The Big Eddy Film Festival is on September 15-17 (see page 24). Opening weekend of the Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods is September 3 (see page 6). Greater New York Councils and Boy Scouts of America, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. They’re dedicated to preserving the history and artifacts of the Ten Mile River Scout Camps, a 12,000 acre reserve that has been serving the Boy Scouts of New York City

The Museum recently underwent an upgrade with Johannes Knoops, a TMR alumnus and an award-winning architect and instructor in design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, proposing and leading the museum’s continued on page 12

renovation which was completed last month. Inside the museum, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find a Franklin D. Roosevelt exhibit, artifacts from three Native American Rockshelters, and artifacts from the lumbering and rafting era,TMR Wildlife, Donut Farm and Slide Farm displays, a large store with a huge selection of scouting memorabilia on sale and much more! There is also a lot to see outside of the museum, like the Kernochan Blockhouse, a

miniature reproduction blockhouse from the 1950s with displays on the pioneering era, and the Cayuga/Kotohke Cabin, an actual TMR open-air cabin from the 1930s, recreating camp life in the 1930s and 1940s. Visitors can also take a self-guided walking tour of the Ten Mile River Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp. The museum is open seven days a week in July and August, as well as select weekends in May, June, September and October.

The Museum also has exhibits showcasing the area’s local history. This includes a vintage donut machine from the Donut Farm, a local family-owned restaurant on Route 97 dating back to the 1940s.

ALSO TO BE SEEN There are few abolitionists as well-known as John Brown. One of the museum’s unique artifacts on display is the lock and key to Brown’s jail cell at Harpers Ferry, which at the time was part of Virginia. Museum Director, Deacon Paul Lumpkin (seen in photo on Page 12), is letting them borrow it. His grandfather was the secretary/historian of the New York John Brown chapter, so this historical object has been in his family for decades.

Dimitris and Paula Vernezos, owners of Yanni’s Gyro Express Café in Monticello, N.Y. (off Route 17’s Exit 105A), take pride in doing just that. “I like to create,” Dimitris said. This has led to a unique menu at the Café, where you’ll discover combinations of food you can’t find anywhere else. Some of these items include the Portabella and Goat Cheese Panini, Lamb and Bruschetta Burgers to name a few. They also offer greek classics like gyros, souvlaki and kabobs, as well as vegetarian

They have crepes, baklava, cannoli’s, blintzes, tiramisu, peaches and cream (their version of tres letches), as well as popular greek desserts like Ekmek Kataifi (shredded phyllo softened with honey syrup then a layer of custard all topped with whipped cream and dusted with cinnamon) and Galaktoboureko (Milk custard made with farina and a mild orange flavor wrapped in phyllo, drizzled with honey syrup then dusted with powdered sugar). Dimitris and his wife Paula opened the restaurant in 2010. He moved to Sullivan County, N.Y. from Greece 27 years ago, starting out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to management, gaining several years of valuable experience in the food industry. “I love this area,” he said. “It’s paradise.” The business has already expanded. 18 C AT S K I L L S

When it originally opened, Yanni’s was much smaller than it is today, but the growing number of customers convinced Dimitris and Paula to add on to the restaurant. The Café has several nicely decorated tables, which creates a great atmosphere for guests to have a meal with friends.The staff is friendly and Dimitris and Paula make sure you feel welcome. “I like talking to customers,” Dimitris said. “They have become my friends. I love people and enjoy what I do. “People say I should go on vacation. I tell them I’m on vacation.” If the weather is nice and you wish to enjoy it, there’s plenty of outdoor seating
