13 Day Itinerary Buenos Aires > Buenos Aires

Days 1-2: Buenos Aires > Ushuaia Your journey into wonder begins in Argentina as you fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia where you will be warmly greeted by the crew as you step on board Scenic Eclipse. Settle into your handsomely appointed suite and acquaint yourself with all the facilities of your luxurious Discovery Yacht. Try on your custom designed parka and head to the mud-room to be fitted with your special polar boots. Toast the start of your voyage at the welcome cocktail reception hosted by the Captain who will introduce your expert Discovery Leader and their team. Set sail and cruise through the Beagle Channel and admire the dramatic views of the Andes mountains of Tierra del Fuego from the comfort of your private verandah.

Day 3: At sea Cruise Itinerary Highlights

At this stage in the season, the Antarctic Peninsula is full swing. It will be unlikely to have much trouble with sea ice around the usual peninsula places, though you will still find plenty of magnificent icebergs around. Many of the penguins will be finished with their chicks and moulting. The summer algal bloom of productivity, however, is well underway so food is abundant. We should see the highest abundance of whales of the season now. We’ll be surrounded by abundance everywhere we go.

Explore the most accessible and wildlife-rich region of Antarctica Daily shore visits and Zodiac cruises offer close encounters with penguins, whales, seals and sea birds Visit historic research huts and working scientific stations Cruise past massive icebergs and ancient glaciers on the ship - or more intimately from the Zodiacs The beauty of the landscapes of Antarctica are difficult to imagine. The clean air and pristine environment will affect you like no other place. Learn about Antarctica’s unique wildlife, environment and geology from our expert team Kayakers will glide through narrow sheltered waterways and fjords, paddle among ice floes and drift quietly alongside wildlife.

options, or a butler will serve you as you dine in-suite. The first sightings of icebergs and snow-capped mountains signal that you have reached the Antarctic Peninsula.

Days 4-10: Antarctica

To book call 1 866 689 8611 | Visit sceniceclipse.com | Contact your nearest travel agent10 Relax and enjoy the amazing facilities of your floating resort as you cruise towards the Antarctic Peninsula. An entertaining presentation by the Discovery Team in the state-of-the-art theatre will excite you for what’s to come, or relax in your suite and watch the live streaming on your TV. Your palate will be delighted as you explore the extensive range of dining Depending on the weather, we may first approach Antarctica near the South Shetland Islands, perhaps entering Bransfield Strait near the western extremity of Livingston Island. A host of choices is now open to us and depending on the ice and weather conditions the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula is ours to explore. Our experienced Discovery Leaders, will use their expertise to design our voyage from day to day. This allows us to make best use of the prevailing weather and ice conditions, kayaking and unparalleled encounters with wildlife. Because we are so far south, we will experience 18-20 hours’ daylight and the days will be as busy as you wish. Once we arrive in the calmer waters of the Bransfield, Gerlache and Penola Straits and Crystal Sound, we expect to make up to two landings per day. We will use our Zodiacs (inflatable rubber boats) to get ashore and for cruising. We are always keen to explore new territory, so if the opportunity arises, we will.

At this time of the summer the waters are rich with krill and so we are hopeful of seeing whales, particularly humpbacks and minkes. If ice conditions allow, we will try to travel south through the narrow twisting channel called The Gullet. Some of the places we may visit to view spectacular wildlife, visit historic sites or cruise icebergs and glaciers are:

Other places we may visit around the Antarctic Peninsula are: Robert Point A fine example of the South Shetland Islands – a tiny toe of land that is literally alive with wildlife. Here we will find two species of penguins breeding, chinstraps and gentoos. It is not uncommon to find wallows of elephant seals that are 40 beasts strong. Giant petrels nest on the ridgeline. The vegetation consists of mosses, lichens and the only grass species that grows in Antarctica. All this is set against a stunning backdrop of mountains and glaciers of the surrounding islands.

Half Moon Island A wildlife rich island tucked into a neat bay at the eastern end of Livingston Island. On a clear day the glaciers and mountains of Livingston Island dominate the scene. There is a large chinstrap penguin rookery tucked in between basaltic turrets coloured by yellow and orange lichens. Gulls nest on these turrets and there are often fur seals and elephant seals hauled out on the pebble beaches. At one extremity of the island there is a large colony of nesting blue-eyed shags. At the other end lies a small Argentine station that is sometimes occupied by scientists conducting research on the penguin colony and surrounding waterways.

Deception Island Visiting Deception Island is like making a journey to the moon. We sail through the narrow opening of Neptune’s Bellows to enter the flooded volcanic crater. Inside is an unworldly scene, virtually devoid of life. Glaciers flow down from the edge of the crater, littered by black volcanic ash. We can explore the lifeless remains of a derelict whaling station and a vacant British base, or climb to the rim of the crater at Neptune’s Window

Paradise Harbour A protected bay surrounded by magnificent peaks and spectacular glaciers, the rocky cliffs of this unforgettable piece of heaven provide excellent nesting sites for blue-eyed shags, terns and gulls. The serenity of Paradise Harbour envelops us once the sound of the dropping anchor fades from our ears. This is a haven for whales and we keep our eyes open for humpbacks, orcas and minkes, as well as crabeater seals, as we explore the bay in Zodiacs.

Lemaire Channel Quietly moving through the narrow Lemaire Channel may be one of the highlights of our voyage. Cliffs tower 700 metres above the ship. The water can be so still that perfect reflections are mirrored on the surface. Gigantic icebergs can clog the channel, creating navigational challenges for our captain and crew; occasionally they may even obstruct our passage.

Port Lockroy/Jougla Point Tucked into a sheltered bay, Port Lockroy has a long history of ship-based whaling, then it became the site of a small British Base during WWII. Their mission was to report on weather conditions and keep their eyes open for German shipping. The Base was converted to a research station after the war until the late 1960s. Now it stands as a fantastic museum that allows us to experience what it was like to live on an Antarctic station 50 years ago.

Days 11-12: At sea

Day 13: Buenos Aires Disembark after breakfast, taking away memories of a truly unforgettable cruise.

12 Day Itinerary Reykjavík > Copenhagen

Day 1: Reykjavik Your journey into wonder begins in the Icelandic capital, where you will embark Scenic Eclipse. This extraordinary voyage of the world’s largest island promises harmony, tranquillity and remoteness, unique to this spectacular environment. Nature lovers and those who love the thrill of exploration will be truly captivated by every day on this magnificent and unusual adventure.

Day 2: Snaefellsnes Peninsula Rarely visited due to its isolation, the Westfjords of Iceland are a unique and particularly beautiful part of the country. One of the biggest draws to the area is the Dynjandi group of waterfalls, a total of seven falls dramatically spilling over one hundred metres as if one. Dynjandi, which translates from Icelandic as ‘thunderous’, is one of them and, aside from its size and natural beauty, the remoteness of this waterfall is what makes it special. A true sight to behold.

Featured Scenic Discovery activity With a flexible itinerary and depending on the conditions, take Scenic Discovery excursions by kayak or onshore for landings.

Day 3: At sea

Spend the day crossing the iceberg-laden Denmark Strait, which connects the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Meet some of your fellow explorers and immerse yourself in the on board lectures by the Discovery Team.

Days 4-6: East Coast Fjords Over the next two days, your adventure will vary depending upon ice and weather conditions, which vary from season to season. Conditions permitting, you will visit several sites, including Køge Bugt, where the Greenland Ice Cap reaches the sea and impressive large tabular icebergs drift. Weather permitting, we will reach Umivik, the site where 19th century Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen started his epic exploration of the Greenland Ice Cap.

Skjoldungen Fjord The wild, rugged and ice-packed fjords of Greenland’s southeastern coast beckon your attention as we begin our exploration of the Skjoldungen Sound. Surrounded by astonishing mountains, spectacular glaciers and undisturbed wildlife, it is a place the native Inuits call Kalaallit Nunaat or Land of the People. Today, we’ll take full advantage of our positioning at the top of the Skjoldungen Fjord and take our Zodiacs ashore with our knowledgeable expedition staff, who will help you discover this natural spectacle. Skjoldungen Island is home to some of Greenland’s most spectacular views. On Greenland’s southern tip is Cape Farewell, a very dangerous corner, which has seen many ships sink due to the unpredictable currents and icebergs. Historically, explorers searched for a less dangerous alternative route, before discovering the Prinz Christian Sund Passage, wide enough for most ships to sail through. At approximately 130 kilometres-long and 450 metres wide, at its narrowest point, you may pass several glacial runners.

Featured Scenic Discovery activity Take Scenic Discovery excursions by Zodiac to view ice formations, paddle the kayaks to hear the ice cracking or step onshore for landings.

Day 7: Narsaq Narsaq, meaning ‘the plain’ in Greenlandic, is a stunning agricultural town often referred to as the Pearl of Greenland. Located deep in a fjord system, with a gentle sub-Arctic climate, the deep green valleys present an astonishing contrast to the blue-green icebergs passing by, and you may even be able to spot the Greenland Ice Cap from here. Its geology is world-famous, with rare minerals found here that are unique to Narsaq.

Featured Scenic Discovery activity Take a Scenic Discovery excursion by Zodiac or kayak, or take a hiking tour.

Day 8: Nuuk Nuuk, translating as ‘The Cape’, is an accurate name in terms of the location of Greenland’s capital, situated on the tip of a large peninsula at the mouth of the spectacular Godthaab Fjord system. With some 14.000 inhabitants, it is by far the largest town in Greenland, as well as the oldest, founded in 1728 by “the apostle of Greenland” Hans Egede, a Danish-Norwegian missionary. A curious mix of a traditional Greenlandic town and a modern small capital, the Old Harbour with its 19th century buildings and local markets, selling the day’s local catch, is within walking distance of the modern town centre.

Day 9: Evighedsfjorden Day 11: Kangerlussuaq Fjord

Today, we’ll cruise into the picturesque 190-kilometre Kangerlussuaq Fjord, which flows from the estuary of Qinnguata Kuussua river, to the southwest, and empties into the Davis Strait.

Day 12: Kangerlussuaq > Copenhagen Kangerlussuaq, meaning ‘the long fjord’, is a former US airbase, where animal life is abundant with wild caribou and musk oxen calling it home. After docking here, you’ll say your goodbyes to your crew on board Scenic Eclipse as you disembark after breakfast for your flight home.

EARLYBIRD FARES *

The fjords in this area can reach close to a kilometre (over half a mile) of depth and are lined with tidewater glaciers from the Maniitsoq ice sheet located high up in the interior of Greenland. Some of the cliffs along the fjords of this region can exceed 2,000 metres (6,600ft) in height.

Featured Scenic Freechoice activity Marvel at the mummies in the Greenland National Museum, or try the local Greenlandic beer at Greenland’s largest microbrewery. Alternatively, learn about Inuit culture at the Nuuk Art Museum.

Day 10: Ilulissat & Disko Bay Beautifully situated at the mouth of the 40-kilometre ice fjord filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, Ilulissat, meaning iceberg in Greenlandic, is the apt name for the beautiful coastal town recognised for its ice fjord and bergs of Disko Bay. In 2004, its unique glaciology and unsurpassed natural splendour was awarded a World Heritage status. 4,500 people live in Ilulissat, and with them, thousands of sled dogs. This is an eloquent statement of the importance of the dog sled as a means of transport, even in a large modern town. The harbour is full of fishing vessels and trawlers that all bear witness to the great importance of fishing to the town. Just a few kilometres away from the town, you’ll find the archaeological site of Sermermiut valley that extends down to the ice fjord. Three hundred years ago, this was the site of Greenland’s largest settlement, then 250 people. Later, excavations have shown that the beautiful valley has actually been inhabited for thousands of years
