Michael Weibling Jr. and Jason Vine welcome you to the very first edition of Scenes Magazine, a new local magazine devoted to providing the community with a high-quality, visual experience of the local scene.
Our cover says, “Indulge in the pleasure of just looking at the pictures.” Most of us are guilty of flipping through the pages, but Scenes Magazine conveniently takes the guilt out of the pleasure. You’ll enjoy seeing friends, family, and neighbors as they view and participate in local events. You’ll also marvel at some of the spectacular sites of the North State, helping to remind us just how beautiful this area is. Some of the pictures will have descriptive captions, while others will be left to discuss who, what, when, and where amongst yourselves.
There is much to recognize, acknowledge, and appreciate about our local neighborhoods, schools, churches, businesses, and more, thus, we are encouraging the creation of a local ‘celebrity vibe’ to help maintain a ‘community vibe’ that seems more necessary than ever in this global age.
We are looking forward to sharing future
issues with all of you, but BEWARE, you may be the next, or in this case the first face featured on the cover of Scenes Magazine.

You won’t find many engaging news stories or in-depth journalism; however, we will provide a forum to let your opinions be known on almost any topic of interest, as we look to encourage as much community participation as possible. Send us your letters and articles on any topic you feel deserves an audience to views@scenesmag.com, and we may choose to share your views in a future issue of Scenes.
Most importantly, we want to include you in the main content of the magazine. Not only with your own photo, but with all of your photos. You know, the ones on your computer that you haven’t seen since you took ‘em, or the ones in your old photo album covered in dust. Send us the best of the bunch, and we’ll consider publishing them in a future issue of Scenes magazine. These are just some of the beautiful Scenes from around Red Bluff. Clockwise from the top left; 1) A front view of the Tehama County Courthouse. Built in 1922, the courthouse remains a centerpiece of the community. 2) The corner of Washington and Elm Streets is sprawling with mature palm trees and a classic victorian. 3) The Sacramento River can be seen meandering through Red Bluff from several different public parks, including this view from Ide Adobe Park. 4) The new Cone & Kimball tower can be seen from all over town, and adds a new landmark to the already historic downtown area. 5) This building on the corner of Oak and Washington seems to be unappreciated by most. It is truly an architectural beauty. 6) A welcoming sign at the corner of Main and Adobe tells visitors what the residents already know.

The Home Scene
wn a piece of history! When the Jelly Family, the owners of the historic Jelly’s Ferry on the Sacramento River, migrated to Northern Ca. in the early1800’s, this is where they settled down. The home is made of brick and the walls are over a foot thick. Covered porches facing east and west once watched for weary travelers, who often stayed over to rest before moving on. The home is over 150 years old and is in incredible shape! The floors are level and the walls true. It’s said that the foundation is ten feet deep and ten feet wide at the bottom. The home was modernized in the 70’s by adding a kitchen. Before that,
there was a seperate cookhouse. Many of the artifacts, tools and equipment from the past are included. Find a national geographic magazine from the 20’s, or a San Franscisco Chronicle from then too, stacks of ‘em; wagon wheels, milk cans, tractors, safes. It even once had its own post mark. The home is solid with a good roof, very livable, two barns and great soil. Truly a one of a kind!!
Mt. Lassen may not be for sale, but this view of the spectacular volcano is, along with 120 acres with a gorgeous setting, and if you turn 90o to the North, the view is almost as good of Mt. Shasta. It’s hard to find this kind of property fronting on a paved road, with power at the property line, but this one is available now, and for only $325,000.

Scenes Magazine is pleased to introduce you to someone and someplace many of you probably know already, but still might learn something about. Venita Philbrick is a longtime Red Bluff resident, and a passionate art enthusiast. In 2004, as a council member of Tehama County Arts, she played an instrumental part in declaring March 2004 as “Arts Education’ month. For the past 10 years, much of her passion for the arts has been devoted to the State Theater, which she would much rather see get more attention than her. Fortunately for the rest of us, we can get to know both of them a little better. As for the State Theater, it’s story goes back to even before it was built in 1908. Prior to the building, the site was home to an entertainment pavilion. When that burned down, a new entertainment structure would be built in its’ place, called the Orpheum Theater, or the Opera House. At the time, it was the largest California stage north of
Sacramento. It wasn’t until after a major remodel in 1928 that it got it’s name that it still carries today. But in 1944, a devastating fire destroyed most of the building, leaving only the concrete walls still standing, and on May 24, 1946, The State Theater, as it has been broought back to life in recent years, was reopened with a showing of “Blue Dahlia”. Mrs. Venita Philbrick is married with 6 children, two of her own and four of her husband’s, and 8 grandchildren. When asked what her favorite events at the State Theater were, Venita replied, “Oh gosh, probably anything involving children or young adults. It’s our job to create audiences of the future so places like the State Theater stay alive. “ We also asked her who the biggest influence in her life has been, “There have been many people in and out of my life... each one leaves something in your heart or head that has contributed to the person you are at any given time.” On a lighter note, Venita also expressed her desire for her morning coffee. “I have a latte every morning... kind of a ‘start your engine’ habit... on a cold day, serves as a good hand warmer!” Thank you Venita, we look forward to enjoying more of your work with this historical entertainment venue known to all of us as ‘The State Theater’.
