Athletics helps our students in many ways

Our school-aged children – or young adults as the case may be – are settling back into the school routine and many sports and extracurricular activities are getting back in action. Looking at the many participants in Sullivan County’s eight school districts, we are very pleased with the turnout of the athletes and the many sports which are now being offered. If a student is looking at competing in sports it appears there should be a team or club that is right for them. The dedication of our students, coaches and especially our parents, who are responsible for rides, schedules and so much more, should be commended. And active support, be it going to

a game, checking in with an athlete, reading about it in the newspaper or volunteering to help on one of the booster clubs, shows our students that we applaud their efforts and want them to succeed. There are so many distractions in our world today which can derail a student’s success – both academically and athletically. From the many electronic devices which kids play with constantly to
injuries, health, homework, drugs and alcohol, students in today’s world can easily get off track. As the 2015 seasons progress, let’s try and give all our student-athletes a shout out for their commitment and support them in any way we can. Athletics is a very important part of many students’ high school experience and sometimes means the difference between keeping a kid in

school and having them drop out. So attend a game, reach out to your neighbor and ask about their kids’ accomplishments and don’t forget to give a coach a pat on the back. Some of our athletes will have collegiate careers in their given sport, but for most this is the last time you will see them compete. Let’s give them a great sendoff.

Members of the 2015 Fallsburg boys’ soccer team (front row, left to right) Luis Rivera, Kelvin Nunez, Luis Romero, Jonathan Lagos, Jason Gomez, Justin Mednick, Brando Castro, Cristian Cantoral, Cristian Hernandez; (back row, left to right) assistant coach Mike Geller, Albinas Varnas, Guillermo Orellana, Jose Rojas, Kevin Cerritos, Juver Argueta, Jefry Gonzalez, Ernesto Torres, Josh Hazelnis, head coach Darren Kenney.
Coach: Darren Kenney 2014 record: 13-3-2 Top returning players: Kelvin Nunez, Andres Tamayo, Guillermo Orellana, Cristian Hernandez, Luis Romero, Jose Rojas, Adam Justiniano Key losses: Rory Meyer, Matt Jonas Team strengths: We have a great group of players that have been playing soccer together for years, so they are definitely comfortable with each other on the field. We have numerous players who can score goals, so our attack should certainly be our main strength this year. Additionally, we have an experienced
senior who is a great central defender. Where to improve: Player leadership. Finding a vocal leader is going to be key to our success. We lost two valuable seniors last year that held those leadership roles, so finding someone to fill that void will be important. Season’s goals: We would certainly like to repeat as division champs and place ourselves in a good seed for the Section IX tournament. Reaching the sectional final is definitely on our mind, but we have to get our work ethic and energy to meet our skill potential to make that happen.
Key games - Sept 18 home against O'Neill. We had two intense games against them last season and they will be our top competition for the division title this year. Both matchups against Liberty. Liberty is our rival every year and the games are always well played and hard fought by both schools. Coach’s comment: “We have been trying to build consistency with our boys’ soccer program over the past couple years. We've seen some recent success lately, qualifying for sectionals the past four years, winning the division title last season, so we hope to continue to build
upon that. We have tremendous talent, but finding a way to live up to our potential and put it all together at the right time of the season will be our key. Mike Geller will be joining the boys’ varsity team this year as an assistant after coaching the girls’ varsity team for the past five years, so that will be a great addition to the team. He brings a wealth of soccer knowledge and experience, especially on the defensive side of the game, so this should equate to improved defensive play if the players continue to listen to coaching and buy into our defensive game plan.”

Johnson, Ryan Trask, Isiah Jackson Team strengths: We have a very good group of skill position players. We have good team chemistry. Where to improve: We need to improve in practice. We stress to our players how important it is to get better each week and every day. Team goals: Our goal is to get to the post season.
Key games: Obviously (defeating) Millbrook was a key game, but I think all of our league games are important. We always stress taking one game at a time and not looking past anyone. Coach’s comment: “Our season started out on a good note (with two wins against Millbrook and O’Neill) and from here we need to stay grounded and work as hard as we can and not get complacent.”
