EXHALE SANCTUARY Multi-faith Space | Approx 500 SF | Cerro Colorado, Tijuana, Mexico Public State View
The Exhale Sanctuary is a prayer space at the US-Mexico border where migrants seeking asylum can go to pray and meditate. The architecture is a calling to provide spiritual and emotional support for people who are in a desperate plight. The majority of the migrants were families or children traveling alone. They are fleeing from threats to their life caused by corruption, gangs, and poverty in their home countries. The overall purpose of encouraging people to interact with space, trying to reduce their mental burden and bringing them together facilitates my design for the interior that changes from light to dark, active to quiet and spacious to packed, according to the number of people using the prayer seating. Ultimately, it creates a gathering space to bring migrants together, which will allow them to meet people with similar stories and gently keep each other company. The Exhale Sanctuary is a safe space of refuge. It not only serves as a physical place of shelter but also brings back the vastness of nature or the comfort of home. It can be rooted in memory, the peacefulness of solitude or company, or feelings of nostalgia.

FLEXIBLE YET RIGID: 3D-PRINTED TEXTILES Instead of creating individual objects interlock with each other, the ker fing strategy removes material from a single complete piece. The flexibility comes from the space removed out, which changes the intergral piece into many interconnected rotary patterns.

ARCHITECTURAL MEDIATORS FOR THE DYNAMIC CONTROL OF LIGHT AND SIGHT Team: Scarlett Zhang, Moon Lou, Yuhan Zhao We s e e t h e s h a d i n g s y s t e m s a s t h e architectural skin. To humanize the building, we designed a breathable skin. It produces a dramatic visual effect that adds to the beaut y of the form. By controlling the moving direction and distance, it transforms from 2D to 3D and fully covered to quite exposed.
