LEWIS’ MEKONG ADVENTURE
South East Asia
SPIRITED AWAY
Lewis from our Reservations team shares his recent experience of the Mekong After seven nights on board the Scenic Spirit sailing the mighty Mekong river, I have returned to our Manchester office still revelling in the truly unforgettable experience. Each day on our 5-star vessel combined the exotic allure of South East Asia with a luxurious river cruising experience, the likes of which fused old-time colonial charm with a very modern approach to discovery.
Scenic Spirit launches on the Mekong
We’d like to introduce you to the team who will be taking good care of our Mekong River Cruise guests on our latest cruise ship, Scenic Spirit. Since the inaugural cruise in late January, the team have been settling into their roles under the guidance of Cruise Director, Paula Harrigan. Originally from Australia, Paula is now based in Cambodia and has lived in South East Asia for several years. She is extremely excited to be leading the team on Scenic’s inaugural year of river cruising throughout South East Asia. ‘I am immensely proud and excited to be part of the launch of Scenic's newest ship, the Scenic Spirit, on the Mekong River. It’s such a beautiful and innovative design and I can't wait to see the guest’s reactions when they come on board,’ says Paula. ‘We have such a lovely shore program for guests to enjoy off the ship and an amazing luxury ship for them to return to each day the perfect combination.’ Also on board will be Ario Prananda, our Executive Chef, as well as Baptiste Cabarry our Hotel Director. We have also employed a team of friendly local guides who will lead activities and excursions both on board and onshore.
ROYAL PALACE, PHNOM PENH Featuring classic Khmer architecture and ornate decorations, the Royal Palace is one of the most evocative landmarks in Cambodia’s capital city. The official residence of the King, you can explore the throne hall as well as the Silver Pagoda complex.

B
“We can’t wait to welcome our guests on board for what is sure to be a wonderful first cruising season”
It all began in the Vietnamese city of My Tho. Upon arrival we were personally greeted by Captain Thu and his team before being shown to our spacious accommodation. Every suite on the Scenic Spirit features its own personal balcony, complimentary mini-bar and flatscreen TV, not to mention a butler who is at your every beck and call. Our comfort was of the utmost priority, and every member of the crew worked to the peak of their ability to ensure we were spoilt from the moment we stepped foot on board.
As the bustle of life went on around us, we enjoyed an oasis of calm as we sailed the waterway with complimentary drinks in our hands and seasonal produce filling our plates. Cool towels were handed out after time ashore, refreshing beverages ready and waiting for our return. The crew had thought of everything, sometimes before I’d even considered it myself - now that’s 5-star service.
C
The contemporary oriental decor complemented the ship’s sleek and understated appearance. Although designed to a totally different specification than our European Space-Ships, Scenic Spirit boasted the same iconic luxuries that our guests have become accustomed to enjoying. A
Days ashore were filled with visits to local landmarks and markets throughout Vietnam and Cambodia. Cultural lectures shone a light on the area’s unique heritage, cooking classes showcased fragrant cuisine and temples stopped us in our tracks.
D
A visit to this extraordinary World Heritage-listed Site is truly a once-ina-lifetime experience. Once hidden in dense forest, this magnificent 12th century temple complex is simply breath-taking. Take in the harmony and splendour of the architecture and marvel at the astonishing carvings found everywhere.
CU CHI TUNNELS, VIETNAM
With expert local guides by our side throughout our time on dry land, we left no stone unturned. I was also fortunate enough to visit a local school run by a Khmer Rouge Survivor. Then there was a spiritual encounter at the Oudong monastery where we received a touching blessing by the chief monk and helped the nuns prepare the monastery’s food for the day.
E
These unique insights and experiences were just a handful of the perks I was treated to as a Scenic guest. Quite simply, this was the adventure of a lifetime.
The true impact of the Vietnam War is on display everywhere as you tour the Cu Chi Tunnels. At its peak the tunnel system stretched from the South Vietnamese capital to the Cambodian border; in the district of Cu Chi alone there are more than 250 kilometres of tunnels.

getaway and one of the top Siem Reap hotels within reach of local boutique shops, restaurants and the Angkor Archaeological Park. Elegant and opulent, the Park Hyatt is the perfect introduction to Siem Reap for our Scenic guests. Every room is luxurious and features all the amenities you would expect in a 5-star hotel anywhere in the world. The beautiful free-form pool is the perfect place to relax after a day’s excursion, the spa features a range of heavenly pampering experiences and there is nothing better in the world than relaxing under the ancient Banyan tree in the courtyard with the world’s greatest ginger mojito on hand.
The gateway to the wonders of Angkor Wat, also turns out to be a hidden gem
In northwestern Cambodia lies the town of Siem Reap. Its biggest claim to fame has long been that it’s the gateway to the splendours of the World Heritage-listed Site of the Temples of Angkor, the intricate complex of temples scattered across the jungle just outside of town. Siem Reap was little more than a village when French explorers such as Henri Mouhot rediscovered Angkor in the 19th century. However, in the last few years, the town itself has grown exponentially and is now a tourist destination in its own right. Featuring wide boulevardes and ornate architecture that fuses French and Khmer influences, Siem Reap offers plenty of attractions from boutique shops selling everything from handcrafted ceramics and jewellery to clothing and antiques; a wide variety of restaurants and a buzzing nightlife, with many small bars located in the Pub Street area.
B
Bargains can be found in the two markets in town. The Old Market - Phsar Chas - is the original Khmer market in Siem Reap. Selling souvenirs, silks, silver, jewellery, some antiques, clothes, shoes, household items, hardware, and fresh food, there’s something for everyone. The Noon Night Market is the second oldest, and second largest of the night markets and a great place to explore during a sultry Cambodian evening. Voted one of the top 100 hotels in the world, the Park Hyatt Siem Reap is strategically located in the heart of the city, a luxurious

There will be plenty of chances to sample the delicious local Khmer cuisine or French fusion restaurants and lively Pub
Street is also just a short taxi ride away. Of course the main attraction and number one reason for visiting Siem Reap is its proximity to the incredible Angkor Wat Archaeological Park. For several centuries Angkor, was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom, situated over 400 square kilometres, the site consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes. Scenic guests will have the chance to explore several key temples including the Bayon and Ta Prohm as well as the extraordinary Angkor Wat temple itself. This undisputed highlight includes the chance to enjoy Angkor Wat at sunrise and take a tethered balloon ride to witness the full scale of these temples from the air. A visit to Siem Reap is something that will live long in the memory.

HOW TO
Wine merchant Tom Munro learned his craft working in the winery and vineyards of the 14th century Château de Roquetaillade, a port of call on Scenic’s Bordeaux cruise itinerary. Tom explains his approach to wine tasting.
STEP 2 What does a wine make you think of when you smell it? Is it intensely perfumed or delicately scented? The sense of smell is connected to the memory too and a wine’s aromas can make us think of experiences from the past. Smelling a wine can take you on a journey through time, go with it.
STEP 5 Above all, whether you like a wine or not is totally up to you. So when you find a wine you like, take a photo of the bottle label to help you remember the vineyard name and vintage, and find out what grape varieties the wine was made from. This will help you to find more of the kinds of wines you like in future. A free smart phone app like Wine-Searcher can provide a lot of helpful background information too.

The wines of Saint-Émilion are typically blended from different grape varieties, mostly Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
STEP 4 Wine is an integral part of a meal or a moment shared with friends, or perhaps alone in the company of a beautiful view. If you discovered a wine when you were away on holiday, you can look forward to reliving the experience when you return home simply by pulling the cork on another bottle.
Not a wine, Rémy Martin is a specialist in fine Champagne Cognac.
WINERIES WITH SCENIC
Chateau Siaurac, Saint-Émilion wine region, France
STEP 3 The way the wine tastes in the mouth is the most complex experience of all. Is it dry or sweet? Is it sour or rounded? Does it have a tannic bite or a silky smooth texture? I think the main thing to look for here is how much one sip makes you want to take another. If you like the way the wine tastes in your mouth you’ll find yourself naturally going back for more.
Alter Klosterkeller, Dürnstein, Austria
TOP TEN
1 STEP 1 Tasting a wine is a voyage of discovery that starts with its colour. Is the wine vibrantly coloured (typical of a wine in its youth) or is it an older vintage showing a hint of orange around the edge? Wine is beautiful to look at, hold your glass up to the light and be dazzled.

SCENIC SERVES UP A TASTE OF PORTUGAL ON THE MIGHTY DOURO RIVER
A
B
The northern Portuguese city of Porto – where Scenic’s newest ship, the Scenic Azure, sets sail on its 8 or 11 day cruise up the Douro River and back again – is a magical place from which to set off on a voyage of discovery, writes Catherine Marshall. The mouth of the Douro River marks the starting point for an enchanted journey. On the northern bank lies the city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Site where narrow houses – tightly-packed, clad in decorative tiles and washed in shades of ochre and pink and terracotta – tumble down the hillsides towards the water. On the southern side lies Vila Nova da Gaia, Porto’s twin and the place that was inhabited, during Roman times, by most of this region’s population. Separating the two settlements is the Douro, a river that springs to life in central-north Spain and flows on for nearly 1,000 kilometres before emptying out into the Atlantic Ocean. And stitching them together again is a series of bridges that span the river like beautiful, arched pennants: here’s the Ponte Luis I, across which the commuter train rumbles and pedestrians wander; there is the Ponte Maria Douro Valley, Portugal
Pia, a wrought-iron railway bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel; and beyond Eiffel’s delicate masterpiece is its modern replacement, the Sao Joao Bridge juxtaposed in slick white concrete. It’s a beautiful place from which to embark on an adventure, filled as it is with preserved Romanesque, Neoclassical and Manuelinestyle architecture, and rich in a history that centres on the river flowing through it. It’s upon this river that the very existence of the grand old city of Porto is hinged: Celts and Moors and Romans lived beside its banks at one time or another; wine was transported along its course, loaded onto flat-bottomed boats called rabelos or even cast adrift so
PAGE 17
that barrels would float from the Douro Valley, upstream, all the way to Porto, where they would be scooped from the river and delivered to cellars or merchant ships; and a new kind of liquor was born here when spirits – added to bottles of Douro wine to keep them from turning to vinegar on their journey to the British Isles – transformed them, inadvertently, into the lush, sweet nectar known as port. Before the Scenic Azure has even set sail, passengers will have tasted the fruits of the Douro Valley’s vines, for a Portuguese meal is complete only once the wine has been poured. “We love codfish – and we have one-thousand ways to cook it. We still have the habit to go down to the local market to buy fresh fish and vegetables, and to cook them at home.” This home-style cooking is faithfully replicated in the eateries frequented by Portuenses (as residents of Porto are known): at the fishing village of Afurada on the southern bank of the Douro, in the waterside municipality of Matosinhos, north-west of the city centre, chefs set up coal stoves on the pavements and grill the day’s catch of sardines, seabass, brill. Vegetable soup usually precedes the main course, and dessert almost always includes leite-crème queimado
It’s a cuisine whose provenance and history come to life again when passengers step off the ship and into the villages and quintas lining this deep and beautiful valley. At Quinta Pacheca, which sits among capacious vineyards in the village of Cambres, grapes are still ritually stamped by foot in white granite tanks at the end of each harvest; the tanks show no sign of the more than a century’s worth of grape-stamping that’s occurred in them since they were installed in 1910.
At Quinta Nova, which sits high above the river on a vineyard-terraced hillside, guests sip wines made from grapes grown in 18th century orchards. They dip bread into olive oil pressed from the fruit of the nearby olive grove. And even the bread has its own story to tell: the local baker doesn’t have a delivery service, so he leaves a bag of bread in the crook of a tree each morning at the top of the road that winds its way down to Quinta Nova. It’s a story that imbues every fresh loaf with something more than mere wheat and yeast; it tells of care and trust and sharing, and of the deep sense of community upon which the people of this valley depend.

– a silken custard which, when added to a puff pastry cup, is transformed into a flawless, delectable Portuguese tart. As the Scenic Azure glides out of Porto and heads upriver towards the iconic Douro Valley, its on board chefs draw inspiration from the dishes being served in the homes dotting the increasingly vertiginous hillsides. All along the way, the produce that springs from this schist-heavy soil - olives, almonds, figs, grapes, sumac – is used to make the oils and wines and ports and preserves and seasonings that distinguish this region’s dishes.

LES SPÉCIALISTES FRANÇAIS Scenic – the French specialists Since launching our South of France cruises on the Saône and Rhône rivers in 2012, we’ve grown exponentially and in 2014 we introduced our beautiful Seine river cruises. Our passion for the French waterways continued into 2015 when the gorgeous Bordeaux region was added. We have two all-inclusive luxury Space-Ships in the south of France and one each on the Seine and Bordeaux rivers. We are the only cruise operator to offer longer cruises on every major river. France offers so much in terms of incredible scenery, gourmet cuisine and inimitable style and hospitality, we thought it only fair that we offered our guests even more time to immerse themselves in the unique regions of a truly fascinating country and as a result many of our itineraries include extra days for more exploration. Our Journey Designers have worked tirelessly to source a range of once-in-a-lifetime Enrich and Sundowner events that are completely exclusive to Scenic.
Guests can also make the most of our tech-smart Scenic Tailormade GPS which offers self-guided walking and cycling tours throughout the region, as well as expert on board commentary of key highlights along the cruise route. Our e-bikes are electronically operated and available for guests to use if they wish to get out on their own and explore further. Perhaps the thing that sets us apart more than any other is our attention to detail and diversity when it comes to our itineraries. Bordeaux, for example, is renowned as the world’s leading wine producing region, however we also explore the fabulous great outdoors, showcasing the active lifestyle of the locals in each region peppered with walking tracks and guided cycling tours. Across France we showcase the history both centuries old and of the more recent times and the flora and fauna of each region is brought to life via our many included touring options such as visits to local bird conservation areas, local farms, markets and iconic landmarks. Scenic truly is the specialist when it comes to all things France River Cruising.

SEINE-SATIONAL Explore one of the most important rivers in Europe B
Stretching 780 kilometres from Seine, its source and namesake in northeastern Burgundy, to the English Channel between Le Havre and Honfleur, the Seine River is one of the oldest trade routes on Earth. The Celts used the river to transport tin from Brittany and Cornwall to present-day Europe before the Romans greatly increased trade along the waterway. Eventually, the Vikings sailed south on the Seine and made the section north of Paris an integral part of their trade routes – a network connecting northern Europe and the British Isles. Flowing through the iconic French capital of Paris, its wide path cuts the ‘city of light’ in two and has become an easy way to define your location – Left Bank or Right Bank. All along the Seine, innumerable universities, abbeys, museums, orchestras, opera, theatre, and dance companies, and other major cultural institutions have prospered for centuries. A Seine, Paris B Paris
A
Perhaps one of the most influential cultural influences this river has had on artists is in the medium of painting. The Seine, and the many towns and villages along its path have
"Flowing through the iconic French capital of Paris, its wide path cuts the ‘city of light’ in two..."
been the inspiration and subject for painters for centuries, and none more so than the Impressionists.

When you take a Seine River Cruise with Scenic, you’ll have the opportunity to not only cruise this historic river in all-inclusive luxury on board our Scenic Space-Ships, but also immerse yourself in the history and culture of this unique region. Our 11 Day Gems of the Seine journey offers the perfect introduction to this intriguing waterway. Beginning in Paris, you’ll visit the chateau of King Richard, the Lionheart in Les Andelys, walk in the footsteps of Joan of Arc in beautiful Rouen and explore the historic Western Front, the spot where the heartbreaking Battle of the Somme took place in 1916. With the 100th anniversary recently commemorated, you can expect a truly sobering encounter during your visit to the Somme, a battle which claimed over one million casualties. Visits to the Lochnagar crater and Anglo-French memorial are coupled with tales of immense bravery and human sacrifice.

From there you’ll spend time on the Normandy coast as you cruise up to the sleepy fishing village of Honfleur. Due to the unique design of your Scenic Space-Ship, you are able to sail into the open waters surrounding this coastal gem. Not all river cruise ships are able to navigate this route and dock in the heart of Honfleur, but as a Scenic guest you are once again privy to a unique vantage point, which promises a far more laid-back and relaxing encounter. Those in search of the freshest seafood will not be disappointed. Honfleur boasts myriad eateries, charming streets and quaint architectural jewels, with a wealth of restaurants offering the catch of the day to all those eager to sample delicacies from the surrounding waters.
D
The following day you can take advantage of a wealth of Scenic Freechoice touring options. A visit to the D-Day Landing Beaches offers another stark insight into the important historical role this country played in the shaping of modern day Europe. The museum is a must for those wanting to find out more about this pivotal landmark. PAGE 26
A visit to Giverny and the king of the Impressionists, Claude Monet’s extraordinary home and gardens will send your soul into raptures. A key inspiration for many of his last paintings, the waterlilies and green-hued garden is a thing of beauty, and one you will undoubtedly recognise from his iconic work.
CLAUDE MONET’S HOUSE AND GARDENS AT GIVERNY. Preserved as they were during the painter’s lifetime, Monet’s house, studio, and gardens provide an insight into the painter’s life and creative process, and, through him, into the heart of the Impressionist movement itself.
Conflans is your next stop where you’ll have the chance to continue your artistic pilgrimage as you visit Auvers-sur-Oise and step inside the room of the great Vincent van Gogh. You’ll then finish in Paris where there is a surfeit of museums and galleries to see the work of the masters. Alternatively, you could opt to visit the spectacular Palace of Versailles, one of the world’s most visited attractions. A river for the ages. An experience you’ll love. Cruising the Seine River is the trip of a lifetime and with Scenic you’ll be travelling with the French specialists.
MUSÉE DU LOUVRE, PARIS. One of the world’s great museums, the Louvre is famous, of course, as the home of the Mona Lisa and the Winged Victory, but this vast and sumptuous royal palace, in its successive architectural incarnations, has ruled central Paris since the late 12th century. Today the Louvre’s collection covers Western art from the Middle Ages to 1848, formative works from ancient civilisations, and works of Islamic art.

So if you want to sample the catch of the day with a crisp glass of white wine, I would highly recommend taking some time to enjoying lunch in one of the many eateries.
SEDUCED BY THE SEINE
WHAT WERE YOUR ONSHORE HIGHLIGHTS?
Cider tasting in Lyons la Forêt, visiting the Normandy beaches where the D-Day landings took place and wandering the medieval streets of Rouen were all extremely memorable. Rouen, in particular, was an endless swathe of charming streets littered with hidden bistros and spectacular architecture. I would also recommend taking a coastal walk through the chocolate-box village of Etretat. It’s well worth embarking on the guided tour before enjoying some time to discover the gems independently.
Plentiful breakfast options set us up for the busy day ahead, with light buffet options and made-to-order omelettes both on offer. Teas, coffee, juice, cereal, hot and cold options cater to all tastes. Lunches were diverse and delicious, often featuring a number of authentic regional options along-side some home comforts. You can sit where you want and the crew with come to your table to re-fill your glass throughout. L’Amour was without doubt one of the highlights. Every guest gets to experience this intimate dining option at least once. The crew were personable yet professional; all five courses were stunning, and the accompanying wines (especially the French red) couldn’t have been better.
DID FOOD PLAY A STARRING ROLE ON BOARD?
DID YOU ENCOUNTER ANY ISSUES THROUGHOUT YOUR CRUISE?
Absolutely, we were blown away by the exceptional cuisine and choice on offer. We were not disappointed.

YOU CHOSE TO TRAVEL VIA EUROSTAR. HOW DID THIS DIFFER FROM FLYING?
While the interior, exceptional cuisine and suites are completely flawless, one of the ship’s greatest features is its unique design. This means that, unlike a number of competitor vessels, Scenic guests are able to sail into open seas and dock in the port town of Honfleur. The port had mix of small fishing vessels and some leisure boats. We were also surrounded by restaurants, many of which offered the freshest seafood around.

FINALLY, WHAT EXPERIENCE WILL STAY WITH YOU THE LONGEST?
The Palace of Versailles - wow. I could have spent a whole day meandering the many ornate halls and intricate gardens of this grand historic property. Visiting the battle grounds of the Somme was also a very somber experience. This landmark site played a huge historical role in the World War I. We also got to visit the Anglo-French memorial and heard many stories of human bravery. TIPS FOR TAKING THE PERFECT PHOTO ON YOUR SMARTPHONE A different perspective – look at things a little differently when taking your photos. Use different levels or angles to create something a little bit different. Let there be light – look for a light source to highlight your subject, take your shots at sunrise or sunset when the light is at its softest. Details, details, details – often the littlest of details are the most interesting, from a pattern on a leaf to the texture of food in a local market. Filter it out – download one of a multitude of photo filter apps and in a few swipes you’ll achieve perfection. Less is more – only post the best photos from your journey to create a lasting impact on your audience.

UNLOCK THE MYSTERIES OF RUSSIA
The BBC’s recent adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’ documented the rise and fall of five aristocratic families in the waning days of Imperial Russia. It’s time to uncover the mysteries for yourself. To travel along the Volga River and some of its tributaries between the country’s two great cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow is a step back in time. From architectural splendours to the opulence of fine art, cruise through the beating heart of this captivating country on the 15 Day Jewels of Russia and explore the wonders of one of the most influential cultures in the world.
Follow the longest waterway in Europe through the heart of this most enigmatic region.
Commonly referred to as ‘the Venice of the North’, be captivated by the romance of Russia’s most beautiful city, St. Petersburg. With its network of canals and over four hundred bridges, it's one of the greatest urban creations of the 18th century.
A
The historic centre of the city is rich in architectural wealth, with opulent palaces and extravagant churches. Within the magnificent Winter Palace formerly the official residence of the Romanov tsars you’ll find the Hermitage Museum. One of the largest and oldest museums in the world, it contains a staggering three million pieces of art. ST. PETERSBURG
South of St. Petersburg, the town of Pushkin is home to the striking Catherine Palace. Completed in 1756 for Catherine the Great, the palace is a fine example of late Baroque style architecture. The spectacular blue and white façade stretching for more than 325 metres is gilded with more than 100 kilograms of gold. Wander the manicured gardens and explore the spectacular great

A visit to Russia would not be complete without a ballet performance. Be enchanted by an exclusive private Russian ballet performance at the last Imperial palace to be built, the grand Vladimir Palace. As you journey along the mighty Volga, relax on board your luxury boutique ship, Scenic Tsar, before arriving at the 15th century settlement of Kizhi Island. This open-air museum contains a collection of more than 80 historical structures. Undoubtedly the highlight is World Heritagelisted Kizhi Pogost, a picturesque ensemble of wooden churches built in the 18th century. The 22-dome Transfiguration Church is an architectural feat, constructed without a single nail. The Church of the Intercession and the octagonal wooden bell tower are equally impressive. Located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers, Yaroslavl is one of the most well-preserved cities in Russia. A major commercial centre from the 11th century this neo-classical city features more oniondomed churches than any other in Russia.
D
The emerald-domed Church of Elijah the Prophet and the gilded towers of the Assumption Cathedral are simply masterful constructions.

HOW TO ENTER To be in with a chance of winning, simply submit your entry and contact details by post to Wonder
I’ve only been with Scenic for a short period of time, however I’m relishing the opportunity to work for a 5-star brand with a truly unique offering. My first project at Scenic was to help produce our brand new 2017 Americas touring brochure. This exciting piece of work meant working closely with our in-house design team and the expert Scenic Journey Designers to accurately showcase our sensational escapes. I learned a lot about the beautiful destinations we visit, the unique experiences featured on our itineraries and how Scenic go to extreme lengths to ensure each and every guest enjoys a truly magical experience. If you’re looking for diversity, you’d come to the right place - from the mighty glaciers of Canada and Alaska, to the historic legacy of America’s east coast there really is something for everyone. If I was given the chance to experience one of these tours, I would have to go for the Classic California Coast itinerary. This sun-drenched
adventure features so many iconic and beautiful locations, including San Francisco and Yosemite National Park. I would especially like to experience the Enrich highlight at the Grand Canyon, which includes flying over the western rim and a special lunch at Guano Point with a nearly 360 degree canyon view. As well as producing the brochure I’ve also been lucky enough to attend the recent Information Session at Blenheim Palace, which has allowed me to meet some of our Scenic guests. It was great to hear first-hand about the wonderful experiences guests have had whilst on their Scenic cruises and tours. This has got me really looking forward to stepping on board a Scenic Space-Ship, meeting more of the guests and sharing in the once in a lifetime experiences with them. I’ll be sure to report back and let you know all about my time on board via the Scenic blog.
