Sullivan County Golf and Country Club has storied history and is a great place to play
T
STORY AND PHOTOS BY ED TOWNSEND he Sullivan County Golf & Country Club (SCGCC) is the oldest golf facility in the county, with an historic background dating back 90-plus years. The Sullivan County Golf & Country Club was born in February of 1925 when a dozen Liberty businessmen negotiated the purchase of the Gaylord Hull Farm west of the village containing some 160 acres with the purpose of building a nine-hole golf course. Final transfer of the property, which was described in the Feb. 20, 1925 issue of The White Lake Times as “improved land ideally suited to the purpose for which it was bought,” took place on April 1 and work started immediately on the construction of the golf course. The total purchase price for the 160 acres was $20,000. The Times article made note that the ground for the course was in excellent shape, having been 8 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2018
cultivated for many years and was free of topographical obstacles and contained a number of natural hazards. Water and sewer had been laid to a part of the property and water was easily piped to all the greens. It was noted in the contract to purchase that the opportunity to include all local people who would be interested was not offered and only those men who were immediately available were asked to join. It was said at the time of purchase that the new club would not be an exclusive organization and that the opportunity would be offered to all to join at the discretion of the directors. The course was open for play in the late 1920s. The Hull property was described as being located within easy distance of the village of Liberty which the investors said would undoubtedly increase popular interest in the game.
The businessmen also believed that the golf 21, 1931.” History records the facts that the two had course property they purchased would operate to make that end of the village a highly attractive planned to fly directly to Copenhagen but heavy residential district and any new industry seeking fog and rain took them off course and after 32 to locate in Liberty would be offered a site ideally hours they landed in Krefeld, Germany and then located at far less than the land could be bought on to Copenhagen where over 50,000 people greeted them. for if it were owned by private parties. Rourke announced expansion and upgrading the fleet of golf carts and that all leagues are open to nonmembers and senior tees are available to golfers over 70 years of age. “To better serve our growing golf customers we are very pleased to announce that the club has added 12 upscale EZ Go TXT golf carts to the existing fleet,” Rourke said. Liberty Parks and Recreation will also offer programs at the course. “We want to let the general public know that our club facilities welcomes all players from beginners to experienced players and that everyone can have fun here,” Rourke said. The new management team noted that, “the club's Nine and Dine program offers the perfect combination of a quick round of golf coupled with an excellent dining experience in the comfortable atmosphere of Oscar Brown's.” Tony Hirsch is in his fifth year at head groundskeeper. The course plays host to four leagues, Monday Mens, Ladies league on Tuesday, Mens league on Wednesday and a Couples League on Thursday. A Sullivan County Golf & Country Club Champions board contains names of club champions from 1935 with 13 club championships won by the late John “Jack” Coughlin, a true gentleman and outstanding golfer. A hole-by-hole look at the course
This nine-hole golf course offers a whole set of different tees for holes 10-18 and plays to a total yardage of 3,006 yards for nine holes from the mens tees. Par is 36 for men and 39 for women. This 9-hole course plays as follows: Hole No. 1 is a 315-yard par 4. Straight down the middle over the directional flag will put your second shot into the green and the opportunity for a par. Don't hit it short on the second shot as a
small stream runs in front of the green. Hole No. 2 is a 295-yard par-4 and it’s uphill off the tee. Take your drive to the left center portion of the fairway and play to the upper half of the green on your second shot as the green slopes left to right. Hole No. 3 is a 400-yard par-4 with the fairway sloping down hill right to left. Better to play right center for a good second shot to the green. Hole No. 4 is a 152-yard par-3 with an elevated tee taking your tee shot down hill left to right. Club selection is key to a par on this hole. Hole No. 5 is a 280-yard par-4 with water to the left. Take your drive right center for a good approach shot to the green which has bunkers left and right. Hole No. 6 is a 275-yard par-4. Depending on where the tee box is play your tee shot to the right center of the fairway. A small stream runs just below the start of the fairway but really doesn't come into play. A good tee shot here can produce a birdie score. Hole No. 7 is a 422-yard par-4 with an open fairway so let it all out off the tee. A good tee shot and second shot to the green also makes this a possible birdie score. Hole No. 8 is a 545-yard par-5 making it the CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

longest on this course. Open fairway to the left and center and woods on the right. Tee shot should go center of the fairway and club selection is key on the second shot to the green. On your approach shot you will find the green slopes sharply right to left. Placement of the pin determines your club selection. Hole No. 9 is a 395-yard par-4 with Route 52 and trees on the right. A left center tee shot makes for a better approach shot to the green with traps on the right and rear section of the green. This green slopes down from the back of the green to the front landing area. Key to the par here is where you place that second shot on the green and pin placement. Periscopes are installed on the 1st and 7th tees to give golfers a view further down the fairways and this avoids golfers hitting into players ahead of them. the time being, a foreclosure process by the County of Sullivan. There has been no figures released as to what the purchase price would be but figures circulating at that time indicated a price range of around $650,000. When the golf course is sold certificate members would receive their share of the sale price and figures circulating around the community say there are about 25 to 30 certificate members at this time. If there is no sale of the facilities, the certificate members and the board of governors would again be responsible for taking over the management and daily operations.

Josh Geller, foreground, of Brooklyn and Jeffersonville, enjoyed his weekend at the Wulff School of Fly Fishing with his friend, Jonathan Siman. Here the group tests out different weight fly rods to see which one they like.
Wulff School of Fly Fishing still a Beaverkill legacy STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRED STABBERT III
F
or 39 years the Wulff School of Fly Fishing on the Beaverkill has been teaching novice and experienced fishermen alike the finer points of the art. And the one constant through it all has been the spirit of Joan Salvato Wulff, the legendary fly caster who made a name for herself alongside her late husband, Lee Wulff. Joan, who is now one roll cast over 90, is as sharp and enthusiastic as ever about teaching her students the “Wulff Method” of casting. “Loading move, power snap, follow through,” are the words Joan and her capable staff of instructors live by. And these words echo in the students’ ears – 20 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2018

and they even hear them in their sleep – as they attend one of the seven 3-day courses in the Beaverkill Valley this spring and summer. Practice, persistence and finally, some form of perfection, is what the instructors are hoping to instill in their dedicated classes. The Accidental Fisherman The Gellers – Josh and Michelle – heard about a house for sale in Jeffersonville from one of their friends. “We were thinking of buying a house in the country and we found this home in the area by accident,” Josh said. Little did Josh know that this decision would get him hooked on fishing, especially fly fishing. “[After we bought the home] I found out Sullivan County was a great fishing area,” he said. “Fly fishing is a really nice activity but there is so much to learn.” So Josh and his friend Jonathan Siman, signed up for the Trout Fishing Class on April 27-29. “It felt kind of historic. I don’t want to hold myself as an expert but I’m fascinated by the whole culture of fly fishing. “I have gone out four or five times with Phil

Loved the experience Laura Stabbert, a Callicoon native who now lives in New York City, said the Beaverkill Valley “Is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a hidden gem – you just don’t stumble upon it.” Laura was most impressed with Joan Wulff herself, who personally helped Laura learn the roll cast. “She grabbed my hand and helped me cast,” Laura said. “Joan said, ‘This is what it should feel like. It should feel like that every time.’ “It was so cool. Now I know what it should feel like,” Laura said. “I thought Joan was sharp – clearly an expert. sport. Her enthusiasm really shines through. “It makes you want to get better,” Laura said.
The All-Stars: Helping You Get Better Sheila Hassan, who has been an instructor at the school for 15 years, is the director. Her knowledge of casting is evident as she demonstrates the different casts with accuracy and ease. Following several hours of classroom instruction, students surrounded the two ponds to practice as instructors stood at the ready, often grabbing their hand to actually lead them through the casting process – much like a dance instructor leading the waltz. It’s a ballet of “tight loops and lines” as students try and make the perfect cast, picking their leader up off the water ever so slowly, then making the power snap, which sends the fly line behind the fisherman. Once the line has extended behind you, it’s then a smooth, yet forceful, follow through to your target that casts the line and takes the fly along for the ride. Classes were packed full of activities, and the Trout Class included a film on Friday night followed by a weekend of classroom programs and outdoor practice. If you go The Wulff School is just that, a laboratory where classroom and textbooks meets field and stream. Douglas Cummings, who is Joan’s son, now administers the school and said the enrollment is steadily increasing following the devastating floods of 2005 and 2006 and the stock market crash of 2009.
The Beaverkill Valley Inn, just a mile from the Wulff Fly Fishing School, hosted the meals for the anglers and also has overnight accommodations for those wishing to stay nearby.
“Pre-floods and pre-crash we had 200 students and now we have about 120 per summer,” he said. “But it’s building back up.” There are two more Trout Fishing courses left this summer, June 1-3 and June 22-24. There is also a Techniques of Fly Casting course on June 8-10 for those who want to improve their casting technique. Reservations can be made at www.wulffschool.com or by calling 845-439-5020.

There is no shortage of camping opportunities in the Catskills, one of which is Happy Days Campground in Bethel.
Camping in the Catskills STORY AND PHOTOS BY AUTUMN SCHANIL
S
ummertime, especially in the Catskills, is often defined by time spent on rivers and lakes as well as looking for deep-woods places to pitch a tent and camp. Truly, what would summertime be without falling asleep to the sound of peepers peeping in the pond just feet from your tent, or leaving the roof open to gaze at the stars, sitting around the fire telling scary stories or making smores. And isn’t it funny how stress-free we feel after a weekend spent in the fresh air, smelling the trees and the grass, swimming in the cool river beneath the sunshine and being completely unplugged from our phones? Gasp! We may even make real-human connections again. You’ll probably even get a good nights rest in all that beautiful silence where street lamps don’t reach. So whether you're the type who sleeps in a sleeping bag on the floor of a tent, gets cozy under a blanket in the RV or goes electric free in a woodsy cabin, take a peek at some of the amazing camping spots that are right here in the mountains.

The Western Bar-Supper Club-Inn; A Main Street Gem Shines Again BY KAITLIN CARNEY

he Western is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Sullivan County, having greeted its first guests on Upper Main Street in Callicoon in 1852. When Irene Nickolai took the wheel of the Western, she knew she wanted to maintain the glory of the Main Street gem, while updating it to offer dining, drinking, and overnight stays for locals and visitors alike. The Western Bar, Supper Club, and Inn marries Nickolai’s passion for boutique hotels and hobby of interior design with her background in the arts and love of good, homemade food and cocktails.

She has created an experience that will remind you of the original Western with a fluid aesthetic curated from local taxidermists, thrift stores, and merchants, and featuring art from local painters and photographers, including landscape artist James McGinley. The ballroom, which local lore suggests once hosted suffragette meetings and whose balcony President Grant once addressed crowds from, continues to host community events and gatherings throughout all four seasons, complete with a stage, dance floor, and a mahogany bar to match a version in the downstairs main barroom. unique experience while supporting local producers. It is very important to also support local artists, artisans, and musicians. That’s the charm of Sullivan County, you’re able to make these connections, Nickolai explained. The Western is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for dinner and Saturday and Sunday for brunch. Nickolai, relatively new to the restaurant industry, reached out to friend and local chef Henning Nordanger to help create the menu and train her staff. The result is a menu reflecting local specialties and refined homestyle favorites from the smoked trout dip, chicken liver mousse, and steak crostini starters, homemade soups, kale and apple salad, to entrees like the Western, a burger topped with a fried egg, gruyere and served with hand cut fries, Gulf shrimp risotto, and filet mignon with cognac sauce. Rounding out the menu are desserts like Apple Crumb Pie with housemade whipped cream, Brownie a la mode, Banana Cream Pie. The bar offers everything from Western Classic cocktails and signature cocktails to local draft

We’ve created jobs while providing a venue for the community to use.” Nickolai explained when discussing the importance of the Western. “Looking forward, I would like to enhance the music program, to provide a space for art, a good experience for visitors, to welcome people to Callicoon, and to build our cocktail and food program.” And Nickolai is well on her way, having hosted local favorites Mountain Wave, Breach the Barrier, Shlomo Franklin, Clint Westfall and others. In expanding the program, the Western will be a stop on Eilen Jewell’s world tour in August, a major moment for the arts in Callicoon. The Western will also be a stop on the Catskill Carriage, a modern luxury bus designed to shuttle visitors and weekenders from Brooklyn and Manhattan to Monticello, Callicoon, Livingston Manor, and Roscoe. The Catskill Carriage starts Memorial Day weekend, and information about schedules, prices, etc. can be found on catskillcarriage.com You can keep updated on the happenings at the Western on social media, or check out their website at Westerncallicoon.com, or give a call at (845) 887-9871. harlie Sanborn is passionate about bikes and he has turned his passion into his life's pursuit. Cinder Track Bicycles has been a staple of Mountaindale since 2009, and before that the bike shop lived in Livingston Manor. “I have been riding my whole life, even as a child,” said Sanborn, who every chance he gets when he is not at the shop, is on the trails riding. “It's about freedom and getting out there.” Along with friends, Sanborn has biked all across America and loves biking in the Catskills, mostly because of the hills. through Livingston Manor and back through Callicoon. Sanborn was running both bike shops for awhile but Mountaindale soon won him over. Why? “Cause of the rail trails man!,” said Sanborn. “Biking in the Catskills is a riot.” Cinder Track Bicycles is located at the trailhead start of the Mountaindale O&W Rail Trail which stretches from Mountaindale to Woodridge. This year, the shop will be offering a new way to get your ride on and hit the trails. Now with the addition of a garage space next to the main shop, patrons will have the ability to enter from one end and leave through the other side all ready to go for their adventure. “You come in through one door, you get your bike and your helmet and leave through another door,” said Sanborn. “Coming back, it will work the same way. People will bring in their bikes in once they’re done riding the trail.”

Currently, there are over 100 bikes in the fleet and when the camp season is in full swing, all can be rented out. The county has been hard at work fixing up multiple rail trails in the county and promises better trails and conditions throughout the year. “You need a good decent bike, something that is an investment and can be resold or handed down,” said Sanborn, when asked about big box

Going batty about the only mammals that can fly BY KATHY DALEY
T
hey're warm blooded. They nourish their young with their own milk. They often live long lives. Sound familiar? The weird-looking bat is indeed a lot like a human. The only mammal capable of sustained flight, the bat even uses its wings as we do our arms. But they vastly out-hear us with bat radar-like equipment that guides them in flight, their deliberate, high-pitched cries bouncing off obstacles along the way. And they out-eat us in the amount of food, as compared to body weight, that they consume. Mosquitoes, flies, beetles and moths lose their lives to bats that can weigh as little as a half-ounce but can consume 1,000 insects each hour. “Bats are undeniably one of the world's greatest insect controllers,” noted Truth Muller of Rock Hill, “and also one of the greatest pollinators.” Worldwide, bats pollinate important agricultural plants from bananas to mangoes, from cashews to dates and figs. Muller, an 18-year-old bat specialist now studying ecology at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, speaks to school and community groups on the wonders of bats and founded the environmental education outreach program CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

Rock Hill native Truth Muller notes that the month of May begins the ‘pup’ season for bats, when females are birthing their young. Muller, who studies at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, runs an environmental organization, Buddies for Bats, founded in 2011 and is a frequent speaker on bat ecology and conservation.
Buddies for Bats. “It’s vitally important to help people care about bats,” said Muller.

That’s particularly crucial in the face of the fungal disease decimating the bat population in U.S. and Canada. HARD TIMES Bats, which have been known to live into their mid-thirties, have left behind fossils for the last 55 million years. But since 2006, they have been under siege. Twelve years ago, in Howe Cavern near Albany, bats were discovered ailing or dead with a white fuzzy fungus that began at their nose. The disease, eventually named White-Nose Syndrome, attacked mouth and wings, leading to dehydration, unstable body temperature and death. Since then, New York State has lost 85 percent of its most abundant bat, the Little Brown Bat, and Pennsylvania lost more than 95 percent of its bat population. Al Hicks, longtime biologist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation who retired in 2010, spoke in a phone interview about what is now a nation-
wide issue. Hicks continues to serve on the front-lines of dealing with the bat plague that has reached as far south as Texas and as far west as Washington State. He is also the founder of Vesper Environmental LLC, a bat consulting firm. In New York, said Hicks, “Little Brown Bats are 15 percent in number of what they used to be,” although the population that remains seems to show some signs of stabilizing. Seven other bats that appear in New York State have suffered, while the Big Brown Bat, which is ubiquitous, is the least affected by the disease, Hicks said. A network of state and federal agencies is working to investigate White-Nose Syndrome and develop management strategies that don't

First Class Formalwear further damage the ecosystem. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has set up a website, whitenosed syndrome.org, that offers updated information. WINGED AND WARM The disease is particularly serious in that a female bat typically gives birth to only one baby each year rather than a raft of little ones to support the population. In spring, a bat mother will birth a “pup” that is born naked with the trademark pudgy face, large ears and small eyes. Since bats do not have real nests but rather roost in dark nooks and crannies, the mother flies about with the pup clinging to the soft fur of her breast. Or, she may use a little hook on the baby's wing to hang up the pup under a shady tree while she goes hunting. She returns often to nurse her offspring and during the day sleeps beside it, both hanging upside down. Bats in our area tend to be small, from threeand-a-half to six-and-a-half inches long with a wing span that doesn't go beyond 14 inches. CONTINUED ON PAGE 65

Little Brown Bats in our region have been the hardest hit in a fungal plague that has ravaged bat populations since 2006. In this U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service photo, the White-Nose Syndrome, which begins the slow death, is in evidence on these Little Browns. New York State has lost 85 percent of its Little Brown Bat population.

Before long, the newborn pup is flying and using its innate sense of echolocation. As it flies, a bat emits a continuous cry so highpitched that a human ear cannot detect it. Using as many as 30 to 60 cries per second, the highfrequency waves strike obstacles in the bat's path, echoing back to its sensitive ears. The wings automatically react to the signals, and the bat banks, turns and dodges to avoid the obstacle. The wings themselves are similar to the human hand, with its thumb and four fingers. Wing skin is stretched between long fingers and forearms and from there to the legs and tail. The feet boast short claws with hooks

by which the bat hangs when sleeping or at rest, and when it lets go, the wings fan and the bat flies easily. The Pennsylvania Game Commission notes in a report that bats emerging at dusk typically seek a body of water, where they skim the surface for a drink. They then hunt, usually catching insects with wing or tail membrane and transfering the catch to its mouth.
One study showed that each year, bats do $3.7 billion worth of pest control in the U.S. They also serve essential roles in seed dissemination, cave ecosystems and as food for other animals. “It’s the only mammal that can generate the power necessary for flight, and they are the size of your thumb,” said Hicks in amazement. “How can they do that?” CONTINUED ON PAGE 69

Many believe bats are related to rodents. But these flying mammals bear a closer relationship to primates like apes and humans. The bat wing is a double layer of skin stretched over the bones of the bat's arm and fingers. The wing covers all fingers except a short thumb, which is left free. A sharp claw on the end of the thumb forms a hook that bats use to climb trees or rocky walls.

Humans have an obligation to care for the ecosystem, he said. “We have more influence on this planet than any other life force,” Hicks said. “And bats are not unique in what they are going through. There are other plants and animals – the American chestnut tree, the hellbender sala-
mander, the timber rattlesnake that have been affected by fungal diseases spreading worldwide.” “What can we do?” he questioned. “Vote for people who care about the ecosystem. Get your kids and your grandkids outdoors. With our strength and our intelligence comes the obligation to preserve the earth for future generations.”

Professionals: Matt Kleiner and Davis Tuttle. Pro’s favorite hole: My favorite hole at the Villa Roma is the 15th. The par five is reachable in two shots if I hit a good drive. After striking the second shot it’s always exciting while the ball is in the air. You just never know for sure if you carried it enough to clear the hazard if you take a direct line to the flag. If you aim left and try to hit a little fade, you’re then waiting on the first bounce to the green. Too long it goes in the bunker too short it could kick right into the hazard. Very exciting shot on a very good hole.
