hat could possibly draw you out into the bone-chilling cold of a Catskills winter? How about the sight of a bald eagle regally soaring above your head – or, even more breathtakingly, diving to earth, then suddenly swinging skyward with a fish in its talons? The Delaware Highlands Conservancy can give you that thrilling experience, in a group or on your own. Indeed, eagle-watching has become just about the most popular reason to visit our neck of the Catskills woods this time of year! To visit at your pace, the Conservancy’s Upper Delaware Visitor Center (176 Scenic Drive, Lackawaxen, PA) will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout January and February. Stop by to pick up a map and directions to the observation areas, watch a short film, view interpretive exhibits and speak with knowledgeable locals. Also on weekends in January and February, volunteers will be staffing observation areas throughout the region. The map is available at www.delawarehighlands.org/eagles/eaglewatching/map. Try eagle-watching with a group for an even better experience! Four bus tours are scheduled: January 14 and 28, and February 4 and 11, with departure times at 10 a.m. 4 C AT S K I L L S

and 1 p.m. all four days (from the Visitor Center in Lackawaxen). Learn about eagles in our region, how they returned from the brink of extinction, and the habitat they need to thrive, while you take a scenic drive with an expert guide on a heated bus and look for eagles. Bus seats are limited, and reservations are required; call 570-226-3164, 845583-1010, or email info@delawarehighlands.org to reserve your spot – $20 for non-members; $15 for members. Dress warmly in layers and wear waterproof boots. Bring binoculars, a camera, snacks, and a bagged lunch. Note: Refunds are not issued unless the trip is cancelled due to weather on both Saturday and the typical Sunday snow date. The complete calendar of events is viewable at www.delawarehighlands.org/newsevents/eventdates. WINTER 2017

The latest owners and operators of Heinle’s General Store – from the left, Michelle Market, Laura and Nick Santana, and Mike Papile – love what they do, and it shows in the food, decor and service inside this historic destination. One of the region’s best delis also features breakfast, to-go items and indoor/outdoor seating – plus there’s a diesel/gas station right on premises.

einle’s General Store has been the heart of Cochecton Center, NY for well over 100 years. And thanks to the Santana family, that heart continues beating strong. “We’re trying to make this place as good as it can be,” explains Mike Papile, Heinle’s coproprietor (with partner Michelle Market) and son of owners Laura and Nick Santana. It readily shows in the food, prepared in season with vegetables fresh from both Heinle’s own garden and the Gorzynski and Diehl farms just down the road. “We offer breakfast all day,” Mike notes, pointing out options way beyond bacon and eggs, like avocado toast and “The Sweety” (Nutella, banana, ricotta and powdered sugar on pressed challah bread). In addition to an array of burgers, appetizers and salads, Heinle’s is well-known for its huge Cuban and reuben sandwiches.

“People compare them to the ones they get in Miami and Manhattan,” Mike proudly asserts. “We always have two or three daily specials,” adds mom Laura. “And we bake our own pies.” Looking to take out instead? Order ahead, then pick up chips, soda, wine and beer right at the store. (And fill up your car in the same trip – gas or diesel.) Or if you’re staying within 10 miles of the place, ask for delivery ($20 minimum), and you just may meet Mike at your front door! Other than major holidays, there’s never a day someone won’t take your order at Heinle’s – unusual in such a “middle of nowhere” locale. “We just figured if everyone else is closed, somebody’s got to be open seven days a week!” Laura explains. Heinle’s is an especially handy stop for people on their way to a Bethel Woods concert. Just eight miles away, the store is a prime continued on page 8

supply depot for tailgating partiers. Outdoor seating, music and ice cream also are warmer-month pleasures, but if you’re stopping by in winter, there’s plenty of room indoors to enjoy a sandwich, read a paper, or catch up on the weather via the big-screen TV. It’s a far cry from when Nick and Laura bought what was a building on the verge of collapse in 2010. “Another few months, the roof would have caved in, admitted Laura, proudly pointing to what was preserved in a three-year renovation effort. “The ceiling’s original, the floor’s original, as are the beams and even the front door! The same aim of all the previous proprietors remains, as well: to make you a repeat customer. “I always wanted to do things to the best of my ability, says Mike, who took over operations from his brother Nicholas (the menu’s creator). “I guess we kind of fell in love with it, he adds, glancing at a nodding Michelle. You will, too ...

pairs, ranging in size from a child’s 8 to an adult’s 14. Sitting rinkside gives you a front-row understanding of that intergenerational appeal – and of the sheer joy of gliding across the floor as your favorite song echoes off the walls. Not a skater? Lessons are eagerly offered by 49year skating veteran, roller derby judge and certified instructor Sylvia Ryan.Ten bucks gets you an hour-and-a-half of training, followed by up to three hours of free skating. Sylvia instills the skills of safe falls and proper balance, plus the fun of crossovers, marches and other attention-getting moves. “Skating is forever,” she nods.“There are people in their 90s who are still skating! I never stopped – I think it’s a way to stay young.”

Skater’s World is a popular and colorful destination for birthday parties (above). While you’ll need to bring your own cake, the rink offers plenty of food and drink, including delicious pizza (just ask Tyler Hulse, biting into a slice at right). Those who aren’t hungry or out skating can while away the hours at the arcade, whose pinball and air hockey games are yet another great throwback to the good ‘ol days.

tures on to Catskill trails. And what trails they are! Not far from Morgan Outdoors is one of the easiest – a level three miles (round-trip) that skirts the back side of funky downtown Parksville, utilizing the right-of-way of the long-gone New York, Ontario & Western Railway. And the variety of trails within a 10-mile radius – both in length and difficulty – makes Livingston Manor a great jumping-off point. Whatever your level of outdoors experience, Lisa can precisely guide you to the best, most memorable hikes in this part of the Catskills. She even has hand-drawn maps which show just the needed landmarks and info. In fact, maps are her abiding love, and at Morgan Outdoors, you can find ones that show fascinating details of both past and present. Don’t want to go out? The carefully curated shop offers books, games and crafts for the family, gift ideas, and weekly classes in yoga, Pilates and stretch-from-a-chair for seniors. Naturally, workshops in hiking and snowshoeing are also regularly provided. “They give people confidence to go a little farther,” Lisa explains. “And more experienced adventurers will find what’s needed for their outings.” So don’t let the winter snows keep you cooped up. Maps and history are twin loves of Morgan Outdoors owner Lisa Lyons, and that’s reflected in a large room at the far end of her shop. In addition to the latest topographical and hiking maps (left), Morgan Outdoors features an exhibit on local history, including the places of lodging and business that long attracted tourists. While some of the pictured spots (above) no longer exist, they remain points of interest to both visitors and locals. 16
