“Humans speak and buildings don’t, buildings last (or some do) but humans don’t. This causes confusion as to their respective significance and it raises doubts about the conventional presumption in favor of buildings, the more so as humans increasingly outlive buildings.” - 6a Architects Never Modern

6

This project seeks to hold up to the light architecture that explicitly references the past, and favors use of durable materials (especially concrete) in a primal and charming way.

Contention

Jessie Brennan - A Fall of Ordinariness and Light - 2014

“ What characterizes the New Brutalism in architecture as in painting is precisely its brutality, its j-m’enfoutisme, its bloody-mindedness.” - Reyner Banham The New Brutalism 1955

8

What incited this trajectory, is my interest in the tenuous situation faced by the architectural style “Brutalism. In recent years, a cult following has grown up valuing its quirky charm, alien nature and solid, durable appearance. Still, many notable structures have been demolished in recent years; unable to be preserved through litigation because they are not old enough, and unable to gain the support of the community as a whole because of their harsh appearance. Brutalist architecture (born in the mid 20th century) explicitly references ancient architecture in its massing and materiality. These buildings were built to be immortal! Yet ironically, Brutalist buildings are being torn down in droves, replaced by monotonous glass boxes that value the ethereal and temporary over the substantial and eternal.

Background: Brutalism, Hated and Loved

“Alison Smithson described Noah’s Ark ‘as a withdrawal to survive, or the idyll in the extreme’ - in this way the Ark can also be seen as a ‘place apart’ where the residents can gather new strength (‘re-energise’) and from which they can once again go forth into the collective.” - Max Risselada From the House of the Future to a House of Today 10

Re·fu·gi·um: an area in which a population of organisms can survive through a period of unfavorable conditions. This project suggests the possibility for architecture to act as a ‘refugium’. The forthcoming examples could all act as such, with their massiveness, durability and sheltering natures. Collages dispersed through this booklet speak to this type of architecture’s potential to adapt to climate change and endure the harsh climates that will result. This project asks ‘how can architecture respond to today’s environmental cues to act as a place of consistency, refuge and shelter in an age of short attention spans and desire for rapid change?

I have collected a series of projects that demonstrate my efforts to understand this mode of architecture with breadth and depth. Desiring a reasonable level of objectivity, this research emphasizes the figure ground plan and the image as primary modes of investigation. What at first may seem like architectural potpourri (with great variation in scale, age, vintage, geographic location and program) is in fact a conscientiously curated collection of projects that share qualities of primal-ness, austere charm, and durability. I present to you four (4) categories: Public - non-domestic large scale structures Apartment - domestic large scale structures House - small scale domestic structures Folly - micro-scaled projects

Michael Hirschbichler - There is no There There - 2013

“What we want to do is to reanimate the old, solid, creative kind of architectural thinking in modern building.... the outside is a precise expression of the purpose of the building and the inner rooms are not created arbitrarily but are determined by the necessities of domestic living. Here material, construction, and way of life become one.” - Werner Blaser The Rock is My Home 134

Building from the mode of architecture presented by the preceding case studies, I will seek to codify a durable architecture that is able to remain relevant over many generations. I am interested in testing this mode of architecture against everyday American domestic architecture, seeking out the best in each model, creating a new ideal hybrid of the two; presenting a model of building tailored to our present and able to stand up to many generations of use, adaptation, and continued relevancy. Continuing my investigation into these examples, immediate testing will use cast model making as a primary method.
