he history of Irmo unfolds like a tale steeped in the essence of a bygone era, tracing its roots back to a humble rural settlement serving as a vital stop along the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroad. Incorporated on Dec. 24, 1890, the town derived its name from two esteemed figures linked to the railroad, honoring Mr. Iredell and Mr. Moseley.

The Prisma Health Amphitheater is part of the Community Park of Irmo.

While Irmo slumbered as a tranquil rural community, the late 1960s and early 1970s witnessed the emergence of various subdivisions, setting the stage for a transformation. As growth surged like a phenomenon akin to wildfire in the late 1970s, Irmo experienced an expansion that reshaped its landscape. Functioning under the Council form of government prescribed by the South Carolina State Code, Irmo’s governance comprises a Mayor and four council members crafting policy and establishing Town Codes. Simultaneously, the Town Administrator shoulders the mantle of day-to-day operations. Council mem-

What makes Irmo special bers serve staggered four-year terms, with elections occurring biennially. In a pivotal moment of history, December 1988 marked the relocation of Irmo’s Town Hall staff to their new abode at 7300 Woodrow Street. This impressive edifice, gifted by the Lown family and transplanted onto town-owned property at the intersection of Woodrow Street and Columbia Avenue, was the Lown House, a Victorian gem crafted at the turn of the century. Standing majestically amid ancient willow oaks, older than the town itself, the meticulously restored Lown House now serves as the proud emblem of Irmo’s Town Hall, facing the railroad whose presence birthed the very essence of Irmo. And that’s just a start. Here are some of our very special events and places: Okra Strut: In the early 1970s, the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club embarked on an ambitious mission: to construct a library for Irmo. Known for their enduring philanthropy, the club faced a daunting challenge in amassing the necessary funds. A serendipitous moment arrived when members caught wind of local commentator and WIS radio personality Gene McKay’s musings about the ‘Ancient Irmese General Store,’ an establishment nestled at the corner of Fork Avenue and Woodrow Street, where today’s Little Caesars Pizza on St. Andrews Road now stands. McKay whimsically pondered on the existence of these ancient people, envisioning them as possibly short, agrarian folks sustained by okra. McKay’s playful pondering inspired a solution for the Woman’s Club’s fundraising dilemma. In October of that same year, they orchestrated a modest arts and crafts fair at Seven Oaks Park, christened “The Okra Strut.” The club inaugurated the tradition of frying okra to fuel their library fund. Seven years of dedication and countless servings of fried okra later, the Woman’s Club triumphantly secured enough funds to establish Irmo’s inaugural library, situated on St. Andrews Road. Fast-forward to the present, and the Okra Strut Festival has evolved under the stewardship of the Town of Irmo, SC, overseen by the

Town Council and the Okra Strut Commission. This two-day extravaganza boasts live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, a monumental Saturday morning parade (the state’s largest!), an array of arts and crafts, thrilling rides, and an abundance of delectable festival fare. Drawing an average of 25,000 attendees yearly, with past festivals witnessing a staggering 60,000 visitors, this celebration has become a cornerstone of Irmo’s cultural calendar. Beyond the revelry, the festival serves a noble cause. Funds raised flow back into the community, benefiting local civic and school organizations through charitable donations, funding scholarships and enhancing public spaces. As 2024 marks the Okra Strut Festival’s 50th year, it stands as a testament to a half-century of uniting families nationwide in an unforgettable end-of-summer celebration. Nestled near the captivating Lake Murray, Irmo beckons with its enchanting campgrounds, inviting visitors to extend their stay, revel in the surroundings, and bid farewell to summer in the most splendid fashion. Harbison Theatre at Midlands Tech: Harbison Theatre is celebrating its 11th season with a diverse list of acts from national and local musicians, dancers, comedians and theswww.GreaterIrmoChamber.com 11

An intimate 400-seat venue with ample up-close parking, HT@MTC is located in Irmo between Harbison and Lake Murray boulevards and easily accessible from around the Midlands. Saluda Shoals Park: Saluda Shoals Park is a premier, natural, environmentally sensitive riverfront park that invites visitors to experience the treasures of the Lower Saluda River through exceptional educational, recreational and cultural opportunities. This 480-acre regional park offers an Environmental Education Center and Exhibit Hall and a conference facility, The River Center. For more casual recreation, the park has 10 miles of paved and unpaved trails, a river observation deck, nine picnic shelters, two boat ramps, a canoe/kayak launch, a playground and Saluda Splash (open during warmer months). It also has tennis courts, a soccer complex and the newly opened Leo’s Landing Inclusive Playground. The Park also houses

the administrative offices of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. More information on the park, including the new Leo’s Landing Inclusive Playground, can be found on pages 24 and 25. Irmo Parks: Irmo is home to three beautiful parks. Community Park of Irmo, located at 7507 Eastview Drive, hosts the famous Okra Strut Festival. It also includes the Prisma Health Amphitheater, two picnic shelters with barbecue grills, walking trails, playgrounds and restrooms. It is a great location for parties, family reunions or any special event. Irmo Town Park is a quaint park located at 7330 Carlisle St. The Gazebo is nestled among lush gardens and is home to our annual Christmas Tree Lighting. It is a perfect location for weddings and is available for reservations. Irmo Veterans Park is dedicated to our veterans and is located on Palmetto Wood Parkway. It includes a walking trail with gym equipment along the path so you can enjoy the outdoors and get in a workout or simply read a good book.

School District Five continues to Love and Grow Our Students under the leadership of superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross Sr. The district also welcomed new principals to the Irmo cluster including Karey Fisher (Nursery Road Elementary) and Dr. Thomas Turner (Harbison West Elementary). Both leaders are veteran educators who have been in the profession for many years. School District Five was ranked as the number two school district in South Carolina by Niche. com and was named the number one Best Places to Teach in South Carolina. It was ranked third in the state for District with the Best Teachers. Our elementary and middle schools are ranked among the top in the state for academics by Niche.com, and in 2023, 93 School District Five middle school students were named South Carolina Junior Scholars for PSAT scores and other measures.

School District Five also is a leader in career development opportunities for students with special needs, winning numerous awards for its BOOM (Building Occupational Opportunities in the Midlands) initiative with Midlands Technical College and Project SEARCH program with Prisma Health. We know that characteristics taught in school will carry over to college and career successes. School District Five students and staff annually participate in community service events and contribute to March of Dimes, United Way and other charitable organizations. Our schools provide a wide array of enrichment opportunities, from top athletic teams and activities to award-winning arts and music programs. Harbison West Elementary School Social Worker Elizabeth Balog was named the District Support Employee of the year. Leaphart Elementary School STEAM Magnet was named a Green Step School through the Green Steps Program, capping a year of numerous honors for educators in our district. Irmo Police Department

Irmo Police Department offers helpful programs for residents

rmo Police Department is an agency of 29 officers and four civilian administrative staff, serving a community of about 13,000 people. By South Carolina standards, the Irmo Police Department is a medium to large agency. The department offers several different programs to keep the lines of communication open between the department and the community. The Irmo Police Department participates in the nationwide E911 program and emergency services are available by dialing 911. The Irmo Police Department has two Divisions: Patrol and Special Operations. Both divisions are under the leadership of Chief Robert “Bobby” Dale. As a fifth-generation law enforcement officer, he began his career in 2001 and joined the Irmo Police Department in November 2003. Chief Dale has an open-door policy and welcomes the residents of Irmo to visit and meet the IPD officers and staff. The Patrol Division is made up of four shifts that provide continuous 24-hour preventative patrol coverage and respond to calls for service within the Town of Irmo. Their roles vary to include detecting and deterring crime; traffic enforcement; direction and control; suppressing disturbances; apprehension of offenders; responding to calls for service; rendering aid; preliminary investigations; and interacting with the community in a manner consistent with our policies. The Special Operations Division consists of the Criminal Investigations Division and the Community Services Division. The Criminal Investigations Division is tasked with following up on leads in criminal cases. The Investigators are available to respond at any time day or night, to scenes of any incident. They are also responsible for processing all major crime scenes as well as the collection, packaging, and preservation of evidence. Within the Criminal Investigations Division is our Drone and

Drone Pilot. The Irmo Police Department Drone, or “Okra 1,” as it’s been affectionately named, has been instrumental in missing persons investigations and a fan favorite at community functions such as National Night Out. The Community Services Division focuses on improving the quality of life for residents within the Town of Irmo. Their officers conduct child safety seat inspections and handle Code Enforcement complaints in addition to attending community functions around the Irmo Area. Through a grant, IPD now staffs an SRO at Irmo Elementary, which has been a big hit for the school and the community. Among the responsibilities of this division are the Irmo Police Department Explorer Post 800 and Serving Our Seniors. The Irmo Police Department Law Enforcement Explorer post is through the Boy Scouts of America. This program allows young people ages 14 to 20 with

Irmo Police Department an interest in being a police officer to learn about law enforcement from officers within the department. Members of the post receive instruction in different areas of police work and then compete against other posts in South Carolina. Several employees of the Irmo Police Department, including Chief Dale, Lieutenant Andrea Grinstead and Corporal Chris Kaderly are former Law Enforcement Explorers. Also offered by the Irmo Police Department is

a program for our senior citizens called Serving Our Seniors (SOS). We offer educational programs throughout the year about avoiding scams, crime prevention and weather preparedness. We also contact program participants if we have advance notice of inclement weather. Fire District rict always ready to serve

he Irmo Fire District was established in 1963 as a special purpose district enacted by the South Carolina Legislature. We have a long and outstanding history of pride and tradition that allows us to work together as a family and serve our community in a most efficient manner. The IFD serves between 45,000 and 50,000 citizens spread across an area of approximately 28 square miles. This includes the Irmo Fire District, the Town of Irmo, Lexington County, Richland County and areas of Ballentine and St. Andrews. We also have automatic aid agreements with the City of Columbia and Lexington County Fire Service.

Irmo Fire District provides the daily emergency and non-emergent services to our citizens, businesses, and visitors by responding to all types of fires, emergency medical incidents, motor vehicle crashes, swift water rescue, hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, citizen assists and technical rescues. Our services also include community risk reduction efforts, such as fire prevention, code enforcement, public services, public education and community outreach. IFD is dedicated to providing the highest level of service in each and every one of these categories. Our three fire stations are staffed 24/7 and house two Engines, one Ladder truck, and a rescue boat between them. The newest fire station opened in March 2020 and will improve our ability to provide services to a growing community. This new station is located near the Irmo Police Department at 7422 Childs St. Our 39 suppression personnel are divided into three shifts, and are operational every day of the year.

The Irmo Fire District has been recognized by the State Fire Marshal’s Office as a Fire Safe Community for three consecutive years. Our dedicated Fire Marshal is committed to preserve lives through community safety education, effective fire inspections, detailed fire plan reviews, comprehensive fire investigation and smoke alarms. We install hundreds of smoke alarms and CO2 alarms annually through a grant given to the Irmo Fire Foundation. Being a fire fighter is more than putting out fires. We answer approximately 5,000 calls for service annually, with public service, community care, lifting assistance, wellness checks and other “well-being” activities representing over 35% of all calls, and fire calls representing only 7%. IFD also provides free car seat checks by appointment. We love being a part of the community and getting to know everyone. We are happy to schedule apparatus and safety demos at daycares, schools, church groups, neighborhood homeowners associations and public events. These enable us to teach basic fire safety to our citizens. We enjoy giving tours of the station and encourage future fire fighters that want a closer look at the fire engines to stop by and spend some time with us.
