Tai chi – the original martial art – has multiple health benefits STORY AND PHOTOS BY RICH KLEIN

D

onald E. Belsito Sr. wants people to know about the many health benefits of tai chi. He teaches at his Catskill Martial Arts Academy, which opened in 2003. “It [tai chi] was a martial art first and foremost,” he said, adding that the health benefits were secondary. “But today it’s strictly for health benefits.” That’s backed up by the fact that respected medical institutions, including the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School, have detailed information about tai chi on their websites. The form of tai chi practiced at his school is known as Tai Chi Chuan –

“ ... tai chi is a key reason the Chinese people live longer and healthier than Americans.” Yang 24 Style – created by the Chinese government in 1956. Belsito believes this is the easiest and quickest way to learn tai chi, which uses gentle flowing movements to improve health and reduce the stress of today's busy lifestyles. Belsito, who has black belts in multiple martial arts styles, started studying Tang Soo Do karate at age 4 in 1971 because his father and older siblings were already karate students. He hasn’t stopped since. PLEASE SEE TAI CHI, 5H

He took up tai chi later in life – on the repeated advice of his father – because his body was hurting from the many years of teaching karate. Belsito learned firsthand about the many health benefits he derives from what he calls the “mother martial art.” “First and foremost, it’s about stress management,” he said. “You learn how to decompress and be aware of your breathing. Everything starts with the breath. Tai chi works first on the respiratory system by increasing lung power and oxygen, but also helps the cardiovascular system. The more that we breathe, the more [we get] clean blood.” He added that tai chi also aids the lymphatic system. In addition to these benefits, Belsito said that practicing tai chi will increase muscle tone and flexibility. He also pointed out that tai chi walking, a specific exercise aimed at improving physical balance, has a

“We try to be as non-invasive as possible and prioritize treatment over medication. ... sometimes surgery is not the best option.”

S

ince 1984, the Pain Control Center in Liberty has specialized in interventional pain management, as well as minimally invasive and endoscopic spine procedures. Together their dedicated staff brings decades medical experience to bear against your most persistent pains. For Dr. Hussein Omar, MD, CEO and medical director of the Pain Control Center, patient satisfaction is his number one priority. “We’re a Joint Commission Accredited office based surgical facility, not a pain pill mill,” explained Joanne Omar, Dr. Omar’s office administrator and CFO. “We prioritize treatment over medication.” Dr. Omar specializes in interventional pain management with extended expertise in minimally invasive and endoscopic spine procedures treating back and neck

pain. He’s a board certified anesthesiologist and is known for giving his patients relief without major surgery. In addition to his many years of experience, Dr. Omar is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and International Pain Society.

According to Joanne Omar, there’s still much we don’t understand about back and spinal pain. “More than 90 percent of our patients come to us after a failed back surgery,” said Joanne. “Everyone wants a quick fix to their pain and sometimes surgery is not the best option. It’s amazing what simple physical therapy, trigger point injections, etc. can achieve for people.” Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Ghanam is also a board certified anesthesiologist and a fellowship-trained pain management specialist in New York City. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures, as well as surgical procedures such as spinal implantable devices. Along with Certified Physician Assistant Vince LaSalle, Dr. Abu and Dr. Omar are your pain control dream team. “Only a person that experiences going through their life in constant pain can understand how incredibly

Rolling V driver Corey McAbier wins NYSBCA ‘Rookie of the Year’ award SOUTH FALLSBURG – Rolling V Bus Corp., a Catskill Region-based school bus transportation company, announced one of its new drivers, Corey McAbier, earned the “Rookie of the Year award from the New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA). The NYSBCA’s 46th Annual New York State School Bus Safety Competition was held at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage in May, with more than 100 drivers taking part. McAbier not only won the Rookie of the Year award, honoring the best new driver at the competition, but also took first place in the category of Conventional Bus (Type C). “The event was a lot of fun, and it was an honor to be able to take home

a couple of awards for Rolling V, said McAbier. “Watching all of the drivers who were present, it was evident just how many great bus drivers there are in New York State and how safe kids are in their hands every single day. The awards are great, but knowing there is that level of safety and care from all of us drivers is comforting. McAbier, 26, lives in Neversink. He has worked with Rolling V since March 2016 and currently is a driver for Tri-Valley Central School District out of Rolling V’s Neversink Terminal. Corey went through the company’s commercial driver license program and received his license in February 2016. He is also a volunteer firefighter in Neversink. PLEASE SEE WINNER, PAGE 15H

old weather is behind us and our hands have emerged from their mittens into a world with hazards. During the summer, the emergency room typically sees an increase in traumatic hand and finger injuries. And it’s not surprising that the surge comes as yard work begins, since lawnmowers are a common cause of hand injuries. To ensure you cut your lawn and nothing else, taking a few simple precautions can help. Always wear gloves as a first line of defense when operating a mower or other trimming tools. Keep your hands away from blades and the chute at all times. If your mower is clogged, use extreme caution when cleaning it out. Never

obstruction is cleared, the blades may unexpectedly turn and cause serious bodily damage. Grilling is another culprit. We see slicing injuries not just from basic food prep – which is a year-round issue – but from people using knives improperly. Should you suffer a hand injury this summer, it is important to treat the wound properly and know when to go to the emergency room. First, rinse any bleeding wound, then clean it with mild soap and water, or some diluted peroxide and water, and cover it with something clean and prefer-

ably lint-free. For cuts or impact injuries, apply ice. Have someone transport you to a nearby emergency department if : • If your finger or wrist looks crooked or twisted, this usually indicates a broken bone; • If you have a deep, open wound that reveals bone, tendons or anything white colored within the hand; • If you have a cut that results in pulsatile (throbbing) bleeding; • If you’ve suffered any sort of amputation or partial amputation of a finger, or you have a fingertip that is turning blue or purplish.

Middletown Medical opens first 24-hour Urgent Care in region MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Medical, the Hudson Valley's premier provider of healthcare services, has opened the first 24-hour urgent care center in the region, located at 111 Maltese Drive in Middletown. Patients can now receive immediate care for non-emergency illness and injuries without an appointment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Medical practitioners are always available to treat all patients, from infants to seniors, without the long wait time or high out-of-pocket costs that are typically associated with emergency rooms. “This is a big step forward for the region’s residents, who have had to either go to the emergency room for non-emergency care during the overnight hours or wait until the morning, said Melissa Wolff, the medical group’s Marketing Director and Physician Recruiter. “Our 24hour service allows patients the con-

venience of faster care for non-lifethreatening injuries or illnesses at a lower cost. Wolff continued, “In fact, depending on the patient’s co-pay and level of treatment, the average cost of an emergency room visit is $1,233, while an urgent care visit costs between $50 and $150. Middletown Medical’s urgent care accepts most insurance plans and is proud to offer worry-free pricing for self-pay patients without health insurance. Although life-threatening injuries and conditions still need to be treated at the hospital, the 24-hour urgent care offers relief from common issues such as broken bones, minor fevers, asthma, stomach pain, rashes, minor burns, removal of stitches, and allergic reactions. MIDDLETOWN – Crystal Run Healthcare primary care physician and Choosing Wisely champion, Eric W. Barbanel, MD, was recently invited by Consumer Reports to be a judge in their Choosing Wisely Patient Champions Program. The recently launched program is a nationwide search that recruits and recognizes patient champions as everyday people who actively encourage conversations between patients and their providers, with the critical goal of ensuring everyone’s care is as safe as possible. Dr. Barbanel identified patients that have displayed and used the Choosing Wisely principles who will be extensively trained by Consumer Reports. These patients will join a team of activists to promote the concepts of “talking with your doctor” to their respective communities over the next year, in an effort to improve uptake of value based care from the patient perspective. In addition, patient champions will spread
