Golf gets strong support from Chuck Husson IV
G
STORY AND PHOTOS BY ED TOWNSEND
iving back to the game of golf has the future of the game on solid ground and these are the foundations that Roscoe golfer Chuck Husson IV supports as he not only performs as a championship golfer, but also in the long hours of work that it takes to manage two large Sullivan County summer golf leagues. Forty-two year-old Charles (Chuck) Louis Husson IV is a lifetime resident of the Town of Rockland (Roscoe) and is a 1998 graduate from Roscoe Central School. Following his high school graduation Chuck 8 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2021
served four years 1998-2002 in the United States Air Force and from 2002-2003 was a substitute and teacher’s assistant at Roscoe Central School. In March of 2003 he took the New York State Corrections Officer’s assignment at Woodbourne Correctional, a position he has held for a little over 18 years. His hobbies include anything sports related with golf being his No. 1 choice. At Roscoe Central, basketball and golf were his main sporting activities, and he was part of multiple division and league titles in both.

Family golf for the Roscoe Husson family includes, from the left, Chuck Husson III, Anna May Husson, Terri Ward (Chuck Husson IV’s girlfriend) who is just trying to learn the game of golf, and Chuck Husson IV.
At the early age of eight in the late 1980’s his father, Chuck Husson III, now a retired NYS Correction Officer from Woodbourne Correctional started to get Husson IV interested in the game of golf. That interest in the game was helped by the fact that both his mother, Anna May, and father, Chuck III, were both very active in the game and his father served many years as treasurer on the Twin Village Golf Club board of directors and for a number of years was President of the Monday Night Men’s at the Twin Villlage Golf Course. Chuck has been an active golfer for some 32plus years and now competes in two leagues, the Twin Village Monday Night Men’s League, and the Community Travel League which plays at the Tarry Brae Golf Course, the Lochmor Golf Course, the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club and the Villa Roma Golf Course. Husson’s golf partners in the two leagues he is
active in include his father Chuck Husson III in the Roscoe Twin Village Monday Men’s league and in the Community Travel league his partner is his close friend and excellent golfer Bryan Thomas. Not many golfers have the opportunity to team-up with their father as partners in the twoman team format and Chuck IV noted, “once I started playing in the Monday Night league subbing as a 14-15 year old, it was a personal goal of mine to eventually partner up with my father.” “Because of the long waiting list to get into this league and the fact that even at that age I was planning on going into the Air Force, subbing was my only option then. After getting out of the Air Force in 2002, I was lucky enough to get my foot in the door into the Monday Night league as a full-time player partnering up with Charlie CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

When asked what his dad has taught him about the game of golf, Chuck IV noted, “The main Coyle,” Chuck added. The journey for the two Hussons to unite as golf thing that has helped me the most is patience league partners continued with Chuck IV stating and the ability to reset after a bad shot.” Chuck IV’s mother (Anna May Husson) is also that “my brother (Tom Ackerly) (different fathers) had since partnered up with my father while I an accomplished and active golfer and Chuck III was in the Air Force and unfortunately, Charlie started teaching both of them around the same passed away a year or two later which led me time and Chuck IV stated, “We both caught on searching for a new partner. I believe my dad and quick. “I am pretty sure that I get a large portion of my brother had won the Monday Night league competitive nature from my mother and what championship a few times, and I did not even would look like a nice relaxing round of golf want to ask to switch partners with my brother between father, mother during their hot streak.” and son from watching After golfing with a few different fill-in afar, was usually an intense partners Chuck IV asked his brother if he cut-throat match between would be willing to find a new partner himthe three of us…there were self and this would allow him to play with no gimme’s or mulligans his father. His brother agreed and the two allowed,” Chuck added. Hussons, the III and the IV have been partChuck IV pointed out ners ever since. very strongly, “If I played in Asked what it’s like playing in a league a mixed league I would with your father, Chuck IV said, “Being able choose my mother as a to do something that you love with somepartner as she has become one you love is amazing, and win or lose I Chuck Husson IV an amazing golfer and we have a great time golfing and spending time CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

play good golf together.” “It does not happen as much as it use to when I was younger, but anytime golfing with my parents is time and memories I will always remember, Chuck IV pointed out. Managing two golf leagues is not an easy task and one has to have a great love for the game. “It’s very tough and time consuming,” said Chuck, “scheduling and trying to please everyone in the league is the hardest part.” At Twin Village, Chuck has put in 25 years as a sub and full-time member and took over managing the league from his father about three years ago. He and his father have won the league championship five years since being partners. Bryan Thomas and Chuck have played in the Travel League for seven years and won it three of those seven years. This is the fourth year Chuck is running this league. The challenges in competing in the Travel League, according to Chuck is the randomness of playing a different nine-hole course each week. Most leagues play the same course each week and that Husson maintains, “Makes it easier to learn the ins and outs of it quicker and that is the
major challenge with Travel league which I like most about.” In the Travel League Husson is a four handicap and in the Monday Twin Village league he plays to a two handicap. Husson tries to play in as many Benefit Scrambles around the area as family and work allows. He plays in these tournaments with pretty much the same team each match. Members of the team include nephew Collin Tallman and friends Tom Roseo and Johnny Meyer. He won some and lost some and for the past three years having competed in the Sullivan County Democrat tournament with nephew Collin Tallman. It was a bit of a learning experience the first year but Collin and Husson have won the second flight each of the last two years. “When I play with Collin I have to remember that I am not in my 20’s anymore, and I have no chance of keeping up with his distance,” Husson noted. When asked who has helped him the most with his golf game, Husson said, “There is not one person or thing…where my game is now is because CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

of many different things and people, like the Catskill Junior Tour when I was younger, being on the Roscoe High School golf team, learning from my coach and uncle Jim Bowers, pointers from the late great ‘Coach’ Fred Ahart down at the athletic field, playing in the Monday Night Men’s league as a teenager and getting that experience of playing with adults in a competitive setting. “Also playing with my Travel League partner Bryan Thomas who is super knowledgeable about the game and most importantly my parents for always making the game of golf easily accessible to me,” he added. When asked what he considers the strength of his game Husson said, “I am a scrambler on the golf course, getting creative and being able to see and hit shots that others would not attempt or even see is the strength to my game.” There is also a personal life that everyone tries to enjoy. Chuck noted, “My personal life is in an extremely happy place and mainly because of my amazing and beautiful girlfriend Terri Ward.” “She is supportive in everything that I CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

do....especially golf. Last year at the golf range was Terri’s first experience attempting golf and it did not go well. Her softball swing (she is a member of the championship softball team Charlie’s Angels) was taking over and she could not get the golf swing together, but knowing how competitive she is, Terri has no plans on letting golf win.” Terri is employed as the Business Development Director at the Resnick Group, is a former Sullivan County Legislator and the former CEO of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce. Golf plays an important part in Chuck’s 11year-old son’s (Liam) life, and they are excited to get out and play golf this season as last year Liam only played a few times with Covid going on. “Liam got a new set of Junior King Cobra’s last year and he has grown into them this past year, and I’m excited to get him out there on the golf course,” Chuck said. It takes a well-organized and talented individual to achieve what Chuck Husson IV has done for his personal game of golf and for the overall sport of golf.

Swinging Bridge Marina rents fishing boats and pontoon boats, which can fit up to ten people. It’s the largest power boat lake within an hour and a half drive from anywhere in Sullivan County. The restaurant is open seasonally and offers everything from sandwiches and salads, to homemade comfort food classics like fried chicken and fish and chips. Michael Croissant said due to the pandemic they’ve been busier than ever as people look to escape cities and find country landscapes. In addition to all the newcomers, Croissant says they have customers that come back year after year; many of them have been there for 20 years or more. The summer is the perfect time to gather some friends, rent a boat and head out on the lake to catch some sun and have a good time.
Swinging Bridge Marina worker Victoria Blinston was busy last week “unwrapping” boats and getting them ready for the water. The marina also offers winter storage. • Bryan & Barbara are ready and waiting for you at the front counter and by the phone or computer to take your orders.
We are open for business and helping everyone get back to normal! Of course, we are taking all of the appropriate current safety precautions, and we ask that all customers wear a mask and to stay 6 feet apart. We are ready to supply you with all your office, home office and computer needs.
• Our copy shop is open again and Jessica has all of your art supplies and framing in the Art Shoppe. • If you need a copier or computer or even a commercial vacuum, Gene and Ryan are anxious to speak with you. We service every item that we sell and we never charge for delivery.

Whether you’re a beginner or an avid biker, make the trip to Catskill CycleWorks and they will help you find what you’re looking for.
Jon Thorndike and Kelly Lawler opened Catskill CycleWorks this past December. Jon has a long history with bikes, and Kelly rides casually.

I
n the past year, pandemic restrictions have caused more people to get back in touch with the outdoors. One of the ways people have done so is on their bikes. An article on CNBC.com titled, “Covid has spurred a bike boom, but most U.S. cities aren’t ready for it,” noted that bike sales reached $1 Billion in April 2020 alone, which was a 75 percent increase from the prior year. Discussions with local shop owners last spring and summer was on par with the national data, as bike inventories were suddenly wiped out. That’s not surprising locally because the Catskills offers several great places to go for a bike ride, whether it’s hitting the road or one of the many scenic trails. No matter what you choose, it’s always important to be prepared. Luckily for you, there’s a new bike shop called Catskill CycleWorks on Main Street in Jeffersonville where you can purchase new bicycles, accessories and apparel, as well as have your bike serviced and repaired. Owners Jon Thorndike and Kelly Lawler opened Catskill CycleWorks in December. Jon is originally from Connecticut and Kelly is from Georgia. Their paths collided when they were both living in New York City. In fact, CONTINUED ON PAGE 44

they were neighbors. The couple started coming up to the area in the early 2010s before making the decision to settle in Lake Huntington yearround. Cycling also happened to be a commonality in their lives. Jon has years of riding experience and his love for it is apparent. “I like to be outside and the idea of working towards another fitness goal, [such as] climbing a hill or going faster than you have before,” said
Jon. “I also enjoy the ongoing, infinite challenge of always trying to get better.” Kelly, who works in the advertising technology field, also rides casually and her brother happens to be a retired pro cyclist. For the past decade, Jon had been restoring old motorcycles, which became a catalyst for starting the shop. “That got me into doing my own bicycle work and it sort of snowballed from there,” he explained. Months of research followed, which included

choosing products and bikes they’d feature at the shop. Jon also had a lot of conversations with vendors and distributors. That has only added to his knowledge, and no matter how many times you’ve stepped onto a bike, they can provide you with what you need. “We want to accommodate as many different
experience levels as we can,” explained Kelly. Several people have brought in bikes they haven’t touched in years and Catskill CycleWorks has helped get them back on the road. While nobody knows for sure when the pandemic will be over, there is one thing that’s clear: CONTINUED ON PAGE 48

Jon’s tips for a great ride 1. Make sure your bike is prepared and ready for the ride you’re about to embark on.
MASKS REQUIRED TO ENTER THE STORE
2. Plan ahead! This includes knowing what type of ride you’re taking, the distance, duration, etc. You should also leave a little room for exploration. 3. Pacing is important. Don’t ride too hard in the beginning or you’ll have a tough time at the end.

In a newspaper article, Franklin told readers that the rattlesnake’s eyes, for example, excelled in brightness well beyond those of other animals. “She has no eyelids,” he said. “She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders. She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage... she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.” Franklin succeeded in lifting the rattlesnake’s esteem to the point that the reptile routinely graced colonial flags during the Revolutionary War. Indeed, our local big snake, the three-tofive-foot long timber rattlesnake, should command both respect from a safe distance and gratitude for keeping the rodent population (think Lyme Disease) at bay. “Snakes get a bad rap because of our unnatural fear of them,” said Wes Gillingham of Livingston Manor. He is Catskill Mountainkeeper’s associate director and a former National Park Service park ranger.
“Snakes are part of the ecosystem that keeps things in balance.” RATTLERS’ GOOD SIDE
Due to indiscriminate killing of timber rattlers and loss of their habitat, the snake is on the New York State’s Department of Conservation threatened list, making it unlawful to kill or harm them. It is also illegal to publicly disclose den locations for this protected snake, which in Pennsylvania is now listed as a species of the greatest conservation need in the state’s Wildlife Action Plan. In fact, rattlesnakes tend to be peaceable, long-lived and not inclined to bite. “Timber rattlesnakes are incredibly docile and sedentary,” Gillingham said. Timber rattlers live mainly in high terrain and prefer remote, rocky areas where they can bask in the sun. Cold-blooded, they raise their body temperature by lying in sunshine or lowering it by crawling into the shade. “I saw one swimming across the Delaware River to get in the sun,” said Gillingham, “and then swimming back at night.” At three to five feet in length, timber rattlesnakes are social with one another, banding together in pods of snakes that are related through parentage, says a Cornell University CONTINUED ON PAGE 54
Like all snakes, timber rattlers have no eyelids and never close their eyes. Between the eyes and the nostrils on both sides are the facial pits, which are small, dark heat-sensors that aid in hunting.

study. The average life span of a rattlesnake is about 15 to 20 years. Because their body temperature changes with the temperature of their surroundings, our timber rattlers do hibernate. They find caves or empty burrows and sleep until warm weather. Like snakes of all kinds, timber rattlers “walk” on their ribs, which are fastened to a section of the backbone. Each section is connected by ball-and-socket joints, giving freedom of movement. At the end of the rattlesnake’s tail is its jointed appendage, its rattle made of keratin. Needed as a warning sign because a snake can’t get away quickly, the buzzing sound of the rattle and the snake’s verbal hiss, says “Back off, you are getting too close to me.” CATCHING FOOD, COZYING UP
Helpful in food gathering is the timber rattlesnake’s facial “pit” that lies between the
eyes and the nostrils on both sides of the snake’s face. “The pits work as a satellite dish, interpreting to the brain of the rattlesnake,” said Gillingham. The facial pits pick up delicate gradations of heat from a prey animal. The snake is then able to judge the distance and direction of the warm object, striking the prey when it comes into reach. The timber rattler uses fangs to snap and strike at rodents, squirrels, frogs or young rabbits. Typically, the snake then injects its victim with venom that shoots through the hollow fangs, like medication through a needle. The snake controls how much venom it needs and will avoid venom use if it’s not

necessary. A snake must work to replenish its store of the poisonous liquid. Mating season for timber rattlers takes place in early summer on into the fall. A female births her young after a gestation period of four to five months. The babies are miniature versions of the adults, including a tiny rattle segment on the tail. In the fall, the young follow their parent’s scent trail back to the den for the winter. Timber rattlers do not go out of their way to be aggressive with humans. Like all wild animals, they much prefer to be left alone. In the case of timber rattlesnakes, those encountering the creature on a hiking trail should keep a 10-foot distance between hiker and rattler. Provoking or harassing a snake is stupid and dangerous. Keep in mind the thoughts of Benjamin Franklin on our timber rattlesnake: “She never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.”

A trip to Mullet Brook Falls STORY AND PHOTOS BY PATRICIO ROBAYO After walking a few miles, you can hear the rush of the water from the Mullet Brook hitting the rocks creating Mullet Brook Falls. After following the blue trail, you walk along the red trail and then move on to the yellow trail. The more you follow the yellow trail, you can hear the roar of the water from the falls—a few more steps, a few decibels louder. Then you are there. Mullet Brooks Falls. The sound of the water rushing and the height of the falls is awe-inspiring as you come face to face with the roaring power of nature. As you stand there watching the water cascading over the rocks and rush down, you think who has stood where you stood. Over the millions of years that the Neversink Gorge has been created, thus creating the Mullet Brook Falls, what have those falls seen? Before you head back to the trailhead and take a short drive back into Rock Hill for lunch or a refresher from the Trading Post, you look back at the Falls and say to yourself, "Yeah, I will be back." 56 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2021
T
he Mullet Brook Falls trail is otherwise known as the Blue Trail East to Mullet Brook Loop Trail in the Neversink River Unique Area.
This 4.4-mile heavily trafficked loop trail is located near Rock Hill, New York. While this trail might see a lot of foot traffic, you can take advantage of all the Mullet Brook Falls’ scenic beauty if you are an early riser. It’s a perfect trail for those who want to get into hiking or just need a brisk morning walk. Grab your friends or go at it alone; the Mullet Loop
Trail never ceases to amaze. Once you step onto the trail, your mind seems to just...let it all go. The hustle and bustle of life sometimes gets in the way, and going for a hike helps you clear your mind and allows you to focus on something positive rather than the CONTINUED ON PAGE 58
As you walk the trails, be aware of where you are stepping. While the trail is well maintained, the trails could use some TLC after winter, but it might be a while before the trailkeepers get to the trail. So mind your step and stay safe. Trailkeepers build bridges like these to help you get over the many brooks and streams that pass through the trail.

Every once in a while, it's a good idea to catch your breath and to admire the scenery around you. You might look down and find this rock stack formation near one of the brooks. Who made it? When did they make it? Rock stacking on trails has been done for years and was used to show the way to go. Nowadays, folks like to stack to let everyone know they were there. While it looks great, it is sometimes suggested not to do this as you disturb the natural world when you displace rocks. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 57
problems and situations that life might bring you. As with all hikes, make sure to come prepared no matter how long the trail is. Bring water, wear proper boots, good pants, a proper shirt and depending on the weather, a jacket. It’s also good to bring a first aid kit and a compass. The trail loop has no cell service, so you cannot rely on that to get to where you are going. You can download a map before you head out or Fully Insured
you can take a photo of the map of the route you choose at the trailhead. Don’t forget the bug spray. Another good idea is to let people know where you are going. Once you get on the trail and as soon as your feet hit the rocks below, you can hear water rushing in the distance. Is it the falls? If you go early in the morning, you can walk a while and listen to the birds sing above you and the chipmunks scurrying about. You are outdoors, let’s enjoy!
