FROM THE PRODUCERS “Applause begets applause in the theatre, as laughter begets laughter and tears beget tears.” —Clayton Hamilton, Theory of the Theatre

What does it mean to be community theatre? It means you. Each role supports another—and your role as audience is no different! Our production staff, actors, and volunteers have had a great time working hard to take these shows from page to stage. The final step is inviting you, our audience, into the world we’ve created just for you. This season, we present you with a slate of performances that bring laughter and tears, joy and sadness—and all things in between. We take you from the set of a biblical epic to an English flat to a spelling competition to the Warsaw ghetto to magical woods and, finally, to a Pennsylvanian estate where nothing short of hilarity can ensue. Thank you for joining us on this adventure—sit back, relax, and enjoy the world we’ve created for you.

ABOUT THE PLAY Seven doors in theatre in the round? Wow, farces love doors! What a romping, slamming, fast-paced British Bedroom farce we have! Farce needs a little madness! The No Sex situation is placed in 1973 “New Elizabethan Era” England, a bit of a dated play, but this is amply compensated for by the audience slipping back into post-war freedom found at the beginning of the sexual revolution. No Sex comes from this British Post-War Era: Glam Rock, the Osmonds and Benny Hill sprang into the English populace. We have plenty of swift action, particularly in the second act, where the various characters move in and out of numerous doors with bewildering rapidity each in “near miss” situations. These characters are prudish English peoples who are strong willed, reserved, able to keep their feelings to themselves, stoic, from Victorian heritage of prudery. Sex was a private matter! Yet, No Sex has plenty of sexual double and triple entendres, slamming doors, embarrassing situations and crazy sight gags. It is an energetic (almost) frenetic ribald laughter-fest that fires on all comedic cylinders. We hope you enjoy our interpretation of the Sexual British Culture of 1973!

ON STAGE TONIGHT

LINDSEY ALLISON (BRS Delivery Worker, Other Voices) is thrilled to be back for her fourth season with SCCT. She was the orchestra conductor for Hello, Dolly! in 2010, and played in the orchestras for La Cage Aux Folles and The Full Monty. She was in the casts of Thoroughly Modern Millie and An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein. Lindsey has also performed at the Millbrook Playhouse. She is a music teacher in the Bald Eagle Area School District, and the co-advisor for the B.E.A. Drama Club where she has directed, technical directed, and choreographed.

KATIE CARRIERO (Barbara) is very happy to be playing the role of a hooker this summer as she didn’t have to do a lot of work getting into character (it came naturally). If fact, one of her favorite pastimes includes meandering around in skimpy outfits with Area 51 sex dolls, hitting on everyone she encounters. Needless to say, this role was the ideal fit. Katie has been with the barn for four seasons, but this is her very first time being in a show. She had a great time. WILLIAM DANIEL DAUP (Brian Runnicles) Educator, artist, and master dishwasher, Daup devotes his free time to community theater. A member of the State College Community Theatre for 20 years, he also works with the Stone Arch Players of Lewistown and at the McConnellstown Playhouse near Huntingdon. He most recently appeared here in Hello, Dolly! as Horace Vandergelder. Bill is employed by Bing’s Diner in Burnham.

MERCER BRISTOW (Vernon Paul) is in his eighth year with SCCT. Last year, he appeared in Twelve Angry Men, Wonderful Town, The Curious Savage and Dracula (as Van Helsing). Since 2006 he has had roles in over two dozen Penn State sudent films, three Nittany Valley Symphony musicals concerts, several Red Glass film productions, Class Act stage productions and Singing OnStage. In July he will appear in the Nittany Theater Company production of Love, Sex and the I.R.S. During the day, he is Director of the Authentication Department at the American Philatelic Society headquarters in Bellefonte.

ON STAGE TONIGHT

ROD EGAN (Arnold Needham) This is Rod’s second play with SCCT. Last year he auditioned, thinking that being in a play would be a good way to meet chicks. He got a role in Twelve Angry Men. Bummer. This year, however, more than makes up for that. Rod knows nothing about inspecting banks. By day, he is a software engineer, currently looking for work (blatant solicitation). He and his family live in the suburbs of Boalsburg.

children for letting Mama out to play, and the greatest husband a woman could hope for. TAMR, Joshua! AMY FARKAS (Susan) is delighted to be returning for her second season at the Barn. She was last seen as Ellsworth in Mrs. McThing. She is the Township Manager in Harris Township. Thanks to Bea for this wonderful opportunity and to her fellow castmates for making this such a naughty, naughty production. Many thanks also to her family, friends and her po po for their love and support.

SUNAM ELLIS (Frances Hunter) is thrilled to be returning to the SCCT stage for this hilarious British farce! She was last seen as Stella in SCCT’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire last summer. Other favorite roles include Belinda/Flavia in Noises Off, Viola in Twelfth Night, and Iris in Down the Road. Sunam thanks Audiology her incredible friends for cheering her on, her precious

SHAUN T. MCMURTRIE (Peter Hunter) returns to the SCCT stage tonight after previously appearing as Eddie in Mrs. McThing and Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire during last season. Some of his favorite roles for SCCT include Felix in The Odd Couple, Malcolm in The Full Monty, and Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest. You may also have seen him perform as Adam in The Diaries of Adam and Eve or Gary/Roger in Noises Off for other local theatre groups. He is a National Board Certified mathematics teacher at Bellefonte Area High School, where his students have enjoyed him teaching geometry and calculus with a British accent for the last three weeks.

ON STAGE TONIGHT CHARLIE WILSON (Leslie Bromhead) No Sex is Charlie’s 80th production. His favorite roles include: Juror #4 in Twelve Angry Men for SCCT, Ernie Cusack in Rumors for the Stone Arch Players, Arthur in Something You Did for The Next Stage, and Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for Centre Playhouse. Charlie was a finalist in Toastmasters International’s World Championship of Public Speaking in 2008. He is active in Rotary International’s High School Speech Contests, and is a retired member of the Penn State faculty. He is accompanied in life by his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Dave and Doug; and Garbo, the cat.

BONNIE SPETZER (Eleanor Hunter) has been a member since 1980, serving on the SCCT Board of Directors as well as backstage, front of house and on stage in memorable shows like The Foreigner (Betty Meeks), Lend Me A Tenor, You Can’t Take It With You (Penny), Don’t Drink The Water (Marion) and Fiddler On The Roof for just a few. She also had the privilege of being in and helping with costumes for an operetta called York: The Voice of Freedom developed at Penn State about the slave of Clark during the Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1802–05. Bonnie is excited to be back on stage again after several years hiatus and would like to thank her family and friends for all their love and support.

ARTISTIC STAFF MARY BETH ‘BEA’ GEPPERT (Director) was born American but is British by heart. At Roehampton University in London, Bea taught Shakespeare in Contemporary Performance and History of Theatre. She also taught drama at Stratford-upon-Avon College facilitating courses on Shakespeare and other acting styles. Now she is the proprietor of Bea’s Performing Arts: developing the human potential through performing arts. Bea’s performance history stretches over 30 years: ranging from performing in a blues band to acting. As an active member of Carpe Diem Theatre Company (Resident theatre company of Shakesperience, Stratford-upon-Avon England), Bea designs and facilitates workshops for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Evesham’s Arts Centre and Leeds Grand Opera House. Bea also teaches acting classes, and private piano, guitar and voice lessons.

MEG EGAN (Stage Manager) This is Meg’s third tech show with SCCT, having also been Assistant Stage Manager for Hello, Dolly! and Children of Eden, and was an apprentice in 2009. She has also state managed numerous productions of the State High Thespians. Meg is currently a rising senior and plans on majoring in International Relations or Marine Biology. Thanks to Bea and also to Anne Higgins! JOY ELIZABETH DOWNEY (Costume Designer) received her BA in Theatre Arts from Penn State in 1996. This is her first in-season production with SCCT. She also designed last Halloween’s Dracula. Previous work includes costumes for the 2007 Mad Muse production of The Rocky Horror Show, and assistant stage manager for The Vagina Monologues presented by the Women of State College. Special thanks to Yadin for putting up with her creative messes.

ARTISTIC STAFF EVAN STROCK (Sound Designer) has been immersed in music throughout his life. Piano and guitar lessons led to singing in select high school ensembles and playing in a variety of bands. He studied jazz and classical guitar, music theory, and music production at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. He’s self-taught on the drums, bass guitar, harmonica, and the egg, and also enjoys cycling, soccer, dancing, and producing and recording his own music.

has toured with Children’s Theatre Productions and worked with The State Theatre Summer Drama Academy. This set exhibits a strong visual contrast linking the neo-classical designs of the bank apartment with the Late Modern art movement expressed in the furnishings and decor. It is this juxtaposition that sets the stage for the characters and the action. BRIAN HAND (Set Construction and Director’s Assistant) is new to the theatre world and happy to be assisting Bea for the fourth time. The first show he helped her with was The Vagina Monologues, where he stood in for absent actors and ran lights during the run at The State Theatre. Also at the State Theatre, Brian assisted with set construction during the Summer Drama Academy. Next, he helped create and build the set for Babes in Toyland at the Reitz Theatre. No Sex tempted him to audition for the first time; however, time commitments and living in Clearfield held him back. But, what a fabulously funny show!

GENE DEIBLE (Set Designer) resides in Reynoldsville. He was educated at Edinboro University where he studied Fine Arts and Education. Most recently he has been associated with The Reitz Theatre, in DuBois, designing for both the DuBois Community Theatre and The Reitz Theatre Players. A long time advocate of theatre education, Gene
