hen you ask Corey Dirie how to explain the Callicoon Tractor Parade to people who've never heard of a tractor parade, the teenager looks perplexed for a few moments. Then a grin breaks out over his face. "Tell 'em to get country!" he says. Dirie will be Grand Marshal of this year's parade, tasked with leading hundreds of tractors around Callicoon on CONTINUED ON PAGE 4C

the second Sunday in June for the 21st annual event. At 13, the Hortonville teen has only missed one parade – the year his sister was born in late May. Since he was a toddler, he's spent most of the parades as a passenger, starting on the lap of Bill Eschenberg, helping to steer his John Deere. "He's always been obsessed with tractors – ever since he was a little boy," mom Tonya Dirie says. It started with Eschenberg's tractor, and birthday requests quickly became tractorcentric, John Deere green tractor centric, that is. He began attending tractor pulls with his uncle Jay Dirie, and later got a small tractor of his own, then another when the first one ceased to function. It's his Simplicity riding mower, a gift from his grandfather, that Corey rides around Hortonville with friend

In 2011, Corey was just 7, and proud to be driving in the parade!

and cousin James McElroy on weekends and nights after school. Corey likes to spend his days in the fields, the muddier the better, his engine roaring. It's that Simplicity that he'll be driving to the parade. The Sullivan West eighth grader is already taking his duties as driver of the first tractor seriously, mapping out his day for maximum tractor time. It will all begin by 7 a.m., he says, when he and McElroy plan to leave home and head toward Callicoon. "We're going to the car wash to get our tractors clean," Dirie says. They may stop in at the Callicoon fireman's breakfast at the firehouse after that, but then it's off to the Youth Center, a big cooler filled with soda and food to sustain them until the kickoff – right at noon sharp. After that? Well, if the chicken barbecue back behind the Youth Center, catered this year by Mr. Willy's, doesn't keep them too long, it will be back to the field for some serious tractor riding ... of course.

Note to Tractors – registration opens at 7am at the DYC. There is no fee to enter the parade, but the DYC appreciates any donation big or small that you can make to help offset the cost of putting this wonderful event on. Couple important notes:

• No parking at AGWAY please. • You should arrive at the DYC early to drop off your tractor and register. • Trailers and other vehicles will be directed elsewhere in town to park. • If you are only bringing your tractor, you can enter the line up at the DYC and just drive the tractor in the parade when it starts. • Volunteers will be on hand along the route to assist. We appreciate your full cooperation in abiding by their directions. • Please, NO children on laps or fenders. This is just too dangerous. • NO alcohol, and absolutely no drinking and driving. Police will be on hand to patrol, so be smart and be careful! • NO pulling tractors – you will be asked to prove the tractor can run and that the brakes work. • NO political signs or advertisements. The parade is for fun and not for political or commercial gain. • And most importantly, HAVE FUN!

RESORT AMENITIES INCLUDE: • Restaurant & Night Club • Olympic Size Outdoor Pool • Game Room

• Hiking, Bicycle & ATV Trails • Minutes away from fishing &rafting • 16 miles from Bethel Woods

John Lyttle, enjoys having guest drivers help him during the tractor parade.

Indeed, John is typically joined by dozens, if not hundreds, of tractors of all shapes and vintages (and the same can be said for their drivers). But his Farmall isn’t just a showpiece. John mows his yard with it, hauls logs out of the woods with it, even boasts it can be used to generate external power through its belt drive. “I use it as my hedgehog and grader,” he nods. “I really beat the thing up, but they’re just great machines – they’re indestructible!” His affection is so deep, in fact, that he hopes to buy another one. In the meantime, he looks forward to motoring down Callicoon’s main drag June 11 and sharing one of his favorite quips: “What did the plow say to the tractor? “Pull me closer, John dear ...” (Think about it – you’ll get it!)

hether you hear a “putt, putt, putt, a “blurble, blurble, blurble, or a “shoosh, shoosh, shoosh as they lumber past, tractors make an indelible impression on us all. But how did these delightfully noisy machines come into being? According to a variety of sources, the predecessors of tractors were portable steam engines used for farm equipment in the early 1800s. But it wasn’t until 1892 that the first gasoline-powered tractor came along – fittingly enough, in Iowa, where John Froelich fitted a onecylinder engine to a steam-powered thresher. Its bare metal wheels could transport it up to three miles an hour, though it was really meant to operate in a stationary fashion.

So it was a two-cylinder engine built by Charles Hart and Charles Parr in the early 20th century that brought about the tractor revolution. Indeed, their 14,000-pound #3 tractor resides inside the Smithsonian! Four-wheel tractors debuted in 1908, but it was Henry Ford’s lightweight, mass-produced Fordson that caught on with farmers, eventually dominating the American market in the 1920s. Thereafter, Ford, John Deere, Massey-Ferguson, Case and more became household names in farms across the country, and they’ve become adept at everything from tilling to harvesting to mowing to ... well, just putt-putting down Main Street in Callicoon!
