GOT A STORY? GET IN TOUCH The stories in this edition of Fresh News are just a few examples of how we’re gradually living the Core Purpose a year after it launched. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s our guiding North Star, providing clear direction as we continue to turn the business around. When we’re doing our jobs and working together to serve customers better, it might not always be obvious that in some ways, we’re already living the Core Purpose. Whether we realise it or not, it’s part of everything we do and guides us as we continue to build a broader, stronger Morrisons. As you know, it’s split into five sections to make it easier to think about and how it involves you personally. Please turn to page 14 where we look at how we’re making our Wonky Fruit and Veg range even bigger than before. This is a great way of helping make sure more

On pages 8-9, we’ll see how we’re working to cut down on the amount of plastics we use. This subject has got many of us talking, especially after seeing the impact plastic is having on the environment in the BBC’s Blue Planet II television series. If you’re inspired by the story and want to do your bit to help reduce the amount of plastic we use, please post your ideas on ways we can cut back over on Colleague Facebook or email yoursay@morrisonsplc.co.uk Supporting small and local businesses is a big part of our work on finding the Nation’s Local Foodmakers. Sharesave is one way we’re making sure everyone’s effort is worthwhile. It helps colleagues put money aside for a rainy day, like Karen Firth, a Price Integrity Cash Manager at our Merrion store. Karen has been working for Morrisons for 23 years and joined the first ever Sharesave programme. “It gives me the chance to save up properly and buy things that I might not have been able to without it,” Karen says. “It’s a great way to save money and since joining it I’ve had two bathrooms done, our kitchen renovated and put some of the money towards buying our cars. “This year we’re hoping to do up our garden and buy a conservatory.” Find out how LIZ FROM SOUTHPORT STORE USED HER SHARESAVE FOR A TRIP TO DISNEYLAND PARIS

CHIPPINDALE

We’re continuing to make and provide more of our own food, thanks to Chippindale Foods, a leading supplier of free-range eggs.

NICK CHIPPINDALE, MANAGING DIRECTOR, OF CHIPPINDALE FOODS

Egg-xactly what we need

We want to make sure we’re delivering good quality, fresh British produce to our customers and to help us do just that, we recently bought Chippindale Foods.

A good egg Dan Shepard from the Quality Team tells us what makes the best quality eggs:

ü

Customers tell us they like to know where their food comes from and we work closely with our farmers to ensure the welfare of our hens so we’re able to provide our customers with fresh British eggs and be fully free-range ahead of the deadline of 2025.

Let’s get cracking Egg is a key ingredient in many of our Morrisons Makes it products, so not only are we able to have the best eggs in stores, the move helps us to make and provide our own-brand products through our Manufacturing sites – like Market Street quiches, which are made at our Greenside site in Bradford. 4

As well as being foodmakers and shopkeepers, we’re also homemakers – making and providing a Home and Leisure range designed to help customers create a home they love. In October, we launched a new Home and Leisure range introducing over 1,480 new products, giving customers good quality products at great value prices. “We’ll be adding new products to the range every week to keep things fresh and we’ll be launching seasonal lines throughout the year, like our changing range of bedding, so there’s always something new for customers to take home. “Our unique layout for the department helps customers picture exactly how our products will look in their own homes too,” says Aaron Sproston, Home and Health Manager, Cheadle Heath. “Every week is different working in Home and Leisure. My favourite thing has to be the Indigo Hues range – especially the wooden clock.” “Our new outdoor living range is very different and more modern than what we've had before. I love the new bedding range in the Spring/Summer collection, as it's really colourful and bright – great for spring,” says Helen Court, a Customer Assistant – Home and Leisure at our Rothwell store.

CAFÉS

FOOD WE’RE ALL PROUD OF

We’re putting our own Market Street products front-and-centre in our new Market Street Cafés in Abergavenny and St Ives, Cambridgeshire. Here’s what our brand-new Cafés are bringing to the table.

We’re proud of the good quality products we sell on Market Street, so we’re bringing that food to our two new Market Street Cafés. These two Cafés have a brand-new menu and feature plenty of the food we’re all proud of – from the bloomer

bread that makes our toast, to using our own steak in the sirloin steak sandwich. With everything from a new barista bar for that daily coffee, to outdoor seating for when the sun is shining – and even a selection of alcoholic drinks – there’s something for everyone.

READ ABOUT HOW WE’RE DELIVERING EVEN MORE OF OUR OWN PRODUCTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ON PAGE 4.

SNOW PROBLEM In the first four days of opening, our Abergavenny Café beat its target, despite the amber weather warnings! They’re already a big hit with both colleagues and customers, but don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what colleagues in the new Cafés had to say about them: 6

We use our own products from all over the store, whether it’s a gammon steak, smoked salmon, freshly-baked baguettes or cream cakes. We’ve also started serving alcohol at the Café, and we’ve had some great customer feedback – more people come to have a meal in the evening now they can have a drink too.” JANE WYATT, CAFÉ MANAGER, ABERGAVENNY

Customers are loving our barista bar. Some used to wait around while their other-half went shopping, but they don’t mind waiting now that they can have a posh coffee! It’s great seeing the new and fresh look of the Café – customers and colleagues both think that the new concept is brilliant, and that it’s helping attract shoppers into store.” SARAH KOCAP, CAFÉ ASSISTANT, ABERGAVENNY

The new seating and lighting in the Café make it feel a lot more comfortable and cosy – customers and colleagues love it, so it’s a win-win. We’re even offering six different kinds of alcohol, from bottled beer, to pale ales and prosecco.” DAN ALLCHIN, CAFÉ MANAGER, ST IVES, CAMBRIDGESHIRE

It’s more like a local, independent café or restaurant – we’ve got a great new menu that changes between lunch and dinner, rather than offering the same meals all day.” JOANNA STILLWELL, CAFÉ ASSISTANT, ST IVES, CAMBRIDGESHIRE

PLASTICS

WHERE EVERYONE’S EFFORT IS WORTHWHILE

We know the environment is important to our colleagues and our customers, so we’re on a mission to cut back on the amount of plastic we’re using in stores, for home deliveries and at our sites.

Mission

possible

Making changes What are we already doing to reduce our plastic impact? “It’s great to know that Morrisons takes issues like the impact of plastic seriously,” says Ahlia Shayler, a Butcher at our Borehamwood store. “I’ve already seen the reduction in plastic packaging when we get meat and fish into the store, less packaging on smaller items and more reusable materials being used when doing my store walks. “I’m quite green-fingered in my spare time, so to know we’re doing our part to help the environment makes me proud to work here.” 8

may/june2018

We’ve signed up to the Plastic PACT – a programme introduced by WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) to bring together organisations across the UK to reduce plastic waste. Steven Butts, Head of Corporate Services, is leading the way

with the fight against plastic: “Our PACT for the UK will be one of a number that will link up globally over time, making it a world movement rather than one just focusing on the UK. That’s critical because plastic pollution is a global problem.”

FREE TAP WATER in all our Cafés so customers can fill their own drinking bottles

We’ve got a

ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL policy for all our stores and sites

“It’s really important we talk to customers about it. With things like removing carrier bags, or selling more loose fruit and vegetables, customers need to know why we’re doing it, we need to share with them that we’re doing it for the environment.”

What’s around the corner? We’re making positive changes, but our fight against plastic doesn’t end here. In June, we’re going to be running trials in store to reduce the packaging on our fresh produce – keep an eye out at your store for these changes as we roll them out. It’s important everyone can contribute to what we’re doing to make a difference in this area. Carrying a reusable cup, using a bag for life and saying no to plastic straws and cutlery are just a few ways you can get involved. Do you have an idea about how we can reduce our plastic impact? OUR DIGITAL JOURNEY

My Pay, Holidays and Rotas One way we’re simplifying and speeding up our business is by introducing the things colleagues need fast in a digital format. Last year we launched online payslips and now we’re looking to roll out online rotas and holiday booking. “Having the ability to check my online rota on my phone is brilliant,” says Andrew Marriot, a Customer Assistant at our Hillsborough store. “Being able to check my shifts at home means I don’t have to call in to find out when I’m working, and I can easily check if anything has changed.”

Being able to book holidays online is easy and efficient and saves so much time. I can check when others in my department are off and request holidays from home, without having to worry about losing pieces of paper.” ANDREW MARRIOT, CUSTOMER ASSISTANT, HILLSBOROUGH

Part of the Community In May, we’re launching Morrisons Communities – a new online space, similar to a social network, for foodmakers and shopkeepers to come together from across the business. Here, colleagues will be able to share ideas, tips, celebrate success, and have the chance to give their feedback on important issues. The new space will help us improve the quality of the products we sell to our customers, solve problems, and listen and respond better together.

We’re always listening and responding to your ideas on how we can make everyone’s efforts worthwhile by simplifying and speeding up the business. You can share your views through Your Say or by emailing yoursay@morrisonsplc.co.uk

NATION’S LOCAL FOODMAKERS

SO MORE AND MORE PEOPLE

Local foodmakers We’re all about supporting local foodmakers. As more and more of our customers look to buy British, local food is helping set us apart. Our nationwide search to find the very best local farmers, growers, bakers and foodmakers has been a success. Unique and handmade local products have a proud place on our shelves, with sales growing more than 50% in the past two years. We trialled Skipton as a flagship local store as part of its Fresh Look changes in 2017, and since the investment, sales of local products have lifted 23%. John Reid, our Customer Services Manager in Skipton, says: “It’s making a brilliant difference to our community and sales are going really well – we do everything from crisps to beer and fresh produce to cakes. Customers love it!” Two new stores with a local focus are St Ives, Cambridgeshire and Abergavenny – these stores have seen more and more customers buy local products compared to other stores in the region. So much so, that three more stores will become local flagships – Peterhead, Scotland, Plymstock, South West and Chester in the North West. Craft ale goes wild One brand that’s grown since it was spotted at our North East Foodmakers event is Allendale Brewery. Based in Northumberland, this independent brewery had only ever produced bottled ales, so we worked with the local brewer to support them in launching a canned craft ale range. Neil Thomas, Brewery Manager at Allendale, says: “We’re really passionate about what we do. We’re based in the middle of nowhere and have tried to reflect some of that wilderness in our beer. “The people at Morrisons are genuinely easy to work with and the exposure they’ve given us has been fantastic. We’d have never been able to access a huge customer base before. It has been great to see our beers popping up all over the country – we’ve seen more people across the nation reaching out on social media because they now know who we are.” There’s been a real customer demand for local ale and Allendale has helped us respond to that. We’ve now moved from selling their product in small quantities to stocking them right across the UK.

Introducing our new and improved Wonky and Savers ranges. Customers often tell us family budgets are tight and under pressure, so we’re doing our bit to help them afford to enjoy eating well. We launched major campaigns to support our Wonky and Savers ranges last month as we help tackle food waste and save our customers money. We work closely with our growers to reduce food waste by buying the whole crop. So, sometimes, our fruit and vegetables can come in different shapes and sizes but they’re still just as good.

Of course everything in the range is naturally wonky or misshapen, so whatever we sell is whatever nature gives us.”

MORRISONS FOUNDATION

Here’s what we’ve been up to over the past few months in the Morrisons Foundation, and what you can expect in the future. GOING DIGITAL Our new website is a great place to learn all about the Foundation and some of the causes we’re supporting through match funding and grant awards. We're also simplifying and speeding up the way that match funding applications are processed, so money can get to our chosen charities quicker.

IN THE FAMILY At the moment, we're also making match funding available for our colleagues' immediate family members and partners too. This means you can apply on their behalf so more and more charities benefit.

MILLIONS HELPING MILLIONS Since launching in 2015, the Foundation has donated over £20 million to more than 1,200 charities across England, Scotland and Wales. Grants have supported a variety of projects, helping to improve lives and local communities. Hundreds of our colleagues have received match funding making their fundraising go further. We couldn’t have done this without our amazing Community Champions. We asked Sarah Marston, Community Champion from Horsforth, about her thoughts on the Foundation. Here’s what she had to say:

How has the Foundation supported your local community? The Foundation has made huge differences to local charities and the people they support. Locally, I have a memory group that now have extra sessions to help them with day-to-day living and remembering good times through music, pictures and discussions. When I found out what the Foundation did I couldn't wait to spread the word. I told colleagues and friends, local organisations and charities. Last week, our local primary school's PTA gained charitable status, so I was able to tell them all about the Foundation and the sort of projects that they could apply for.

Have you ever used match funding? The Foundation has match funded money for my Brownie pack and for colleagues who have raised funds by having their hair cut, running marathons and doing the Three Peaks challenge. What’s your favourite thing about the Foundation? There’s no limit, and it can change lives – it can give between £100 – £100,000, but to the charity, that amount is life-changing. The Foundation shows how much Morrisons cares about its communities. We’re a family-based business, and the Foundation can bring communities together with our stores.

If you’re raising money for charity, make sure you head to morrisonsfoundation.com to find out how to apply for match or grant funding. may/june2018 19
