Pat Murtagh STORY AND PHOTO BY MARGARET BRUETSCH
Age: 61 Hometown: Bethel Place of Employment: Self-employed, Pat Murtagh Construction LLC Current Title and Duties: I’m a member of the limited liability cor-
poration. My duties are, well, I’m the estimator, and I’m the accounts payable guy. You know we’re a small business company. Right now I have two full-time employees. One of them has been with me many years. So I have to take care of everything. I’m the secretary, I’m the estimator, I’m the billing agent and I pound nails as well.
MARCH, 2017
Years of Experience: You know, really all my life. I started off in the painting business, and I gradually got into construction. We do everything. We average building a new home a year, sometimes two a year. We also do decks, and renovations and restorations. Previous Employment: I think you’d have to go back to 1980. I worked for OSU Realty in Orange County. I worked for myself my whole adult life. Favorite Part of Job: Working with the people. We go to a spot where there’s nothing there, it’s a vacant piece of land. We’re involved with site preparation, putting the driveways in, getting the well drilled, the septic system in and then all of a sudden you build a brand new house. The development is a cool process. And working with people. We’ve been fortunate to work with some really, really nice folks. What I’ve found is that if you do what you say you’re going to do, for the money that you say you’re going to do it for, and the time you say you’re going to do it in, people are really happy. They’re pleased. I haven’t been cheated out of money in this business since 1981. I’ve made some concessions once in a while. I mean whatever the situation is where you take some money off of the charge, but I haven’t been outright cheated. And I think that’s based on the fact that you tell people what you’re going to do for the price you’re going to do it for, and then you bring it in during a time frame. I’ve always found that people are happy to write you the last check. Most Challenging Part of Job: Just bring it to finish. Bringing it all together. Favorite On-The-Job Moment: A couple years ago we built a guest house for a NY attorney. He’s known around the area as kind of a no-humor type of guy. He has that air about him and we built this guest house for his daughter over by the Beechwoods area, and when we finished and we were outside of his house, he welled up with tears.
SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT
He was getting emotional about the whole process and the finished product of a guest house for his daughter. Education: I graduated from Roscoe Central School Class of ’74. I went to Delhi College for about a year and a half, but no Associate’s degree. Favorite Movie: Any John Wayne movie that co-stars Victor McLaughlin. Favorite Actor/Actress: I like Gene Hackman, and Reese Witherspoon.
How do you Spend Your Spare Time: Golfing. I’m a former winner of the Sullivan County Democrat Tournament 1998. The one year it was held at Tennanah Lake. I play golf five days a week. Favorite Vacation Spot: Ireland. I guess the Ring of Kerry, and Kinsale. My wife and I traveled around a bit, and there wasn’t any place in Ireland we were disappointed in. Family: Parents are both deceased. They actually came out of Brooklyn and bought a farm in

Bethel. I was born on the farm but we left there about a year later and moved to Roscoe. I’ve got three older brothers, I’m the youngest of four. I’m married to Karen Schaub Murtagh. She works for the Post Office. She’s the postmistress of Mongaup Valley. We have no children. We got married late in life, and weren’t blessed with children. Civic/Volunteer Affiliations: I don’t do much volunteering. Favorite Quote: "Buy American. Hire American."

Age: 51 Hometown: Niskayuna, NY Place of employment: SUNY Sullivan Current title: Interim President Years of experience: I have more than 25 years’ experience in higher ed.; I have been at SUNY Sullivan since July 2016. Previous employment: Most recently I was Assistant Secretary for Higher Ed., Office of NY State Governor Andrew Cuomo. Before that, I worked at SUNY System Administration in the role of Assistant Vice Chancellor and Assistant Provost for Community College Policy and Planning. Favorite part of your job: My favorite part of this job – any job I have had, really – is the opportunity to work around really intelligent, dedicated people. It is the people who I get to work with and serve that
make the job worth doing. Most challenging part of the job: Ensuring that all stakeholders’ needs are met, while keeping an eye on the financial bottom line. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: I taught and was the advisor for a student with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. He really didn’t expect to finish college, but graduated and transferred to Siena College, ultimately earning a Business degree. And he saved over $60,000 by starting at a community college! Education: Here’s where things get tricky. I didn’t graduate from high school. I earned an equivalency and went to college at New Mexico State and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Rhetoric. Of course, these two sentences don’t tell anywhere near the whole story. Stop by the college if you want the long version … Favorite movie: Too many to list.
How do you spend your spare time: Cooking for family and friends, reading, listening to music and cycling. Favorite vacation spot: Tulum, Mexico and Sonoma, CA, and many others. Family: Heather and I have been married for nearly 28 years. We have two fantastic daughters: Hannah, who lives with her husband, Adam in Buffalo, NY, and Kate, who is in the process of moving from Sydney, Australia to Montreal, Canada. Civic or volunteer affiliations: Being new to the area, I have yet to join any of the great efforts around the county. In the past, I have served as President of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Board in Schenectady, the Town of Niskayuna Planning Board and Zoning Commission and on the Schenectady Public Access TV Board. Favorite quote: Honestly, I don’t really have favorites. I’m afraid I’d stop listening if I got focused on one voice.

as the Health & Safety Coordinator for one year. I also have seventeen years of Code Enforcement experience. Previous employment/title: City of Newburgh / Code Enforcement Officer Favorite part of your job: The sense of satisfaction I feel when students and staff can work and learn in a safer and healthier environment as a result of my actions. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: In the short time I have been at Sullivan BOCES, I have had the pleasure of working with a number of great individuals and have had many rewarding experiences. My favorite on-the- job experience here at BOCES was the first safety training I provided for new hires. This was a new experience for me, and I did not want to make it a painfully boring experience for the participants. During my preparation for the training I understood that the participants may not find the material particularly exciting, so I incorporated real life examples to make it more relatable. The real life examples caught the attention of the audience, sparking conversations and discussion about the topics they were there to learn. This experience taught me the importance of effective training in efforts to develop safe work habits within an organization. Education (high school, college): I graduated from Marlboro High School / Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Marist College. Professional certification: NYS Certified Code Enforcement Official, NYS Certified Asbestos Inspector / Management Planner.
