YOU’RE IN SAFE HANDS Scenic has not only designed a luxurious Discovery Yacht, but it will also be built to the highest safety standards, featuring the latest technological advancements. The ship has been specifically designed to navigate challenging seas in the utmost comfort and safety. Scenic Eclipse will utilise innovative zero speed stabiliser fins - 50% larger than standard to provide even greater stability when navigating more demanding waters. These sophisticated stabilisers, normally only found on the largest private super yachts, also work when the ship is stationary, adding further to guest comfort. Scenic Eclipse will have the highest passenger ship ice class rating – Polar Class 6 (Ice Class 1A Super), providing an added element of safety for guests. For Arctic and Antarctica cruises, passenger numbers will be limited to 200 which enables a number of landings per day for each guest.

Marion and John Smart have been travelling with Scenic for almost 10 years. They’ve embarked on epic land tours, enjoyed unforgettable cruises and even celebrated a landmark wedding anniversary during an adventure across New Zealand. We recently caught up with the Smarts to find out more about their Scenic experiences and discover just what it is that keeps them coming back. Where was the first and last destination you visited with Scenic?

B

PAGE 14

The first tour we went on was across Australia’s East Coast. We travelled from Daintree to Sydney, which included visits to the Atherton Table Lands, Whitsunday

Islands and Ayres Rock. More recently, we travelled on the incredible 21-day Eastern Explorer, Cruise and New York itinerary, which included a cruise from New York to Quebec. What is it about Scenic that draws you back in to travel with us time and time again? This is a difficult question because it’s all about fulfillment of expectation and quality Scenic deliver on both every time we travel. Have you ever cruised with any of our competitors? If so, how do our SpaceShips compare to other vessels? We’ve never cruised with the competition never felt the need, they simply don’t have the same offering that Scenic do. What do you like most about our Space-Ships? It’s a great feeling as soon as you get on board, it’s a great comfortable feeling. The staff and crew are always putting the customer first, and after a while they really get to know you so well they pre-empt your needs and preferences. Is there anywhere you haven’t travelled to with Scenic that you would like to? Or maybe you already have another holiday planned…? We have a river cruise booked in May from Amsterdam to Budapest (15-day Jewels of Europe). Two other tours are in the planning stage: one is the Russian Cruise (15-day Jewels

of Russia from Moscow to St. Petersburg) and the other is a tour of the USA that takes in Nashville and Memphis and then a cruise in the Caribbean (18-day Southern Belles & Caribbean Cruise, featured in the Australia version of our Americas brochure). We are thinking of doing this for our Golden Wedding anniversary in September 2017. What are your most cherished memories of travelling with Scenic? We would have to say that our New Zealand Tour was one of the most memorable. On that holiday we celebrated our Ruby Wedding and we met our Australian friends who we have travelled with ever since. Having said that, all our tours have given us wonderful and long lasting memories, so it’s pretty hard to pick just one!

How would you describe the Scenic offering to someone who hasn’t travelled with us before? Unashamed luxury and quality, great value for money. No tipping, no extras - it’s all paid upfront, including a variety of Scenic Freechoice activities and experiences to choose from at every destination - this is not a one size fits all tour. It’s very difficult to put this into words but once you’ve experienced a Scenic touring holiday or cruise you definitely don’t want to go with anyone else.

Freedom to see the things you want to see is important to any holiday, which is why we created Scenic Freechoice. An included, flexible programme or excursions that offer the freedom to see and do whatever you please. Here are a handful of our favourite Freechoice excursions, as featured on our Europe river cruise holidays. 1. SALZBURG EXCURSION

2. THERMAL BATHS & SPA

3. WÜRZBURG RESIDENZ

Austria

Budapest , Hungary

Würzburg, Germany

Known all around the world as the birthplace of Mozart and setting of ‘The Sound of Music’, the magical city of Salzburg is a fairy tale gem that looks like it was plucked from a fable.

Budapest has more thermal and medicinal water springs than any other capital city in the world. There are 118 springs bubbling beneath the surface of the city, providing the people of Budapest with over 70 million litres of thermal water each day.

Until the early 18th century, the PrinceBishops of Würzburg resided in Marienberg Fortress until Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn decided that they needed a more fitting abode. Using the funds he won in a court case, Johann commissioned the building of the Würzburg Residenz.

Countless spires pierce the skyline, a hilltop fortress dominates the horizon and giant mountains cloak the vistas beyond. In 1997, Salzburg’s Altstat (Old Town) became a listed World Heritage Site, and a visit to this enchanting region will see you drifting from baroque church to ornate square, dipping in and out of charming cafes and kitsch boutiques, sharing tales of you journey over a heart-warming hot chocolate. Featured on: 8-day Danube Discovery River Cruise

No visit to this city would be complete without a relaxing visit to one of the many thermal baths, and there are currently 18 open to the public. It’s not uncommon to see locals battling it out on floating chess boards and swapping stories amidst the rising steam while piles of white snow peppers the ground outside.

Featured on: 15-day Jewels of Europe River Cruise

As a Scenic guest, we invite you to embark on an insightful tour of the site, which will introduce you to the spectacular Baroque and Renaissance style interiors. After exploring the Imperial Hall, iconic staircase and White Hall, you’ll head to the Palace’s wine cellar where an exclusive wine tasting event awaits your presence. Featured on: 8-day Treasures of the Rhine River Cruise

4. SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL

5. GIVERNY

6. QUINTA AVELEDA

Vienna, Austria

France

Portugal

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world that has practiced for nearly 450 years and continues to cultivate classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole.

Welcome to the world of Claude Monet, one of the most prolific practitioners of the Impressionist movement. For over 40 years, until his death in 1926, the village of Giverny was his home, the site of his creations and the inspiration behind his many masterpieces.

Since 1870, the Aveleda has been managed and cared for by the Guedes family. As one of Portugal’s largest exporters and producers of the country’s famous Vinho Verde wine, an excursion to visit the picturesque winery will be one to cherish forever.

A visit to his home, which features the technicolour gardens immortalised in his artwork, is a must for anyone cruising the Seine. From the Japanese bridge which arcs over the lily-coated pond to the Clos Normand flanked by brightly coloured flowerbeds, you will soon discover why the painter found such solace in this idyllic rural hideaway.

The parks, gardens, follies and vineyards that make up the grounds of the Aveleda conjure up images of the Portugal of your imagination.

The objective of classical equitation is to study the way the horse naturally moves and to cultivate the highest levels of Haute Ecole. The result creates a harmony between rider and horse. During your visit, you’ll be fortunate enough to see the stallions perfecting their skills during their morning exercise programme, or take you on a tour of the stables.

Featured on: 8-day Gems of the Danube River Cruise

Featured on: 11-day Gems of the Seine River Cruise

By meeting those who work on the grounds for a tasting and some free time, you’ll soon become immersed in the viticulture that resonates throughout Portugal’s peaceful rural pockets of paradise. Featured on: 11-day Unforgettable Douro River Cruise

If you want to experience any of the magical moments featured in our Freechoice focus, we currently have a suite of offers available across all of our Europe river cruises with savings of up to 40% when you book by 29 February 2016. Conditions apply.

YEARS OF WONDER In 2016 Scenic turns 30. And we couldn’t have done it without you.

2016

is a banner year for Scenic, not only are we launching our new river cruises across South East Asia, we’re also celebrating 30 years in the luxury travel industry. Inspired by a breathtaking journey along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, founder and Scenic owner Glen Moroney launched Scenic in 1986 with coach tours across Australia. In the 1990s he expanded into New Zealand, Norfolk Island and Southern Africa. By the end of the decade Scenic was hosting tours to Canada and Alaska and in 2008 we built the first of our Scenic SpaceShips and began cruising the beautiful rivers of Europe. We now tour or cruise on almost every continent in the world and each year strive to find new horizons to explore. Our luxury Scenic Space-Ships hold pride of place in the Scenic story and our

fleet is widely regarded as setting a global benchmark for all-inclusive luxury river cruising. Working with only the best shipbuilders, we continue to break new ground with our cutting edge design.

cruise directors, coach captains and river cruise team members in every destination across the world, equating to over 1,100 team members. A significant global footprint for this privately owned Australian company.

This extraordinary attention to detail continues through to the interior design of each ship. Under the watchful eye of our Director of Project Design, Karen Moroney - who also happens to be Glen’s wife - each ship boasts a masterful design affinity with the natural landscape and culture of each river they cruise along. Karen and Glen also ensure that the very best in luxury appointments are available throughout the ship.

We’re extremely proud of our world-class reputation for creating and delivering the ultimate luxury cruise and tour itineraries for travellers who seek extraordinary experiences and exceptional service.

No matter whether you’re on a river cruise or land tour, Scenic’s Journey Designers are charged with developing itineraries that deliver those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that we know you'll treasure for years to come. The Scenic group of companies now employ over 300 direct employees across the globe, with our Head Office still proudly located in Newcastle, Australia. This is complemented by our tour directors,

GOURMET PARADISE Winsor Dobbin, Journalist, sports writer and wine expert, explores the many culinary delights of Bordeaux As we disembark from the Scenic Diamond for a day exploring the World Heritagelisted city of Bordeaux we are met by some enticing aromas and a riot of colour. The Marché de Quais, a gourmet producers' market, is held every Sunday along the Quai de Chartrons, just down the road from the central Place de Quinconces, and right next to where the luxury river cruise boats moor. The market offers a feast for the senses; with locals sniffing and prodding at everything from artisan breads, pastries and cakes to cooked chickens, paella and other hot delights. Farmers from around the south-west of France sell their seasonal cheeses, fruits and vegetables (see radishes piled high, or tonnes of fresh berries). Locals flock to buy fresh seafood, along with their red meat for

the week and local beers, wines and ciders. The whole scene is a hive of activity with many patrons sampling fresh oysters from nearby waters along with a glass of Bordeaux Blanc, or maybe chomping on a plump fresh fig. And if you are not in town on a Sunday then the famed Capucins market in the St Michel district is open six days a week. Few cities anywhere in the world take their food and wine as seriously as Bordeaux, making the city a dream destination for gourmets. From foie gras from Perigord, the world's best brandies from Cognac, fresh oysters from Arcachon and spicy peppers from the Basque country, Bordeaux is encircled by artisan farming regions. The city is also surrounded by some of the most prestigious vineyards in the PAGE 20

"Few cities anywhere in the world take their food and wine as seriously as Bordeaux, making the city a dream destination for gourmets" world – think names like Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau d'Yquem. Those lucky enough to cruise on the Scenic Diamond will visit many of the most famous appellations including time spent docked in the wine villages of Pauillac, Blaye, Cadillac and in the town of Libourne (lunch at Chez Servais is recommended). The cruise features, included excursions to some outstanding wine producers (including dinner at the renowned Médoc estate Chateau Giscours, tastings at Chateau Guiraud in Sauternes and sunset drinks at Chateau Soutard in Saint-Emilion), while the city also offers a plethora of wine bars and fine eateries for enjoying pre- or post-cruise, or on a day docked in the city. The food on board is very good, but for those who wish to occasionally dine on dry land the star restaurants in the city include the atmospheric La Tupina, which specialises in the cuisine of the south-west, (maybe a salad of duck hearts followed by escalope of veal with creamed spinach and a fresh pear tart).

VIETNAMESE PRAWN PHO Pho (pronounced ‘fuh’) is the umbrella term for Vietnamese noodle soup. Although usually made with beef, this version uses prawns and packs a spicy punch!

SERVES 2

Ingredients • 4 birds eye chillies, chopped • 3 cloves of garlic, crushed • 1 stick of lemongrass, cracked with the side of a knife • 2 cm piece of ginger, squashed slightly • 4 spring onions, trimmed and sliced diagonally • 6 00 ml of fish or vegetable stock • 3 tbsp of nam plah (Asian fish sauce) • Handful of coriander leaves • Handful of mint leaves • 150g cooked king prawns • 150g rice noodles • 100g bean sprouts • 1 lime, cut into wedges

Method Pour the stock into a medium size pan, add the lemongrass, garlic, ginger and two of the chillies and briskly boil for about 15 minutes to create the basic broth. Taste it and if necessary add the other two chillies. Turn down the heat, cover the pan and leave to simmer for a further 15 minutes. This will allow the flavours to really develop. Add the prawns to the soup, and add three of the spring onions, the fish sauce and the herbs. Reserve a little of each herb for garnishing. Put the lid back on the pan, and leave it whilst you carry out step 3. In a pan of boiling water, cook the beansprouts for 1-2 minutes, or until they are just tender. Drain them and add them to the soup. Place the rice noodles in the boiling water and cook for 4-5 minutes (or less if using straightto-wok noodles). Remove the lemongrass, ginger and garlic from the soup. Divide the cooked noodles between two deep bowls. Pour the soup over the noodles. Garnish with a little of the coriander and mint leaves, a few slices of red chilli and spring onion. Serve with a wedge of lime.

THERE’S TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY: EXPLORING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

A Helicopter flight over Outer Barrier Reef B Sir David Attenborough C Triggerfish

An underwater paradise Almost 60 years after his first visit, Sir David Attenborough has returned to one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders to film his latest BBC1 series, The Great Barrier Reef with Sir David Attenborough. “The first time I visited the Great Barrier Reef was in 1957 when I was on my way to New Guinea,” explained David. “In those days, television didn’t have a lot of money so, when you got to the other side of the world, you took advantage of it as you never knew when you were going to get back again, and so I took in the Barrier Reef on the way.” As part of his new television series, Sir David Attenborough enjoyed a three week filming schedule in and amongst the underwater wonderland, which also included time aboard one of the world’s most advanced research vessels equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology. “I have been at this a long time, but almost every year there is a new technological advance. Sometimes it’s big, sometimes it’s small - maybe a new lens that can suddenly hold in focus something within 6 inches of your eye and also the mountains 20 miles away. There is nowhere you can’t film now, in the pitch dark, the bottom of the sea – you couldn’t do that 10 years ago.” It’s these advances that provide an exciting opportunity to see one of the most important ecological landmarks on the planet in an entirely new way. And while this thrilling documentary brings the submerged world of rainbow-hued coral and curious looking, aptly named and oddly shaped fish into the comfort of our living rooms, nothing beats seeing this giant biological spectacle up close and personal. As the only living thing on plant earth visible from space, the 2,000-kilometrelong stretch of aquatic rainforest which hugs almost the entire length of Queensland’s shore can be appreciated from just inches away and marvelled at from high above.

B

A

Around 1.9 million people visit various parts of the reef each year, but only Scenic guests travelling on our Grand Australia and Very Best of Australia & New Zealand tours will be granted the rare opportunity to take in this colossal landmark from more than one vantage point. It’s all part of our included Enrich programme. This unique portfolio of events and excursions have been curated exclusively for the enjoyment of our guests. Their aim is to unlock the doors to truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences at no extra cost, the likes of which many touring companies would charge extra for. The excitement will begin to bubble when you arrive at the Thala Beach Nature Reserve, your eco-friendly resort located on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas. After enjoying a night of comfort nestled between the ocean and the rainforest, you’ll travel to the town of Port Douglas on the Coral Sea where a highspeed catamaran is ready to take you to a pontoon moored on the Outer Barrier Reef. After boarding the pontoon you’ll discover a number of ways in which to enjoy the many aquatic treasures around you, with plenty of first-class facilities to ensure you make the most of your time on the

water: snorkel with an instructor; board a semi-submersible boat and take a closer look at the world beneath the waves from an underwater observatory; or simply unwind on the spacious sun deck and gaze out at the endless turquoise waters. Once you’ve become acquainted with the reef and surrounding landscape, you’ll be invited to experience this titanic natural wonder from above during a helicopter flight. Soaring over the seas begins to unveil the sheer magnitude of this unparalleled coastal giant. Blotches of emerald, olive and bottle-green coral gatherings pepper the crystal-clear surface below like patchwork. The sapphire waters look almost static from above, so clear that they grant you a flawless insight into the magical universe beneath. The shoals of fishes may look like vague shadows and the multi-coloured landscape will have diluted in clarity, but from inside the intimate chopper, size triumphs the complex delicacy that lives amidst the sea and sand.

A

Beyond the reef As you would expect from a 5-star touring operator with 30 years’ experience, there are many more unforgettable Enrich experiences to look forward to on Scenic’s award-winning Australia touring holidays. In Margaret River on the epic 26-day Grand Australia tour you’ll be invited to enjoy lunch at a world-class winery. This is an area renowned for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, so you’ll be sure to enjoy a few locally produced tipples before a behind-the-scenes tour of the vineyard. Alice Springs is a popular gateway for those looking to embark on an adventure into the country’s Red Centre. Due to its unspoilt and raw landscape, it’s also the perfect environment for much of Australia’s wildlife. It’s in this part of the country’s Northern Territory that you’ll find Chris ‘Brolga’ Barnes’ Kangaroo Sanctuary. During your time here, Scenic have arranged for you to take a laidback walk through the bush with an Aboriginal guide to see rescued kangaroos wake from their afternoon nap. As you travel further into the heart of the outback, another remarkable Enrich experience awaits during an evening trip to Uluru. The Field of Light is an open-air exhibit created by Bruce Munro, a well-known British artist. This immersive outdoor spectacle features a thousand bulbs

planted in the desert floor surrounding the iconic Australian rock. As the sun sets, you’ll enjoy a unique outdoor dining experience with the twinkling lights of Munro’s artwork creating a magical ambiance to accompany your authentic Aussie cuisine and complimentary beverages. If you think that something this enchanting couldn’t possibly last forever, you’d be right. This once-in-a-lifetime event will only last for 12 months, therefore only guests travelling on our 2016 Grand Australia tours will be lucky enough to experience it first-hand.

B

Finally, Sydney marks the end of your journey and the final Enrich highlight. A seaplane flight over the harbour and Rose Bay offers yet another magical vantage point from which to soak up the endless sights of this most spectacular country.

SCENIC SPOTLIGHT A COMPANY OF INDIVIDUALS

Lewis Nolan works behind the scenes at Scenic HQ to ensure that everything is in place for your unforgettable escape. After six months of working as a Reservations Consultant at Scenic, I can safely say that one of my favourite parts of the job is guest interaction. Being trusted by the customer to take care of every aspect of their journey – whether it’s a seat request or arranging an anniversary surprise - is a rewarding experience, and we make it our priority to ensure their expectations are exceeded on a daily basis. When it comes to picking my dream Scenic holiday, I would have to go with the new 20-day Mystical Myanmar itinerary, which includes a visit to Lake Inle. With the country only recently opening its borders fully to travellers, and the rise in democratic stability, a very unique opportunity has arisen to see behind the curtain of a previously guarded nation. I can imagine no finer way to explore this colourful landscape than by cruising the Irrawaddy aboard our brand new Scenic Aura ship, which accommodates just 44 guests in 22 one bedroom balcony suites. It is without doubt the most spectacular ship on the river, packed with all the facilities you would expect to find in a five-star hotel, the

most spacious cabins around and a brilliant combination of time on board and ashore. Of course, our new South East Asia itineraries feature the spectacular Enrich experiences that have made our European river cruises so popular. I think that the Enrich programme is by far the most important and unique part of our cruises and tours. They’re once-in-a-lifetime highlights included at no extra cost, often curated exclusively for Scenic, and they give guests the chance to experience moments inaccessible to the ordinary traveller. To complement the Enrich experiences, Scenic have another unique sightseeing programme called Freechoice. This gives our guests the option to choose the experiences they would like to partake in from a wide selection of activities, and the pace ranges daily so there’s always something to suit your taste. The excursion to Ceský Krumlov in the Czech Republic and walking with the locals in Belgrade are up there as the best ones for me, but don’t ask me to pick a favourite because there’s just too many!
