rollin’ down the river takes on a new meaning! Story by Dan Hust ho doesn’t like tractors? (Hey, if you’ve never seen one, then you just don’t yet know you like them!) And who wouldn’t like a parade of tractors? (Ditto if you haven’t seen one of those!) Set aside some time between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 11 to mosey on down to Lower Main Street in Callicoon, NY for the one and only Callicoon Tractor Parade! Dozens upon dozens of tractors – locally owned, antique and modern, many still in use on area farms – will putter and sputter through this charming hamlet’s business district. You’ll see the weathered faces of farmers who’ve spent entire lives in the fields, followed by the fresh faces of their progeny, proud to be carrying on a local tradition. It’s Americana at its best, and after cheering on the tractors and their drivers, you can peruse an eclectic array of shops and restaurants in a town that comfortably mixes old with new. Then you can amble down Lower Main to the Delaware Community Center, where a tasty chicken BBQ awaits all! (And if the kids are still full of energy after a meal and parade, the Center has a playground and plenty of space for them to run around!) Oh – and if you’re up between 7 and 11 a.m., kick off the day with a pancake breakfast with all the fixings at the Callicoon Firehouse on Route 97. (It’ll ensure you’re first in line when the highly collectible Tractor Parade t-shirts go on sale later that morning!)

The Museum is already open, showcasing the story of Woodstock and the ‘60s, and a variety of performances and classes are under way at both the Event Gallery and the Conservatory. Now it’s the Pavilion’s turn to bring the biggest acts and brightest talents to the largest performance venue in the Catskills! Here’s the rundown (check out bethelwoodscenter.org or call 1-866-781-2922 for the latest info, tickets and special offers):

hy visit Bethel Woods for the day when you can spend an entire weekend just down the road – with shuttle bus service to every concert? Not that you have to leave Bethel Hideaway Campground Resort to have an outstanding time. Maybe you’ll pitch a tent during the July 15 Rock Fest & Poker Run, or park your RV for the June 23-25 Welcome Home Zac Brown

Story by Dan Hust, photos courtesy of Bethel Hideaway Campground Indeed, that’s how Jennifer and her husband Frank started camping – with their three sons. But while they loved spending whole summers in the woods, the campground they visited had few activities for families, so Jennifer’s creativity sprang into action. She put together a slew of arts and crafts,

In fact, the live bands, tie-dyed shirts (make or buy your own!) and a close-knit atmosphere give a sense of what the original 1969 festival must have felt like – albeit without drugs, nudity or other issues. “This is a very family-oriented place,” Jennifer Colaiacomo assures. “Parents bring their kids the first year, and the kids bring them back the next year!” 16

rooms, showers, laundry facilities, convenience store, arcade, outdoor stage and events patio. Grocery and firewood delivery are available, as are shuttle bus trips to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and local distilleries, plus housekeeping and storage/opening services for RVs. Popular attractions include the inground pool, fishing/boating pond, playground, horseshoes, arts & crafts activities, volleyball, basketball, S’mores Roasting Saturdays, and monthly bonfires. which morphed into larger events like a poker run and a “human nacho” competition down a cheese-slathered slide and into a vat of salsa (really!). When the chance came to run an entire campground themselves, they poured their passion into restoring a 70-year-old camping destination in the forested heart of Bethel, NY. “We left our jobs, took our 401(k)s and said, ‘Alright, this is what we’re going to do for the rest of our lives!’” Jennifer relates. Last year, they bought the former Swan Lake Camplands and turned it into Bethel Hideaway Campground, with the goal of making it the family-friendliest overnight spot in the Catskills. Water and sewer systems were replaced. The inground pool was lovingly restored. Buildings were removed, added, painted. And a number of clever ideas were implemented. Take, for example, their motto of “carefree camping” – alleviating the sweat, dust and hassle of erecting a tent. “We try to have everything in its place, ready for you,” Jennifer explains. This “resort camping” experience includes $25/person shuttle bus service to Bethel continued on page 18

Woods concerts just a few miles away – usually preceded by moonshine tastings on the campground’s patio by specialty vendor Bunker Brothers (if for no other reason than ensuring folks are lined up to board the bus on time!). “We like to think of ourselves as extending the experience people have while visiting Bethel Woods and the distilleries,” says Jennifer. But you better book now – the Welcome Home ZBB 2017 weekend, for example, is nearly sold out. Yet even when the 150 campsites are fully booked (around 800 campers), there’s plenty of room for kids, parents and grandparents. Every site is 100x175 feet, and Hideaway’s 32 acres feature a playground, a café, a store, a patio, an outdoor stage and a scenic pond. Conveniences include electric and water at every site (plus sewer at some RV spots), two bathhouses and laundry facilities. And while seasonal campers are present, they’re carefully chosen by Jennifer and Frank, who want them to be a welcoming presence to the new faces arriving every weekend. “We are not a seasonal campground,” Jennifer explains. “We only accept a certain number every year. When someone wants to spend a whole season here, we want to make sure they’re a good fit.” This is a place focused on all ages, with teen, baby boomer and country/westernthemed concerts (just to name a few) 20 out of the 26 weekends Hideaway is open. “We bring everyone together,” says Jennifer – and not just families, but campers who’ve never met before. “At the end of the night, after the band plays, they’re all friends for the rest of their lives!”
