T

he game of golf runs deep into the roots of the Kubenik family and many of its players get together most Sunday mornings at the Villa Roma Country Club, depending on who is available. Avid golfers all, they play a round on the championship course before gathering at patriarch Henry Sr. and Anna’s house for Sunday dinner – just a few miles down the road. Families that play golf together have fun together and age is not a factor, as the Kubenik family of golfers ranges from age 14 to 89. The family also competes in tournaments CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

and golf leagues and always tries to make it to one of their most popular events – the St. George Catholic Church tournament in August at the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club.

The Patriarch and Matriarch

The couple at the root of this family tree and the family heads are Henry and Anna Kubenik Sr., who still play golf and spend half the year in their home at Kenoza Lake and the other six months in Port Charlotte, Florida. Henry, 89 (he will turn 90 on June 14) and Anna, 83, have enjoyed the game for some 20 years and play at the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club and at various golf courses in Florida. August 10, 2005 was a great golf day for Henry Sr. to remember as he scored his first and only holein-one on the 11th hole at Swan Lake – the same hole son Eric scored his ace almost five years earlier on August 5, 2000. The uphill 156-yard par 3 with a sloping green is always a tough par and even tougher hole in one. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

The senior Kubeniks do not play in any leagues and enjoy working around their Kenoza Lake grounds during the summer. Besides being active in this great game of golf the Kubeniks have been the owners and operators of Kohlertown’s Kohler Lumber Company since 1975.

The Professional

The ranks of the Kubenik family during the time frame 2006-2014 even featured a Class A Professional Golf Association (PGA) Pro until 33year-old Jared Kubenik decided in 2014 that he wanted to return to the amateur ranks and go to work in the family business at Kohler Lumber Company in Jeffersonville. Jared noted that he definitely enjoyed his stint in the PGA ranks, but that it was difficult to make a decent living. Jared has been playing golf for some 25 years and presently plays to a 0 handicap in leagues at the Villa Roma. As a teenager he played five years on the Jeffersonville-Youngsville varsity golf team

The man and the Bashakill: part – and protector – of each other Mike Medley is very much in love with the wildlife management area within our borders – and he wants more people to know about it STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST

M

ike Medley utterly adores the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area, but he isn’t one of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, who photograph its scenic expanses throughout the year. Don’t get him wrong: it’s a spectacular place to shoot.

22 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2015

“I just feel a picture doesn’t capture the way I ... see it,” he explains. Maybe that’s because he sees the threedimensional wonders of the Bashakill more often than most, living next door to it in Westbrookville. “It’s my ‘backyard.’ I go every day by bicycle,

car, hiking,” he says. “It’s so quiet, peaceful and pretty.” In an irony not lost on him, Mike is also one of the Bashakill’s most frequent promoters, constantly encouraging people to come and learn more about this unique and very special place, peace and quiet notwithstanding. “It’s a wildlife management area – it’s not a preserve,” he notes. So he loves crowds just as much as the solitude. “Wednesday I have 50 kids coming in from Monticello High School,” he relates matter-offactly on an early May morning. “The whole point is to educate them and to enjoy the beau-

ty. My satisfaction comes from that – to see someone get excited about their first time seeing an eagle or an osprey.” Mike sees in visitors the same wide-eyed amazement that gripped him nearly two decades ago when he and wife Paula moved to a cathedral-ceilinged log home overlooking the Bashakill Valley. Though his prior home had been just up the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County’s Cragsmoor, Mike knew relatively little about the Bashakill – except that he treasured its unspoiled beauty. Mike Medley is a familiar face at the Bashakill and has in turn made the unique natural resource familiar to hundreds of visitors over the years, many of whom have become regular returnees – if not members of the Basha Kill Area Association, the nonprofit steward of the Bashakill, led by Mike’s wife Paula.

“I didn’t know a lot about wetlands before I came here,” he recalls, wrinkling his nose when people dismiss it as a “swamp.” “There is so much to see here that you don’t realize.” Mentors like Gary Keeton, John Haas and Ed Morris gave Mike the education he needed – and has now put to use in joining their ranks as a public guide and teacher. “I don’t consider myself a naturalist,” Mike corrects, noting that requires a formal degree he never pursued. “I’m an outdoor educator.” Mike particularly enjoys leading hikes where he points out the flora and fauna so extensive in the Bashakill – migrating songbirds and waterfowl, fish both evoluCONTINUED ON PAGE 27

tionarily modern and prehistoric, creatures of the day and night, and plants both rare and common. But he’s also at home talking about the history of the Bashakill – the origin of its name, the way in which it was once both dammed and drained, the canal and railroad that burrowed through its fringes, and the manner in which its sensitive landscape was ultimately protected. Indeed, the latter played a large part in bringing Mike to Westbrookville. Born outside New Haven, Connecticut, Mike grew up in a semi-rural suburb where fishing, hiking and hunting were still part of local life. Inspired by the Brothers of the Holy Cross who taught him in grade school, Mike joined their order and earned a liberal arts degree from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He spent the next 15 years as a houseparent to orphaned teenagers at the Pius XII School and Boys Home in Chester, NY, overseen by Catholic Charities. He also ran the recreation program.

A switch to social work at a secular children’s home in Dutchess County’s Millbrook led him to Paula, at the time a coworker and eventually his wife. Mike landed a special education teacher’s job with Orange-Ulster BOCES, where he spent 22 years before retiring. The couple lived in Cragsmoor during that time, falling in love with the hiking and other outdoor opportunities atop the Shawangunk Ridge. “That was the beginning of the environmental

stuff,” Mike smiled. “They [the Village of Ellenville] wanted to put windmills up there and destroy the fragile ecology of the pine barrens.” Paula was by that time the president of the Cragsmoor Association, which vehemently protested the plan. After more than a decade of fighting, the project was dropped, and today the state administers the targeted property as part of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Mike ended up working for the Nature CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

Conservancy for seven years, leading hikes and running a hunting program. Eventually, Mike and Paula tired of taking care of “a big old house” and looked around to downsize. Though Cragsmoor had long been their home, the Bashakill – and a savvy real estate salesperson – exerted a strong pull. There’s this Basha Kill Area Association (BKAA), she told the couple, and they could use more volunteers to protect the wetlands. Mike was only tangentially aware of the Bashakill, having helped blaze the Shawangunk Ridge Trail high above it. “I had to re-educate myself,” he acknowledges. At the same time, he became an educator with the BKAA and Paula its president. “As Paula became more involved,” he recalls, “I became her ‘hands-on’ person.” Under Paula’s leadership, the BKAA membership swelled to 800 – and with that increased awareness came an increased need for people like Mike to spread the word that the BKAA exists to protect and promote the state-managed site.

Yes, but you can also catch him standing along the shoreline, gaping at the beauty of this place just as much as any newbie. “There is always something going on ... and it changes all the time,” he says, eyes flashing with endless curiosity. “There is such a richness in this place.” That includes the diversity of people he gets to meet – which explains why the peace and quiet of the Bashakill isn’t something he’s trying to keep to himself. “I meet wonderful people here, from all over,” Mike says. “... I like living here. You feel like you’re a part of it.”

Bonding over fishing dates on the Neversink River:

Love of fly fishing is a natural for Phelans 36 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2015

F

ly fishing has always been a family affair for the Phelans of Westbrookville, and love for Jeff and Erin blossomed on fishing dates along the banks of the Neversink River. Jeff, who comes from a long line of outdoorsmen, first picked up fly fishing in his early teens when his father, Francis, taught him how to cast. But it wasn’t until he was in his 20s that he really turned in his spinning reel for a fly rod. Wife Erin has been the assistant executive director at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum since 2006, where Jeff is a frequent visitor and the center’s “No. 1 volunteer,” according to Erin. Erin and Jeff both met in high school; their first date together was the senior prom. But Erin really started fly fishing after they got married as a way to spend more time with

y

Jeff. “It was one of those situations where if you can’t beat him, you just have to join him,” laughed Erin. She soon discovered that she not only enjoyed the sport, but that she took to it like a fish to water. “She wasn’t immediately into the whole thing,” joked Jeff, “then she turned into Calamity Jane.” In her spare time, Erin builds bamboo fishing rods for the family. “We order the bamboo from China,” said Erin. “It makes for a very strong rod, and depending on your particular style, it can be flexible or firm.” Without even trying to raise their daughters Alicia and Allie as fly fishers, the Phelans were happy to see their kids develop a great love of the outdoors. “I remember one time in the car, Allie was in her booster seat and we came down [Route] 17 and there is a spot just beyond Monticello that you can see so far almost to the Hudson Highlands,” said Erin. “She says, ‘Mommy look at that view’ – that appreciation she learned from being outdoors.” “We didn’t start out to raise our kids to be fly fishers,” said Erin. “The truth is that we were never big on babysitters, so every time we went to the river to do some casting, the girls would come along.” They started out just playing on the banks while Jeff and Erin would fly fish. Occasionally, the girls would skip a rock across the water and scare off all the fish. Alicia is the designated caster of the family. Now 22 and a veterinarian assistant, she started showing great skill for the sport at an early age. When she was only 11, she took second place in the annual “Casting for Recovery” cancer fundraiser, getting beat by a middleaged fly fishing guide.

Allie is described by her father as the family’s resident fly tier. She remembers legendary local fly fisher Joan Wulff as “the nice lady I tie flies with.” Family fishing trips were a big part of the Phelan family tradition. “For all the chaos and drama, those were the best times,” said Erin with a nostalgic smile. “I used to play this CD called Fishing Music on opening day and on weekend car trips,” said Erin. “I remember the song to the Andy Griffith show was on there and one song about

away. When we came back the salmon was gone.” The Phelan clan has fished some of the premier fishing spots in North America; including Alaska, Colorado, the Adirondacks and, of course, the Catskills. “You really can’t go anywhere bad in the Catskills when it comes to fishing,” said Jeff. These days it’s getting tough to wrangle the whole family together for a fishing trip like old times. Alicia is busy with work, but she still gets out to go fly fishing with her boyfriend, Corey. Allie goes to school and works part time at Danny’s Village Inn in Wurtsboro. And Erin is overseeing the renovations at the Fly Fishing Museum with Jeff by her side helping out. But rest assured that the call of the rifts and eddys of the local streams and rivers will once again call the Phelans’ name, and their love of the great outdoors and fly fishing will once again be reunited.

Wikipedia notes that largemouth bass “uses its senses of hearing, sight, vibration, and smell to attack and seize its prey. Adult largemouth are generally apex predators within their habitat…” In some areas, largemouths have been known to displace native species when introduced. The highest recorded weight is 22 lbs. 4 oz.

CONTRIBUTED ILLUSTRATION

A 19th century books refers to smallmouth as “ounce for ounce and pound for pound the gamest fish that swims.” The fish were spread throughout the United States via the Erie Canal and railroad. According to Wikipedia, smallmouth can migrate more than 60 miles and because “it is intolerant of pollution, the smallmouth bass is a good natural indicator of a healthy environment, though it can better adjust to changes in water condition than most trout species.” The alltackle world record for a smallmouth is 11 lbs. 15 oz.

and you must control it and keep it in the right perspective. Fishing bass tournaments will make you a better fisherman. When competing you will want to update your fishing tackle to help you catch more and larger bass. Better rods and reels will make it easier to cast and retrieve. You will want to change line more often because you want it to lay straight on the water – without twirls and twists – and this will help you set the hook on a fish quicker and the end result will be more fish caught than missed. And you will want to update often for new modern lures with different colors to outfish other anglers. Bass tournaments are scheduled in advance and you don’t get to pick that perfect day to go fishing. The tournament will take place regardless if it’s raining, windy, sunny or cold, thus making you fish under all weather elements and conditions. This will make one a better experienced bass fisherman. CONTINUED ON PAGE 68

Bass tournaments are not for everyone – factors such as working days and hours and family obligations may make it impossible to fish on tournament days. But that doesn’t mean you can’t go out bass fishing by yourself, with your family or friends, and even if it is just for a few hours to enjoy the great bass fishing we have here in Sullivan County. Shore fishing for bass could be done, but of course you are limited as to where you can fish. With a boat – whether it is a small aluminum or a specialized bass boat – once you get on the lake you can most likely fish all around it. Some good bass fishing lakes here in Sullivan County that come to mind and have free public access launching and parking areas are: White Lake, Swinging Bridge Reservoir, Lake Huntington, Morningside Lake, Toronto Reservoir and Lake Superior (small launch fee). There is also excellent bass fishing in the New York City Reservoirs and the Delaware River. There are many private lakes in Sullivan

County where one must get permission to go fishing. One excellent bass lake where they have boat rentals is Hunter Lake in Bethel (845-4824987). There are also boat rentals available on nine-mile long Swinging Bridge at the Swinging Bridge Lake Marina (845-794-7339) and Morningside Lake in Hurleyville (845-4334-5877 or 7337). Bass season officially opens this year on Saturday, June 20 and ends on November 30. Bass must be 12 inches in length or longer and the daily limit is five per angler. Bass can be also fished for from December 1 to the third Saturday in June of the following year. During this time “Catch & Release” only will be allowed and only artificial lures may be used. Take advantage of the great bass fishing we have here in Sullivan County and who know, we may see you on the waters. If we can be of any further assistance, don’t hesitate to call us at 845-482-4987. Jack and Kay Danchak have been writing the “Sportsman Outdoors” column in the Sullivan County Democrat for over 30 years. Jack is the longtime president of the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County and Kay serves as director of events for the Federation.

About 20 inches long with glossy black plumage and stout feet for walking, crows are social animals and are among the most intelligent. Studies show they can recognize and remember the faces of humans who have either helped or harmed them.

o crow admirers like Cornelius Alexy, it’s no surprise that biologists consider the big black bird with the clamorous voice akin to the chimpanzee in intelligence. Down through the years at his farm on Jim Stephenson Road in Jeffersonville, Alexy has befriended at least three crows to where they’d agree to perch on his arm or head. “The way they act, the way they hold their heads tilted to one side looking at you – they’re really amazing,” said Alexy. Each, he said, had fallen out of a nest and was

fed bits of canned dog food at first and, later, multi-colored dry dog food pellets. For play, Alexy would toss the kibbles toward the bird and the crow would catch each one in its mouth. “He’d then drop the colors he didn’t like and swallow the ones he did,” Alexy said. It seems Alexy’s crows also manifested what scientists term “altruism,” that is, when an animal behaves in a way that benefits others at a cost to itself. “We had chickens running around, and the crow would take the dog food pellets and put them in a row for the chickens to eat,” said Alexy.

– you dropped something – good to see you – can you scratch the back of my head? They thrive on social interaction whether it’s with fellow crows or humans lucky enough to get close. “They are incredibly social, looking for responses, craving interaction. If they are by themselves, they are lonely, he said. Mary Lewis marveled at how much the crows picked up about her, literally and figuratively. “In winter I would sometimes lose a mitten, and several times, the crow would pick up that mitten and know where it should be and drag that mitten to me in the barn. Lewis’ crows quickly learned the names she gave them. Even when Quetzal, one of her crows, grew mature enough to go off and find his own mate, he still responded to Lewis’ voice. “At one point, he was nesting on Hahn Road near Apple Pond Farm. I rode a horse up the road with some pigeon eggs for his young. I called ‘Quetzal’ and he flew to me, gently took the egg out of my hand and flew to the nest. Quetzal never did forget his name. “There’s nothing more awesome, said Lewis, “than seeing a flock of crows flying overhead and one of them coming down when you call him by name.

Keeping crows from feasting in the yard outdoors and promptly remove food when they finish eating. • Feed songbirds with feeders that exclude large birds and clean up spillage under feeders promptly and regularly. Crows are omnivores – they eat both plant and animal foods – and will sometimes come to eat one food, such as insects, but then PHOTO BY CHARLES HAYES stay around or return to eat another, such as garden produce. You won’t be able to remove all potential crow food sources, but if you remove the easy meal, the crows may decide to look elsewhere.

Trash, pet food, food put out for other birds and food waste dumped into compost are all attractive to crows. B

oating and water recreation on the many rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs and ponds in the Catskill/Delaware region has always been a popular summertime activity that draws thousands of visitors who come specifically to frolic in the cool, clean waters. Whether you’re a seasoned pro with your own watercraft or are new to the joys of boating, opportunities abound for water lovers to enjoy the serene, unspoiled beauty that our waterways offer. But please, boat safely.

Upper Delaware River “Being on a boat that’s moving through the water, it’s so clear. Everything falls into place in terms of what’s important and what’s not.” – James Taylor The Upper Delaware is a part of the National Wild and Scenic River System that winds 76 miles through the highlands of Hancock, NY to just north of Matamoras, Pa. The boating season generally runs from mid-April through Columbus Day, and public river access is available on both the Pennsylvania and New York sides of the river. Access points range from 3 to 20 miles apart along the river and are jointly managed by the National Park Service and the agencies which own the land. The Delaware River is the longest free-flowing river in the Northeast. It includes riffles and Class I and II rapids between placid pools and eddies. Its average depth is 4 to 5 feet, but 12- to 18-foot

holes are common, and many are even deeper, such as the Big Eddy’s 113 feet deep “plunge pool,” believed to have been created by a glacial waterfall, at Narrowsburg. Even during the dog days of summer, the river can be cold enough to cause hypothermia, so boaters should always be prepared for cold water and should always wear a personal flotation device, or PFD (commonly referred to as a life jacket). Private boat liveries rent canoes, rafts, tubes, and other watercraft and can arrange a river trip suited to your wishes and abilities. The liveries provide safety instruction, a properly fitted life jacket, and they will shuttle you back to your vehicle. If you own your own boating equipment and wish to launch it at one of many public river access points, be sure to have a valid state registration, which is required for all motorized watercraft, and commercial non-motorized vessels (canoes, rafts, kayaks).

THE LIVERIES

The following canoe liveries are licensed under Incidental Business Permits to operate within the boundaries of Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Some establishments also have campgrounds or lodging. Many also have CONTINUED ON PAGE 78

unfiltered water system in the world, provides 9.4 million gallons of drinking water daily to eight million New York City residents and one million residents in Westchester, Orange, Ulster and Putnam counties. This network of 19 reservoirs within a 2,000 square mile watershed is fed mainly by precipitation and is considered the “Champagne” of drinking water, consistently winning annual taste tests against other NYS water sources. In 2008 NYC Department of Environmental Protection, which has oversight of the watershed and reservoirs, developed a three-year pilot program for recreational boating on the Cannonsville Reservoir. The program’s success has supported expanding the Recreational Boating Program to the Neversink, Pepacton and Schoharie Reservoirs. Recreational boats including, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, sculls or sailboats are now allowed on all four reservoirs and boaters do not have to be actively fishing to participate in this program (as they did in the past). The goal of the program was to expand regional recreational opportunities for watershed residents and visitors and promote environmentally sound economic development. The Neversink Reservoir is the only reservoir in Sullivan County that allows recreational boating, and the program was launched here in 2013. Boating on this body of water and any of the four that are open to recreational boating requires

more effort than simply parking your car and dropping a boat in the water. The strict guidelines have been established to keep the pristine waters clean and free from invasive plants, animals and other organisms that could harm water quality or the ecology of the reservoirs. Here’s how to get on the water: 1. Get a free DEP access permit. You an apply for a permit online at https://a826web01.nyc.gov/recpermitapp, or apply through a local steam cleaner. The online form allows you to print your permit before you venture out. 2. Need a boat? Rent one! Some local vendors keep boats at the reservoirs for easy access. The rental boats are steam cleaned ahead of time, which makes it easier for those who are coming from out of town or don’t own a boat. 3. Got a boat? Steam it! Get your boat steam cleaned and tagged at a local vendor. Choose a temporary tag (up to seven days) or a seasonal tag (through October). If you move your boat off the reservoir, it has to be cleaned and tagged again before you can bring it back or put it on a different reservoir. 4. Find a launch site. Find an approved launch site and get out on the water. For maps of the reservoirs and launch sties, more information about the recreational boating program, and other ways to access city-owned land, see the DEP’s watershed recreation page at nyc.gov/dep/recreation. You can also download reservoir-specific brochures at the Catskill Watershed Corporation’s tourism website, thecatskillregion.com.

Live the Wild Life

In search of the Goliath Grouper BY GUS CONGEMI

I

n 2014 I was on my way down to South Florida to hunt for hogs and gators and had the opportunity to fish for Goliath Grouper. During that trip, I took a day to go fishing for Tarpon and was asked if I wanted to go for the Goliath Grouper. I had no idea what I was in for. We made some attempts but had no luck. We would hook up, but weren’t able to land the fish. They live on and in structures, in about 100 feet of water. They can go up to 9 feet long, and up to 800 lbs. It’s like pulling a car off the bottom of the ocean. In 1990, the Goliath was listed as endangered but since then the numbers have rebounded dramatically. Heading back this year I wanted to attempt another item on my bucket list, to land a Goliath CONTINUED ON PAGE 84

Stream & Lake Map of New York

LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map-known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” It was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Professor Higbee painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto the map. It sold extremely well - until the printer declared bankruptcy and hauled Higbee’s work to the landfill. But reprints were impossible because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Higbee was even offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. Then, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Then the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.

Why every angler and boater needs this map

Professor Higbee’s® Stream & Lake Map of New York is the first and only highly detailed map of its kind. The 3.5-foot-by-4.5-foot New York map shows 65,000 miles of streams plus lakes.

The Goliath Grouper grows to upwards of 800 pounds.

Grouper with no assistance. One thing to understand is that there is no fighting chair, no pole holder; it’s just you, a rod and the fish. Then the tug of war begins. At dawn we went out to gather bait for these groupers. We bow fished for sting rays, keeping them in a holding tank and to give you an idea of the size of these fish, a whole sting ray is used as bait. These fish will usually take the bait and you want to get the fish coming towards the boat so they can’t wind themselves around structures and eventually snap the 400 lb. test line, so the drag is crucial. There is a fine line between keeping enough drag to fight the fish but not too tight causing you and the rod to go overboard. After several hook ups with no success, we were able to hook up. I fought for 20 minutes and I was able to land a 300 lb. Grouper, getting him up to the boat and releasing him. While this is something that I can now cross off my bucket list, it was so exciting and challenging that I will do it every time I go to Florida.
