.... the sound is refreshing, the music creative, the playing terrific and fun to listen to.’ Eddie Daniels

8.45pm VIMALA ROWE SINGS BILLIE HOLLIDAY, WITH JOHN ETHERIDGE

There was complete silence when Vimala sang Strange Fruit at the 2015 festival - and many a tear! Then

This all star octet has been performing together for over 20 years and has recorded the ‘Sherlock Holmes Suite’, two sets of songs with lyrics by Alan Plater, and ‘A Jazz Christmas Carol’. There will be nothing from the suites at the festival however (nor any strange costumes). This performance will feature expanded versions of other compositions by Alan and a new look at some well-known material, all skilfully arranged to give plenty of space to feature these superb soloists.
