onald E. Belsito Sr. wants people to know about the many health benefits of tai chi. He teaches at his Catskill Martial Arts Academy, which opened in 2003. “It [tai chi] was a martial art first and foremost,” he said, adding that the health benefits were secondary. “But today it’s strictly for health benefits.” That’s backed up by the fact that respected medical institutions, including the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School, have detailed information about tai chi on their websites. The form of tai chi practiced at his school is known as Tai Chi Chuan –

“ ... tai chi is a key reason the Chinese people live longer and healthier than Americans.” Yang 24 Style – created by the Chinese government in 1956. Belsito believes this is the easiest and quickest way to learn tai chi, which uses gentle flowing movements to improve health and reduce the stress of today's busy lifestyles. Belsito, who has black belts in multiple martial arts styles, started studying Tang Soo Do karate at age 4 in 1971 because his father and older siblings were already karate students. He took up tai chi later in life – on the repeated advice of his father – because his body was hurting from the many years of teaching karate. Belsito learned firsthand about the many health benefits he derives from what he calls the “mother martial art.” “First and foremost, it’s about stress management,” he said. “You learn how to decompress and be aware of your breathing. Everything starts with the breath. Tai chi works first on the respiratory system by increasing lung power and oxygen, but also helps the cardiovascular system. The more that we breathe, the more [we get] clean blood.” He added that tai chi also aids the lymphatic system. In addition to these benefits, Belsito said that practicing tai chi will increase muscle tone and flexibility. He also pointed out that tai chi walking, a specific exercise aimed at improving physical balance, has a

Liberty Fitness Center celebrates 15 years The “SilverSneakers Classes,” which bring senior citizens and adults over 50 together for light aerobic exercises, has become a smash hit.

he Liberty Fitness Center marks its 15th year in business during 2017, improving the health and wellness of local residents. Cindy Fracasse started teaching several aerobics classes at the Liberty Fitness Center in 1996 when Adam and Hank Ramirez owned it. Before that the building was owned by Alan Gerry and used for his general appliance sales and repair business. “This building has good karma,” said Fracasse. She threw her heart and soul into it, working mornings and nights, teaching at least 11 classes a week. One morning in 2002, Fracasse walked into work to find Adam on the floor repairing an old elliptical machine. “I wish I could sell this place,” he said in frustration. That’s the moment Fracasse could hear opportunity knocking. “Could it be me?” she thought to herself at the time. “Could I be an owner? Could I make money doing something that I love to do?” The answer was yes. Adam gave her

senior citizens to exceed their own physical expectations. “Alicia is such a huge asset to the Liberty Fitness Center,” said Fracasse. “She brings such musicality and energy to the class which her clients really respond to.” Ballroom, Swing and Latin dance lessons are taught by the legendary Jackie Horner – the inspiration behind Dirty Dancing, as well as assisted by George Stang and Pam Bossert. Another instrumental member of Fracasse’s staff is Keenya JonesBrown, who teaches Zumba classes and personal training when she’s not working as a home care assistant at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. There are many other instructors and trainers on site for you to meet. The 15 years she’s been in business is something to celebrate, but it’s by no means the end. “Our story is still being written,” said Fracasse. Rolling V driver Corey McAbier wins NYSBCA â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Rookie of the Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; award SOUTH FALLSBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Rolling V Bus Corp., a Catskill Region-based school bus transportation company, announced one of its new drivers, Corey McAbier, earned the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rookie of the Yearâ&#x20AC;? award from the New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA). The NYSBCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 46th Annual New York State School Bus Safety Competition was held at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage in May, with more than 100 drivers taking part. McAbier not only won the Rookie of the Year award, honoring the best new driver at the competition, but also took first place in the category of Conventional Bus (Type C). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The event was a lot of fun, and it was an honor to be able to take home

a couple of awards for Rolling V,â&#x20AC;? said McAbier. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Watching all of the drivers who were present, it was evident just how many great bus drivers there are in New York State and how safe kids are in their hands every single day. The awards are great, but knowing there is that level of safety and care from all of us drivers is comforting.â&#x20AC;? McAbier, 26, lives in Neversink. All of the drivers at the event competed in a specific school bus division, including Type A (smaller vans) and Type C and D (larger conventional buses). The event began with a thorough written exam on school bus safety topics, and continued throughout the day with practical skills tests including vehicle inspections, loading and unloading students, proceeding through railroad crossings, driving the bus through specially designed driving courses and more. All of the winners in each category are now eligible to compete in a competition hosted by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) on July 15 and 16, the International School Bus Safety Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana. First, rinse any bleeding wound, then clean it with mild soap and water, or some diluted peroxide and water, and cover it with something clean and prefer-

Have someone transport you to a nearby emergency department if : • If your finger or wrist looks crooked or twisted, this usually indicates a broken bone; • If you have a deep, open wound that reveals bone, tendons or anything white colored within the hand; • If you have a cut that results in pulsatile (throbbing) bleeding; • If you’ve suffered any sort of amputation or partial amputation of a finger, or you have a fingertip that is turning blue or purplish.

HUDSON VALLEY — Maternal-Infant Services Network (MiSN) is a not-forprofit organization serving the MidHudson Region that is dedicated to family, as well as community health and wellness. MiSN serves pregnant women and women of childbearing age, parents of infants and young children, schools concerned with pregnant and parenting teens, as well as health and human services providers. They also help individuals, families, and small businesses interested in finding affordable health insurance. Some of the services that they provide to the Mid-Hudson Region include youth health and wellness programs, health insurance navigator programs, perinatal and women’s health and wellness programs, as well as participating in community health coalitions. The youth health and wellness programs provide an education to assist in

Middletown Medical expands with new orthopedic surgeon MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Medical has announced the addition of Dr. Mikhail Itingen, board certified orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Itingen is providing service to adult and pediatric patients in Middletown Medical’s Liberty Medical Group at 111 Sullivan Avenue in Liberty and at 35 Maltese Drive in Middletown. Dr. Itingen treats all general orthopedic problems; he also specializes in foot and ankle problems, sports injuries, arthroscopic ankle surgery, bunion and forefoot reconstruction, and Achilles tendon disorders. In addition, he treats children, including all trauma and lower extremity disorders like intoeing, torsion, flat feet, and birth defects.

Prior to joining Middletown Medical, Dr. Itingen treated patients in Peninsula Hospital Center and the Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Itingen completed his fellowship in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital, where he was able to assist in treating professional athletes and dancers. “We are very excited that Dr. Itingen has joined our team of orthopedic surgeons,” said Melissa Wolff, the medical group’s Marketing Director and Physician Recruiter. “His patients are raving about him. We are pleased to continue our expansion with the most highly qualified and experienced doctors and nurses in the region.”

Dr. Itingen earned his Doctorate from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at Old Westbury, where he was one of the top students in his class, and was admitted to the prestigious Psi Sigma Alpha society for his scholastic excellence. Prior to that he earned his Bachelor of Science in health sciences from Long Island University, where he was on the Dean’s list and graduated with honors. Dr. Itingen is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and has conducted clinical research studies on Achilles tendon disorders and bunion deformities.

Barbanel, MD, was recently invited by Consumer Reports to be a judge in their Choosing Wisely Patient Champions Program. The recently launched program is a nationwide search that recruits and recognizes patient champions as everyday people who actively encourage conversations between patients and their providers, with the critical goal of ensuring everyone’s care is as safe as possible.
