‘It’s great to live here’ ow often have we visited a place and thought, “It would be great to live here.” What gave us that impression or feeling? Was it the well-kept streets and public spaces? Maybe the variety of events and activities for a range of audiences. Could it have been the connection to nature; or the proximity to a big city? Was it diversity; a bustling main street; or stillness and quiet? Perhaps it was a palpable sense of connection, community pride and spirit. Sullivan County has all of this and so much more. We have historically been a place of healing. Our industries have been based in agriculture and tourism. In the next generation, when they speak about Sullivan County, they will also reflect on a community that is resilient, tenacious, made up of individuals who knew how to pull themselves up by their bootstraps; change agents who did not stand by idly, but rather took matters in their own hands to make things happen. That is the essence of Sullivan Renaissance. Since 2001, thousands of volunteers have championed

hundreds of initiatives in all 15 towns and 6 villages of the county. What began as a gesture to spruce up and bring people together through the act of planting flowers, has become a grassroots movement. This movement unites efforts of volunteers, with investment by businesses, changes in policy by municipalities, and an allaround feeling that we can be, and are, a place people love to call home. As Sullivan Renaissance enters its 20th year, the impact has resulted in a profound sense of purpose. A connection to neighbors and places, and a renewed pride for Sullivan County is tangible to those who live, work, and visit. We are 20 years and growing strong. Be part of the movement. Dig In! where cravings are created ast Licks is no doubt a staple in the Village of Liberty. When owners Louis DiCostanzo and Jonathan Martinez took over at the end of 2017, they not only kept the tradition customers love, but also brought about many exciting changes. DiCostanzo and Martinez, who are brother-in-laws, renovated the whole place in 2019, making it more cafe style, and added a full kitchen, which now allows them to offer breakfast and hot items. Also, on the culinary side, Martinez has enhanced the freshness of ingredients used and increased the quality of meats. Last Licks uses Boars Head meat products, and aside from that, everything else is sourced locally and prepared in house. The duo work well together, with DiCostanzo handling business operations, while Martinez makes the magic happen in the kitchen. They also have a wealth of experience with food. DiCostanzo also owns Luigis Zeppole in Bethel, NY. You’ll often see them at local festivals and street fairs, and at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Martinez is a U.S. Army combat veteran. Before entering the military, he spent several years in the bakery at

Before Last Licks, Martinez spent six years working at The Heron, a popular restaurant in Narrowsburg, NY. Martinez’s fiance and Louis’ sister, Meagan, is also very involved. “She’s a big help to me and the business,” Martinez said, adding that she assists in developing and researching their social media, and was the influence behind a number of their dishes.” At Last Licks, DiCostanzo and Martinez were adamant to keep the menu items customers love. For example, many of their sandwiches are named

after surrounding hamlets. Martinez spent a large amount of time learning the essence of Last Licks, ensuring it remains what people love about it. Martinez has also added a bevy of tasty, new additions to the menu. So bring your appetite. You can never go wrong with one of their Reubens. The sweet and spicy roast beef is another favorite, as the sandwich features caramelized onions which are marinated for eight-to-12 hours. Martinez has also received rave reviews for his ‘El Cubano’ sandwich with roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles with mustard and garlic aioli, all served on a panini. In addition to their everyday menu, Martinez has a series of rotating specials based on what he feels inspired to make. One of these recent specials was a Pico De Gallo Burger! His homemade soups are another favorite among customers. Last year he made over 370 different varieties. So always check his chef special board. There’s also plenty for vegetarians as well. A popular go to has been Martinez’s Power Bowl, which features sauteed Blackened Spinach and a fried egg over easy. Last Licks also offers a number of salads and a tasty sandwich called the Bella Portobello –– a marinated porto-

Last Licks boasts a comfortable and relaxed vibe, even during the busy lunch rush. But no matter the crowds, Martinez and his friendly staff will make sure you’re taken care of. They pride themselves on their customer service, always going the extra mile. In the rare event a customer is unhappy, they always reach out and find out why. Locally, it’s no secret that Sullivan County’s health ranking is less than ideal –– the second worst in the state to be exact. Last Licks is doing their part to improve it. “I want to introduce people to healthier eating,” Martinez said, “and introduce our customer base to creativity and understanding quality of ingredients.” One of his favorite memories was when a child ordered his Italian Sausage and Kale soup. When the child heard the word Kale, they said, “That’s too healthy.” After trying it, they instantly loved it and ate the whole thing. Children are often hard to please. Changing people and especially children’s perspective on food is what Martinez loves most. “If people see how food is created and prepared, it changes their perception and they’re like, ‘wow that’s great.’” The Mediterranean Quinoa Salad Bowl is always a healthy option. Whatever you choose, stay awhile as Last Licks boasts a friendly atmosphere.
