Diverse delights
South Georgia Island is one of the most unique and important biodiverse environments on Earth and is the perfect addition to your time in Antarctica.
South Georgia has as much biodiversity as the famous Galápagos Islands. Researchers have discovered 1,445 marine species living in South Georgia’s coastal waters. Curious creatures like free-swimming sea worms, icefish and sea spiders can be found here. The dominant species are the penguin populations along South Georgia’s shores, while 90 percent of the world’s fur seals use the island as a base, as do about half of the Earth’s population of elephant seals.

Learn about the incredible Ernest Shackleton’s great heroics, the legacy of the whaling industry and the careful work that has been done to rejuvenate this environmentally precious corner of the world. One of the world’s great explorers, Ernest Shackleton is renowned as the man who went way beyond the horizon to discover new points on the map. In 1915, on his third Antarctic expedition, his ship ‘Endurance’ became trapped in the ice, and 10 months

later sank. Shackleton set out to find help, eventually arriving on South Georgia Island. His experiences and research changed the face of Antarctic exploration forever. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the resting place of this truly great man at Grytviken in South Georgia.
