Summer

This issue we’re feeling the love… the Love Index that is… which captures what our customers love about Morrisons. These days, customers sharing opinions on social media has become as natural as popping to Morrisons for a pint of milk or a punnet of British strawberries. Comments on Twitter or Facebook tell us why our customers love us – ranging from posts praising our great colleagues, to compliments about our food. Whatever the message, it’s always great to hear what we’re doing right and share what’s being said across the business. That’s why we’re focusing on all the ways our colleagues and customers love us in this issue. On pages 4-5, we take a look at a few of these comments and say a huge well done to the colleagues involved. This is something Andy, our Group Customer and Marketing Director, has also been doing in stores.

of love

MADE WITH LOVE There’s no doubt our customers love to know where their produce comes from, like our British strawberries – we sell roughly 15 million punnets of them throughout the year. This is thanks to our close links with growers and suppliers, some of whom we’ve been working with for over 25 years. On pages 12-13, we learn more about our close relationships with growers and speak to Ben Drummond, a strawberry farmer who produces some of the fruit our customers love,

Being admired is easy, but being loved by the public is hard for any business to achieve.” DAVID

ENDLESS LOVE

18 age CLIC S ARGENT, p

about how he picks the perfect strawberry and how we make sure they stay in that condition when they reach our stores and homes. Then on page 14, we’ve got an Eton mess parfait with strawberry sauce recipe to try. A twist on a British classic, it’s best enjoyed while watching the action on court at Wimbledon, which runs until 15th July. We’re also listening and responding to include a Fresh News first – after feedback from the Your Say forum, we’ve included a puzzle. See if you can find all the words in our World Cup-themed conundrum on page 15.

There’s no doubt colleagues love raising money for our charity partner, CLIC Sargent – so far, we’ve raised £5 million for the charity that helps children, young people and their families affected by cancer. We take a look at one such story on page 18, which shows how the money we raise really makes a difference to people’s lives.

LOVE

Every month we gather thousands of our customers’ comments online to find out what they’re loving about Morrisons. Sometimes, the smallest thing can make a customer’s day. It could be a product that takes them down memory lane, a store that stocks their favourite loaf, or a colleague who asked them how their day was. Every month, thousands of our customers send us messages about great customer service they’ve received and products they can’t get enough of – the reasons they love Morrisons. The Love Index is all about sharing these moments across the business. Here are some of our favourite picks – real stories our customers have taken the time to share. We caught up with the colleagues who made these moments happen.

Look out for our Love Index on MorriNews every month and share your best customer stories on Colleague Facebook.

Stephen Piper from our Whitley Bay store received this compliment:

“I visited your store on Hillheads Road in Whitley Bay on Friday 4th May at around 1pm. I was served at the till by a lovely member of staff named Stephen. I just wanted to make you aware that he is an asset to your business. He was really friendly, polite and funny. He’s really put a smile on my face.” Michael Ockerby, Customer Service Manager said: “It’s one of the many compliments we’ve had about Stephen – customers often queue to go through his checkout as he’s just so friendly and builds a great rapport with them. He can read people well – from elderly customers to mums with families. He’s an asset to the company.”

I am from Victoria in Australia, visiting relatives in the UK. We bought your Tiramisu and Crème Caramel in the supermarket and just loved it. We wish your products were sold in Australia!”

THE LOVE INDEX

Sarah Lloyd from our Bedford store received this compliment:

“I shopped yesterday in your Bedford store and needed to ask a question of the butcher about types of roasting joints. I spoke to Sarah who was helpful and, more importantly, knowledgeable about the cuts of beef I required. She went out of her way to explain different options to me and was friendly and constructive in her help. The result was that I bought the joints I needed with confidence. It makes such a difference to speak to somebody so helpful and knowledgeable. Thank you!” Sarah said: “My customers are always lovely to serve, but this lady came into store late in the day and was quite flustered. I thought I’d calm her down with a good little chinwag to take her through our options. She worked for an elderly care home and wanted to find the best beef she could, that wasn’t too difficult to chew, at the right price. We had a good chat and I’m pleased she felt happy enough to write in afterwards!”

Robert McIndewar from our Dumbarton store received this compliment:

“I would like to give my appreciation for the service received today from staff member Robert who had closed the garden shop just before I arrived, but was happy to re-open it to allow me to make my purchase and to load it into my car for me. Robert didn’t have to do this, but I appreciate that he did.”

Robert said: “Some customers show up because the garden centre closes slightly earlier than the store. I’m always happy to grab the keys and open it up for them. I try to be as friendly as possible – especially when they’re tired, you can tell when customers have had a hard day – and start up a conversation. I like to give some energy in every interaction I have.”

WE LOVE IT Rachael Pearson This month, we surprised a very special colleague in Keighley (and one who looked after me when I was on the tills over Easter) after receiving some great feedback about the service she provides for our customers. Watch Andy surprise her in the video below! For this period, we received 605 ‘love’ mentions and 4,649 loves on social media. To read more about why customers love us, head to MorriNews. 204 Like

MASTERCRAFT

Last year, foodmaker Lisa Wileman from our Swadlincote store took home our very first Innovation award at Mastercraft – now her creations are on our shelves.

A HEARTY BRE From mid-June, Lisa’s winning creations – an All Day Breakfast baguette and pizza – hit the shelves in over half of our stores across the country. Lisa took time out from creating tasty new treats to tell us about her road to success. “I’ve been with Morrisons for 16 years, working my way up from a part-time position to Market Street Manager. 2017 was the first Mastercraft I’ve put myself forward for, but I’ve always encouraged my fellow team members to go for it. When I heard about the new Innovation category, I knew I could give it my best shot. “In my store, our Café is really popular. Our customers love the big breakfast, so I wanted 6

to bring its success onto our shelves as well as on our plates. I had the idea of a breakfast sandwich and a breakfast pizza, so I got to work and submitted my application. I even came in on my days off to make the products again and again, and asked all of my store colleagues to taste-test them. By the end of my application, I think they’d had just about enough of breakfasts!”

Lisa continues, “It wasn’t just about getting the product tasting great, I asked for the help of the marketing team and the allergen team, made sure we wasted as few ingredients as possible and that we could make it great value. It’s the whole package that counts. “I competed in the store heats and made it to the final with the help of so many people in the business – my store manager, regional manager, people manager, fellow colleagues and the support team at Hilmore.”

Winning at Mastercraft wasn’t just about me and what I created – my store and my region are just as excited as I am about the products landing in store, so this prize is for them.” LISA WILEMAN, MARKET STREET MANAGER, SWADLINCOTE

QUIETER HOUR IN STORE

WE LOVE IT Lisa Wileman Yesterday I had an amazing day at Greencore, the suppliers of our Food to Go range as part of my Mastercraft Innovation Award. I only got a tiny insight into the amount of work that specialists and buyers have to do to get our products on shelves, but it was fascinating! Myself and the innovation chefs made fresh focaccia and rolled sushi. It was really informative and I feel enriched by it. I’d encourage every colleague to enter Mastercraft this year – showcase your amazing skills! Thanks to Mick Thomas for organising – it was great! 22 Like

foodmakers and We are

shopkeepers...

What we make, makes us who we are – our new campaign celebrates how we all contribute to being foodmakers and shopkeepers, from suppliers, to manufacturing and stores.

GUY WATTS FROM LOWESTOFT STORE

Customers tell us they love buying fresh British produce, so it’s really important we know as much as possible about where our food comes from. We do this by working directly with suppliers, growers, and farmers we know and trust. We select our own fresh British meat, source free-range eggs direct from farms, buy fresh seafood from fishermen, and even the apples that go into some of our bakery products are picked by hand. It’s what makes us different. 12

july/august2018

You tell us how proud you are that we make our own products in our manufacturing sites and on Market Street. And to celebrate this we’re creating even more Morrisons Makes it products, which we’ll be showcasing on Market

Street through counter top tastings, showing off colleagues’ skills and offering friendly advice and top tips to customers. You’ll also see a new advert on TV featuring some of our colleagues, farmers, and suppliers showing how everyone’s effort is worthwhile in making the food we’re all proud of. It makes sure we’re able to deliver good quality, great value, fresh British produce to our customers every day.

Did you know? Customers can now use their own reusable containers on meat and fish counters to reduce plastic waste from disposable packaging. #plasticwaste

MORRISONS MAKES IT

Strawberry fields

forever

TYRONE DOUGLAS AND MARIUS OZUMA FROM FLOWERWORLD

One of our growers is Ben Drummond, whose family have been farming in Ross-on-Wye since 1956, and have been selling strawberries directly to Morrisons since 2008. Few things capture the taste of summertime like British strawberries. They can be enjoyed in lots of different ways: with cream during Wimbledon, popped in an Eton mess, blended for cocktails like strawberry daiquiris, or simply enjoyed as they are. We’re proud that we buy over 50 per cent of our British strawberries directly from growers. “In my opinion, British strawberries are the taste of summer,” says Ben. “They smell and taste completely different to imported strawberries. They can be picked one day and in Morrisons stores the next day, which means they’re as fresh as possible. “It’s great to have a close relationship with Morrisons.

“In the past, we used to deal with agencies and you don’t get the same sense of what’s going on with customers, but working with Morrisons is much better for that.” Ben and his team of up to 250 seasonal colleagues harvest fruit throughout most of the year and know exactly what they’re looking for in a good strawberry. “We’re looking for a consistent shape, flavour, and colour,” adds Ben. “We also pick with shelf life in mind – the strawberries need to be firm, but not crunchy, and a nice red without being too dark. “The strawberries are then placed in a punnet so that the fruit is only being touched once, which keeps them at their best. We then apply a heat seal and deliver to up to seven produce depots for onward distribution to stores.”

Makins, one of our strawberry suppliers, will be providing strawberries picked straight from the field to our stand at the Great Yorkshire Show on 10th – 12th July. To buy your discounted tickets for the show, call 01423 541222 and use the code GYS18WMST4. july/august2018 13

SUMMER EVENTS

Game,

set,

match

With a huge summer of sport ahead of us, what better way to enjoy the action than with some of our tasty strawberries… This year’s Wimbledon Championship runs until 15th July and it’s sure to be a huge part of the British summer yet again. Nothing beats watching the action from SW1 with some fresh strawberries and a glass of Pimms, and to get into the spirit, we’ve got a twist on a British classic for you to try at home.

Eton mess parfait with strawberry sauce

Things you need: ramekins, knife, chopping board, sieve, mixing bowl INGREDIENTS Eton mess • 284ml pot double cream • 200ml Greek yogurt • 4 small meringues crumbled • 200g fresh British strawberries hulled and chopped • 2 tablespoons lemon curd • 200g fresh British strawberries, halved for decoration

Strawberry sauce • 200g fresh British strawberries • 2 tablespoons icing sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

14

july/august2018

METHOD 1. Line 6 x 150ml ramekin dishes with cling film. 2. In a mixing bowl, lightly whip the cream, then fold in the yogurt, crumbled meringues and chopped strawberries until combined. 3. Mix in the lemon curd – try to fold this through the cream and yogurt mix to get a soft marbled effect. 4. Spoon into the prepared ramekins and freeze for 2-2½ hrs or until semi-frozen. 5. While you wait for the ramekins to freeze, make the sauce. Tip the strawberries, icing sugar and lemon juice into a food processor and blend to a smooth purée, pass through a sieve to remove pips and to get a smooth and glossy sauce, and chill until needed. 6. To serve, turn the semi-frozen parfaits out onto serving plates and remove the cling film. Generously arrange the halved strawberries on top of the parfaits. Serve with a good glug of the strawberry sauce.

“MORRISONS HELPED ME GET BY WHEN MY DAUGHTER GOT CANCER”

When Sophie was diagnosed with cancer just weeks after undergoing a gruelling liver transplant, her devastated mother dropped everything to help her recover. What mum Julie didn’t expect were the hidden costs of a cancer diagnosis. But thanks to Morrisons, CLIC Sargent were able to help. Julie said, “I was in complete shock. I just thought ‘Why her? Why Sophie? How can all of this happen to an 18-year-old?’ It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.” Sophie was moved from the family home in Dorset, to University College Hospital in London, where she faced six months of chemotherapy. Julie had to quit her job to be with Sophie.

1 “The costs started racking up immediately,” added Julie. “I had no income, and I’d already got into financial difficulty taking three unpaid weeks off during her transplant. I was staying in

MORRISONS FOUNDATION

“WE ARE SO APPRECIATIVE FOR MORRISONS SUPPORT FOR CLIC SARGENT” This is part of a letter sent to the Community Champion at Morrisons in Bromsgrove. To read the full letter, please visit MorriNews. Dear Sir/Madam, I want to let you know how appreciative my family are for your support with CLIC Sargent. My son was diagnosed with severe aplastic anaemia in 2014 when he was 14 years old. He had numerous blood and platelet transfusions and other treatments. My son had a bone marrow transplant in 2017 which failed and he had a subsequent one which so far is successful. Without the support of CLIC Sargent, the whole experience would have been so much more horrendous.

They visited my son all the time whilst he was an inpatient, they provided so much support and advice. They liaised between doctors, consultants and my son when it became too overwhelming for him to cope. They chatted with him when he was very low and continue to this day to support him in so many ways. I cannot thank them enough for their advice and kindness. Not only did they support my son, they also supported our whole family. Without your support this would not be possible and I want you to understand how grateful we are to your company. The whole situation has been so devastating for us, but CLIC Sargent made the worst days bearable.

Since launching, the Morrisons Foundation has donated more than £1 million in match funding to the charities our colleagues fundraise for. From hospices to homeless shelters, over 350 charities have received match funding thanks to our colleagues’ hard work. Whether it’s pounding the pavements for a gruelling marathon, or organising a bake sale for your chosen charity, the Foundation can match what you raise up to £1,000. They can also match what your immediate family and partners raise too so you can apply on their behalf, meaning more and more charities can benefit. We love to hear about all the great work you’ve been doing for charity, so be sure to share your fundraising stories on colleague Facebook with #matchfundingmondays.

My sincere thanks and kindest regards,

M. Griffith
