GOOD LUCK ATHLETES TO ALL OUR ATHL
No matter what‌ stay positive

efore tackling the importance of a positive attitude in sports, let’s first congratulate all of the fall teams for kicking off the 2016-17 high school sports campaign. A fall season which included teams tackling the challenges of moving up a class, winning their first sectional title in over 20 years or their first sectional title period. It should be an exciting winter season. In indoor track, our athletes are already shattering records and establishing new personal bests. The hardwood is heating up as our county’s boys and girls basketball teams are honing their skills more and more each day. Our skiers are getting ready to compete, as the mountains are filling up with snow, and our wrestlers are set to grapple the competition as league matches are right around the corner. With that said, an important lesson in sports is how every season will not always yield a result which reaches our expectations. Sometimes if a team is young, inexperienced or suffering from a plethora of injuries, they will struggle or need time to grow. Many schools in our county have a small pool of athletes at their disposal. So when a team is young, inexperienced or dealing with injuries and they are playing against more experienced schools, the result is not usu-

ally ideal. And here is the reality, sometimes a young and growing team is going to lose...alot. While losing isn’t fun, it is important to not let it destroy your confidence or your work ethic. However, in order for a program to grow, almost more important than talent is the attitude which a team decides to adopt. When facing a large deficit or a season with several losses, it is important to never quit working hard. Future hall-of-famer Derek Jeter once said, “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. Sports are supposed to be fun. They are called games for a reason. And while these games are more fun when we win, as in life, you rarely win all the time. So our challenge to all Sullivan County athletes this winter season, whether you are undefeated or winless, is to never stop giving maximum effort and always embrace the challenges associated with getting better. Also, keep putting in those hours of hard work to improve your craft, and always do it with a smile on your face. Good luck and we look forward to attending your games and documenting your growth as athletes and as people! Coach: David Binkowski 2015-16 record: 10-12 Key losses to graduation: Noah Clemmons, David Powers, Andrew Halloran, Dylan Wolff. Key returning players: Erek Binkowski, Jake Mckean, Joseph Santoro. Team strengths: Size and shooting Where to improve: Defense and taking care of the basketball. Season's goals: Show improvement every week and repeat as Section IX Champions. Key games: With Seward dropping down to a D this year, our league games are more crucial than ever if we want to get back to the title game. Playing Class A and B teams will only make us better, but as the defending Section IX Champs we are committed to defending our crown. Coach's comment: First and foremost we have a great group of kids on this team. We lost a lot of experience due to graduation, but I'm confident the boys are going to give me
everything they have and work to make up for it.

majority of our rebounding, scoring, and defense. We need our returning players to step up and fill the void. Our goal is to improve each day and qualify for sectionals at the end of the season.” For 2016 Sullivan County Democrat Coach of the Year, Ryan Jasper, and his squad, this year’s 2-2 (0-1 OCIAA) start has been complicated by Seward dropping down to Class D to challenge Eldred and Roscoe for the Section IX title. The recent league loss to Seward pointed to a lot of work that needs to be done. After a holiday tournament that will pit Eldred against Class A Goshen and then against either Seward or Fallsburg, Eldred hopes to get on track for a run at their fourth straight Section IX title. Eldred has been to the Final Four twice in the past three years. Jasper believes the team strength is, “Returning five players with varsity experience, and notes they have to improve on “playing cohesively as a team.”

That will certainly be the case for Eldred coming off of last year’s uplifting 19-4 campaign that took them to the state semifinals before losing to Heuvelton. Winning Section IX for the third straight time and then overcoming Milford in the quarterfinals, Eldred rode the outstanding play of nowgraduated starters Kelsey Collins and Sheila Burns, along with current veterans Jordan Lepes, Kassandra Weatherly, Alaina Gaughan, Sami Clemmons and Hannah Jennings. The Yellowjackets will also get contributions from Hailee Kolvenbach, Mickaela Gulla, Jessica LaBuda and Morgan Kopf. Eldred Coach Ryan Jasper noted that Collins, Sheila Burns and Jenna Burns were key losses. “We lost our three leaders from last year, two of which were starters,” Jasper said. “They provided the

We will be exciting to watch and pretty good on the offensive end of the court. I would like for us to be feisty on the defensive end of the court and get stops when we need to. I couldn't be more excited about this year’s version of the Lady Comets basketball team. The sky is the limit.

Goodson and Donovan Williams were key losses to graduation, as the trio combined for over 80 percent of the team’s scoring last season. This January, league clashes with Goshen, Port Jervis and Cornwall will be crucial for the Panthers who will rely on the inside play of Liberty transfer Shawn’e Eagan and senior standout Sam Stanford to man the paint while they hope to get major production from Jaquan PoolePorter, Alberto Florez, Dominince Brownridge, Josh Gattling, Deontae Smith, and newcomer Kevin LeBron. The Monties are bolstered by Shykell Hilliard, Tyron Walker, Jeremy Schuck, Dameion Need and Tron Snowden. “We are a small group, but quick and athletic,” Russo said. “These players have a ‘we not me’ mentality

and work hard every single day. I never question their effort or dedication to our program.” “We have to get better defensively,” Russo added. “Our size puts us at a disadvantage so team rebounding is a must.” On this season’s goals, Russo said, “Our goal every year is to be the hardest working team out there, improve everyday, and compete for a championship. If we give a winning effort every time we step on the floor (practice, scrimmages, games) then the winning takes care of itself.” Key games for the Panthers include all league matchups as well as two benefit tournaments – Third Annual Slam Dunk Heart Disease Games (January 14) and the Ninth Annual Sullivan County BCANY vs Cancer Classic (February 3-4) – which fea-
tures several local schools. “We are going to take advantage of our quickness and athleticism,” Russo said. “We will be playing fast and try to put pressure on the other team to adjust to our style of play. I think we will become a good defensive team as we commit more to that end of the floor. “I am really excited about coaching this team - we have a good mix of returning and new players. Coach Strenkopf has done a great job getting the JV kids prepared for the varsity level. “The guys have really bought into our theme of ‘unbreakable’ – a bundle of sticks is so much stronger than a single stick on its own. We reinforce that idea with a lot of positive talk and actions. The guys are really coming together and it is great to see.”

STORY AND PHOTO BY RICHARD A. ROSS trio of early season losses to Warwick, Valley Central and Wallenpaupack had the Panthers itching for a win which they got in the Lake Region Classic Consolation Tourney over Lackawanna Trail. They built on that with dynamic wins over Seward and Minisink Valley to capture this year’s Jingle Ball Classic title. But a rough non-league loss to neighboring Fallsburg dropped the Panthers below .500 again. Last year they were 8-13 (3-3 OCIAA) atop their division and made sectionals despite posting an overall sub .500 record, before losing in the first round to Poughkeepsie. Monticello Coach Chris Russo noted that Kyle McCreery, Terrell

Roscoe/LM girls bring their communities together
STORY AND PHOTO BY ALEX RAU o strangers to sports mergers, the Livingston Manor and Roscoe schools have once again merged their girls varsity basketball program for the 2016-2017 season. While Roscoe hosts the sport with nine players of their own, Livingston Manor rounds out the roster with two athletes in Mara Marshall LeRoy and Lindsey Rau. Sophomore Taylor Roseo is out for the season due to injury. “We are extremely excited to be bringing two schools together in the best interest of our athletes,” Roscoe/LM Coach Becky Ahart said. “I am enjoying working with this group of young ladies and looking forward to playing each opponent on our schedule. It’s been great to see the bonds and friendships being made between these girls both on and off the court” said Roscoe/LM Coach Becky Ahart. “It really does bring together both communities and it’s great to see the success.” Ahart was also part of an earlier 2010-2011 girls basketball merger between Livingston Manor and Roscoe having co-coached with Manor’s coach Kevin Clifford, and later coached a combined Roscoe/ Downsville team in the 2013-2014 season. “We’ll do whatever it takes to give the girls the opportunity to play and enjoy the sport,” added Ahart. Coach Ahart has seen an overall improvement in her team’s performance this season. “No doubt we are stronger this season, and we’ll only be losing one senior this year so I’m excited to be working with these girls now,” Ahart said. As for the future, the two schools have also merged their modified girls basketball program which consists of two teams and is hosted in Livingston Manor. Ahart noted key losses to graduation include Alyssa Diaz, Lucy Kunz, Karissa Newkirk and Ceili Horton. Last season, Roscoe had a 3-16 overall record. With some stiff competition in Seward (now class D) and Eldred, the

Key games: Tri Valley (They are a ‘C’ school like us). Coach’s comment: I want my players to work hard every day in practice. Give 100 percent effort and try to improve their skills. We need to work as a team and play for each other in order to be successful on the court.

Lady Bears look to improve each day STORY AND PHOTO BY ED TOWNSEND
J
ohn Tenbus, Tri-Valley's new varsity girls varsity basketball coach, has had several weeks of team practice. When asked what he looks forward to in the 2016-17 season, Tenbus noted that, “With just two teams in our division (Class C), the games against Sullivan West are important. We will approach them though like any other game. We are going to try to work hard and value each possession. We can't turn the ball over. We must each focus on our role and perform that role to the best of our ability. We want to reach sectionals every year, but in order to do so, we must keep improving.” “After numerous practices and two scrimmages we are starting to put it together,” Tenbus added. “We have definitely improved since day one, but we are not where we need to be yet and that's ok. Each day we'll work to get bet-
ter and hopefully be playing our best basketball towards the end of the season. “As far as the style of ball we hope to play, it will depend what personnel I have in the game. We could go with a bigger, taller lineup or a quicker, smaller lineup. This will depend on the opponents and in-game situations.” Last year’s team record was 11-10, and Tenbus notes that key losses to graduation include Liz Hannold, Kayla Butler and Autumn Bender. This year’s captains will be Morgan Shamro and Jaclyn Musa, "Though these can change daily depending on certain circumstances," Coach Tenbus said. “We are a hard working team, that has little experience,” Tenbus said. “Our goal is to improve each day we practice and try to peak at the right time of the year. We hope to make sectionals and be playing our best at that time. This team will not give up no matter what adversity they face.”

Coach's comment: We are a young team this year, with only three returning juniors from last season, giving us only three seniors who have been in the program before. This year’s team is the tallest team that I have had the opportunity to coach, with six players over six-feet tall. We are still working on figuring out our team’s identity this season, but we hope to be very competitive throughout all of our section IX play.
