n 1879, Thomas A. Edison applied for a patent for the electric light bulb. That year also saw the very first Grahamsville Little World’s Fair. Coincidentally, the 138th Little World’s Fair, which happens this year on August 18-20, will have a newlyinstalled lighting system in its livestock building. The Little World’s Fair, operated by the Neversink Agricultural Society, Inc., has announced some new attractions for 2017. One is a vintage garden tractor parade for owners of antique and other older model garden tractors. Billed as “The Garden Tractor Pull, it will be held at noon on Sunday, August 20, and there will also be an awards ceremony recognizing the best garden tractors later that day. The Little World’s Fair will also formally recognize the 40th anniversary of the Chestnut Creek Covered Bridge, which provides one of the

entrances into the fairgrounds. A lobbying effort by Neversink resident Robert Drown was instrumental in the commemoration. Magnetic photos of the bridge will also be available to commemorate the anniversary. As always, the Little World’s Fair will feature agricultural and livestock exhibits and contests, daily entertainment including live music and demonstrations, rides for all ages, food, games and vendors. Two events that made their debuts last year are back: a watermelon-eating contest and a tug-of-war competition. Cathy Bender, President of the Neversink Agricultural Society, said that in 2016, there were approximately 8,000 to 9,000 attendees over the three-day Fair period, adding that it will cost nearly $100,000 to operate this year’s event. Bender noted that the Neversink Agricultural Society leases its grounds to the Town of Neversink for 50 weeks of the year for a wide variety

of community events. The Town then has the right to lease the space to individuals and businesses for private events like weddings and other parties and celebrations. Other events held on the grounds include the Daniel Pierce Library’s Giant Pumpkin Party and the Neversink Rondout Antique Machinery Association Annual Antique Tractor Show & Swap Meet. According to Bender, the Society is also teaming up with Cornell Cooperative Extension to apply for an infrastructure improvement grant from New York State Agriculture and Mar-
kets, which promotes Fairground health and safety. Safety is always on the minds of ride operators and participants. Colin O’Keefe, owner of Shamrock Shows and Amusements in Milton, NY, said his company will operate about 16 rides this year in Grahamsville along with 10 to 12 games. He cited a trade association report that said 96 percent of ride accidents are caused by riders who don’t follow safety rules. That’s one reason O’Keefe has an entire webpage devoted to “Rider Safety Tips for Riders and Parents” at shamrockshowsandamusements.com.

He said he’s happy to return as the ride vendor after a brief hiatus; Shamrock managed all the rides at The Little World’s Fair for 19 consecutive years until 2013. Asked about safety of his rides in the aftermath of the tragic accident in Ohio, O’Keefe asserted that the New York State Department of Labor does

vigorous inspections of all their rides to compliment his company’s own daily inspections. And, he said, New York’s inspectors are well trained and among the best in the country. But he was clearly upset for all involved in the Ohio tragedy and said he knew the ride operators from their recent shared event in Saratoga. Mark McLewin, co-owner of the Neversink General Store, said that during the 2016 Little World’s Fair, the store “ran out of everything” by Saturday afternoon. “We knew then we were in trouble.” McLewin, who took ownership of the store in late 2015, says he’s now better prepared for the onslaught and notes that he gets busier starting two to three days before the Fair – with many advance workers at the Fair ordering food and drinks. “One year gives you much better perspective (on planning ahead),” McLewin said. He also relayed a funny story from 2016 in which his ATM machine ran out of all its $20 bills, so he went to the Fair and asked to trade in some cash. “We look forward to that Fair every year,” McLewin said. “I make sure that I set aside time to go play for a few hours, too. It’s a nice family event.”

usiness owner and community leader Phil Vallone will be honored with the Sullivan County Partnership’s Walter A. Rhulen Award during its 22nd Annual Meeting October 6 in Rock Hill. “W We are delighted to recognize the Vallones’ contributions to our region, said Marc Baez, President of the Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development. “Every time the Partnership or Chamber asks for anything, Phil and (partner and spouse) Donna are always there, said Baez of the Brooklyn and Queens-born duo whom in their youth spent summers on opposite mountains near Roscoe where they met. The Rhulen Award, presented annually, recognizes lifetime achievement by an individual for business excellence, community commitment and service to humanity. Investment and expansion of the Vallones’ flagship company in the region, Rolling V Bus Corp., and their willingness to take risks on new ventures, are “traits Walter (Rhulen) stood for, said Baez. For more than 50 years Rolling V Bus Corp. has provided regional school bus services, charter coach and taxi transportation services. Of decades of achievements, Phil Vallone still takes most pride in “getting kids to and from school safely. Some 4,500 school children, in fact, throughout Sullivan and Ulster County. “The Valloness have bee en n here awhile, and have made a differen nce, esspec cially in Roscoe, said Baez.
