Meanwhile elements of dub music creep into "Fill Space", a slinky number that would make Vivien Goldman jealous, and wouldn't sound out of place on On-U Sound's legendar y stable of for ward-thinking, dub-inflected dance music. "Do The Duvet" really shines when the group hits the dance floor and lets the synthetic thump of the rhythm section take the wheel on songs like "Je Suis le Bebe", "Repeat" and "(Re)P.R.O.D.U.C.E.". This is "disco (not disco)" using an addictive synthetic throb designed to get the party moving,

With Guy twisting the knobs and helping to shape the sound of the record, Simone, Kazu, and Amedeo found themselves in an ideal environment to create a distinctive record. From the first notes of “Equally Damaged”, you are drawn in - starting with a simple, twisted melody, augmented bit by bit with rhythms and the distinctive vocals and lyrics which are the center of these songs. Moved dramatically to the front of the mix, the vocals on this record are rich and melodic, sometimes recorded with three mics at once to get the depth of the sound. These songs are reminiscent of the twisted sentimentality of Serge Gainsbourg. Using basic instruments, melodies, and rhythms, the recording, the instrumentation, and the general presentation of each song create intricately layered, provocative, and genuinely emotional songs that continue to play themselves in your head for days. The mix of the guitars, the power of the drums, and the infectiousness of the rhythms, combined with the remarkable vocals and lyrics, make Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons a beautiful release.

In 2000, Aesop Rock released his first official album, Float, following his steady ascent in the underground from two previous releases, the collection of works CD of lore, Music For Earthworms (1997), and the Appleseed EP (1999). And, while every album Aesop has done since then has captured his continual evolution as both a producer and a writer, Float was undeniably exceptional in its own right. For one, there was something impacting about a full-length album, 20 tracks deep, that never had any singles. Every track only existed as part of the album experience. That in mind, the album’s production is split nearly in half between Aesop Rock and longtime collaborator and good friend, Blockhead, as well as one offering from Omega One, the Reggae-vibed “Skip Town”. The album’s production largely seems to have one collective goal, to immediately capture the intended mood, luring the listener in and leaving them attentive and prepared for the carefully crafted accompanying lyricism. Lyrics in mind, Aesop Rock is clearly the star of the record, but the few guest appearances, strategically spread throughout the album, are either the result of great foresight or unavoidable synergy—perhaps both—as Slug (of Atmosphere), Vast Aire (of Cannibal Ox), and Dose One were all right in the midst, or directly on the verge, of breakthrough career moments of their own around the same time they were featured on Float. As for Aesop, the album finds him diving deep into his intricate, visually descriptive and emotionally riveting writing style, which has only gotten more vigorous and diverse over time. His delivery feels settled into the hints of urgency, as if he is well aware that the journey and challenges, as well as triumphs, that he shall face are arduous and plentiful. Twenty years after its debut, Float is a time capsule of an artist on the brink of fully tapping into creative freedom, while the industry was simultaneously in the middle of a notable shift, which still remains a powerful statement on its own, decades later. To celebrate, Rhymesayers is re-releasing Float on 2xLP vinyl, available in three different, limited edition colorways!

DUKES OF CHUTNEY Hazel Dukes of Chutney, the transcontinental trio of Dustin Lynn, John Paul Jones, and Petra, explore the different spaces and places, between nothingness and nature, that nurture inner and outer peace for their debut full-length Hazel. Cosmic yet intimate, long-gestating and free-flowing, diffuse and centered, Dukes turned toward their immediate sanctum, and a network of friends and colleagues, to realize the vision of Hazel.

“Pretty much everything we do is without purpose,” the Dukes admit, in line with their pursuit of joy. But it’s not empty hedonism or passivity at play on Hazel, so much as an expression of freedom. “Why not?” was scribbled on the white frame of the Polaroid documenting their first appearance on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space many years ago, and it remains their motto, their mantra. So who is Hazel? Well, Hazel is a tree, or else a color in constant change, thanks to the natural phenomenon that is the Rayleigh scattering of light. “Hazel” is also the song that ushers us into this album’s environment. And just like our world, the Dukes’ world contains multitudes and amalgams, foggy notions and clarity, lightness and darkness. Perhaps to capture an openendedness, or possibility, in the ever-unraveling present of this world, the trio wandered wide and wild to capture everything on Hazel. True to a surfer’s sense of time (Jones and Lynn are both wave sliders), the Dukes’ first longplayer arrives seven years after the delirious dream of Domino, their debut EP. It was a long, not necessarily strange trip as much as a revelatory journey, with recording sessions taking place from Venice Beach to Sausalito, Mexico City to Minneapolis, Sicily to Berlin (where vocalist Petra calls home), national parks to beachside drifts, with an East Village studio apartment thrown in for good, gritty measure. Each landscape seeps into Hazel and causes the colors to run even more. While making their rounds around the globe, Dukes reached out to friends and fellow travelers and seekers, letting each contributor add a little bit of themselves to the music. Arp synthesizer runs, patient nylon string guitar fretting, echo-laden sax and flute, suitcase organ, melodica, toy xylophone, and even a fiddle, all gurgle up in the mix and lend to the collective and complete clarity of Hazel’s vision. Hazel can be many shades at once while also refracting into a single hue for the eye’s mind.

Traces of bossa nova and whispered folk mix with the natural ambience that inspired its creation. There are steady throbs like a memory of a night of revelry and bliss, the kind of sonic tingle that evokes headswim or shoegaze. You can also pick out dub and jazz, Afro-cosmic and tropicália, Balearic and Japanese environmental music, spaghetti westerns and dream pop. Or you can just let go of these ideas of taxonomy and genre tags and just let Hazel wash over you. Why not? Ultimately and ineffably, the Dukes evoke sounds of the past while ferrying them into the future, no matter how uncertain tomorrow might seem. It’s a calm for our current, collective mind, bringing us back to center, even if the sounds themselves are happy playing leftfield. For all of the expert craftsmanship, their thoughtful collaborations, and lysergic titles, Hazel is grounded in nature, a pathway for bare feet to find peace. Dukes of Chutney’s Hazel is available digitally and as a gatefold, double LP on September 4th on Beats In Space Records. A portion of proceeds from this release will be donated to Amazon Frontlines, an organization dedicated to supporting the struggles of indigenous peoples to defend their rights to land, life and cultural survival in the Amazon Rainforest. Artist Highlights • Following the widely praised and cherished EP from 2013, Domino, Dukes of Chutney spent the last seven years crafting their first full-length album, Hazel, pulling from dub, folk, Balearic, ambient, and other sounds of bliss • Berlin-based vocalist Petra joined the group in the mid ‘10s to grace Hazel with breezy, dubby vocals • A limited, one-time pressing of 400 gatefold 2xLPs will be available for the world • Hazel features guest instrumentalists Wovette and E Ruscha V • There will be a handful of music videos to support Hazel, including “Little War”, “Scent of India”, “Flying Horse”, and more. • International PR teams include Phantom Limb (UK) and Dense Media (DE) • A portion of proceeds will be donated to Amazon Frontlines, an organization dedicated to supporting the struggles of indigenous peoples to defend their rights to land, life and cultural survival in the Amazon Rainforest, as part of our Come! Or Not Thibault About the album Thibault is the long-awaited new project for Melbourne, Australia musician Nicole Thibault. Her drily-titled debut album Or Not Thibault is full of harmonic invention, unexpected arrangements, and atmospheres so lush they make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It moves seamlessly from humour to genuine pathos, from spacious mystery to kinetic energy. Nicole’s former band Minimum Chips were a cornerstone of Chapter Music’s fabled 90s roster. For a decade or so, Minimum Chips played Moog-driven motorik pop that made them support band of choice for touring artists like Stereolab, Pavement, Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Nicole’s vocals, trombone, keyboards and songwriting helped grow a cult mystique around Min Chips that persists to this day. Nicole took time off in the late 00s to raise a family, but recently returned to music with the support of a new generation of Melbourne pop kids. Or Not Thibault includes contributions from Zak Olsen (Orb, Traffik Island), Bec Liston (Parsnip), Lachlan Denton (The Ocean Party) as well as Minimum Chips co-conspirator Julian Patterson. The live Thibault band currently features Zak, Bec and Stella Rennex (Parsnip).

The duo moved to Athens, GA and was soon granted the seasoned drummer, John Spiegel, and eventually fulfilled with Kiran Jeremy Fernandes (keyboards, clarinets, flutes), descendant of Elephant 6’s beloved John Fernandes (Circulatory System, Olivia Tremor Control, Cloud Recordings). “Immaterial Possession”, the debut LP to be released on Cloud Recordings, is as much a visual journey as auditory. With Holmes, Polites, and Fernandes all sharing ties to surreal and abstract theater, each song on the album creates a distinct ‘world’ of impression and mystery. The album commences with the apocalyptic fury of “Midnight Wander” to “See Through Stares”– the catching pop tale of altering the past through the present. It takes you through the psychedelic landscapes of “In the Loom”, the hallucinatory darkness of “Accidental Summoning”, towards the final ‘Night Cap’ – a soft, but inescapable ushering into the depths of the ancestral dream state. “Travel sideways through time, via this eerily compelling collection of shadowy Southern-Gothic vistas. As inviting as these 11 lilting daydreams may be, as soon as you’ve nestled into the feeling of floating in some warm Aegean waters...off an abandoned beach...lost in time...you could be overtaken by a dark chill, as the emptiness all around you sinks in. Layers of ever-shifting instrumental color are tethered together by velvety voices, telling of a restless wanderlust, of so many hidden, unseen places. Hear it in the insistent, exploratory guitar figures, plucked in such a way as to make a Telecaster sound more like Andalusian lutes, in a feverish dialog with the spirit-world keyboard voices, often in foreign tongues, (and Casio-tones!). Hear it in the slinking rhythm-section, at one moment locked in a careening post-punk whirl, and the next — settled into a whirl more suited for a Dervish or a Salome dance. Like the best of the mind-expanding troubadours of the ’60s, this psychedelic-noir folk rock seems to have secrets to tell, but would rather lift the cloth off the bread-basket to reveal morsels more like puzzles than pop songs.” — Josh McKay (Deerhunter)

There’s no victim to rescue. There’s no evil to thwart. There’s no tyranny to turnover. Instead of saving the day against his better judgment, he just walks a Sisyphean circle of existential malaise doomed to repeat yesterday’s vices without the promise of a better tomorrow. Rather than tell this story on the screen or on the page, Uniform tell it on their fourth fulllength album, Shame. The trio – Michael Berdan (vocals), Ben Greenberg (guitar, production), and Mike Sharp (drums) – strain struggle through an industrialized mill of grating guitars, warped electronics, war-torn percussion, and demonically catchy vocalizations. “Thematically, the album is like a classic hard-boiled paperback novel without a case,” says Berdan. “It focuses on the static state of an antihero as he mulls over his life in the interim between major events, just existing in the world. At the time we were making the record, I was reading books by Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, and Dashiell Hammet and strangely found myself identifying with the internal dialogues of characters like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe.” The lead-up to this moment proved just as intriguing as any of those characters’ exploits. Born in 2013, Uniform bulldozed a path to the forefront of underground music. Following Perfect World (2015) and Wake in Fright (2017), the group’s third offering, The Long Walk (2018), represented a critical high watermark. Pitchfork christened it “their most unified—and most deranged—record to date,” and The Line of Best Fit crowned them “vanguards within the genre.” In addition to touring with the likes of Deafheaven and Boris, they joined forces with The Body for a pair of collaborative albums – Mental Wounds Not Healing (2018) and Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back (2019) – as well as a live release, Live at the End of the World (2020). When it came time to pen Shame, Berdan made a conscious decision to include lyrics, marking a first.

LUCRECIA DALT No era sólida Lucrecia Dalt presents No era sólida, an introspective path to unworldly surroundings where self becomes sound, and a compass for the searchers of musical possession.

For her follow-up full-length to 2018’s Anticlines, Dalt relinquishes control of the corporeal to reach imagination’s outer realm. Where Anticlines framed the physical processes of matter changing state, No era sólida observes a transition in Dalt herself through the emergence of Lia: an apparition, or second self, of the artist as pure gesture and mimetic transgression. In spectral suspension, Dalt becomes the medium between herself and Lia. No era sólida is a meeting place between these phenomenal and noumenal worlds: a diverse if not complicated landscape, but without a single solid form in sight. Swelling with cosmic oscillations and rhythmic tremors, the album’s sound materializes through new experiments with harmonic distortion in tape delay and Dalt’s continued abstraction of percussion and pulse. This atmosphere of auditory illusion is lush for vocal experimentation. In a mood stirred by griot singer Fanta Damba, Dalt produces wordless vocalizations guided by Lia’s unconscious impulses. These ethereal murmurs channel a Surrealist’s automatism as Dalt dissolves language into an evocative collection of glossolalia. Her voice, possessed and processed, weaves through moments of No era sólida like a duplicitous organism playing hide and seek. Each song identifies a different state experienced by Lia, opening with Disuelta (“dissolved”) and transforming through pieces such as Seca (“dry”), Ser boca (“to be mouth”), and Espesa (“thick”). As the record progresses, Lia seems to emerge from primal, sensory states to the sentient and active conditions of Revuelta (“revolt”) and Endiendo (“to understand”). These transitions signal a process of becoming, as Dalt conjures, and nurtures, a dormant being into life. When No era sólida reaches its final title track, the spell of spoken tongue is broken and Lia can talk. Returning to the musings familiar to listeners of Anticlines, Dalt voices in her native Spanish a question posed to her by Lia: “Can paralysis transform a person into a thing?” The forbidden being fumbles lyrically through the nuances of her existence and newly-discovered senses, and wades through melodies of crystalline breathing and clicks of static like dust on a cylinder. Lia’s poetic reflections on the panspermia echo her origins, having come from some other ether. As a lifeform seeded through sound, the very essence of Lia is embodied in the exploratory instincts of her creator Lucrecia Dalt, an artist whose innate

sonar system traces the far reaches of musical experimentation. Lucrecia Dalt’s No era sólida is available September 11th, 2020 on vinyl and digital formats. As with Anticlines, a limited artist edition, designed by Will Work For Good, will accompany the vinyl release. Once again, a portion of proceeds from No era sólida will benefit Tierra Digna, an organization dedicated to the defense of Colombian communities affected by economic policies that violate human rights and devastate the environment. Artist Highlights • Lucrecia Dalt is a Colombian recording artist, songwriter, and producer. • After studying civil engineering in Colombia, Dalt worked at a geo-technical company for two years and has since lived in Barcelona and Berlin, where she currently resides. • She has released six solo albums and has collaborated with musicians Aaron Dilloway, Jan Jelinek, and Gudrun Gut, to name a few. • Dalt has received critical acclaim from top-tier music and culture publications such as DAZED, The Wire, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Resident Advisor, FACT, BBC Radio, CRACK, SPEX, NTS and more • Beyond the acclaim of her recorded albums, Dalt’s recent projects include the audiovisual opera performance V.I.T.R.I.O.L., created with Regina de Miguel for Berlin’s CTM Festival and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, as well as a spatial sound installation with Maria Thereza Alves, presented at the Botanischer Garten, Berlin • No era sólida is Dalt’s seventh solo record, and her second on RVNG Intl., following the release of 2018’s Anticlines. No era sólida is an introspective venture into visceral sonic terrain, as Dalt sets out to capture the moment when one becomes pure sound. • The album observes a transition in Dalt herself through the emergence of an alternate ego / state of self named Lia. Each song identifies a different state experienced by Lia, opening with Disuelta (‘dissolved’) and transforming through pieces such as Seca (‘to be dry’), Ser boca (‘to be mouth’), Espesa (‘thick’). • RVNG Intl. will release No era sólida on September 11th, 2020 on vinyl, and digital formats. On behalf of Lucrecia Dalt and RVNG, a portion of the proceeds from this release will benefit Tierra Digna,an organization dedicated to the defense of Colombian communities affected by economic policies that violate human rights and devastate the environment. MERCE LEMON
MOONTH
Merce Lemon is a songwriter born, raised, and currently living in Pittsburgh, PA. She grew up immersed in the city’s DIY scene, writing songs and playing in bands, including a punk band called Two Dragons Black and Red, until around the age of 12.
Release Details
She then took a hiatus from performing through her teen years, not finding her voice again until moving to Seattle for her last year of high school. There she met Dylan Hanwright of the band Great Grandpa, who produced two releases with her: ‘Ideal For a Light Flow With Your Body’ and ‘Girls Who Jump In’. These songs were re-released in 2020 by Pittsburgh record label Crafted Sounds.
DAR033
After moving back to Pittsburgh in the fall of 2017, Merce recruited a new band—including her father Greg Pierce on guitar. On her new album ‘Moonth’ Lemon and her band craft an intimate and starkly confessional sonic world of songs that grapple with large-scale ideas. The nature of identity, the body, memory, and relationships are all explored through the lens of fluidity, with water as a recurring motif in her songwriting, and a fitting complement to lyrics and arrangements that draw you in like a gentle tide.
Selling Points • Smoky clear cassette is a limited pressing of 50 copies. • Moonth named New & Notable on Bandcamp. • Press support from Phluff, Hullaballoo, Balloon Machine, and more. • Recent shows with Kimya Dawson, Great Grandpa, Mothers, Emily Yacina, Horse Jumper of Love, Rachel Levy, Spencer Radcliffe, and Mega Bog.
