winter’s holiday delights inter is a magical time of year especially in the Sullivan Catskills. As snowflakes fall and the air gets crisper, we anxiously prepare to celebrate our annual American traditions with friends, family and visitors. Our rituals of adorning evergreens and buildings with colorful lights as excited children and adults alike awe the bright spectacles is something we all look forward to experiencing. Delicious buttery treats, scrumptious culinary delights passed down from grandma’s recipe book and hot chocolate are highlights of the season we so desperately anticipate. We can add another tradition to our array of cherished winter activities we celebrate every year. This year, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is taking our holiday traditions a step further. Together, with the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association, they are presenting “Peace, Love & Lights” a light show extravaganza with all the bells and whistles. It will be this season’s best and brightest socially-distant activity to enjoy with family and friends. From the week of Thanksgiving,

November 23 until just after New Year’s Day, January 3, families, couples, and friends will travel by car through one mile of enchanting lights flickering on oversized figurines of dancing bears, hippies, stars, Santa and his elves and so much more…. All they will need to do is to just follow the glow! Visit www.bethelwoodscenter.org for tickets and more information. To continue our holiday customs throughout the Sullivan Catskills with visitors, the SCVA is working with small businesses, main streets and communities that will build on Catskill holiday cheer. Tree lightings, restaurant specials, shopping deals and wintery events will align with the “Peace, Love & Lights” festival encouraging all to take part. These events and the light show will be featured in a brochure, TV and print ads, social media postings and public relations activity will target consumers in the tri-state area to encourage those far and wide to join all of us as we celebrate our winter season. truly find something for everyone that makes for a warm gift this holiday season. There’s also blankets, rugs, children’s toys, yarn, slippers, socks and much more. A majority of the products are made at the farm, and they also support artisans locally and throughout the country and in Peru. The McElroys bought the property in 2013, which had been a dairy farm for over 100 years. They started out with 30 alpacas and now have over 100. “We wanted to raise animals that produced a product,” Kara said. “So we researched and looked into alpacas; we got to visit with the neighboring farm that had alpacas and we learned from them.” Their farm does it all—breed and sells the animals, fiber production and agritourism (agricultural tourism). There’s also an Airbnb on site, which includes a tour of the farm with your stay. They bring their alpacas to many shows across the country (although that has been halted during the pandemic) where they are graded on physical features and also the characteristics of their fiber. The farm is located on one of the highest peaks in Sullivan County so on the drive there and back you’ll get some stunning views.

he holidays are filled with memories of baking cookies or cooking up a feast with your family. But it’s also a time that can be incredibly busy, and sometimes you want the work done for you. A great option is to pick up your holiday treats from the Jeffersonville Bake Shop. Located right on Main Street in Jeffersonville, the bakery offers pies, cakes, cookies, pastries and much more. It opened in late December of last year, just months before the pandemic hit. Owner Lauren Seikaly was worried that nobody would come, but then the exact opposite happened. Neighbors and friends gathered outside, wearing masks and keeping socially distant,

to grab a cup of coffee, a pastry and a nice conversation. “It gave people that little moment of normalcy during their day, even though everything else was shut down and they couldn’t visit with people,” Seikaly said. Seikaly and her husband, Michael Huber, also own Tavern on Main, Vintage House, 52 & Vine, Sprinkles Ice Cream, Winkelried Biergarten and an Airbnb all in the village. In 2016 Seikaly was coming out of Peck’s and looked across the street at the old building, which used to be a lawyer’s office and home. After years of businesses leaving Jeffersonville, she thought Main Street could use a little pick-me-up. “My first vision was looking at this gray falling down house thinking, ‘that would be great for a bakery, paint it pink and sell cookies, that would totally brighten up Main Street,’” Seikaly said. And that’s exactly what she did. After four years of renovation work the bakery is now a charming pink bastion of the community, which is what Seikaly hoped it would be. “Our mission, prior to COVID, was to get everybody out of their house. So building a healthy community by getting people toH O L I DAY

In addition to baked goods, which are baked fresh every morning, the bakery also has a full array of coffee drinks, as well as pre-packaged goods and drinks. In the future they hope to be able to serve hot breakfast and lunch. There’s also an event space upstairs, which is currently on hold but is able to host small gatherings. For the holidays you can place custom orders for cakes and pies and other sweet treats. Just stop by the bakery or call them and you can fill out the form. The Jeffersonville Bake Shop offers a variety of books to choose from (pictured at left) so you can cozy up by the fire and enjoy their fresh baked goods. Even though the pandemic is going on, safely dine inside the bakery with a friend over coffee and something to eat. The decor was inspired by owner Lauren Seikaly’s love of vintage items, which can be seen displayed around the building.

how to spend new year’s eve (inside your house) s we ring in the New Year on December 31, things look a little different than they normally do. With the global pandemic going on, large celebrations cannot take place. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the coming year. Here are some ideas to have a safe and festive New Year’s Eve.

A

Gather in small groups Large gatherings and parties are not recommended this year. The CDC says the risk is higher for indoor gatherings where people cannot remain six feet apart, so take that into consideration. The CDC recommends following state guidelines for gatherings, which are dependent on the rate of infection in a certain area. Order takeout Many restaurants haven’t opened for dining during the pandemic, but luckily many of them are offering to-go orders. Call your favorite restaurant and place an order for delicious food that you can enjoy at home. Play games Playing games with family or friends is a great bonding experience and a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. Gather some board games, or play a round of cards or charades. Watch movies New Year’s Eve is generally a time to stay up late, so why not use all that time and have a movie marathon. Cue

by Isabel Braverman

up some movies on streaming services and come up with a theme. Cook a marvelous meal Speaking of having a lot of time, now is the time to cook a big meal for you and your family. Choose some recipes you’ve wanted to try out and maybe get a little fancy—prepare the table with nice settings and have everyone dress up. Drink fine wine Many people spend New Year’s Eve partying the night away, and you can still do that safely at home. Visit one of the many wine and liquor stores in the area and pick out a nice bottle of champagne or wine to pair with dinner. Don’t forget to make a toast at midnight! Write down your resolutions This is something you can do every year, but this year it feels like it might have more pertinence. This past year has been difficult for many people on many levels. Take this time to reflect and figure out how to implement what makes you feel good. Call family and friends While you may not be able to see them in person, take the time to call friends and family before the clock strikes midnight. Maybe schedule a group Zoom call so everyone can “gather” together. Give back This year has placed a lot of burdens on many people. If you find yourself in a fortunate position, why not think about causes that are important to you. Once you have that, look up some organizations that you can donate to or volunteer your time. It feels good to give back, and the world could really use it right now. Plan your year In a time of such uncertainty, it may be difficult to make plans. But look at the year ahead as a new start, and plan things out even if they’re not that big, like going on a walk with a friend, or taking a mini road trip in your state. It’s always nice to have something to look forward to. Create an at-home spa One thing we can probably all agree on: this year has been stressful. Create a spa in your own home—take a bath, light candles, meditate, whatever you do to feel calm and pamper yourself. We hope you have a happy and healthy new year!
