hat could possibly draw you out into the bone-chilling cold of a Catskills winter? How about the sight of a bald eagle regally soaring above your head – or, even more breathtakingly, diving to earth, then suddenly swinging skyward with a fish in its talons? The Delaware Highlands Conservancy can give you that thrilling experience, in a group or on your own. Indeed, eagle-watching has become just about the most popular reason to visit our neck of the Catskills woods this time of year! To visit at your pace, the Conservancy’s Upper Delaware Visitor Center (176 Scenic Drive, Lackawaxen, PA) will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout January and February. Stop by to pick up a map and directions to the observation areas, watch a short film, view interpretive exhibits and speak with knowledgeable locals. Also on weekends in January and February, volunteers will be staffing observation areas throughout the region. The map is available at www.delawarehighlands.org/eagles/eaglewatching/map. einle’s General Store has been the heart of Cochecton Center, NY for well over 100 years. And thanks to the Santana family, that heart continues beating strong. “We’re trying to make this place as good as it can be,” explains Mike Papile, Heinle’s coproprietor (with partner Michelle Market) and son of owners Laura and Nick Santana. It readily shows in the food, prepared in season with vegetables fresh from both Heinle’s own garden and the Gorzynski and Diehl farms just down the road. “We offer breakfast all day,” Mike notes, pointing out options way beyond bacon and eggs, like avocado toast and “The Sweety” (Nutella, banana, ricotta and powdered sugar on pressed challah bread). In addition to an array of burgers, appetizers and salads, Heinle’s is well-known for its huge Cuban and reuben sandwiches.

“People compare them to the ones they get in Miami and Manhattan,” Mike proudly asserts. “We always have two or three daily specials,” adds mom Laura. “And we bake our own pies.” Looking to take out instead? Order ahead, then pick up chips, soda, wine and beer right at the store. (And fill up your car in the same trip – gas or diesel.) Or if you’re staying within 10 miles of the place, ask for delivery ($20 minimum), and you just may meet Mike at your front door! Other than major holidays, there’s never a day someone won’t take your order at Heinle’s – unusual in such a “middle of nowhere” locale. “We just figured if everyone else is closed, somebody’s got to be open seven days a week!” Laura explains. he refurbished hardwood floor shines brighter than ever, the walls gleam thanks to a new paint job, the heat/AC have been restored to fine working order and the digital sound system is the best they’ve ever had. But everything that everybody loved about Skater’s World is still here – the food, the friends, the fun, the funky throwback decor, and of course, the skating. Darrin Edelglass is still here, as well, except now he’s the owner and operator with fiancee Amanda Gonzalez, having purchased the Ferndale, NY landmark three years ago from the family of late owner Ann Blake. “I worked for Ann in the ‘80s and ‘90s,” he remembers.“I started in the skate room and

moved up to DJ, then managing.” This is indeed a place where memories are made every day, where parents who learned to roller-skate on the rink years back now fly ‘round its 8,400 square feet with their own kids. Darrin first set his feet atop wheels here as a Cub Scout, and re-creating that joy and excitement drives everything he does at Skater’s World. “Roller-skating was my sport,” he explains. “It’s just a lot of fun.” This is one of those special places where an entire family can enjoy each other’s company for hours on end – or have space to themselves. Lessons are eagerly offered by 49year skating veteran, roller derby judge and certified instructor Sylvia Ryan.Ten bucks gets you an hour-and-a-half of training, followed by up to three hours of free skating. Sylvia instills the skills of safe falls and proper balance, plus the fun of crossovers, marches and other attention-getting moves. “Skating is forever,” she nods.“There are people in their 90s who are still skating! I never stopped – I think it’s a way to stay young.”
