The formation of the Executive Committee is my top priority after I became the chairman of YBAC. The SCCCI functions effectively by having a diverse and experienced Council at the helm. In March last year, the SCCCI established the YBAC and I feel deeply honoured to be chosen as the inaugural Chairman. I have great admiration towards SCCCI President Roland Ng for his forward-looking vision in wanting to build a strong youth chapter and tackling the sensitive issue of succession planning. I am also deeply appreciative of his support and confidence in me. Aside from nurturing young Chinese business leaders into successors of the Chamber, the YBAC also must ensure the Chinese entrepreneurial spirit and culture are upheld and passed on through the generations. We have four key objectives, namely, motivating young Chinese business leaders to focus on matters relating to the

These initiatives create an eco-system for encouraging innovation, risk-taking, value creation and keenness in enhancing our society. This will inject greater vibrancy into Singapore’s growing position as a hub for start-ups and lead to more collaborations among budding entrepreneurs. Under your leadership, CDL has ventured to China and secured prime sites in cities such as Shanghai, Suzhou and Chongqing. What advice do you have for Singapore companies that wish to enter the Chinese market? Being the world’s second largest economy, China is a highly competitive market and companies there need to move very quickly. As China is a huge country comprising over 600 cities with different cultures, there should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. What works in one city may not work in another.

P a y l a h 、 GrabPay、Fave、Razorpay、CarouPay、Dash、 Samsung Pay

Centre@
(Group-Based
Upgrading

established in 1906, which makes it 112 years old. In that past one century, SCCCI witnessed the unfolding of Singapore’s history, from the British colonial period, the Pacific War, Singapore’s self-governance, its merger with Malaysia to its independence and nation building. The Chamber was an influential player at every stage. That was why Singapore’s Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew highly affirmed the value of SCCCI’s history, saying: “The history of the Singapore

Chinese Chamber of Commerce is a reflection of the history of Singapore.” As a business group with a century-old past, SCCCI puts much emphasis and attention on the dynamics in the telling of Singapore’s history. In conjunction with the re-launch of the “Chinese Entrepreneur”, we explore in this edition the historical significance of the SCCCI’s birth from the perspective of innovation, bringing out the subtle relationships between the Qing dynasty, the Chinese community of Singapore, and Britain. In future editions, we will regularly share with readers a series of historical stories of the SCCCI, so that everyone would be intrigued to follow closely again the functions and roles it plays in Singapore’s political, economic and social developments.
