The symbol of our Spa is the Ginkgo leaf, an object of veneration across cultures. Revered for its beauty, its resilience and its longevity, the Gingko is a living fossil, unchanged for more than 200 million years. This demonstration of resilience, combined with its antiquity, has granted the tree many symbolic meanings throughout the world.
For centuries, the ginkgo tree has served as a symbol of hope and peace in its native land of China, represented widely in Chinese literature and art, dating back to the 5th century A.D
Reflecting strength and resilience, six ginkgo trees survived the nuclear blast on Hiroshima. Even though scientists predicted that nothing would grow at the site for 75 years, the ginkgo trees fully recovered, and ginkgo is regarded as a symbol of endurance and vitality.
Eastern cultures have always embraced the concept of duality, expressed as yin and yang, where light and darkness are of equal import. The leaves of the gingko are used to symbolize and celebrate the importance of both the yin and the yang.
It has become a symbol of strength, hope and peace for many, a sacred tree of the East, a symbol of unity of opposites, a symbol of changelessness, possessing miraculous power, a bearer of hope and of the immeasurable past, and a symbol of love.
