The Type Experiments task was to create a book of any subject we desired as long as both copy and imagery were done by us and expressed typographically in a book.
OR IGI N /
This book is a true story about my mother’s fight with breast cancer. It also includes some stories of Americans’ survival. I found out that the mental care of breast cancer patients is very poor, and I hope this project can help address some of the psychological issues facing patients fighting with cancer. It will help them change their minds and help their bodies recover.
PAT H /
From that point of view, I came up with combining different people’s thoughts together. The content is my mother’s story and family members’ feelings throughout the cancer experience. I put a professional psychologist’s thoughts in every chapter opener as the second level voice. Those two voices both encourage patients to face the disease, and change their minds to help their bodies recover. _ DI S C I PL I N E

Hollowness: that I understand. I’m starting to believe that there isn’t anything you can do to fix it. That’s what I’ve taken from the therapy sessions: the holes in your life are permanent. This project leads us through specific steps in the design process to create engaging and relevant solutions. We were asked to propose a topic, identify its relevant audience and stakeholders, then find, create, and implement compelling visual elements in a variety of media that work together as a cohesive system.

We all know the Bay Area has dealt with air pollution for decades. However, air pollution is still a big issue for the environment. A report called People at Risk In 25 U.S. Cities Most Polluted by Year Round Particle Pollution points out San Francisco ranks 6. The brand’s goal is helping individuals make an impact on air pollution by choosing a greener lifestyle. Punctuation was introduced in the main visual system to show the concept of the design process. I chose illustrations, with a simple type and attractive color to represent three keywords. The deliverables of this project are a creative event, a website and a mobile application; they not only work individually to help people make the home healthier for families, and make the home more environmentally friendly, but also form a system that is consistent.

A crust of bread and a corner to sleep in. A minute to smile and an hour to weep in. A pint of joy to a peck of trouble, and never a laugh but the moans come double. And that is life. A crust and a corner that makes love precious, with a smile to warm and tears to refresh us, and joy seems sweeter when cares come after, and a moan is the finest of foils for laughter. _ PA U L L A U R E N C E D U N B A R

Find a dying brand and revive it for a new life. The brand can be repositioned and expanded from where it presently sits, but it has to keep the core meaning.
OR IGI N /
PAT H / I updated the brand to more accurately reflect the values of Borders. Who said a smart brand couldn’t be playful and enjoyable? We will accentuate Borders’ playful and charismatic way of spreading knowledge with the new identity. A common practice at this point in the creative process is to identify concepts related to Borders and its products or services. These concepts are used to inspire visual representations of the company.

Create a campaign for a brand new commercial company. Extract a theme that ties together two different subcultures and create a cohesive visual system through a variety of materials.

PAT H / “Atmosphere” uses Jiangnan (the region of China that is south of the Yangzi River) and Sichuan (a region located in southwest China) cultures to compare the differences between the two areas. Jiangnan and Sichuan share the water of the Yangtze River, yet developed differing cultures and customs. Jiangnan people are gentle and elegant, and Sichuan people are true and passionate. The visual effect created by the contrast in these two cultures embodies the concepts of “wholesome” and “balance” in Chinese culture. _ DI S C I PL I N E

Create a comprehensive book to experiment with designing typography layout with images. Approach the basic principles and explore new innovative ways to communicate with text and image.
OR IGI N /
PAT H / This book is about four different life experiences. There are four acts in the book. The book has an aesthetically pleasing and edgy quality; it mixes modernistic typesetting and graphic elements. I did some unconventional experimental work. I combined some of my hand collage work, and some digital collage work with other artists’ artworks. Some pictures are rough and raw. I include pixels in some images, and others I include even more pixels. I believe these images capture human emotion.
