Handcrafted by Scenic
Norway Longships were a type of ship invented and used by the Norsemen for trade, commerce, exploration, and warfare during the Viking Age. Hand-carved, these longships were graceful, narrow and light wooden boats, with a shallow-draft hull designed for speed. The first longships can be dated back to between 500 and 300 BC.
WONDER We all strive to feel a closer connection with our surroundings, moments when we move beyond the physical and become truly emotionally engaged in an experience with all of our senses — a moment of wonder. Wonder is a personal emotion, it’s about the heart and the mind, joy, surprise, curiosity and awe. Wonder can be a whole day or a fleeting moment. Travel is about more than distance. It offers us not just a journey across the world to see new sights but to the heart of what it means to be human. It allows us to step outside our normal parameters and become enriched by what we encounter. It presents us with limitless possibilities to become more than we were before. At Scenic we celebrate the art of wonder through travel. Our aim is to elevate your cruise from a mere holiday into a journey of discovery. Never lose your sense of wonder.

History of the Vikings With advanced sea-faring skills, bloody determination and a fair amount of brawn, the Vikings were a dominant force in northern Europe from the 8th to 11th centuries. Famed storytellers and clever merchants, their legacy can be found throughout modern Norway. Dramatic and breathtaking, you’ll never forget your first sight of a Norwegian fjord. Foaming waterfalls, steep precipices, rugged mountains that touch the heavens and verdant pastures, there’s never the same vista twice as we make our way through this incredible location. It’s no surprise that the Vikings revered these natural wonders, building their famed wooden longboats to navigate through them with ease.

B
Preserving the wonder Wildlife that can be found on the Arctic tundra include the Arctic hare, lemming, muskox, and caribou. They are preyed on by the snowy owl, Arctic fox and wolf. The Polar bear is also a predator, though it prefers to hunt for marine life from the ice. There are also many birds and marine species endemic to the colder northern regions. Other land animals include wolverines, ermines, and Arctic ground squirrels. Marine mammals include seals, walrus, and several species of cetacean – baleen whales and also narwhals, killer whales and belugas. With an extremely sensitive environment it is protected by the Arctic Council and Scenic Eclipse has been built to ensure that we will have minimal impact upon this fragile and unique ecosystem.

Glaciers, bays and fjords Getting out into the big wild is one of the reasons we cruise to the Arctic and with our discovery elements located on board at all times, whether it's on a kayak, Zodiac or submarine*, there will never be a missed opportunity for our guests to experience the wonders of the region. One of the most astonishing experiences will be the chance to witness a glacier calving. These ancient rivers of ice form over centuries and are distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that form on the surface of bodies of water. Our guests will be able to witness both Monacobreen Glacier on Svalbard and the 14th July Glacier which is located at northwestern Spitsbergen in the Krossfjord, named by Prince Albert I of Monaco in the early 20th century to pay homage to the French National Day (Bastille Day).
27
Bourbonhamna lies in a narrow bay on the west coast of Spitsbergen. Here you will find a hunter's cabin, grinding wheel and two overturned boats at Ingebrigstenbukta. However, it's the massive piles of beluga whalebones that catch everybody's attention. The bones and all the artefacts are protected by the Svalbard Government and can't be removed. Edgeøya is a Norwegian island located in the southeast of the Svalbard archipelago; it is the third largest island in this archipelago and forms part of the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve, home to Polar bears and reindeer. Our guests will also have the chance to visit Hornsund, a stunning fjord on the western side of the southernmost tip of Spitsbergen island.

Lands of myth and legends Explore the strongholds of the Vikings, from the fjords of Norway to the wild islands of Scotland.
A Stonemasonry, St Magnus Cathedral B Calanais Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis
B
The heart of Viking history When the Vikings first struck out across the sea their first ports of call were the many tiny, craggy islands situated to the north of Scotland’s mainland. Over the centuries they integrated with the local cultures and today many of these places still remain deeply Norse influenced. They also happen to be extremely beautiful and friendly places. You’ll love travelling across them all from the Shetlands to Orkney, the Outer Hebrides and Skye, they each have a unique character and you’ll discover plenty to delight.
Scenic°
Viking cities Surrounded by seven hills and seven fjords Bergen is a naturally beautiful town, however its unique place in Viking history is what draws many visitors to its shores. You'll have plenty of time to explore this rich history, including a visit to the Bergen Maritime Museum. Visit Lerwick, on the tiny island of Shetland. Thoroughly influenced by the Norse invaders who colonised Shetland for over 200 years, this island hosts a treasure trove of Viking history and rare archaeological sites. Discover Britain’s most northerly cathedral located in Kirkwall. Known as the ‘light in the north’ it was founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his uncle St Magnus. Stonemasons have carefully restored the building to ensure the original sandstone remains and much of it has stood for over 850 years.
35
Calanais Standing Stones and Mousa Broch On the Isle of Lewis you'll discover the Calanais Standing Stones – an incredible cross-shaped setting of stones erected 5,000 years ago. They predate England’s famous Stonehenge monument, and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. On the Shetland Islands you'll encounter Mousa Broch. Standing 13 metres high, Mousa is Scotland's most impressive and best surviving Iron Age tower or broch. They were clearly both defensive and prestigious buildings and were built in Shetland around 400-200 BC.
36 Scenic° A
Scottish Isles Scattered along the rugged coastline, staggeringly beautiful, fiercely loved and utterly unique, the many islands of Scotland will take your breath away.
B
Island magic Great Britain's most northerly islands, the Shetlands are an intriguing mix of Norwegian and Scottish history. Heavily influenced by a Viking past, they contain some of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in Scotland. Another island chain that owes much to its Viking past are the Orkney Isles. With mystical standing stones and tales aplenty of the sea, there is an element of myth and magic to the Orkney that you'll discover as soon as you step off Scenic Eclipse. The Outer Hebrides archipelago is soaked in Gaelic pride, the west coast of Lewis with its prehistoric sites, beautiful beaches and fascinating town of Stornaway is the ideal place to explore with our discovery elements including kayaks, Zodiacs, helicopters and submarine*.
A Highland coo, Harris Island B Jarlshof, Shetland Islands *Submarine, helicopter and scuba excursions available for an additional fee.
Scenic°
The fair Isle of Skye is one of the prettiest islands to be found in Scotland, with sweeping vistas of green mountains, lochs and harbours. With a rich history and a bustling community your port of Portree is a delight to visit.
Puffins aplenty Scotland is a bird enthusiast’s paradise. With its arresting colour-scheme, rolling walk and comic expression, the puffin is definitely Scotland’s most popular bird. Join a kayak or Zodiac excursion around the Scottish Isles to see this creature in its natural habitat.
37
The Highland coo Another popular native is the Scottish Highland coo (cow) which features a distinctive shaggy coat of brownish wavy hair and spreading horns. You’ll have plenty of time to meet these locals during your time on the islands.
Up in the air One of the great thrills of your time in the Scottish Islands will be the opportunity to take to the skies in our helicopters*. Soar high over the Highlands to experience the sheer magnitude and majesty of one of the last great wild regions on Earth.

The land of the saga Iceland is a land of storytellers and their most famous tales are known as sagas. Íslendingasögur are prose narratives mostly based on historical events that took place in Iceland in the 9th – 11th centuries, during the so-called Saga Age. They are the best-known specimens of Icelandic literature. They reflect the struggle and conflict that arose within the societies of the early generations of Icelandic settlers and are a source of great pride for modern day Icelanders. During your time in this incredible country, you'll be sure to come across a saga or two and be swept away to the time of the Vikings.
Scenic°
Waterfall of the gods The Goðafoss or the ‘waterfall of the gods’ is one of the most remarkable waterfalls in all of Iceland. Situated in the island’s central north, crystal clear water cascades over the horseshoe-shaped falls which measure 12 metres in height and 30 metres in width.
Geysers and glaciers Visit the wonderful Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. The spa is located in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulphur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to possess healing qualities. Jump on board one of Scenic Eclipse’s helicopters* and experience the thrill of flying over one of the world’s great glaciers. The Vatnajökull Glacier is the
43
largest in Iceland and the second largest in northern Europe. It covers over eight percent of the country and as with most glaciers in this extremely geologically volatile country, there are several volcanoes under its ice cap.
Reykjavik and Akureyri The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik is filled with museums, art and gourmet cuisine and sits on the doorstep of the many natural wonders that beckon guests into the wilds of the country. We've made sure that you'll have plenty of time to explore this quirky city fully. Cruising into the harbour of Akureyri is one of the loveliest arrivals to be had on this itinerary. With its brightly coloured houses, snow-capped mountain backdrop and welcoming atmosphere, this is a wonderful place to spend time in.

Natural wonders There are few other places on Earth where you'll feel closer to the power of nature. From volcanic wonders to crystalline glaciers, wild windswept coastlines to vast plains, Iceland provides an untold number of opportunities to explore via e-bike, kayak, Zodiac, helicopter or submarine*. Kayak off the coast of Akureyi or soar high over a glacier in our helicopter* – there's no limit to what you can discover during your time on this island. Explore Vatnajökull National Park with its glacial namesake or Snæfellsjökull National Park with its 700,000-year-old stratovolcano mountain. The mountain was made famous by the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, in which the protagonists find the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth on Snæfellsjökull.
Scenic°
Wild Iceland Bird-spotting is one of the great sports in Iceland and we take you to two of the best locations, Látrabjarg Cliffs and Heimaey Island. Látrabjarg hosts up to forty percent of the world’s bird population for some species and is vital to their survival. Heimaey is home to around eight million puffins every summer. Our Zodiac excursions will give you a birds-eye view into this ornithological playground.
Aurora Borealis Iceland offers up some of the best locations and conditions on the planet from which to view the incredible spectacle that is the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. To witness the lights you need three things: a clear dark sky away from the city lights, cold temperature and to be in town from
45
approximately late-August until MidApril. We've made sure to schedule our itinerary to tick these boxes and have even added in extra days to ensure you have as much chance as possible to witness this extraordinary natural phenomena. The vivid dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres at certain times each year.
Iceland Discovery Velkomin til slands There are few places in the world more fascinating than Iceland. This tiny island is known for its stunning volcanic beauty, mythical tales, outstanding artisans and quirky locals. Spend time in Iceland and you’ll be in its magical thrall in no time.

We're so close in our submarine that I can see the brilliant, bemused expression on its face. This great white whale has a secret. Is it that he knows he lives in the greatest place on Earth?
