SCENIC RIM HERITAGE NETWORK ARTS & CULTURE

The Scenic Rim region is rich in history and is home to a number of fascinating and well-resourced museums, which play a key role in preserving our region’s cultural heritage. The Scenic Rim Heritage Network (SRHN) is open to community museums and heritage groups and is supported by Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Heritage Project Officer and a Queensland Museums Officer. It includes historical villages and museums that chart the progress and development of architecture, farming techniques, living arrangements, politics and major events throughout the Scenic Rim. Meetings of the SRHN are held quarterly at museums around the region. The network has been instrumental in developing signage for our Vibrant Towns and Villages project, to create a sense of place in our communities, and is working on the development of heritage trails across the region. NATIVE BEE KEEPING WORKSHOPS

Catch the Buzz around keeping native bees

BOONAH

15 Jan

10am - 4pm TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN Check the website for information

Entomologist and former Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation research scientist Dr Tim Heard and the Sugarbag Bees team will present two workshops in early 2020 on keeping native bees.

Populations of native bees can be threatened by land clearing and pesticide use and Dr Heard has been keeping Australian native stingless bees since 1985, when he transferred his first hive from a cut-down tree into a wooden box.

Australian native bees are distinctly different from honey bees and these workshops at Tamborine Mountain and Boonah will be abuzz with information on these small but largely important pollinators of Australia’s wildflowers, which also make a vital contribution to agriculture through crop pollination.

He now keeps more than 400 hives, obtained through rescuing threatened wild hives and splitting existing hives and continues to develop new hive designs and techniques that allow better splitting and extraction of sugarbag and wax.

Wed 15 Jan 2020 10am-4pm The Outlook Boonah 4001 Ipswich-Boonah Road, Boonah

These one-day workshops cover all aspects of keeping native bees, from hives to honey extraction.

Tamborine Mountain Details to be confirmed. Bookings are essential. Places are limited.

Dr Heard has been giving seminars and workshops on native bees since 1995.

Workshops run from 10am to 4pm and include morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea - with the added sweetener of ice-cream with native bee honey. These events are run by Scenic Rim Regional Council for local residents.

Please register at eventbrite.com.au and search for Our Native Pollinators or, for more information, visit www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/whatson or call Council on 07 5540 5111. scenicrim.qld.gov.au

ENVIRONMENT ENVIRONMENT

These are held at our Council libraries, centres and other natural areas and include a range of free or low cost classes and workshops Visit the website for more information www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au

NATIVE BEE KEEPING WORKSHOPS WED 15 JAN 10am - 4pm

The Outlook 4001 Ipswich-Boonah Road, Boonah DETAILS TO BE CONFIRMED

Tamborine Mountain

Catch the buzz around keeping native bees Entomologist and former Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation research scientist Dr Tim Heard and the Sugarbag Bees team will present two workshops in early 2020 on keeping native bees. Australian native bees are distinctly different from honey bees and these workshops at Tamborine Mountain and Boonah will be abuzz with information on these small but largely important pollinators of Australia’s wildflowers which also make a vital contribution to agriculture through crop pollination. Populations of native bees can be threatened by land clearing and pesticide use and Dr Heard has been keeping Australian native stingless bees since 1985, when he transferred his first hive from a cutdown tree into a wooden box.

OWL WHISPERER WORKSHOPS SAT 21 MAR 9am - 11am

These one-day workshops cover all aspects of keeping native bees, from hives to honey extraction.

Tamborine Library

Workshops run from 10am to 4pm and include morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea - with the added sweetener of ice-cream with native bee honey.

Beaudesert Library

These events are run by Scenic Rim Regional Council for local residents. Bookings are essential as places are limited. Please register at eventbrite.com.au and search for Our Native Pollinators or, for more information, visit www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/whatson or call Council on 07 5540 5111.
