‘Go outside and get your hands dirty!’ Guest speaker Kirk Brown is a man of the earth – and the theater By Matt Shortall

K

irk Ryan Brown, vice president of the Garden Writers Association, will be the guest speaker at the Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference on Saturday, March 7 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Brown hopes his presentation, “Community Landscape: Art and Practice,” will inspire people to go outside and “get their hands dirty.” “Community greening” is integral toward unifying people around environmental sustainability. “My desire is to get as many people as possible to jump on the bandwagon,” he said. “‘Each one, teach one’ – that’s my philosophy.” Based out of Orefield, Pennsylvania, Brown travels the country educating people about the historical roots of American horticulture and its transformative power in our modern lives. His book, “Landscape Contractor” is distributed to high school guidance programs throughout the US and Canada. An actor and playwright, Brown often puts on a wig and costume and gives lectures and tours as historical characters John Bartram (an early American botanist) and Frederick Law Olmstead (landscape architect and designer of Central Park in NYC). Those forerunners’ names are part of the websites Brown maintains. Recipient of the Pennsylvania Nursery and Landscape Association’s (PNLA) “Green Achiever” award for advancing horticulture in the state, Brown also serves as business manager for Joanne Kostecky Garden Design, Inc. According to Brown, in today’s technology driven world, it’s easy to feel cut off and separate from nature. Fortunately, the solution is as simple as going outside and planting a flower. An ongoing study at the University of Copenhagen suggests that gardening produces many of the same benefits as meditation, helping to reduce stress and promote general well-being. “Opposable thumbs aren’t just for using smart phones,” said Brown. “The people who put their hands to the earth know how rewarding an experience it can be.” So Brown continues to proselytize for the cause of horticulture, to “each one, teach one.” The more we do that, Brown believes, we’ll not only transform our lives but also the world around us.

Contributed Photos

Kirk Brown works in his garden at his home in Orefield, Pa., above, and at left, gives one of his numerous lectures to

horticultural associations and community groups.

He has tried to draft his family and friends into his gardening philosophy. “Sometimes you have to physically drag them out,” said Brown. “There’s usually kicking and screaming, and sometimes there might even be blood, but in the end they’re always grateful.” The Brown File The graduate of Cornell University has an arms-length list of horticultural associations and memberships: • American Nursery and Landscape Association • Garden Writers Association • Perennial Plant Association • Association of Professional Landscape Designers

• Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association • Pennsylvania Horticultural Society • American Horticultural Society Gardens that he has designed and installed have been presented with “Outstanding Design Awards” by PNLA, Perennial Plant Association, and Association of Professional Landscape Designers. He has done keynote addresses for a wide circle of associations, including the American Nursery and Landscape Association Management Clinic, the Florida Landscape and Nursery Growers Association and the Smithsonian Institution. He has spoken to numerous garden clubs, high school guidance programs, regional nursery associations, churches, and service clubs. For Asbury United Methodist Church, he has written over 25 produced original dramas, comedies, and musicals with a number of collaborators over the last 35 years. Several of his Christian musicals have been published and achieved a national audience for a variety of productions. As an actor and playwright, Kirk has produced, directed, and designed over 100 productions. He has served on the board of Directors at Civic Theatre in Allentown, founded ACTS (Asbury Chancel Theatre Society) where he has produced an original drama or musical every one of the last 25 years. He resides in Orefield with his wife, Sara; two sons, Logan and Evan; and two cats, Nicco and Ponch.

HELP US HELP YOU!

Join with Sullivan Renaissance volunteers and become part of Sullivan County’s renaissance

F

or 15 years now, Sullivan Renaissance has challenged, encouraged and supported the efforts of grassroots volunteers to improve their streets, neighborhoods, villages, and towns. We have helped to increase public awareness… the bar has been raised. The response has been overwhelming. Thousands of people have donated literally hundreds of thousands of hours of their time and expended almost nine million dollars in beautification and community revitalization [See chart on page 15S]. All of this has been contributed for the public good. The result is telling. Every community can now point to beautiful spaces, public gardens and parks, and renovated buildings. Not only does Sullivan County look better, it also feels better and is more welcoming to visitors. We have our volunteers to thank. But now, it is time to double our efforts… there is still much work to be done and we need help with the heavy lifting. Unlike any time in its recent history, Sullivan County is in a unique position. A series of projects have begun that will move the county

forward economically, culturally and environmentally: Empire Resorts Inc., The Center for Discovery, SUNY Sullivan, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Catskill Regional Medical Center, and Catskill Mountainkeeper. Representatives of these organizations will describe how their initiatives are catalysts for the continued transformation of Sullivan County as part of a panel discussion at the Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference held on Saturday, March 7 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. In addition to the panelists, there are many additional projects moving Sullivan County ahead. These include renewed development at the Apollo Mall in Monticello, a health spa at the former Kutshers Resort, a private school academy at the Delaware Valley School in Hankins, and a community center at the old Narrowsburg School. There are many more examples of people and groups stepping forward to make a major difference in our county. Sullivan Renaissance and our volunteers need substantial help with bigger projects. There are many major eyesores still to be removed. We

need help from those who are in a unique position to step forward in substantial ways to take this renaissance beyond the level that volunteers are able to accomplish on their own. Perhaps our public officials, major businesses, institutions, main street landlords, seasonal communities, homeowners, landowners, and investors coming into the county, could help with the removal of abandoned signs, identify and resolve eyesores dotting major roadways, help with asbestos removal on derelict buildings so they could be removed, donate the use of heavy equipment for an hour or two to local renaissance groups, and address dumpster use to disguise their visibility from the road, as just a few examples of help with heavy lifting. We need everyone… all of the stakeholders… to work together to pull back the blight, that we may reveal and protect the underlying beauty of the county. Please join with us today to make it happen!

Sincerely,
