The songs here are deceptively charming, with lush, airy arrangements that belie their dark, weighty lyrics. The production is rich and multifaceted to match, blending retro and futuristic palettes into a spellbinding swirl of high-def indie rock and lo-fi bedroom pop. As its title suggests, Host is an exploration of the sinister dynamics at play in a parasitic relationship, but rather than dwell in the discomfort, the record charts a cathartic journey towards freedom and self-reliance, reveling in the power that comes from standing your ground and declaring independence in the face of exploitation and manipulation. Formed while Follin and Oblivion were still just students in college, Cults first emerged in 2010 with their breakout single, “Go Outside,” which the New York Times hailed as “one of the indie rock highlights” of the year. Both a commercial and critical smash, the track would go on to rack up more than 40 million streams on Spotify, land in soundtracks everywhere from Broad City to Gossip Girl, and help the band score a major label deal for their self-titled debut, released the following year on Columbia Records. The duo followed it up with the similarly celebrated Static in 2013, and they returned in peak form four years later with Offering, building up a devoted audience along the way through relentless headline touring and festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Coachella, Austin City Limits, and more.

FENNE LILY BREACH About the album
Details
Isolation is nothing new for Fenne Lily – in fact, she’s written an album of songs all about it. “It’s kind of like writing a letter, and leaving it in a book that you know you’ll get out when you’re sad – like a message to yourself in the future,” she says, referring to BREACH, her Dead Oceans debut she wrote during a period of self-enforced isolation pre-COVID. It’s an expansive, diaristic, frequently sardonic record that deals with the mess and the catharsis of entering your 20s and finding peace while being alone. “I think this record is proof that I can be emotionally stable, even if right now I feel a little bit up and down,” says Fenne. “There’s the ability to find clarity in that.

the picturesque English countryside. She was a “free range kid,” as she calls it, after her parents took her out of school for a period at the age of seven. Over the following year, they taught her while the family travelled Europe in a live-in bus. Even after she returned to traditional school at 9, her home education never ended, extending to

music. Her mother gifted Fenne with her old record collection, through which she discovered her love for T-Rex and the Velvet Underground and Nico. Soon after she fell for the strange genius of PJ Harvey and came to worship Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and the richly crafted worlds of Feist, which inspired Fenne to pick up a guitar. It’s that journey to find peace inside herself that underpins the whole of Fenne’s second album. Its title, BREACH, occurred to Fenne after deep conversations with her mum about her birth, during which she was breech, or upside down in the womb. The slippery double-sidedness of the word – which, spelled with an “A”, means to “break through” – drew her in. “That feels like what I was doing in this record; I was breaking through a wall that I built for myself, keeping myself safe, and dealing with the downside of feeling lonely and alone. I realized that I am comfortable in myself, and I don’t need to fixate on relationships to make myself feel like I have something to talk about. I felt like I broke through a mental barrier in that respect.” Even though it also carries implications of awkwardness, rebellion, and breakage, it’s a widereaching word, representing new beginnings and birth.

ABOUT THE LP
RELEASE DETAILS
Conceived in the 1980s in Mexico and brought to California through the border inside of his 6-month-pregnant mother, Rudy de Anda’s debut solo record is a love letter to the long historical lineage of rock ’n roll music as interpreted through his multicultural lens. “I write my own story, I don’t want to be defined by any scene” de Anda proclaims of his personal journey, and his ability to adapt and flit between cities and cultures is part of why L.A. Record has called his sound “deliberately difficult to classify, familiar but novel at the same time.”

ANJIMILE GIVER TAKER TRACK LISTING SIDE A 1. Your Tree 2. Baby No More 3. In Your Eyes 4. 1978 5. Not Another Word SIDE B 6. Maker 7. Ndimakukonda 8. Giver Taker 9. To Meet You ere
About Giver Taker On Giver Taker, the gorgeous debut album by Anjimile, death and life are always entwined, wrapping around each other in a dance of reverence, reciprocity, and, ultimately, rebirth. Giver Taker is confident, intentional and introspective. Anjimile Chithambo (they/them, he/him) wrote much of the album while in treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, as well as while in the process of living more fully as a nonbinary trans person. Loss hovers over the album, whose songs grieve for lost friends (“Giver Taker”) and family members (“1978”) along with lost selves (“Maker,” “Baby No More,” “In Your Eyes.”) But here, grief yields an opening: a chance for new growth. “A lot of the album was written when I was literally in the process of improving my mental health, so there’s a lot of hopefulness and wonder at the fact that I was able to survive,” says Chithambo. “Not only survive but restart my life and work towards becoming the person I was meant to be.” Each song on the album is its own micro-journey, adding up to a transformative epic cycle created in collaboration with bandmate Justine Bowe of Photocomfort and New-York based artist/producer Gabe Goodman. “1978” and “Maker” both begin as Su an Stevens-esque pastoral ballads with Chithambo’s mesmerizing voice foregrounded against minimal instrumentation and swell into the realm of the majestic through the addition of warm, steady instrumentation (informed by the mix of 80’s pop and African music Chithambo’s Malawi-born parents played around the house) and harmonies by Bowe. “In Your Eyes” starts out hushed and builds to a crescendo via a mighty chorus inspired by none other than e Lion King. e allusion is fitting: each song encapsulates a heroic voyage, walked alone until accompanied by kindred souls. e choirs present throughout are equally deliberate. Chithambo grew up as a choir boy himself, and several songs (notably “Maker”) grasp not only towards reconciliation between his trans identity and his parents’ strong religious beliefs, but towards reclaiming his trans identity as an essential part of his own spirituality. (“[Less] Judeo-Christian, more ‘Colors of the Wind.’”) ere is a boldness to this borrowing and shaping, a resoluteness that results from passing through hardship and emerging brighter, steadier. As a closing refrain on “To Meet You ere” might sum it up: “Catalyst light of mine / now is your time.” Giver Taker was recorded in Brooklyn, Boston, and New Hampshire by Goodman, thanks in part to the Live Arts Boston Grant by the Boston Foundation. @fatherdaughterrecs

El Ten Eleven Tautology Overview Experiencing an unexpected tragedy or loss often provokes a period of self-reflection, a time to contemplate one’s own place and purpose in the world. That was true for El Ten Eleven’s Kristian Dunn. When a beloved family member passed, Dunn found his own reflections on life emerging in the music he composed. Those expressions led to the creation of Tautology — a sonic meditation on the arc of human life, composed in three parts. Over the course of three discs, Tautology is, in Dunn’s words, “a representation of life from the teenage years, through middle-age, until the end of life.” The sounds on the album echo Dunn’s own experiences, veering from aggressive metallic riffs to blissful ambient soundscapes. And while there are shared melodies and harmonies through all three records, each one has its own distinct qualities: Tautology I, which represents adolescence, is angsty, aggressive and occasionally depressive; Tautology II is head-noddy and mid-tempo, and represents middle age; while Tautology III, quiet and ambient, represents one’s golden years. Tautology is not a typical rock album, and El Ten Eleven are not a typical rock band. For seventeen years the instrumental duo of Dunn (bass/guitar) and Tim Fogarty (drums) have flourished outside the accepted norms of rock orthodoxy, releasing eight full length albums and four EPs, and performing over 750 live shows. Utilizing inventive arrangements and a masterful use of looping, El Ten Eleven create a sound much bigger than the sum of its parts. Joyful Noise Recordings will digitally release each of Tautology’s three discs, individually and in sequential order, beginning May 1st, with a physical 3xLP release on September 18, 2020. Dunn explains there’s no right or wrong way to listen to Tautology, suggesting that a deep dive into the full project will yield rewards. “I think someone could listen to any one of the discs by themselves and have a really great experience—even if they didn't know about the others. But if they do want to go deeper, I think there will be a lot of interesting stuff to discover. It works symbolically and it all connects. I think this is the best record we've ever done.”

Arca &&&&& PRESS RELEASE
DETAILS
For anyone who can remember, Arca’s &&&&& was a moment. Its 25-minute stretch of coiling, contorted grime and glitch; dub and hip hop dropped with the buzz of an impending co-production credit on Kanye West’s Yeezus in 2013. Released with no warning seven years ago, &&&&& became a bridge between Alejandra Ghersi’s time partying and collaborating with her queer peers, while still living in New York to the next stage of her career releasing on Mute in London. She’d go from making beats for rapper Mykki Blanco and fashion label Hood By Air, posting lurching bass reworkings of pop hits on YouTube, and producing her first fluid mixtapes with DIS Magazine, to finishing off this seminal mixtape on the synths in Daniel Miller’s studio. After dropping three impressive EPs the year before, &&&&& marked a transition. Continuations and extrapolations of material from Stretch 1 and Stretch 2 appeared in the mangled RnB sampling of “Century” and Arca’s signature vocal layering in the pitched flow of “Waste”. Along with the fluttering, muted heartbeat of “Obelisk”, and the lumbering piano chords of “Mother”, fourteen sonic sketches were elegantly woven together into a single, downloadable whole. As Alejandra’s course turned toward moving to Europe from the United States, &&&&& became a remarkable challenge to the form of the mixtape, which was a relatively new trend taking hold of the online-oriented underground at the turn of the 2010s. But where many, if not most mixtapes where treated simply as a showcase of individual tracks presaging a more ‘official’ release to come, &&&&& was a complete piece in its own right. “I wanted to make something that was my best work,” Alejandra says about a record that has stood the test of time, “I listen to it very fondly today.” The release is fully remastered by Enyang Urbiks, with artwork by Jesse Kanda, and etched vinyl Exclusively distrubuted by SECRETLY DISRIBUTION PHONE: 8123351572 US SALES CONTACT: domestic@secretlydistrubution.com

ABOUT THE ALBUM It is hard to imagine a more timely album than ‘mydata,’ the fourth solo release from the Melbourne-based pop artist Katie Dey. Her unique sound, which blends noisy synths with artpop poetics, has felt ahead of the curve, but in this moment of quarantine-strained relationships and touch-starved isolation, ‘mydata’ feels even more prescient than ever. “It’s pretty explicitly about an internet relationship, which can be precisely as meaningful as a relationship that’s physical,” Dey says. “Because a long distance relationship is obviously physical too, in a sense. It’s physically felt in the body.” Dey’s signature sound, which has been grounded in the digital since her 2015 debut ‘asdfasdf,’ is perfect to capture this CATALOG NUMBER: RFC213 tension between absence and presence--or perhaps between RELEASE DATE: September 18, 2020 different kinds of absences and presences. With ‘mydata’ FORMAT: LP though, Dey develops the sound that drew her acclaim in some new directions, contrasting her reverb- and glitch-filled LP BOX LOT: 40 synths with clearer, brighter sounds. Nowhere is this new GENRE: Alternative / Electronic / Pop focus on blending and contrasting sounds clearer than in her KEY MARKETS: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, vocals, which break through the layers of sound in a way all Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin together new for Dey.
TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: US & Canada “As I get older and my ideas of how I want to present myself Only morph and evolve, I want more clarity in myself,” she says. “I VINYL NOT RETURNABLE want to be heard and understood, and I want to convey a self that isn’t misinterpreted as much.” It all works to underscore the album’s focus on data loss, translation, distance, and tentative connection. When noise crumbles around her full and unafraid vocals, she feels at home in the buzzing networks that deliver us to each other. And when crisp electronic strings emerge from the mess, Dey’s voice instead insists on the honesty of distortion. These are songs that understand that love is the thing that happens when something starts to break just the right way, like a favorite hair tie stretched a little too far. “If I could be a lightbulb,” Dey lilts on the album’s metamorphical opener, “I’d explode the moment you install it.”

ABOUT THE 45
RELEASE DETAILS
Ten years ago, Ikebe Shakedown began pushing the boundaries of instrumental music. Each new track and live set has sent them deeper into combining the primal elements of ’70s soul, raw psychedelic style, and cinematic Western soundtracks with powerful grooves and soaring melodies. Now, with their new release, the band is giving listeners more mystery and majesty than ever before. These tracks were recorded by Ikebe's bassist, Vince Chiarito, at Hive Mind Recording. Opened with Ikebe's saxophonist, Mike Buckley, and another collaborator in 2017, Hive Mind has become a home base for the band, leading to more experimentation with the textures and sounds of a genre they define as Instrumental Soul.

LIAM BAILEY WHITE LIGHT b/w COLD & CLEAR Liam Bailey comes out swinging with “White Light,” an instant-classic, dancefloor filler. The rough and tough drum break intro catches you from the first beat before the track gives way to an infectious and uplifting reggae-disco number. Liam’s instantly recognizable voice showers his muse with praise over deep round bass lines and a four on the floor beat. The combination of Leon Michels’ crushing production and Bailey’s lyrics like “You love yourself, you’re so exciting, like no one else”… is sure to make this a staple in dj sets around the globe.

The B side “Cold & Clear” is a proper lighters in the air, slap the wall, top ranking tune. The track struts in the door with a natural and undeniable confidence. Liam weaves a heavy metacognitive story over the one drop drums, perfect basslines, and organ stabs that will have people stepping in rhythm. The lo-fi production weaves elements from the finest early rocksteady era with touches from the late 70s / early 80s digital era and takes the entire vibe into the present with unorthodox arrangements and vocal treatments. Bailey has a tune here that will hold up next to the classics in the dancehalls from the yards of Jamaica to the discotheques in his homeland of England.

Sufjan Stevens, The Ascension CATALOG / AKR150 RELEASE DATE / September 25, 2020 DESCRIPTION / The Ascension, the eighth studio album from singer, songwriter and composer Sufjan Stevens, is a salient collection of fifteen pop songs that, with sweeping editorial aplomb, interrogate the integrity and sustainability of our human existence. The album seeks to confront the psychic trauma of our current apocalyptic condition by highlighting the disparity between survival and despair - while trying to maintain a path towards truth and light. QUOTES / “Equally extraordinary and powerful, Stevens’s new song is a 12-minute-plus masterpiece” The Sunday Times ‘Hottest Tracks’ “‘America ‘is “a 12-minute triumph” Clash “No one calls a song ‘America,’ and extends it past 12 minutes, without serious intent. Sufjan Stevens previews the Sept. 25 release of his eighth album, ‘The Ascension,’ with the slow, steady, four-chord march of “America.” Its pace is inexorable; its refrain is ‘Don’t do to me what you did to America.’ Instruments, voices and programming all have a part in the track, and a two-minute postscript — that’s a long time — is entirely about resonance and reassurance.” New York Times SELLING POINTS / • AKR150LP-C1 first-run edition includes tip-on gatefold jacket and clear vinyl. • AKR150CASS includes gold-colored cassette. SURFER BLOOD – Carefree Theatre Surfer Blood’s Carefree Theatre, out September 25th 2020 on Kanine Records, is their fifth studio album. The Carefree Theater in West Palm Beach, FL was the only real venue in town for most of John Paul Pitts childhood. It was where he would go for anything from shows to theatrical productions. It was just the kind of exposure that showed him there was a whole world outside of Florida, the kind of experience that would inform a twenty-one year old student to drop out of school and start a band. He did just that. Surfer Blood’s rise was remarkable – and just recently recounted in detail with the 10 year anniversary of their debut and breakout album Astro Coast. A decade ago. That’s a long time. Where a lot can happen.

It is universally agreed that New Zealand’s Wax Chattels are a mustsee live act; their hypnotically sinister debut captured this perfectly. Released in 2018 and supported by relentless touring, the eponymous album reached #7 on the New Zealand Album Charts, and release week saw the title feature as #1 in Rough Trade’s Top 20 New Releases. Tastemakers like NPR and A.V. Club came on as early champions. The album’s success at home and abroad led to the well-deserved nomination of Best Alternative Artist at the 2018 New Zealand Music Awards, as well as the band’s inclusion in the coveted shortlist of finalists for the Taite Music Prize and Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award. After a knock-out entrée, the anticipation that surrounds their sophomore album, Clot, is immense. 7. Span n e rs & Imple me nts 8. An Eye 9. Forever Marred 10. Yokoh ama 11. You Were Right

Much like their debut, the writing process for Clot took the best part of a year. While some songs were written on the road, the bulk of the album was workshopped throughout 2019 across bedrooms and storage containers. Demos were fine-tuned before recording engineer James Goldsmith (Aldous Harding, Mermaidens) stepped in. The band maintained the use of only the barest of ingredients — bass guitar, keyboard, and a two-piece drum kit — but spent more time experimenting with and finding new sounds. They wanted to maintain the same live element, but, this time, heavier — for which they enlisted the help of mixing engineer, and fellow noise-maker, Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Destruction Unit, The Men). The keyboards are thicker, the bass more intense. A marked step-up, this new record keeps the visceral energy of the debut, only this time they dig deeper into cathartic noise. At Clot’s center is confrontation. “Mindfulness” asks do you accept the status quo over forcing tangible change? The vitriolic choruses of “Cede” are in Cheng’s native language — Taiwanese Hokkien — and are an indignant confrontation about Cross-Strait relations and selfdetermination. The experience of being a first generation immigrant is expressed in the melodic single “No Ties”. The song touches on cultural differences and the parental sacrifice of careers and support systems to provide a “better” future for their children. The explosive arc of “Efficiency” describes knowing when to bide your time, and when to push, in which the band treads a line between the explicit and intuitive. This is carried through “An Eye”, in which the band stresses the physical harm and psychological breakdown emanating from the escalating racial and political uproar throughout the world. Though the band seethes and boils throughout, Clot concludes with a message of hope. Perhaps it’s this capacity for self-awareness that makes Wax Chattels one of New Zealand’s most treasured independent exports.

Since debuting his Khotin project in 2014, Edmonton’s Dylan Khotin-Foote has fine-tuned an impressionistic, dream-like style of music that straddles multiple sonic worlds. His output often sways from gentle synthesized atmospherics to hypnotic, dance-minded frameworks. His self-released 2018 LP, Beautiful You, offered a study on melody and memory; the album’s nostalgia-nudging use of passing environments, voices, and abstractions captivated a cult following, a rare 4.5 review in Resident Advisor and the attention of Ghostly International, who pressed the cassette on vinyl for wider circulation in 2019. Now, Khotin reveals his first collection of new material since the signing. The album is a fluid continuation of his blissful and melancholic songcraft, extended humbly and warmly, Finds You Well.
Catalog Number: GI-371 Format: LP, Cassette Release Date: September 25th, 2020 Genre: Electronic, ambient Box Lot: LP-10 Vinyl is not returnable.
As tongue-in-cheek as the title may appear, the phrase has haunted the producer for some time. Most often seen at the start of correspondence, the words “I hope this email finds you well” can land with varying levels of sincerity, depending on context and mood. Khotin-Foote started to read the line more ominously during the onset of the pandemic. So, this set of music winks at both possibilities, mixing a platitude’s opaque optimism with lurking uncertainty. Finds You Well can be heard in near-symmetrical halves: its 10 tracks represent the selections from a bounty of demos that, with less modesty, could have filled two records, one active and the other ambient. The resulting set isn’t an even split but it’s close. The A-side centers on the album’s steadiest sequence of beat-centric material. “Ivory Tower” is inextricably tied to benchmarks set by late ‘90s downtempo forerunners, spilling lucious and narcotic synth modulations across a sprinkler’s spray of breakbeats. Khotin’s sprightly melodic noodling brings that touchstone sound into vogue, bubbling up in free-form spurts. The sequence continues through the propulsive “Heavyball,” into “Groove 32,” which begins with a funky bit-clipped drum and bongo boogie. A tight bass-line plugs into place, building a grid for square-wave pads, shimmering melodic textures, and stuttering vocal samples to percolate in. Khotin’s tone stabilizes on the B-side, balancing decidedly bucolic terrain with suspiciously eerie melancholy. Voices wander in the sprawling frequency sweeps. Organic textures sizzle and sputter in the clouds. “WEM Lagoon Jump” references local West Edmonton folklore, the time a kid jumped from a shopping mall’s second-floor balcony into the main pavilion’s fountain. After the splash, we land in the record’s most satisfying stasis, “Your Favorite Building.” A brittle clave and muffled kick hover in a wobbly mist of organ chords; the building is gorgeous, but seen at night, and empty, and from this angle, those shadows seem to crop up more of those subdued tremors, those nostalgic creeps, those droll musings. From behind a wall of melody, a kid peeks their head and softly sings, “you must love the world because it’s wonderful,” the vocal snippet comes courtesy of Khotin-Foote’s sister, Amaris. For much of Finds You Well’s second half, Khotin dabbles in a dusty and slightly detuned piano sound, revealing an artist unafraid to change shapes but maintain course. This set of chimeric visions sidesteps the subdued bombast that fills the A-side; instead, it suggests a counterpoint emphasizing the uncanny overlap between well wishes and empty promises.

Death Bells New Signs of Life ABOUT THE ALBUM After swapping hemispheres, Australian outfit Death Bells have found a new home in Los Angeles, emerging with a new album of fervent guitar-driven rock, stripped of gloom and punching through with a new sense of positivity. New Signs of Life, their debut for Dais Records, finds Death Bells using a DIY pedigree to plunder the conventions of “rock music” with a saxophone along for the mission. Rather than leaping genres or formats, New Signs of Life is refined and nuanced—a methodology built on process, craft, and perspective. Following their 2017 debut, Standing at the Edge of the World, and follow-up single “Echoes,” Death Bells left their hometown of Sydney for the United States. Energized by impulse, extensive touring and exploration led to the formation of an ambitious six-piece band that eventually coalesced as a collaboration between founding members Will Canning and Remy Veselis. With Canning and Veselis becoming the engine, Death Bells began to employ several underground mainstay musicians to complete their live presentation, including Cortland Gibson (Dock Hellis), Colin Knight (Object of Affection), and on occasion Brian Vega (Fearing). Revitalized and centered, Death Bells released the single “Around the Bend” in 2019, before workshopping material that would eventually comprise their second full-length effort. As much as Standing at the Edge of the World was an energized disclosure informed by fresh naivete, New Signs of Life harnesses those initial sparks, cloaking the threads of Death Bells with authority, allowing each of the nine tracks which embody New Signs of Life to become lush streamlined vehicles. The eponymous lead single is a grandiose statement, influenced by the theme song of HBO’s classic television program Six Feet Under. The lyrics are a shopping list of personal neuroses butted against self-help clichés, dressed with jagged guitars, brass, and percussion providing a deliberate pace for Death Bell’s new chapter. As method gives way to melody, New Signs of Life exudes an urgent hope laced with drive and verve. The first track for New Signs of Life, “Heavenly Bodies,” signals Death Bells’ pointblank delivery of a laconic truth: “We all vanish, anyway.” Somber and cool, it eases into hushed staccato hypnosis while still finding the tenets of guitar-driven rock. ”A Different Kind of Happy” and “Alison” push the edge of convention, speaking to the power of love in a world gone mad. A nod to their homeland and new city’s surf heritage, “Shot Down (Falling)” pivots playful to a sun-soaked beach strum, layered with shimmer before the horizon fades. As a new statement of purpose, New Signs of Life subverts the band’s moniker, offering breath during suffocation; optimism in chaos with sound over sinking. • •

ALBUM ARTWORK
Too Numb to Know is another thrilling entry in Noah Anthony’s progression from the heavy electronics of his early years to the complex, razor-sharp pop songs that have increasingly come to comprise his more recent releases. While the introduction of live instrumentation on 2018’s Somewhere Else earned Anthony praise from the likes of Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, Bandcamp Daily, and The Wire, Too Numb to Know’s bright keyboards, pulsing beats, and soft, alluring vocals take Anthony’s increasingly songwriting-driven approach to entirely new levels of mastery.

Although Too Numb to Know is ultimately a record about growth, reflection, and change, messages of positiviy like those found on lead single “Hang Up” — on which Anthony urges his younger self to trust his instincts during chaos — are often so deeply entwined in Profligate’s spectral synthlines and multifaceted rhythms that they demand repeat listens to be fully revealed. Meanwhile, the melodies on more soothing tracks like “A Little Rain,” a duet featuring vocals from Gel Set’s Laura Callier, more closely align with their messages of hope and acceptance. For existing fans of Anthony’s work, kinetic bangers like “No Clear Way,” “We Can Punish,” and “A Stranger” are reminiscent of his noisier, beat-oriented years.
POINTS OF INTEREST Profligate’s Noah Anthony arises from the polluted underground stream where noise, techno, and industrial music flow together - PITCHFORK This is bold, underground sound with a contemporary bite. RESIDENT ADVISOR a winning combination of pop, experimental music, and techno - BANDCAMP ABOUT PROFLIGATE Noah Anthony’s music ranges from heavily rhythmic electronics to tightly-composed songs. His debut LP Come Follow Me, was released in 2012 on More Records, followed by a string of 12” EP’s and compilation appearances. 2014’s Finding the Floor was issued by Not Not Fun. 2018’s Somewhere Else was Profligate’s first for Wharf Cat Records.
Recorded between Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Cleveland, Too Numb to Know is a varied yet cohesive work that showcases Anthony’s ascent from basement techno to edgy electronic pop music with organic flourishes. 5/16/2020

Psychic Temple
Houses of the Holy Overview
Psychic Temple mastermind Chris Schlarb believes that “there is no double album that would not be improved by removing its worst songs and making it a single album.” But with his new 2xLP release, Houses of the Holy, Schlarb sets out to prove himself wrong. In 2016, Schlarb opened BIG EGO, a commercial recording studio in the same Long Beach neighborhood where he grew up. There he produced everyone from Terry Reid and James Gadson to Swamp Dogg and Jim Keltner. A year later, he began work on Houses of the Holy: his own attempt at solving the double album puzzle. In the modern history of rock music, the double album stands as the ultimate creative indulgence, a moment for an artist to make their grand statement amid the excess of four sides of vinyl. And yet, there is not one double LP that escapes the curse of filler: “Wah-Wah” on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass; “Night Flight” on Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti; “Piggies” on The Beatles’ White Album; “Angel” on Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Schlarb’s solution: take four existing bands and lead them into the realm of Psychic Temple. Side A, recorded in the Joshua Tree desert with Cherry Glazerr, is five whiskey-fueled songs of love, madness, and suicide. Side B delivers the legendary Chicago Underground Trio, reunited after nearly 20 years, who wrap their unmistakable sound around songs written by Schlarb, Jerry David DeCicca and James Jackson Toth. On the precipice of entering their fourth decade as one the world's great rock bands, The Dream Syndicate explode when plugged into the Psychic Temple Universe, evidenced on Side C. Side D is a euphoric closer, featuring the words of cosmic street poet Xololanxinxo, supported by the album’s largest ensemble: full orchestra, double rhythm section, and gospel choir. To hear Schlarb tell it, these four sides are the only Houses of the Holy that one ever need visit.

“Music knows what she wants,” says Moscowbased artist, Kate NV. On Room for the Moon, the lyrical follow up to the buoyant minimalism of 2018’s для FOR, NV follows this muse in fluid expression, harmonizing her lunar lullabies with a starry compositional choreography. NV says, “I always let music express herself without pressure, and with or without voice.” NV began sketching the music of Moon sometime before для FOR, but the album did not take its full shape until the artist entered a new physiological phase. After trying to make a Buchla synthesizer mirror human imperfections, she was compelled to look past the patch bay and reconnect with her own voice. “I spent almost a year and half sitting, at best, or bending over the table. In the end it, my body rebelled, on some kind of physical level.” No longer concerned with demonstrating a traditional composer’s craft of для FOR, the return to vocal forms first found on her debut album Binasu was liberating and (gasp!) gleeful.
illusion, NV’s vocals tiptoe through one track, toy with riddles on another and try to save time in a polka-dotted pocket. On “Plans,” NV, through some sort of sorcery, created a sax solo using only samples from the Found Sound Nation’s “Broken Orchestra” sample pack. A laugh slips from the sheets of music in “Ca Commence Par” like a misplaced photo. Mallet and marimba converse over mushroom tea on “Du Na.” “Tea” herself borrows melody from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and “Telefon” teases us that “there’s nowhere to hide from the song.” But that’s ok, we’re all invited to the party.
On Moon, NV’s vocals contour through screens of tulle or jars of glitter, the entire collection composed and produced by NV at home and studio spaces throughout Moscow. “I finished this record during the loneliest period of my life,” confides NV, with hints of melancholy, or fabled life lessons, adding even more depth to songs of cheery disposition. Her songs, sung in Russian, French and English, each carry unique features, like ten personas or ten scenes in a play where each character has its own keynote. Room for the Moon was conjured from unlived memories of 70s and 80s Russian and Japanese pop music and film, a 20th century fairy tale suspended in time like a moon torn from a paper sky.
Artist Highlights • Kate NV is the project of Russia-born recording artist, songwriter, and producer Kate Shilonosova. • Best known in her hometown of Moscow as the lead singer and founder of the post-punk garage band Glintshake, Kate NV is also a performer in the experimental Moscow Scratch Orchestra and releases music under an alternate alias, NV. • Shilonosova’s debut album, Binasu, was released in 2016 via Orange Milk Records. Shilonosova followed her debut with her second full length для FOR, accompanied by a short online film series by Sasha Kulak. • Room for the Moon is Kate NV’s third album and second for RVNG Intl. Room for the Moon was inspired by memories of 70s/80s Russian and Japanese pop music and movies. The album finds Kate NV singing in Russian, French, and English. She collaborated with musicians Jenya Gorbunov (bass guitar), Vladimir Luchanskiy (saxophone), Quinn Oulton (bass guitar, saxophone), Nami Sato (Japanese Narration), and Marco Passarani (marimba). • Room for the Moon is out on RVNG Intl. on LP on September 25th, 2020.
NV is accompanied by long-time music collaborators on Moon: Jenya Gorbunov on bass guitar, Vladimir Luchanskiy on saxophone, and Quinn Oulton on both instruments. Musician Nami Sato’s gentle words lift and lilt over synth for one piece, too. These friendly contributions are in service of NV’s singular vision; the album is personal and particular in its construction. Filled with warm and sweet memories of her own invention, NV says, “these songs are now my closest friends.” Moon could be made from chiffon ripples, night sky transmissions and long shadows. With each song we enter another chamber of RVNG Intl. PO Box 20752 Tompkins Sq. New York NY 10009 matt@igetrvng.com | 718 812 8443
Moon’s cast might make friends with other electric, eclectic, and visionary works of Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Akiko Yano, and Ann Steel. You know the feeling of instant affinity? It’s how you may respond to Room for the Moon. You’ll recognize something strangely familiar and inexplicably attractive, an afterglow of times spent in happy company, imagined or otherwise.
ABOUT THIS RECORD Austin-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Spencer Stephenson’s first solo LP in nearly four years End the Summertime F(or)ever is sample-studded mood board of bass-heavy abstract hip hop, spiraling psychedelia, and disco-house, that explores deep time, aging, societal upheaval, the afterlife, and the cosmic perspective as they appear through the distorting, relentless Texas heat. “I came up with the title in fall of 2018, so it was never meant to speak explicitly about pandemics or protests,” Stephenson comments, “but in the years I was putting it together I couldn’t help but acknowledge that an era of complacency was coming to a close for me and for the world, and that instinct shaped these tracks more than any other factor.” End the Summertime F(or)ever asks the listener to reexamine what adjectives like “sunny” will come to mean in a world of rising global temperature, and unrest that will inevitably keep rising with it. Will cultural relics like Gershwin’s “Summertime” come off as smug reminders of a more verdant past? Isn’t sunlight, often considered a rejuvenating force in the realm of metaphor, also capable of fading, melting, and warping all that it touches? Isn’t that sun that we long for in winter the same one that will someday swallow the Earth with total indifference? In the meantime Botany hosts an auditory mass exorcism for the angst, fatigue, confusion, and fervor of the times, summed up in the album’s spoken-word tagline spliced from self-help tapes and evangelical rants: “You’re off by yourself / in a quiet place / picture the Earth / as seen from Space / it’ll be so groovy / it’ll be so great / at the end of summer / and the United States.”
MORE INFO • Botany’s music has received praise from Pitchfork, Wire, Gorilla vs. Bear, Stereogum, and many others. • Botany has worked with Father John Misty, Mndsgn, Milo, Open Mike Eagle, Balmorhea, Benoit Pioulard, Heems, and many others on collaborations and remixes. • Botany performed at Bonnaroo 2016 as part of the Red Bull Music Academy, has played Levitation, CMJ, Roskilde, and SXSW, in addition to his last tour with The Octopus Project. PRESS QUOTES "[a] gifted sound poet... immediately pulls you in, captures your attention and then holds it long after playback." - THE WIRE "Spencer Stephenson doesn’t mangle his source sounds into post-Madlib sample quilts; instead he bricks up a transcendent wall of sound, conjuring up memories of private press synth records and spiritual free jazz odysseys in the process." - FACT "creates billowing psychedelic constructs while using the cut-and-paste methodology of an old-school hip hop producer. Think a late entry into Eno's Ambient series from DJ Shadow." - UNCUT
