COMMUNITY danau kota community library

In Ray Oldenburg’s The Great Good Place, a “third place” is a space where one relaxes in public, where one encounters familiar faces and makes new acquaintances. Third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Community libraries are therefore vital as they provide community space and community-centric services The community library of approximately 2000m2 is located in Danau Kota. Placemaking was important as the Danau Kota community lacked a gathering space, therefore the design intention was to create an open space that is inclusive to all. Each journey is a different experience for different demographics. It is also a space that is inviting and green, where the library lives with nature

Site Analysis. The site convieniently faces north-south on its long edges, limiting direct sunlight into the site. Wind

comes from the south, giving ventilation to the site. The site is flat with no level differences, giving many potentials for the design. The site has five mature trees with trunk diamters of more than 1m that I wanted to preserved. The trees are close together to the west of the site, with a clear site to the east. In terms of connectivity, the site is strategically located near both residential and commercial areas, allowing access from both users. However there is an army camp to the south with no potentials for access. There is a car workshop at the commercial area that is relatively noisy Demographics in the immediate area is predominantly Chinese, with Malays and Indians interspersed in the greater area. There is also a mix of residents of different age groups, with both primary and secondary schools in the area as well as a prominent univeristy 500m away. The existing infrastructure allows pedestrian access from the residential areas, with good access for automobiles

Site Synthesis. The community in the area lacks a space for gathering, therefore a community library can not only act as a library, but also a place to foster good community relations. The site is strategic as it a flat site, easily accessible by residents in the residential area as well as patrons and workers from the commercial area. The flat site is also a good place for people of all walks of life to access and use. The site also has potential for many green features such as natural daylighting and cross ventilation to be incorporated into the design of the library

Placemaking was important to create a nature-filled space that welcomes all. Starting the design from the section, the

idea of a split level library is conceived from the desire to create journeys and experiences for the users, physically and visually. The split level library allows users to experience different journeys while also allowing visual connectivity across all levels of the library, allowing parents and their children to have their own areas in different parts of the building but still maintaining visual connection

Site Plan. The library sits nestled between the tall mature trees, with one of the trees being incorporated into the library.

As one drives along the main road, they are greated by the green wall and ever-changing bamboo facades. From the outside one sees an imposing green wall, but as one walks under through the green facade from the carpark it opens up to the grand promenade and the split level library. The facade partly encloses the space yet still being open to the sky, bringing a piece of the outdoor into the library. The ground floor is open on all sides for porous pedestrain access. The users are able to choose their own path through the library, with the adult section on the left side and the children and teen areas located on the right. The library is also shifted away from the shops to avoid noise

CONNECTIVITY calisthenics sports centre

Calisthenics is a bodyweight training sport that relies on the users’ bodyweight for training. It differs from other bodyweight trainings such as parkour, freerunning and yoga in that it uses a post and bar or any existing bars such as playground monkey bars in its training. A large portion of exercise movements involve balancing and movement, this is the essence of the sport This essence is carried into the design of the sports center, conveying balance through cantilevring structures, movement through weaving volumes , and bars through the main servant volume and vertical louvers

The Site. A sloped site located in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It is situated next to a park (arrow point) and faces a lake, surrounded by a forest. The site is also flanked by the distinct Seri Gemilang bridge, an important bridge in Putrajaya. There is ventilation coming in from the lake, however the humidity on site is an issue. There are flat areas on the slope with existing drains, giving an opprtunity to create a stepped building

Concept of the Sport. Calisthenics relies on bodyweight to train and tone the muscles. Through a wide range of repetitve exercises such as pull ups and balancing on bars, athletes move seamlessly from one movement to the next, creating a choreography around the bars. Athletes move seamlessly in and out, up and down and through the bars, creating a fluid motion around the stationary bars

Concept Development

The sports centre’s dynamic form is apparent as one drives up to the drop off, with an impressive cantilevered floor shading the drop off. The sloped volume is also visible from the road The sports centre steps down to the flat areas following the natural slope. The surrounding views are also brought into the sports centre with full height glass walls all around the building, Humidity is contolled for the atheletes by enclosing the sports centre, with direct sunlight filtered through

CONTRAST artist house

Where would a modernist who loves nature live in? What would the house look like? How would the house address the need for privacy and connetion to nature? The 100m2 artist house takes inspiration from Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and creates a modernist house for a photographer in the middle of a paddy field. The design explores the relationship between planes and volume, privacy and openess, nature and modernism

The Site. The site is located within a residential neighbourhood, with a school to the northwest and a temple to the southeast. The entrance to the site is lined with fruit trees and through a narrow road, it opens up to a magnificent view of the vast paddy field. The fruit trees provides a natural shade and shields the site away from prying eyes. There is a swallow bird farm near the site that is unsightly and noisy. The wind comes in from the paddy field towards the fruit trees, giving a cool breeze

The artist is Joe Kit, a photographer based in KL. His plans for the house is a retreat for him and his girlfriend. He is a private person, shielding his private life away from public. He is also a writer/ translator, therefore working from home is essential for him. He also likes to entertain guests and host dinner parties for friends and families

Site Plan. The house is conceived based on the artist’s desire of privacy from the public and openness towards friends and family. The house is inspried by the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe, with its flowing spaces and large wall planes that don’t touch. Shielded away from the main residential area by tall fruit trees, accessible only through the narrow road, the visitor comes upon four large white planes, hiding the house. The white walls are a stark contrast against the surrounding nature, reflecting the artist’s modernist personality admist his love for nature. Upon entering, the house opens up to an open plan space, with full glass facade facing the paddy field. The guest room is located in another block, with its own access and views
