“You don’t feel much like ridin’, you just wish the trip was through.” I still don’t get the “is that a woman or a man” line from that song, but I turned the page on that one a long time ago. Now it’s time to turn it on the 1st decade of the new millenium, which all of a sudden isn’t so new anymore. Have we named the decade yet? Without a title it’s almost like it never even happened. Think back to last century, we can all identify with the roaring ‘20’s, the depressed ‘30’s, a world war in the 40’s, Elvis in the 50’s, hippies in the 60’s, and 70’s, bad hair in the 80’s, and flannels in the 90’s, but the other two decades, whatever they’re called, don’t seem to have any identity at all. Why? Because since they have passed, we have had no way to easily refer to them. So, I can imagine that after 10 years of saying ‘last decade’ and so many tongue twisting attempts to explain the time period after that, people just gave up and stopped recalling those days at all. I’d like to think that won’t happen again, but I still haven’t heard a good name to refer to the past decade as, and after 100 years, apparently nobody came up with any good ideas for the 1st decade of the last century, and so on before that. So until there is a way to refer to it, we’ll just have to trust Bob Seger and be glad it’s over. Thank you to all of you who continue to support our effort with this magazine, and Happy New Year!!!

Mountain Man Rendezvous I
n the early 19th century, the men that called the mountains their home were in need of supplies. In response, William H. Ashley organized the first supply train to the Central Rockies so that they could remain in the mountains. With the distribution of these supplies in 1825 at a pre-selected site, the fur trade rendezvous was born, and is still alive today. In Red Bluff, the Yolla Bolly Frontiersmen host an annual rendezvous every November, where all modern luxuries are left behind, and the old west is relived. Bear(opposite page) is one of many who participate in these events all across the western United States. With plenty of black powder shooting and fur trading, the good ole’ days don’t seem so old to these folks.
