The true holiday shopping experience

he holiday season traditionally and typically represents a critical period for retailers. But this year presents a much more unique challenge given the persistent influence of COVID-19 on consumer spending and shopping habits, as well as the importance of trying to recoup lost sales from the roller coaster of shutdowns and reopening guidelines. Fortunately, hidden within the COVID chaos is the silver lining: the true holiday shopping experience sought by consumers cannot be found solely online or in a big warehouse, but along the Main Streets throughout the U.S.; and Sullivan County boasts some of the best main streets for incredible holiday shopping experiences!

BY JAIME SCHMEISER PRESIDENT AND CEO SULLIVAN COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

As we all know, shopping local benefits our local economies, creates jobs in our communities, provides access to more unique gifts and provides more of a personal touch. However, this year, shopping local also means keeping your neighbor in business, helping their kids get dance lessons or a sports jersey and helping moms and dads put food on the table. Our Sullivan County businesses are careful in their shopping protocols to give you confidence in shopping safe and our Sullivan County businesses can provide you with that unique holiday shopping experience only found here in the Catskills. Shop Small. Shop Local. Shop Safe. Happy Holidays!

or over 70 years, Art’s For Him and Her Too in Honesdale has been a staple in town. They had seen many things throughout those years, and more so this year when most stores had to close due to the pandemic. He credits his loyal customers who have kept him in business all these years. “Personal service to our customers has always been and always will be the cornerstone of our success,” said Fasshauer. “We sincerely appreciate every customer and every dollar that’s spent in our business here,” he added. s there anything better than something soft and cozy for the holidays? Alpaca fiber is similar to sheep’s wool, but it has its own special properties—it’s very soft and warm, durable, fire and water resistant, lightweight and hypoallergenic. You can find alpaca gifts at two local businesses: Rosehaven Alpacas in Bethel and Buck Brook Alpacas in Roscoe. You’ll find everything from socks to scarves to sweaters at both of their shops. They have great gift items including toys, clothing, accessories, yarn and much more. Buck Brook Alpacas 12 Bestenheider Rd., Roscoe, NY 845-807-3104 www.buckbrookalpacas.com

ith the holiday season upon us, we at Catskill Animal Rescue are working harder than ever to find forever homes for our animals. The days are short, the air is cold and it’s hard to lock the doors and go home to our families knowing the dogs and cats are here without families of their own. For this reason, we have begun a feature on our Facebook page called “A Home for the Holidays. Every few days we put the spotlight on a different animal at

CARE. Through our interview format, readers can really get a feel for an animal’s personality, needs, and wants “in their own words. It is our hope these features catch the eye of interested adopters and our cats and dogs can go home for the holidays! Our Facebook page is Catskill Animal Rescue Inc.’s Sullivan County NY Lost & Found Pets. This group was started as a way for one person to locate her missing pet and has grown into a group with over 12,000 members. This group has been instrumen-

tal in many of our happy endings at CARE as well as helping countless lost pets reunite with their families. The holidays can be a great time to add a new furry friend to the family as people often have extra time to dedicate to helping a new pet acclimate, but there are some

things to consider before making the decision to get a new pet or give one as a gift. Recognize a pet is a commitment for that animal’s lifespan. Consider future financial concerns such as vet bills, food, beds, toys, and boarding costs. Research the breed you will be

a gift for the holidays. This can be successful if you make sure the recipient is willing and able to commit to the animal for the rest of its life. The last thing anyone wants is an influx of animals to shelters after the holidays because new owners did not understand the needs and workload of a new pet. As a rescue, CARE always encourages adoption. We have many wonderful animals that are waiting for a second chance. You can see our animals, learn about our processes and find our adoption application at www.catskillanimalrescue.net. You can reach us at (845) 747-9450 with any questions. bringing home and make sure you will be able to meet that breed’s needs. Some breeds are “high-energy” and need a lot of exercise to remain well-behaved. Some need a “job” to do or they become bored and destructive. Others require grooming on a regular schedule which can be expensive and time-consuming. Think about your lifestyle and which breed might be the best fit. As always, we encourage people to look beyond appearances and recognize the true nature of the animal. Also consider the age of the animal you will be buying or adopting. Puppies, while adorable, are an enormous amount of work. Adults and seniors are usually a bit less work as they are typically housebroken, are past the chewing phase, and have less energy. Many people like to give pets as
