EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to our Fall & Winter edition of Wonder Magazine. In this issue of Wonder Magazine we’re proud to share the enhancements we’ve made to our Scenic Spirit Space-Ship travelling on the Mekong River in South East Asia. If you’ve never been to this exotic region, we encourage you to explore the majestic and mystical Irrawaddy River with author and travel writer Julie Miller, as she reveals her recent experience in Myanmar. Scenic Emerald guests, Brian and Sue de Bruyn share an unforgettable experience on their recent 20 Day Essence of Egypt and Jordan Tour & Cruise. Enjoy photos and highlights from their adventure back in time to the cradle of civilization. And last, but certainly not least, we’re pleased to share our latest Scenic Eclipse Voyages and Escorted Land Journeys brochures. Across our 2019/2020 collection of hand-crafted itineraries, we have all-inclusive 6-star luxury cruise offerings and land-cruise combinations that will create an experience like no other.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Wonder Magazine and are inspired to experience another luxurious adventure with Scenic. The Scenic Team

SUPPORTING CLEAN WATER INITIATIVES IN ASIA
We’re making great steps toward a greener future. We’ve eliminated the use of single-use plastic bottles and straws on board our ships. Our goal is to ensure we do our part in preserving the environments we visit. We’ve also partnered with local programs who collect waste and have already funded two clean water projects in the community. PAGE 4
1. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France Named after its engineer Gustave Eiffel, it has become the symbol of Paris and a symbol of love – which is apt as it stands in the world’s most romantic city.

CRUISE EUROPE all year round
The best time to visit Europe depends on where you’re headed, so here’s a snapshot of some of the best cities and when to explore them.
SPRING
SUMMER
AUTUMN
LYON
ST. PETERSBURG
PARIS
Lyon in spring is all about the gardens. Explore the countryside on bike and by foot and wander among the beautiful flowers and trees. A picnic in the park with a spread of cheese, wine and strawberries is the perfect way to enjoy a spring afternoon in this beautiful French city.
The city of ‘White Nights’, this time of year brings people from near and far to enjoy the city that doesn’t sleep. By day, indulge in some delectable Russian ice cream as you stroll the parks and streets, then head to one of the daily ballets, operas or concerts at the classical halls.
Not only is Paris a little less crowded in autumn, nature is at its prettiest. Like a watercolour painting, red, yellow and orange leaves scatter parks across the city and while it might be a little chilly to hang out in the park, you’ll still comfortably enjoy the outdoor terraces.
BUCHAREST
BORDEAUX
PORTUGAL
Bucharest stands proudly on the banks of the Dambovita River and its charm is undeniable. As the capital and heart of Romania, this energetic and dynamic city is layered in history and elegant architecture.
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the open roads, countryside and vineyards with a glass of local wine and a French sunset, that will be a lasting memory.
Sunny days that aren’t too hot, fewer crowds and greener pastures. Enjoy the beauty of the Douro Valley where timeless villages, terraced landscapes and hilltop wine estates capture the attention.
AMSTERDAM
With vineyards, fairytale-like villages and rolling hills, the Moselle Valley has all the right ingredients for a romantic summer holiday.
Everywhere you turn in Amsterdam this time of year, you’ll be wooed by the beauty of tulips. One of the Netherlands’ biggest draws, these flowers are a sight that needs to be seen to be truly appreciated. Enjoy the world famous flower strip and tiptoe through Amsterdam’s annual Tulip Festival every April.

BUDAPEST You might be drawn to the sun-splashed summer days, but Budapest is just as beautiful, if not more so, in the autumn months. Bathe in the thermal spas scattered throughout the city or take a dip in the open air pool.

Christmas markets, Strasbourg
“Not only is Paris a little less crowded in autumn, nature is at its prettiest.” Amsterdam
WINTER STRASBOURG A contradiction in itself, Strasbourg in France is a fusion of medieval and contemporary making it an amazing and unpredictable city. It is most beautiful at Christmas time when wooden huts pop up in town centres with various styles of Christmas markets, including France’s oldest Christmas market founded in 1570.

On board art Introducing you to the spectacular local art featured on our 5-star boutique ship, Scenic Spirit.
some of the most popular Vietnamese artists of recent times, with a gallery of artwork adorning the walls and hallways of its ship sailing the Mekong River. Scenic Spirit, adding a rich element of colour, life and vibrancy to the interior décor of the ship.
Contemporary South East Asian art has begun to establish a real place in the mainstream art scene – with Vietnam being one of the first Asian countries to really do so – and it is known for its vibrant colours and intricate detail.
Hand selected, the art collection reflects the landscapes and people of the Mekong and the rich kaleidoscope of colours, culture and traditions that is Vietnam.
Scenic has taken this boom in earnest and has curated a stunning visual display of
In Vu Cong Dien’s romanticsurrealist landscape paintings, trees and plants are the protagonists. The reason why he only focuses on these subject matters is because the artist is always mesmerised by their beauty and the sentiment they exude. Whenever he draws trees and plants, Vu Cong Dien’s soul and mind are taken to a deep ocean with thoughts and philosophy about this life.
Than Trong Dung was born in Da Nang in 1968 and began his painting career after he graduated from Hue Fine Art University in 1992. He paints to express his emotions for his motherland “where has golden sunlight and cool winds in summer, life of poor people in fishing village and the beautiful sense of his home”. Dominating his canvases is the repetition of plentiful blooming lotus interwoven with enormous leaves, which seemingly evoke a sense of tranquility and absolute bliss. On closer inspection, Than Trong Dung’s paintings take viewers on a ride to a fantasy land in which horror vacui – fear of empty spaces is well practiced.
Vu Cong Dien was born in 1975 and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 2005. He has only been on the professional scene for a few years yet his works are already in high demand in Europe, Australia, the US and Japan. Dien brings a fresh approach to his landscapes often using color in unusual combinations. At other times, he uses mono and dichromatic colour schemes to achieve a sense of tranquility and peace.
Nguyen Trung is one of the most influential and prominent artists in Vietnam today. His works can be seen in the Fine Arts Museum in Vietnam, the National Museum of Singapore and in many private collections both in Vietnam and abroad. He is one of the few Vietnamese artists whose works are sold in international auctions. Trung brought onto his colourful canvas the delicate and elegant image of a young Vietnamese lady. Even though his subject matter is depicted to have rather stiff body language together with a bold choice of highly pigmented colours, from her exudes not only pure charm, but also mysterious calmness.

Mesmerising
MYANMAR
Cruising the Irrawaddy River provides an opportunity to visit a remarkable shrine. Author and travel writer Julie Miller reveals her recent spiritual experience in Myanmar.
A
I'm making a silent contract with an ogre queen in a shrine on Mount Popa, Myanmar. If the goddess grants my wish – to find my soulmate – I promise to help clean up her beloved countryside, whether by donation or physical action. I think it's a fair deal – after all, we could both do with a little help. According to Tu Tu, our Scenic Tour Director, on this Scenic Freechoice excursion from a Scenic cruise along the Irrawaddy River, I'm in with a shot. Several years ago, Tu Tu made a deal with the goddess Mae Wunna and met her future husband two weeks later. Mount Popa, meaning ‘flower’ in Sanskrit, is an extinct volcano rising 1,518 metres above sea level. The centrepiece is a dramatic basalt plug topped with a gilded temple and monastery, looming above the jungle like a fairytale castle. It’s said to be home to the most powerful ‘nats’, the spirits of heroic ancestors. Today, Buddhists such as Tu Tu flock to the shrine, handing promises and money to the 37 nats represented in the pantheon. Mae Wunna had her own love story, albeit a Romeo and Juliet tragedy. According to legend, she was a flower-eating ogress who lived a solitary life on the volcano. One day, she fell in love with an Indian Muslim servant, Byatta, sent by King Anawrahta – founder of the Bagan empire in the 11th century – to fetch flowers. When the king heard of their forbidden union, he had Byatta executed, and Mae Wunna died of a broken heart. Fortunately, the lovers – and their sons, who were also executed – were resurrected as nats, and
now dwell on top of the mountain. The repentant king ended up worshipping them, marking the start of the relationship between Buddhists and animism. My contract with the Queen of the Mountain locked in, we begin our ascent up the 777 stairs to the peak. The passageway is fetid with the sweat of pilgrims squeezing past vendors selling toys, souvenirs, noodles and bottled yellow blossoms, called champac, which are given as an offering to the nats. After 200 steps, we must remove our shoes and climb barefoot, dodging poo and lentils dropped by mangy macaques that threaten to steal sunglasses and hats from passers-by; fortunately, most of the cheeky primates are having a siesta. Finally, we emerge sweating on the pagoda’s scalding tiles, hip-hopping to a shady patch to photograph the astounding 360-degree views of the valley, shimmering Irrawaddy and spires of distant Bagan, where our cruise ship, Scenic Aura, is docked. Later, over a Burmese-style feast at Mount Popa Resort, we gaze back at the gilded

monastery, chuffed and a little astounded by our climb to the top. As we depart the resort, I bend down to pick up a plastic water bottle, discarding it in one of the few bins I've seen in Myanmar. After all, I have a promise to uphold, and this is evidence of my commitment. Watch this space to see if Mae Wunna rewards my diligence.

EGYPTIAN JOURNEY Scenic Emerald guests, Brian and Sue de Bruyn share their bucket list experience in Egypt and Jordan
A
B
When Sue and I attended a Scenic event in Brisbane late last year and Glen Moroney announced that Scenic was returning to the Middle East, we couldn’t contain our excitement. This was a destination high on our must do list and one that we had feared may never happen. We have recently returned from the 20 Day Essence of Egypt and Jordan Tour & Cruise and can honestly say it was everything we had hoped for A Abu Simbel, Egypt B Brian and Sue de Bruyn, Saqqara, Egypt C Nile cruise on board Sanctuary Sun Boat III, Egypt

and delivered one of the most outstanding experiences of our travel life. So why was that? Was it the stunning Pyramids, the vast array of antiquities, the ancient ruins, the amazing hieroglyphics and artwork in the Tombs of the Pharaohs or was it the stunning red landscapes of Wadi Rum and Petra. Of course these are just some of the things that we as travellers expected to see and here they were, in endless abundance and amazing detail, right in front of us. Seeing these incredible sights in person is another level of wonder

majestic rooms and gardens of the Winter Palace in Luxor and the iconic history that reflects such famous people as Agatha Christie and Winston Churchill at the Old Cataract Hotel with its picture perfect views across the Nile at Aswan. Along with these beautiful historic venues, and the added luxury of our Nile River cruise on the Sanctuary Sunboat III we were also surprised at the extent of our pampered luxury at Aquaba Red Sea resort.

that has to be experienced firsthand which ensures the experience will remain with us for the rest of our days. But it would be wrong to think that Egypt and Jordan were just about their unique architectural structures, landscapes and ancient history. There was much more. For example, our accommodation on tour was as much a part of the touring experience as were the structures. There were the stunning views of the Pyramids from our room at the Mena House in Giza, the
Like any tour though, it’s the people who can make a difference, and in Egypt and Jordan, this was another high point. When local people speak highly about Scenic, we as travellers can only feel humbled that they genuinely appreciated us being there. Many asked us to promote their countries on our return home and we can certainly confirm that we felt safe and well looked after at all times. Tourism is so important to the communities of these countries and we always felt welcome. But any tour wouldn’t be complete without one very important ingredient and that’s having fun. Sue and I will never forget the all in mud massage on the shores of the Dead Sea, and the unusual feeling of floating in its warm therapeutic waters. The laughter of our fellow travellers as we lathered up with mud and the brilliant hospitality of the local Hilton staff in making our stay so enjoyable and memorable stands out as another amazing highlight. This tour had everything – stunning landscapes, significant architecture, amazing people, luxurious accommodation and so much more. It was truly a wonderful experience, one that we believe all travellers should one day experience.
