Murph Toy Drive comes home

J

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM

osh Murphy, who was born and raised in Sullivan County, started the Murph Toy Drive in Manhattan, where it’s been held for the first three years of its existence. This year Murphy wanted to bring the drive home. “We are looking to make a difference in these kids’ lives, and make what may not have been a great Christmas, an amazing one,” Murphy said. “If we can change one kid’s life for the better, it’s all worth it.” This year’s drive benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Town of Wallkill (BGCW), which serves Northern Orange and Sullivan Counties. Murphy and Alexis Eggleton, former executive director for the BGC-W, have known each other for 20 years, and she has helped with the Murph Toy Drive from the beginning. “If it wasn’t for her, it [the toy drive] wouldn’t have come to fruition,” Mur-

phy said of Eggleton, who is now the Major Gift Officer at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. “No one has a bigger heart in the world than Josh Murphy,” Eggleton said. “To take a group of people who want to make kids’ holiday morning special, no one does it better than Josh. He rallies everyone we know to do this and it impacts hundreds of families.” Care to help in the effort and have a good time? An event to benefit the Fourth Annual Murph Toy Drive will take place at the Villa Roma on December 17 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. There will be a $35 open bar, including food, from 8-11 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Joey C., and the Villa Roma will offer a $99 special room rate. It is mandatory to bring an unwrapped toy, but there will also be a station to purchase toys at the venue in case people forget to bring

one. Purchasing tickets in advance at give.bgcorange.org/f/toys2016 is the only way to get entered into raffles at the event. You can also drop off toys for the

Murph Toy Drive at the Welsh Cabin Restaurant in Youngsville. Toys will go to the BCG-W’s Giving Tree program. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5G

Here’s one gift NOT to give this year

Help make the holiday season bright for needy children. The Town of Wallkill Boys & Girls Clubs is proud to support The Giving Tree, a project to put clothing and gifts in the hands of children in need across Northern Orange & Sullivan Counties.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST

Varying mixtures of pug and Australian shepherd, these puppies are nothing short of adorable! As cute as they are though, remember that adoption is a lifelong commitment.

November 14 through December 9, donors can sign up at any of our Giving Tree locations, take an ornament and return a gift for the child listed on their ornament. From December 12-21, we will collect, wrap the gifts and distribute them to Club kids and other children in need in our Counties.

GIVING TREE LOCATIONS

f you’re thinking about giving a pet as a present this holiday season, the Sullivan County SPCA asks you to reconsider. “It’s a living, breathing animal. It’s not a gift – it’s a lifetime commitment,” explains SPCA Manager Debbie Dittert. That cute little puppy, no matter how adorable, isn’t to be thrust upon an unsuspecting relative or friend. “It’s a family decision, and not one that should be made lightly,” Debbie says. “You don’t put a bow on a dog and stick it under the tree.” If that sounds harsh to you, consider that the SPCA gets at least three to four dogs and cats every Christmas season from people who either didn’t really want them or didn’t realize what they were getting into. Maybe someone had an allergy to that particular pet’s dander. Maybe

the mixture of kids and animals was too intense. Maybe the gift’s recipient was just as unprepared for the “surprise” as the gift itself. Maybe family and pet simply didn’t get along. So the SPCA ends up finding these dogs and cats at their door. And while they gladly take otherwise-unwanted animals, those “returns” add to the instability and anxiety of an innocent and sensitive creature. Debbie is adamant: it’s never a good idea to gift a pet, period. And she won’t approve any adoptions from the SPCA that are intended as such. “They [families] have to come here with their kids,” she says of applicants. “I insist on that.” That’s so animals and their familiesto-be get to know one another – and more importantly, that Debbie and her staff get to know the families to whom these lives will be entrusted.

Sullivan County SPCA Manager Debbie Dittert cuddles with Josh, a cute and friendly fivemonth-old kitten born at the SPCA’s Rock Hill shelter. Thirty other kittens also await homes.

Then swing by the SPCA’s facility at 104 Rock Hill Drive in Rock Hill. Hours are typically noon to 4 p.m. seven days a week, though you should call ahead (845-796-3120) to confirm. Help out the SPCA Not interested or ready for a pet? How about helping the SPCA in its mission to care for the most vulnerable creatures in our community? The hardworking staff could most use some volunteers to help with chores. Also of need are Purina-branded puppy, kitten, dog and cat food, plus inexpensive, non-clumping cat litter. Of course, monetary donations are always welcome and can be made through PayPal on the website or by mailing a check to the SPCA at 104 Rock Hill Drive, Rock Hill, NY 12775. Santa wants to meet them, too! One of the most fun things the SPCA does every year is invite people to bring their pets to meet Santa Claus. Have you and your beloved companion’s photo taken with jolly ‘ol St. Nick at the Rock Hill Firehouse on December 11 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.! The $15-per-photo price goes directly to the services the SPCA provides.

We wish we could send each and every one of you a gift, but nothing could compare to the gifts of friendship, loyalty and support we’ve received from you! To all my co-workers and the communities we serve, many thanks and best wishes for a beautiful and joyous holiday season from

the Vallone Family at

ROLLING V BUS CORP. To join this winning team, call

“It’s not a split-second decision,” she notes. Should you and your loved ones prove willing and able, however, the SPCA is eager to make your pet dreams a reality, sometimes in as little as a day or two. “I often adopt out two puppies at a time, usually siblings,” Debbie explains. This is a privately operated, no-kill shelter that depends on community donations and support. She’s not looking to deny anyone unwarrantedly – but she wants the match to be right and to be well-thought-out. “It costs $800 a year to take care of a dog,” she points out. An in-person visit to the shelter is thus required, and all cats and dogs must be spayed/neutered before they’re adopted out. But if you want a pet that’s right for you and your loved ones – someone who will become a cherished part of your family for many years – there’s no other way to go about it. And Debbie and crew really will be happy to assist! Visit sullivanspca.org or on Facebook for pictures of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats, plus info about the adoption process.

ob and Jen Eckert never planned to have a restaurant. The Roscoe couple bought property on Rockland Road not far from their home in 2015 with plans to open a shop where they could make and sell their popular pasta. But time after time, customers would drop into Northern Farmhouse Pasta, buy a few bags of fettuccine or pappardelle and say "we can't wait until you open your restaurant!" Already invested in the property, already making pasta on the premises, Bob says he asked Jen, "why don't we just try it?" They began "trying" it in the summer of 2015, serving a special menu each weekend on Friday and Saturday nights, and soon their weekends were so packed that they had to turn customers away. "It's great for business, but I hate doing it," Bob says of saying no to customers who didn't call ahead for a reservation. He sends those customers to the Arnold House, to the North Branch Inn, to other local restaurants that quite often serve Northern Farmhouse Pasta on their own menus.

local sources as they can. The cheeses in their raviolis come straight from Tonjes Dairy in Callicoon, the meats for their dinners from Hilly Acres in Jeffersonville, the various vegetables from growers who sell at the same farmers market where Bob first started making a name for the family business. "It's really about the farmers," he says. "That beef is not just beef. It's a farmer that raised that beef." The same could be said of his pasta. Northern Farmhouse generally has 15 varieties of dried pasta available, all prepared by hand. Although there are machines in the kitchen to help along the way, the pasta is still made the old fashioned way, dough cut and dried in a drying room. There's nothing old-fashioned about Northern Farmhouse's menu, on the other hand. "We will put pigs head on the menu! In a few weeks we will have veal testicles," he says. the Eckerts started as a means for Bob to get out of Manhattan and spend more time at home in Roscoe with his wife and children. Raised in Queens, he was best man at a wedding and got to talking with the maid of honor about fly fishing. That maid of honor was Jennifer, who told this stranger about her hometown – Trout Town, the birthplace of dry fly fishing. The couple has been married for 16 years and have two sons. Bob first set up a commercial kitchen in the family's two-car garage in 2011, making pasta on weekends, building high rises in the city during the week. By 2014, he'd resigned from his job in the city and come home to Roscoe full-time, thanks to a growing business. Northern Farmhouse Pasta is now

available in 60 stores throughout New York State alone and in eight states total, in addition to the restaurants that include the Eckerts' pasta on their menus. The company has begun offering opportunities for fundraisers to use their pasta, partnering with kids at the Roscoe school to sell the food to offer parents a healthy alternative to the steady rotation of junk food that often make up school fundraisers. And their pasta is available online at http://www.northernfarmhousepasta.com. But the best bet, Bob says, is to stop at the restaurant, 65 Rockland Road, Roscoe. You can have a meal (if you call ahead - 607-290-4064) on Friday or Saturday night, but the shop itself is open Friday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Former Youngsville resident’s first book is a perfect gift already. “My solution was to give Santa a helper. I thought an animal who’s intelligent, agile and strong could get the job done. Orangutans have those qualities. Plus, Oranga Claus is a funny name.” Fournier, who lives now in Florida, moved to Youngsville from Long Island when she was in fourth grade. She remembers childhood pets that included dogs, cats, parakeets, a horse, a chicken, a rabbit and a squirrel. “I also had a naughty goldfish I won at the Youngsville church bazaar,” Laura recalls. “He tried to run away from home by jumping out of his bowl.”

She attended the school in Youngsville until she completed sixth grade. “After that, students were sent to Jeffersonville. I graduated from JYCS in 1965. Last year some former classmates and I toured the old high school building that's now the elementary school. We were excited to see a photo of our graduating class still hanging in the hallway. We reminisced about rushing down the hill at lunchtime to eat at Ted’s restaurant. They had the best hot fudge sundaes!” The Boldin family first lived on Hardenberg Road and then later moved to Route 52 in Youngsville, to the home of her grandparents. “Their last name was Lingo,” she

ormer Youngsville resident Laura Boldin-Fournier likes laughing, learning, literature and animals. So her first book, published by Pelican Publishing and perfect for Christmas, is a humorous parody for children entitled “An Orangutan's Night Before Christmas.” “The idea came from a friend who’s also an animal lover,” Fournier explained. “After he told me he liked to give wrapped gifts to his dogs for the holidays, it inspired me to write a children’s picture book in which other animals receive presents.” She considered Santa Claus as a main character, but figured there are enough books written about him

Find that Signature gift Signatures Gift Shop occupies just a small, cozy nook of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance’s home on Main Street in charming downtown Narrowsburg, but it’s a nook full of wonderfully unique, handmade, often locally produced gifts for every age. Naturally, artwork is given prominence, including this breathtaking “Dunn Pond Early Spring” oil painting by Greg Pelly, surrounded by hanging gourds created by Devon Cameron of “Gourdaments.” On the other side of the shop are oil paintings of natural scenes by both Pelly and Richard Kreznar, each of whom live in the Delaware River Valley

region. Darlene Clark’s gorgeous Angelheart necklaces line the shelving beneath them. Nearby are beautiful examples of Pennsylvania-made folk instruments like the “gourd piano,” which comes with a 12-note songbook. There’s plenty more, from toys to clocks to books to sculpture – including the ongoing Valley Artists Holiday Show & Sale. Liberty Elks Christmas party delights hundreds of children STORY AND PHOTO BY SHARON SPACE-BAMBERGER

O

n December 3, Liberty Elks Lodge #1545 hosted their annual Christmas party for children. Thanks to a “Promise” grant from the Elks National Foundation (ENF) written by Tania De Frank, District Deputy and Grand Exalted Ruler, the 2016 party was huge! Over 250 children and their parents learned first hand that “Elks Share and Elks Care.” Prior to Santa’s arrival, guests were treated to a kid friendly lunch. When the sound of sleigh bells indicated Santa’s arrival a hush fell over the crowd. Santa

and Mrs. Claus (who resemble Elks Ernie Feasel and Maureen Crescitelli) held kids on their laps and told them to smile for the cameras. Children received a gift and parents received a framed photo of the special moment. De Frank was in awe of the Elks volunteers who helped make the party a success, “Thanks to them, our Elks lodge kept its promise of sharing and caring with the hundreds of needy children in our community.” Faye-Faye Brown of Liberty says she is “three-and-a-half, almost 4.” She showed Santa her new silver shoes with ‘kitty cat faces” on them. Santa admitted, “I like cats too!”
