Wonder is a personal emotion, it’s about the heart and the mind, joy, surprise, curiosity and awe. Wonder can be a whole day or a fleeting moment. Travel is about more than distance. It offers us not just a journey across the world to see new sights but to the heart of what it means to be human. It allows us to step outside our normal parameters and become enriched by what we encounter. It presents us with limitless possibilities to become more than we were before. At Scenic we celebrate the art of wonder through travel. Our aim is to elevate your trip from a mere holiday into a journey of discovery. Never lose your sense of wonder.

History and art never fail to surprise in northern France Northern France is an area of considerable contradiction: steeped in epic war history, it’s also home to momentous artwork and is a place of staggering beauty.
A Monet’s home, Giverny
The river Seine – the same tranquil waterway that bisects Paris – empties into the English Channel at Honfleur, in the north of the country. To experience the diversity of this region is one of life’s great pleasures that will leave you with lasting memories for years to come.
A trove of spectacular art The Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts) in Rouen is home to some of the most celebrated examples of European art, spanning the 16th to 20th centuries. Impressionist art is particularly well represented here, with signature works by Degas, Renoir, Monet and Pissarro on display. If Impressionist art gives you particular joy, don’t miss a visit to Claude Monet’s residence and gardens at Giverny. The celebrated artist lived here for 43 years, from 1883 until his death in 1926.
Scenic°
The inspiration for much of his work with colour and light can be seen in the stunning gardens that he meticulously maintained. “Beyond painting and gardening, I am good for nothing”, the artist once said. And thanks to impressive conservation efforts by the foundation created in his memory, the gardens at Giverny are maintained year-round. You'll also have the opportunity to visit the museum of famed French novelist, Victor Hugo in the village of Villequier. Author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, he is a national treasure. A visit made even more special with a cycle through sleepy riverside villages. The architecture of Vicomte Palace is also a work of art in itself. Wander the halls and gardens of this great palace, the inspiration for Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles.
33
Local apple brandy by the sea There’s something both spellbinding and exciting about reaching the point where a great river meets the sea. Where the historic river Seine opens into the Atlantic at the English Channel, it feels appropriate to mark the occasion with a celebratory event. We have created an exclusive experience for Scenic guests, to enjoy a locally produced specialty brandy in situ at its distillery overlooking the Atlantic coast. Calvados is an apple brandy made in the Calvados region of Lower Normandy, and you can enjoy a tasting of this local spirit at the splendid estate of Manoir d’Apreval. With views that stretch to the English Channel in the near distance across flowering apple trees and rich green pastures that roll to the water’s edge, it’s an unforgettable setting in which to enjoy a late afternoon aperitif.

It’s a revelation that these solemn sites are in such close proximity to the beauty of the art and architecture that survived.

Somme battlefields and Normandy beaches A sobering counterpoint to the triumph of Monet’s art and the beauty of orchards and classic architecture is the reminder that hundreds of thousands of lives were lost on the World War I battlefields of the Somme and Normandy’s D-Day landing beaches of WWII. These memorial areas are well preserved in respectful commemoration of the astonishing loss of human life the battles represented. Between July and November 1916, the Somme battles claimed the lives of, or wounded, more than one million young men. 2016 marks 100 years since this battle took place, and a visit to the memorials provides an opportunity to reflect.
A Somme battlefield memorial B Mulberry Harbour, Normandy
Not far from the Somme battlefields, are the beaches of Normandy, part of Hitler’s
Scenic°
'Atlantic Wall' on France’s northern coast. These beaches were the location of the extraordinary Allied beach landings on 6 June 1944. More than 4,000 Allied ships successfully landed on that day, which played a dramatic role in turning the tide of the war. The informative Landing Museum at Arromanches Beach overlooks the cloudy sea below dotted with remnants of Mulberry Harbour – a portable artificial harbour constructed to rapidly unload cargo onto the beaches during the Allied invasion of Normandy. For the history or cultural enthusiast, a visit to this part of France is both humbling and deeply rewarding.
Joan of Arc English medieval history is closely linked to Rouen. William the Conqueror often held court here. Richard the Lionheart was crowned Duke of Normandy in
35
town, and left his heart to the city… as would Joan of Arc -against her will. The inspiration for a series of victories against the English army south along the Loire, Joan was captured and tried for witchcraft and heresy in English-ruled Rouen in 1431, ending up on the funeral pyre at just 19 years of age. Visit the new museum in honour of Joan housed in the Archbishop's Palace, just next to the Cathedral.

Benedictine Palace France is an enthralling country to visit, particularly if you enjoy your wines and liqueurs. Here you’ll have the chance to taste some of the world’s most notable beverages in the very places they were created, often centuries ago. The aweinspiring beauty of these locations and architecture are additional pleasures to be enjoyed. This is certainly the case with the Benedictine Palace. Using 27 different plants and spices, Benedictine is a liqueur created in the Benedictine Palace in Fécamp, on the dramatic Alabaster Coast. At an exclusive Scenic Enrich experience, you can enjoy tasting this popular liqueur in the place of its creation by monk Dom Bernardo Vincelli more than five centuries ago. The palace – with rooms in the neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles – is a spectacular setting for

an evening of fine dining and exquisite musical entertainment in Abbots' Hall. Northern France is a gem waiting to be discovered. A trove of surprises, beautiful twists and unexpected turns, you have the opportunity to learn about its regional history and art, thanks to the dedicated conservation efforts of hundreds of individuals. Adding to this sense of wonder, will be individual moments of discovery you'll treasure forever.
Alabaster Coast The Alabaster Coast, is a striking stretch of the Normandy coastline made of magnificent white chalk cliffs and pebble beaches. Geologically similar to the cliffs at Dover in England, the area has provided writers and artists, especially the impressionists, with great inspiration. Artists such as Monet
