WE ARE SCARLETTE THE FASHION MAGAZINE AT OSU Our mission is to showcase campus individuality and beauty, presenting new ideas and exciting photography both to the Ohio State University campus and to the world. Students are responsible for the entire process and execution of the magazine. This makes Scarlette a unique organization where students can take their learning outside of the classroom. Our goal is to create an environment on campus where students feel comfortable expressing their individuality through fashion. With each of our biÂannual issues we aim to inspire our readers and deliver new perspectives on the world of fashion.

As trends push us towards becoming vegan and all organic, at some point you begin to wonder, is your skincare as harmful as social media claims? Famous Youtubers and Instagram models intrigue us with overpriced skincare lines that boasts to make our skin perfect after relying on nature’s resources. I became a victim to this and found myself hunting for my next skincare regime recently. I suffered from some painful acne outbreaks. After starting acne medication, scrubbing my face with benzyl peroxide based facial wash stung my peeling skin. One day in Short North I spotted a mannequin wearing a bright pink maxi skirt in the window of a small boutique nestled on the corner of East 2nd Avenue and High. Enticed, I wandered in. The interior was well decorated with vibrant clothing filling the walls and jewelry adorning the display. I was soon approached by what I later found out to be, the owner of GLAM 356, Laura Wilgling. She is known for her platinum blonde hair and expertly applied makeup. After introductions, Laura revealed me to her range of makeup, Smart Bomb Cosmetics. Not only is she a mother and owner of a clothing store, Laura is also an entrepreneur of her own cosmetic line. Her inspiration? Natural ingredients for those struggling with skin problems. All of her products, ranging from makeup to serums and facial washes, do not contain petro-chemicals, paraben, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances or dyes, and are cruelty free. Those with sensitive, problematic skin, such as myself, would understand how these ingredients can inflame and/or peel the skin. I found this line too good to

be true. Several weeks later, as my skin conditions worsened, I caved in and went back to Glam 356. The girls working in the store were well educated on Smart Bomb cosmetics and one of the workers, Sarah, recommended the AHA Moment Facial Cleanser and Smart Elixir for my combination, acne-prone skin. I was a bit hesitant on paying 60 dollars for both items, but Sarah assured me that the Smart Elixir would last me awhile, up to a year. I ran back home and that night began using the AHA Moment Facial Cleanser. The cleanser is creamy and feels like a moisturizer when I rub it on my face. The facial soap left my face feeling soft and smooth, not red and irritated as most products did. A week of using this facial cleanser with my acne medication prevented my skin from peeling and looking red in the mornings. My favorite item, dare I say Holy Grail, was the Smart Elixir. The Smart Elixir is a priming oil that you apply before makeup application. Your skin becomes a smooth canvas after applying one pump by hand and it dries quickly. Even after almost a year, I have over half a bottle of this elixir left and I rely on it religiously. Now and then I drop by GLAM 356 to replenish my facial cleanser supply and once even received a free 5-minute facial. Their makeup is just as amazing as their skincare line. The Secret Agent Tinted Mineral Moisturizer blends in well with my skin and does not cause any breakout even when I sleep on it after a long night out. GLAM 356 knows how to pamper their customers with champagne on the weekends and relaxing makeup facials of their best products.

“It is not a bad thing to be vain because that shows confidence in oneself.�
The term vanity is most often associated with the word vain, which seems to obtain a negative connotation. Women are discouraged from being vain. However, maybe this is something to be admired. The similarities between vanity and confidence should be recognized because they are actually similar. People are often shamed for being overly confident or proud of themself, but the way one sees themself should trump anyone else’s opinion. It is not a bad thing to be vain because that shows confidence in oneself. One would be happier and live a much fuller life in vain than the opposite. Once you don’t believe you’re good enough, you immediately won’t feel good enough for anyone else. Additionally, having a lot of self-confidence isn’t only beneficial socially but also professionally. Being confident in one’s work and professional status will have significant positive affects on work performance as well. Getting dressed up to go out should make one feel like they are doing it for no one else but their self and they should never be ashamed of feeling good about their appearance. Vanity shouldn’t be viewed as a negative element of our social presence; it should a celebration of our own self-confidence. Jordan Gayle
