categories, starting with just one yellow gown. A customer loved it and that was the beginning of the gown business. Helen felt the need for more stylish and “better” fashions. So…they built a charming shop. People discovered the new venue and in no time, business was buzzing with a clientele made up of locals to hotel owners and their guests as well. In the 80s, Patty became her business partner. Together they went on buying trips to Las Vegas, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami and more often Manhattan. Patty, a graduate of Parsons School of Design, assisted customers, worked with the models preparing them for the runway and took charge of many of the office responsibilites. Together, they presented over 100 events for numerous organizations, hotels, churches, synagogues, hospitals and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for their charities.

That included working with Anne Landers at a Waldorf Astoria show, Designer Oleg Cassini, Congressman Ben Gilman and many other prominent people. Barbara Bedell, of the Times Herald Record, happily did the show commentary for 20 years. Patty’s relationship with the ladies who visit her shop is beyond that of a traditional one. “Some of my customers have become my best friends,” Patty says. “Quite frequently, I’ll change my personal plans to accommodate the busy schedules of all my clients.” It’s worth the drive to stop by and visit this very unique “treasure” of Masten Lake. For the men, there’s a floating dock to relax and do some fishing while their “special lady” does her shopping. Gift certificates are always available. Her lovely fully equipped one and two bedroom cottages are available for seasonal rental – weekends, weekly and monthly. rom the state of New York, Italy is over 4,000 miles away. Or is it? Believe it or not, Italy has never been closer. The opera singing talents of owner Tom Caltabellotta and delicious cuisine prepared by fiorentino chef Roberto Uccelli at the Dead End Café in Parksville, N.Y., a short drive off Exit 98 on Route 17 (Future Interstate 86), will transport you there. As soon as you enter the Café, you’re greeted by Tom before the friendly staff escorts you to your seat. Tables are neatly arranged, each decorated with a bottle of red wine. The restaurant, softly

continued from page 21 lit, sets a great mood, whether you’re hoping to entertain a date or have a party of guests to celebrate a special occasion. Entrees include vegetarian cuisine such as Fettuccini Alfredo to Penne Alla Vodka to chicken dishes like Florentina (peppers and portobello mushrooms in a sherry sauce), meat and seafood dishes, and much more. All entrees come with a salad and several choices of dressing. The Dead End Café also has several tasty appetizers including Crespelle al Forno (homemade Italian crepes filled with spinach, prosciutto and parmesan cheese, oven baked in a parmesan sauce). Before receiving your food, guests are treated to sliced Italian bread and olive oil. While it doesn’t appear on the menu, make sure to ask your server what’s available for dessert. Tom and his late wife, Michele, bought the old house which has since been transformed into the Café in

1989. They were on a vacation in Key West, eating at different restaurants, when the idea to start one of their own was born. They’d been living in the region since 1985 when they bought a home on the Willowemoc. The restaurant was a success and they were soon cooking over 100 meals a night. When Michele became ill, they closed down the restaurant for a few years, but reopened in 2015. On what he loves the most about owning the Café, Tom says, “Feeding people. My wife would have said, ‘I don’t miss the work, but I miss the people.’” As if the food isn’t enough of a reason to visit the Dead End Café, Tom’s amazing opera talents are free of charge. His parents from Sicily, relocated to Staten Island, where he grew up. Having worked for several printing companies and having spent time as a proofreader, words have always been important to Tom. He has performed for over 67 years

and has yet to get tired of it. “When one sings…it’s quite an experience,” explains Tom. “It’s next to God.” There used to be several Italian newspapers and radio stations in NYC, which for the most part have gone away. However, Tom is keeping the tradition alive. “The songs I sing are the old songs from Naples and Sicily,” he said. Tom sings at the restaurant a couple days a week. Talented 23year-old pianist Danielle Strassman accompanies his singing. The Café is open year round Wednesday through Sunday.
