\\TIJF Catalogue Foreword It’s the 1st Toronto International Jewellery Festival (TIJF) and there is a buzz in the air. This dazzling celebration of contemporary jewellery and metal arts from around the world takes place at over 30 museums, galleries, shops and studios across our city. Five years ago, George Brown College and Harbourfront Centre were invited by the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) to host their annual conference in Toronto. Meta-Mosaic SNAG 2013 was born and became the catalyst for launching the Toronto International Jewellery Festival. We felt it was a prime opportunity to galvanize the community and present the public with a unique and exciting festival. “Wear it”–the TIJF tagline– says it all. Whether you want to see the latest in jewellery design or you’re looking to shop for a stunning new piece, TIJF is the place to be for art aficionados and fashionistas alike. This festival brings heightened awareness to a community of artists and designers who create adornment. Some provide goldsmith services (designing and making wedding rings and other jewels that mark important occasions); others transform materials in novel ways; and they all enhance our lives by inspiring us to wear jewellery that makes us fashionable, beautiful and special. Jeweller, designer, maker, goldsmith, metalsmith, and artist— these are all words used to describe the diverse array of individuals who produce and promote the jewellery and art in TIJF. This talented group works in the fields of fine jewellery, art, fashion, sculpture and craft. Some use precious

metals and gemstones, while others use a range of alternative materials like ceramics, plastics, paper, textiles, and cutting-edge 3-D printing technologies. It is an exciting time for Canadian jewellery. The industry is burgeoning; producing an optimistic new generation eagerly engaged with design and embracing the handmade. The time has come for a jewellery festival in Canada. We are an industry leader in precious metals mining and now the third largest producer of diamonds. Come see for yourself what makes Toronto the hub of Canada’s diverse jewellery sector – from mining to market. TIJF thanks all of our sponsors for their generosity and vision in supporting this inaugural festival: George Brown College, Harbourfront Centre, Society of North American Goldsmiths, Mindham Fine Jewellery, Jewellery Business Magazine, Maximum Brilliance and Mejuri. We acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. We extend our deepest gratitude to all of the volunteers from the jewellery and arts communities who have provided countless hours to make this festival a reality. Finally, we thank the venues for hosting the many exhibitions and sales of wonderful work that make TIJF an exciting new festival for Toronto. We hope you find time to visit all of them. And remember‌wear it!
