In the words of Coco Chanel, “elegance is refusal.” The Narcissist knows there’s more to the art of dressing than wearing a label. Acknowledging her body as a canvas, she has the courage to define fashion and luxury in her own style. She adores sculpted forms, colours and textures that can be worn like a second skin. As an advocate of true craftmanship, she expects sustainable, bespoke and artisan qualities from her beloved brands. Her great loves include the rush of finding something so beautiful it escapes value and of course, breakfast in bed.

y roots are in fine art photography,” says talented artist Alexia, who is shortlisted for this year’s National Photographic Portrait Prize. Among her accolades is a Harper’s Bazaar Canon Fashion Photography Award and the National Tertiary Art Prize. Her historical fine art series The Royal Dozen and The Regal Twelve collate lavish portraits of queens, princes, warlords, dandies and diplomats. “The pieces are legends of the lives of the nobles, who continue to captivate us today, from the pampered decadence of Louis XIV to the epic legend of Alexander the Great.” Alexia travels the world photographing architecture and landscapes as backdrops and scenes. She hand-makes bespoke costumes for each character, photographs role-playing models and props in studio, before meticulously stitching together photographs and hand-painted illustrations like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Define Sydney style. Sydney is a city subtly segregated into a series of micro cities, each with their own sense of style. I live and work in the Eastern Suburbs, a district rich with galleries, design, boutiques and eateries. Share a stylish city secret… Object Gallery in Surry Hills which sits above my favourite shop: Garlands, the florist. Where do you... stop for coffee? Bourke Street Bakery or The Book Kitchen. Shop? Up and down Oxford Street and in Paddington’s alleyways for fashion. I walk down to Fratelli Fresh in Waterloo for ingredients to

feed my cooking obsession. Relax and unwind? Lying in the grass of Centennial Park, having friends over for a meal at home or watching a film at Verona Cinema. Get a culture fix? The Australian Centre for Photography or Sydney Dance Theatre. What excites you about Sydney? The villages forming throughout the inner suburbs, bringing their own style and energy and expression. A Moment in Fashion

In the

Trenches L

ike the Chanel suit and the Birkin bag, the Burberry trench is one of fashion’s most iconic pieces. You will associate this coat with classic Hollywood: Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman in Kramer versus Kramer and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Burberry has always secured the most apt famous faces to suit their campaigns. Think Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and even royalty. The trench coat was created in 1901 when founder Thomas Burberry put forward the garment as the

official raincoat for British Army officers and it got it’s name after being worn by soldiers fighting in the trenches. The raincoat is a full cut, double-breasted, belted coat, featuring a buttoned yoke at the back, a buttoned flap over the right shoulder at the front and epaulets as well as silver rings as stylish design details. The modern trench coat is almost identical in style to the original issue. It is the must-have cover up for city slickers on the go, just in case of a light rain shower. Responsible for the artistic vision of the festival, Sydney Film Festival Director Clare Stewart is the woman responsible for broadening Sydney’s cinematic culture. She is also a passionate Sydneysider.

What do you love about your job? Travelling the world in search of the best films, but nothing beats the anticipatory hush as the lights go down before a premiere at the State Theatre. Which movie should not be missed? One must-see is the world premiere of an extraordinary new 3D work from iCinema, which is a joint project between UNSW and COFA. It is a spooky, fairytale world. You must interact with it to drive the story, like a game. Shadowy characters read your moves using artificial intelligence and try to stop you from completing the story. How brilliant that this world-leading technology has been generated here. 16 SYDNEY STYLE SETTERS STYLE SEEKERS GUIDE

Tell us a Sydney fashion secret. I love to shop and fashion in Sydney excites me. I am a huge fan of Dinosaur Designs, Romance Was Born, Akira and Carl Kapp. Tell us your favourite things about Sydney? Everyday life in Sydney excites me. Walking in Rushcutter’s Park, rooftop BBQs with my friends, shopping at the Saturday market in Kings Cross, riding my red bike to work in Surry Hills and swimming at the Boy Charlton or Red Leaf pools with my goddaughter Elodie. These are the things I miss when I am on the road. And then there is the Sydney Film Festival itself, my favourite thing about Sydney!
