Meet some of our Arctic, Japan & Russian Far East Discovery Team experts: Jonathan Fuhrmann

Baldur Thorvaldsson

Geology, Glaciology, Lecturer, Assistant Discovery Leader

Polar Guide and Marine Mammal Lecturer

Austrian-born Jonathan Fuhrmann lived in England for 11 years where he studied Glaciology at the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. In a considered effort to impart his wisdom and raise awareness of the sciences, he worked as a science communicator at the British Antarctic Survey and the National History Museum, where he would hold talks on a range of topics from climate science and astronomy, to palaeontology, volcanology and photography. During his years working on expedition ships, he has been fortunate to visit all seven continents of the world, noting a trip to Norway for the solar eclipse as one of his favourites.

A Icelandic marine naturalist and polar guide with an MSc degree in Ecotourism, Baldur Thorvaldsson believes in sustainable and ethical wildlife tourism as a means of encouraging people to appreciate the world around them. He has completed 50 polar voyages, including an expedition to Tristan da Cunha, a remote group of volcanic islands located in the southern Atlantic Ocean. He’s guided hundreds of whale-watching tours in Iceland, Norway and the Azores and observed over 50 species of marine mammals during his incredible career. Always looking forward to his next adventure and sharing his knowledge, he found his calling working on expedition ships, where no day is the same and every day presents a new challenge.

Pepe Rojas

Dr Terence Christian

Ornithologist & Lecturer

Archaeologist, historian & Discovery Leader

Peruvian-born Pepe Rojas is an ornithologist and field researcher who has dedicated much of his life to nature and conservation. Having led many expeditions on land and sea, from the polar regions to the Amazon rainforest, his passion will be infectious as guests uncover this lesserexplored part of the world. Pepe’s love for the Arctic was instantaneous as he fell not only for the unrivalled beauty created by the landscape and light, but for the native wildlife inhabiting its limitless icescapes. He’ll guide and lookout for the Arctic fox, numerous whale species and the iconic spoonbilled sandpipers, a bird that breeds only in this part of the world as he shares his insights of the region.

Dr. Terence Christian is an archaeologist and historian specialising in Conflict Archaeology and Military History. After completing his Ph.D. in Conflict Archaeology at the University of Glasgow he went on to teach archaeology and history before serving as the military historian for the American Battlefield Protection Program. Having had a love of travel from a young age, his work as an expedition leader, guide and Zodiac driver has since enabled him to build an extensive travelling repertoire covering most of the world’s continents. And, as a qualified PTGA Polar Guide, he describes the polar regions as one of his favourite places to explore with guests, as they discover where few have ever before.

A day in a life in the Arctic The Arctic is a rare opportunity to escape into the immensity of this vast wilderness, from the majestic fjords of Norway and the Svalbard Archipelago to Greenland’s glaciers and the geology of Iceland.

Polar bear, Svalbard Archipelago

Zodiac excursions, Svalbard

PURE: Yoga and Pilates studio

Choose from up to 10 dining experiences

Helicopter flightseeing

Morning exploration Afternoon exploration

Excitement builds as you pull away from Scenic Eclipse. Its size and unique design allows you to explore places that larger vessels can’t reach. What will it be today? Perhaps a Zodiac cruise beneath the limestone cliffs of Prince Leopold Island bird sanctuary on Canada’s Northwest Passage, where millions of seabirds nest. Or land and carefully approach a walrus haulout in Spitsbergen, a Chukchi village in Siberia or thermal springs in Iceland.

It’s early as you step from your cosy Scenic Slumber Bed to your suite’s floor to ceiling window. Morning sunlight dances across rock walls. Whether in the Norwegian fjords or those of East Greenland, your butler serves a coffee of your choice as you step out onto your private verandah to breathe in pure wilderness. In the Arctic, every day brings new wonder.

Scenic Eclipse’s limited guest number means multiple landings a day. From historic hunters’ huts and reindeer in Svalbard, to Kamchatka’s coastlines alive with sea lions, otters and brown bears, to song and dance by indigenous people across the Arctic, your Discovery Team will interpret what unfolds before your eyes.

Morning

Late morning

Lunch

After a delicious breakfast, put on your complimentary polar parka and proceed to the Discovery Centre where your insulated boots await. Join your group at the Marina entrance and board a Zodiac for your morning excursion. With only 200 guests in polar regions, disembarkation goes smoothly and enables multiple landings each day.

No two excursions are alike. Your Discovery Leader are alert to changing opportunities – from beluga whales suddenly appearing, to the ‘crack!’ of glacier fronts calving – flexible enough to get you there. Monitoring weather, sea state and ice, they will safely guide and share their insights into the region’s environment. Given the range of on-board expertise, our Discovery Team can tailor each excursion to your interests.

By midday, return to your ultraluxury Discovery Yacht. Choose lunch at one of several dining experiences, from casual Azure Bar & Cafe to Yacht Club’s grill, to contemporary fine dining. While you eat, rest and admire the views, Scenic Eclipse repositions to a new location for another excursion, holding its place using its GPS Dynamic Positioning System, without dropping anchor onto sensitive seabeds.

After-dinner What better way to finish the day than with a nightcap in one of our all-inclusive nine bars and lounges, as the Midnight Sun highlights wildflower patches in tundra meadows nearby.

Afternoon rejuvenation Back on Scenic Eclipse, visit our expansive 550m2 Senses Spa for the pure indulgence of rejuvenating treatments, soak in our Vitality Spa or outdoor pool, or stretch tightening muscles in our POWER: gym, or PURE: Yoga and Pilates studio. Join your Discovery Leader for an illustrated recap of the day and learn what is planned for the next.

Discover the Arctic Region

Seasonal Guide

C

Antarctica is a continent surrounded by ocean, the Arctic an ocean surrounded by continents – and you can explore them all on our ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht Scenic Eclipse. The European continent, enjoys Norwegian fjords and photogenic fishing villages; Svalbard’s colourful tundra, reindeer, polar bears and walrus; Greenland’s spectacular icebergs and glacier-carved valleys, musk ox and paleo-Eskimo camps. Discover Iceland’s aweinspiring waterfalls, Viking heritage, evocative volcanic landscapes and rejuvenating thermal pools.

D

The North American continent includes Canada’s historic Northwest Passage, first navigated successfully by Roald Amundsen, with towering seabird cliffs, pods of ghostly beluga whales and the rare chance to see narwhals. Transit through Bering Strait to Alaska’s mountainous coast and share British Columbia’s Inside Passage with breaching humpbacks. Explore the Asian continent and discover the Russian Far East, including the Kurils, an island chain of volcanoes, incredible sea stacks, millions of seabirds and pods of orcas, stretching from Japan to Kamchatka Peninsula. The Pacific Ring of Fire continues north along Kamchatka’s magnificent coastline, where brown bears and Steller’s sea eagles feed on salmon and beaches echo with the roar of sea lions.

B

Chukotka forms the northwest corner of Asia, a wilderness of captivating beauty, where Chukchi reindeer herders bring their herds to the coast to sip seawater, bears climb cliffs to steal seabird eggs, and protected bays resound with the blows of bowhead, grey, humpback and orca whales. E

A W ildflowers in bloom, Midsummer B P olar bear and cub emerging from den, Early Summer C Bearded seals, Midsummer D Humpback whales bubble feeding, Late Summer E Walruses on pack ice, Late Summer

Across the top of the Asian continent is the legendary Northeast Passage, until recently the domain of nuclear-powered icebreakers most of the year, but thanks to climate change, can be ice-free in summer. From Wrangel Island, the world’s highest density of polar bear dens, traverse the Arctic Ocean, setting foot in places few have visited such as the Medvedie and Novosibirskie Islands, Severnaya and Novaya Zemlyas and Franz Joseph Land. These wild places, inhabited by polar bears, walrus, seabirds like tufted puffins and rhinoceros auklets, and Russian scientists living in weather-worn stations left over from the Cold War. No matter which continent you choose, another significant difference between Antarctic and the Arctic are the polar bears. Marine mammals spend most of their lives on Arctic Ocean sea ice, hunting seals, walrus, even whales in the frigid waters and come ashore to give birth to their cubs.

Whenever we enter Ice Bear’s domain, your expert Discovery Team expedition leader carry bear deterrents ranging from rifles and flare pistols to pepper spray (depending on local regulations). Landing areas will be carefully marked with flags showing the limits where you can go. Your safety is our priority. As well as Arctic destinations, here are some seasonal highlights to help you decide which voyage to choose:

Early Summer June – Early July On seabird cliffs of Norway, Kuril Islands and Kamchatka, puffins, gannets and guillemots feed chicks. Humpback whales follow the Gulf Stream north along the Norwegian coast, while fast ice breaks out of the deeper fjords. Snow free areas across the Arctic attract migratory birds, and polar bears and cubs emerge from dens.

Midsummer Mid July – Early August Millions of migratory birds fill flyways in Europe, North America and Asia. Seabird cliffs are noisy with growing chicks. Algal blooms attract ringed, bearded and harp seals. On Wrangel Island and across Canada, polar bears teach cubs to hunt. Spectacular Arctic wildflowers bloom and walrus crowd ice floes as polar bears stalk seals in pack ice around Svalbard. Long days make Iceland an ideal destination for photographers.

Late Summer Mid August – Early September Open waters unlock the Northwest and Northeast Passages, with access to polar bears hunting seals and walrus in pack ice. Narwhals begin to gather for winter off Baffin Island. Humpback, bowhead, grey and beluga whales feed off continental coasts before migrating south. Shorebirds and seabirds complete their moult and prepare to head south. Arctic foxes scour the base of seabird cliffs in search for late-season chicks. Warm daytime temperatures encourage spectacular calving of glacier fronts, tundra walks turn up ripe berries and sunsets begin to light up the evening sky.

Discover

Svalbard Halfway between Norway and the North Pole lies an enchanting archipelago swept by warm Gulf Stream waters along its west coast; frigid pack ice from the north, polar desert winds from the east and lush sea breezes from the south.

B

A

Svalbard is so remote not even Paleo-Eskimos reached there and despite later periods of shorebased whaling, hunting, trapping, mining and scientific expeditions much remains a pristine wilderness. It’s ours to explore in ultra-luxury from our Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse. Mountainous Spitsbergen, the largest island in the archipelago, dominates Svalbard’s northwest corner. At its heart is Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest, and the world’s most northerly settlement. As perpetual summer daylight bathes surrounding mountainsides, admire Longyearbyen’s colourful houses and fascinating museums before setting sail down Isfjorden.

thus improving our chance to see more and reach places other ships can’t, including beyond 80 degrees latitude to Seven Islands, Svalbard’s northernmost island group. If ice conditions allow, thrill to a passage down Hinlopen Strait, which separates Spitsbergen from Nordaustlandet, an ice-capped polar desert where female polar bears and cubs prowl. Vegetation is sparse, but fossils are many and walrus frequently sleep on its cobbled beaches. Across the way are soaring birdcliffs that literally buzz with some 200,000 nests of Brünichs guillemots, kittiwakes and gulls. Carry binoculars to spy Arctic foxes scavenging for fallen eggs and chicks along the base.

Enjoy breathtaking scenery from your suite’s private verandah as Scenic Eclipse navigates spectacular waterways like Magdalena Fjord, and join Discovery Team specialists on Zodiac cruises along calving ice fronts of the Waggonway or 14th July glaciers. As you slowly move amongst the brash ice and bergy bits, watch for polar bears on shore and reindeer grazing on tundra hills.

C

In Kingsfjorden, we may visit Ny Ålesund, a mining town turned polar research centre, or farther north, Amsterdamoya, where our Discovery Team historian leads us to Smeerenburg (literally Blubber Town) the remains of a 17th Century Dutch whaling settlement, where walrus often haulout. Just across the channel are the ruins from the Swedish balloon expedition base camp, where Andrée and his two co-pilots launched, never to be seen alive again. Today delightful harbour seals remain to entertain. North of Spitsbergen, Scenic Eclipse aims for the Arctic pack ice, an ethereal world where walrus bob on ice floes, polar bears hunt seals and beluga whales rise in open leads. Scenic Eclipse, is built to Polar Class 6 standards and its state-of-theart design allows us to push deeper into the pack

D

On Svalbard’s south side, visit Sundneset, a fertile plain covered in green mosses and delicate flowers including the yellow marsh saxifrage, moss campion, bell-heather and elegant sunburst lichen. Round South Cape, the most southerly point of Spitsbergen, to explore the deep fjords of Hornsund and Bellsund, where reindeer graze on tundra near preserved trappers huts, puffins join guillemots on bird cliffs, and beluga whales rise like ghosts beneath ice fronts. Focus on the wonders of Svalbard in our Arctic in Depth voyage or combine it with explorations of other destinations like the Norwegian Fjords, Greenland’s stunning east coast, and the thermal wonders of Iceland. No matter which Arctic cruise you choose, travelling in 6-star ultra-luxury on the World’s First Discovery Yacht, accompanied by up to 20 Discovery Team specialists keen to share their expertise and enthusiasm for special places, will leave you with indelible memories to treasure.

Watch for the beautifully patterned great northern diver, the oldest bird species in the world, or its moreshowy relative, the red-throated diver. Greenland is host to more than 60 species of birds, so ‘twitchers’ will be well-rewarded.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is draped in the planet’s second largest ice sheet and cut by the greatest fjords on Earth. From Northeast Greenland National Park (the world’s largest) situated south along the east coast, fjord systems wind up to 350 magical, often ice-laden kilometres from the coast. Scenic Eclipse ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht is designed and built to Polar Class 6 standards, making it easy to explore these remote regions. Scenic Eclipse operates in places other ships can’t reach, like Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord early in the season. This red-rock wonderland of wind and wave sculpted icebergs offers a secret passage to Kong Oskar Fjord, where your expert Discovery Team will lead you on walks across blossoming tundra to encounter musk oxen families and pure white Arctic hare. Learn what life was like for nomadic PaleoEskimos who inhabited the region for more than 4000 years, visit Inuit hunting camps abandoned two centuries ago, but remain so

well-preserved that circular stone tent rings, winter houses, bear-proof meat caches and grave sites can still be seen. Listen as your Discovery Team historian regales you with tales of polar exploration, from Fridtjof Nansen and Otto Sverdrup’s ski crossing of the Greenland Ice Sheet in 1888, to their drift across the Arctic Ocean on board the specially designed Fram. Sverdrup’s Fram II scientific expedition, which spent four years exploring north Greenland, is an epic tale. Delight in a warm welcome to communities like remote Ittoqqortoormiit, where Inuit hunters, trappers and fishermen keep traditions alive; Narsaq, on Tunulliarfik Fjord, where Norseman Erik the Red first settled and Qaqortoq, a town of 18th-century colonial buildings and a museum featuring Greenlandic culture that is set on a bay often dotted with icebergs and lively whales. Spend time on deck relishing the flight of fulmars as they accompany our passage.

E

Greenland’s west coast is swept by warm Gulf Stream currents, offering a more temperate climate and more populous towns including the capital, Nuuk. Join our Discovery Team on a guided tour through picturesque Old Harbour, find mummies and Inuit skin boats in the Greenland National Museum and local art in the Nuuk Art Museum and Katuaq cultural centre. From Ilulissat, a small village on Disko Bay, listen to the growl and thunder of massive icebergs calved from Sermeq Kujalleq, the world’s fastest and most active glacier, to fill Ilulissat Icefjord with grinding ice castles. Or gain a close-up view of the Greenland Ice Sheet itself on an excursion from Kangerlussuaq, where the U.S. established one of several airbases during World War II. Your Discovery Team historian tells how the two countries forged stronger ties during the Cold War that continue today. Whether approaching Greenland from Svalbard or Iceland on an Arctic Islands or Exploring the High Arctic voyage, joining a Northwest Passage voyage in Greenland, with memories of wild Greenland will remain with you forever.

Your Discovery Team geologists will share their enthusiasm for the actively spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the powerful conveyor belt of volcanic activity that has raised Iceland above sea level. Listen to the roar of Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot springs, as its scalding waters are piped to houses in Borgarnes and Akranes up to 65 km away; or watch Strokkur, the country’s most famous geyser, shoot vast jets of boiling water 40 metres in the sky and you’ll understand why Jules Verne chose the glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano as the entry point to the Earth’s core in his classic novel, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Visit Húsavík, the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norse man. Swedish Viking Garðar Svavarsson stayed there for one winter around 870 A.D. and left behind a member of his party and two slaves who established the first farm. Today Húsavík is known as the ‘whale watching capital’ of Iceland. Soak and relax in geothermal sea baths with stunning views of Skjálfandi Bay and the lighthouse nearby.

Meet Chukchi reindeer herders, Inuit fishermen and Russian scientists gathering high Arctic data from roughshod dwellings sometimes shared with wolverines, snowy owls and Arctic fox. Untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age, its tundra boasts the Arctic’s greatest plant biodiversity, unchanged since mammoths made their last stand here 2000 years ago. Home to the largest population of Pacific walruses and surrounded by waters alive with bowhead, grey and beluga whales, Wrangel and nearby Herald islands host the planet’s highest concentration of polar bear dens. Over the next two weeks your Captain and Discovery Team leader will assess ice, weather and sea depth conditions to identify possible excursions each day.
