Saigon City Hall
A heady mix of sights and sounds introduce Vietnam’s biggest city, but Ho Chi Minh, or Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh, to give it its full Vietnamese title, has taken its time reinventing itself from the after-effects of heavy conflict. After the Vietnamese took over from the Khmers in the 17th century, Saigon, as it was then known, was colonized by the French, the effects of which are still very much visible in the present day. Centuries on, about 30 years after the end of the Vietnam War, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, in honor of the communist revolutionary leader. A controversial decision in the eyes of some, who still call it Saigon now. So much can be learned about the city’s heritage from the eclectic mix of architecture. buildings are now the staging area for museums and theaters. The city’s temples and pagodas allow residents to practice their religion and educate tourists, all while the erection of contemporary skyscrapers acknowledges the development into the modern world. The Reunification Palace, also known as the Independence Palace, is remembered for the iconic photograph taken of the military tanker storming its iron gates in 1975, marking the end of the war and symbolizing the fall of South Vietnam. Designed by Vietnamese architect, Ngo Viet Thu, the 1960s-inspired concrete structure remains unchanged after all these years, with even two tanks parked outside. A stark contrast to the palace’s straight lines and angles, Saigon Opera House, also known as
the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, is an excellent example of the city’s French influence. Built by Eugene Ferret, it was designed to reflect Paris’ Petit Palais Museum of Fine Arts, and is a spectacle both inside and out. Restored in 1995 to reflect its former 19th century beauty, the authentic polished pearl exterior and lavish interior design continue to evoke memories of the past, while creating the most perfect of settings for catching a ballet performance or music concert. Similarly, Saigon City Hall and Saigon Central Post Office were built by French architects, Garde and Gustave Eiffel respectively. One of the city hall’s most striking features is its Europeaninspired bell tower, as well as the spectacular exterior lighting, illuminating its exquisitely maintained grounds at night. Built between 1886 and 1891 the

Gothic-Renaissance and French influence of the post office is a celebration of color and pattern, with ornate arches, high ceilings and dark woods. Ho Chi Minh City’s history is not only traceable through its buildings, however. The Cu Chi Tunnels, now part of the Vietnam War Memorial Park, are a network of underground tunnels dug by the Viet Cong, as an effective means of operating covertly across a large area. Visitors are given the opportunity to experience first-hand just what it might have been like for the soldiers, during an exploration of the living areas, storage facilities, weapon factories, hospitals and command centers, buried some three stories below the ground. Having thrived in the face of adversity, this dynamic and charming metropolis has elevated its status to heights emulating that
of Singapore and Bangkok, as fine-dining restaurants, bars, nightclubs and designer boutiques become popular destinations for locals and tourists alike. Punctuate days of discovery, dating back hundreds of years, with the sights, sounds and tastes of Vietnamese inner-city living. Try the local delicacy, Banh Mi, a popular sandwich filled with vegetables, meat, pickles and chillies, or sip a delicious bowl of Pho, a noodle soup dish popular with the masses. Peruse the handicrafts of Ben Thanh Market, haggling for souvenirs to take home, enjoy a drink on Pham Ngu Loa Street, the bar and café hub, or plan a pamper day at one of the many celebrated spas, providing a range of European and Vietnamese treatments, as you unlock every piece of Ho Chi Minh City’s puzzle. A confident community, using its past to inform an exciting future.
Asian and contemporary design combine in our suites and staterooms, which range from the 256ft² Emerald Stateroom, with port hole window, to the 452ft² Owner’s One-Bedroom Suite, complete with outdoor terrace and private Jacuzzi. Twin or queen-size beds, luxury linens and indulgent toiletries are all complimentary, as is every on-board meal and a selection of wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. Enjoy buffet breakfasts and lunches, as well as á la carte dining in Reflections Restaurant, before moving over to the Horizon Bar & Lounge, where our trained bar staff will create your favorite drink. Spend your time on the water on the Sun Deck or Pool Deck, our decadent open-air spaces, complete with a pool, a bar, comfortable chairs and sun loungers.

Extend your adventure with a city stay in a range of destinations, enjoying luxurious stays in centrally located hotels, city tours and all transfers included, so all you have to worry about is what you want to see, eat and do during your time there. For a little inspiration, we’ve selected our picks of the must-see sights in Prague, Paris, Lisbon and Budapest. Page 8
Page 9
Prague
Lisbon
Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, continues to fly largely under the radar compared to many of Europe’s more well-known capitals. A city ripe with history, culture and striking architecture, there is no lack of sites to explore, from the magical castle overlooking the city to the many beer halls alive with music and clanking steins. Aside from the castle, Prague’s Old Town Square is perhaps the most photographed location in a very photogenic city. The iconic square displays a stunning mix of architectural styles, from the Gothic Church of Our Lady to the Baroque St. Nicholas Church. Though all impressive buildings in their own right, the astronomical clock gracing the side of the Old Town Hall is the undisputed star of the show.
Capital of Portugal and its once-mighty empire, Lisbon has captivated visitors for centuries. Everywhere you look, reminders of Portugal’s great wealth and tradition of exploration surround. Located on the Atlantic along the River Tagus, Lisbon spreads across several hills, offering spectacular vistas from nearly every cobblestoned street. Combining beaches, a world-class art scene, fantastic food and wine, traditional architecture and history, Lisbon is the perfect city escape to cap off your Secrets of the Douro river cruise.
After transferring to your centrally-located hotel, enjoy 3 nights in the former seat of Bohemian power. A guided city tour visits landmarks such as St. Vitus Cathedral, and also includes a stop for refreshments in Lobkowizc Palace, the only privately-owned building in the Prague Castle complex. Your second full day is free to explore at leisure. Perhaps you’ll join our DiscoverMORE Tastes of Czechia tour to savor local flavors and learn about what makes the Czech Republic’s culinary scene so unique.
After transferring to your centrally-located hotel, enjoy 3 nights in this sunny, vibrant city. Explore the city center with its iconic yellow trams and “azulejos” on an included tour. Then, travel to Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most prominent examples of late Gothic Manueline architecture in all Portugal. Your second full day is free to explore at leisure. Perhaps you’ll visit one of the city’s many museums, or embark on a day trip to nearby Sintra.
BUDAPEST
Paris There are so many photo-worthy points of interest that most intrepid explorers want to tick off their list. The Eiffel Tower, of course, is a must-see, as is the stunning Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe at the avenue’s west end. The Louvre is stunning inside and out and somewhere you can view famous paintings, Egyptian antiquities and sculptures dating back to the Middle-Ages. Enjoy fresh pastries and coffee out on the terrace of a quaint café, pick up fresh produce from a market and venture to Jardin de Tuileries for a picnic and, in the evening, dine on authentic French cuisine at a local bistro.
Page 10
Located on the edge of the Great Hungarian Plain, Budapest is a capital city that has experienced numerous conquests over the centuries, seeing the rise and fall of many great dynasties. Originally two cities separated by the mighty Danube, Buda and Pest combined in 1873 to form one major power. Today, Budapest is experiencing a resurgence on the global scene, coming into its own after decades under Communist rule. With an abundance of architectural styles to gawk at, to its famous thermal baths, Budapest has something for every traveler. Enjoy additional nights in Budapest on one of our many exciting Danube itineraries. In addition to the highlights visited on your cruise, you will now have the time to explore this miraculous city at a more leisurely pace. Browse the fresh produce and traditional goods of the Great Market Hall or unwind in the many pools of the Szechenyi Baths.

Venture east to explore Belgrade, Bratislava & Bucharest by Pip O'Connor
St Sava Church, Belgrade
Inspiration to many a prolific creative, the Danube has long been the recipient of much celebration. But, if you’re looking to see another side to this iconic river, Belgrade, Bratislava and Bucharest are three Eastern European gems you should seek out.
Palace of the Parliament, Bucharest
Kalemegdan Fortress
Protectively overlooked by its imposing fortress, Belgrade is a gateway between the east and west and is the only capital city constructed at the confluence of two main rivers. The city itself is divided by the Sava River. On one side, a grid of concrete blocks makes up New Belgrade’s central business district, evoking memories of Tito’s communist ruling, (the mausoleum of whom is open to visit). Original Belgrade has retained its cobblestone streets, café-lined terraces and boutiques, exuding the 19th century charm of France’s Montmartre, and the Church of Saint Sava, with its grandiose Byzantine bell towers, dominates an otherwise seemingly contradictory skyline. Set on the Danube, Bratislava is a mix of architectural styles, built within the dramatic setting of the Little Carpathian Mountains. At the top of a rocky outcrop, Bratislava Castle sits proudly, ever-present to visitors below and a hike through the forest to its beautiful four-turreted Gothic-Renaissance surrounds and Baroque gardens, offer excellent panoramas. Scale the 14th century town hall’s Gothic tower for elevated views of Main Square, witness the Rococo architecture of Mirbach Palace and the outstanding three-nave Gothic structure of St. Martin’s Cathedral. The 'Paris of the East', Bucharest is an eclectic mix of old and new, providing insight into an interchangeable political history. What remains of its Art Nouveau and municipal buildings can be found in the Old Town, starkly contrasting with the surrounding communistera blocks, like that of the Palace of Parliament.
Bratislava Old town
Shaped by similar pasts, each of these three capital cities have allowed their history to have prominence in the present, making an exploration of each a truly revealing exercise. Page 13

Sarah Spilsbury, Activity Manager We all strive to lead a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes, maintaining that lifestyle proves more difficult on vacation. That’s why, for 2019, we’ve introduced Activity Managers for all of our European river cruises! These specially-trained crew members will host a variety of exercise classes, onboard activities, onshore excursions and evening entertainment, not only to keep you engaged, but EmeraldACTIVE and feeling your very best. Designed to enhance our EmeraldACTIVE programs, we were eager to find out all there is to know, and who better to ask than Activity Manager, Sarah Spilsbury, one of our newest members to the crew.
How did you become an Emerald Waterways Activity Manager? After graduating from Theatre School, I moved to Spain and worked as a host and singer for a hotel. From there, I caught the travel bug and have travelled the world, working for various cruise lines in a similar role. I was intrigued by the role of Activity Manager, as it offered something different to what I had previously experienced and presented a new challenge.
What do you enjoy most about your job? I love meeting new people, seeking new experiences and learning new skills, all while seeing different parts of the world. It’s great to join our guests on guided walks, bike tours and hikes, I enjoy spending the day with them and learning the history of the amazing ports we dock in and the rivers we sail.
What does a typical day for you involve? Mornings could begin with a wellness class such as yoga or Pilates out on the Sun Deck, or I could be joining guests on a leisurely hike to explore a local town or city. During the
afternoon, guests can join me for a range of activities, before an evening of entertainment.
What can guests expect from the new EmeraldACTIVE programs? A selection of activities to keep you moving. Whether it’s while we’re out on the water or while we’re docked in one of the many beautiful ports. Trekking poles are available in all staterooms and suites, so they can join me on guided hikes, and our complimentary bicycles* can be taken out on guided bike rides. On board, guests can take part in a range of wellness classes, from stretching and yoga, to Pilates and aqua aerobics. And, the beauty of these classes is that they’re for beginners, so everybody can join. We also offer golf and a ‘walk-a-mile’ session on the Sun Deck, as well as Nintendo Wii tournaments, tea-time trivia, card tournaments or even a game of Battleship. And, after dinner, they can join me in the lounge for evening entertainment, including cabaret, traditional local performances, gameshows and karaoke.
What is your favorite destination and why? My favourite destination so far is Budapest, I get to join the guests on a hike through the lively city and up to Buda Hill, where the views over The Chain Bridge, linking Buda and Pest, are breath-taking.
*Emerald Radiance on the Douro does not have bicycles or an indoor pool/ cinema, instead there is a spa-style Serenity Pool on the Sun Deck.

A FRENCH LOVE AFFAIR A journey through France with Emerald Waterways provides quite the treat for foodies and viticulturalists. by Pip O'Connor
Synonymous with elegance and style, there are very few things in which France does not excel. But, perhaps, nothing more so than gastronomy. Renowned the world over and home to the most Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe, the French love of food dates as far back as the Middle-Ages. So highly considered is their cuisine, it’s been awarded UNESCO status under ‘intangible cultural heritage’. Page 16
Our brand new 8-day river cruise, Flavours of Burgundy & Provence, sails the Rhône, stopping off at some of the country’s most prestigious wine estates and artisanal markets. Here, such villages, towns and cities not only harvest some of the world’s top wine-producing grapes, but have played a huge part in the creation of France’s foodie revolution.
Food In France, your heritage is reflected in what you eat, so a natural sense of pride comes hand in hand with your culinary capabilities. As a result, French cuisine has always been considered as having a certain level of sophistication, as society encourages a discerning way of cooking. And, the country’s climate and soil make the production of fresh fruit, vegetables, grains and herbs suitable for a self-sufficient lifestyle, allowing for such levels of standards to be adhered to.
Wine Producing up to eight billion bottles of wine a year, it’s no wonder that France has built up a reputation as the home of wine. A combination of the climate and fertile soil provides the perfect setting for successful viticulture, which is why this river cruise along the Rhône offers up much in the way of visits to wine estates, winery tours and tastings.
New for 2020: Flavours of Burgundy & Provence As a member of our EmeraldEXPLORER loyalty program, one of the perks you’ll enjoy is advance notice of new itineraries. And for 2020, we could not be more thrilled to announce the addition of our latest Rhône river cruise: Flavours of Burgundy & Provence. Sailing roundtrip Lyon, this 8-day journey through southern France is an absolute must for foodies and wine connoisseurs alike. Synonymous with elegance and culture, there are few arts in which France does not excel. That being said, it is perhaps best known for its amazing gastronomy, with more Michelin-starred restaurants than
any other country in Europe. In fact, France’s cuisine is so highly regarded, its been awarded UNESCO status under “intangible cultural heritage.” Now that’s impressive! In addition to 3 days in Lyon, the ancient city christened “the gastronomic capital of the world,” you’ll also venture to Tournus, Belleville-sur-Saône, Tain l’Hermitage, Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In order to create this mouth-watering new cruise, we took a number of highlights from our Sensations of Lyon & Provence itinerary, adding in additional unique opportunities to experience the food and wine that make these two regions world famous. In Tournus, meet local truffle farmers and discover how these sought-after ingredients are harvested from nearby forests. Follow through the woods as they use specially-trained dogs to uncover these prized culinary gems buried underground. In Belleville-sur-Saône, visit a Beaujolais wine estate to learn about the province’s storied wine-making history and what makes the grape varietal grown here (the purple Gamay) so special. Enjoy an authentic Provençal dinner onboard prepared by Top Chef France finalist Chef Fabien Morreale. Sample fresh produce, gourmet chocolates, artisanal cheeses and other French specialties on guided strolls through the local markets that flourish here. Every day provides multiple new opportunities to indulge in the rich culinary world of Burgundy & Provence—so bring your appetite and we’ll see you onboard!
TAKE ME THERE... Go to foodie heaven on this brand-new French itinerary and sail the vineyard dotted Rhône from only $3,395 per person. Departing July 4, 2020. Discover our Flavours of Burgundy & Provence river cruise at emeraldwaterways.com or call us on 877 796 8403 Page 17

What do you love most about our Star-Ships?
What do you love most about our Star-Ships?
I was wowed by the stunning decorations in the lobby, the spacious lounge, and the comfort of my cabin. But my favorite part had to be the Sun Deck. It was so nice lounging outside and watching the amazing views pass by. Not only was the ship itself relaxing and comfortable, but the crew and the service they provided is what really was the cherry on top. They were there for my every need, sometimes without me even having to ask!
Nothing competes with the elegant and yet comfortable ambiance that you’re greeted with when you first board the ship. The innovative and contemporary themes delivered by both the décor and culinary options are also something that really spoke to me.
What is your favorite destination and why?
My favorite destination is South East Asia, especially now with the addition of the new Emerald Harmony. The itineraries that are offered each give such an insightful look into the villages and people in Vietnam and Cambodia.
My favorite destination I’ve been to with Emerald Waterways is Rüdesheim, Germany. The main center of the town is very quaint with cafes, restaurants, shops and beer gardens. Also, since it’s known for its winemaking, there were many vineyards, which could be seen while taking a cable car ride up to the top of the hill. The best part was the amazing view from the top of all the vineyards as well as the Rhine River.
