Meet some of our Arctic and Scotland Discovery Team experts

Baldur Thorvaldsson
Polar Guide and Marine Mammal Lecturer

There’s a remarkable power to sustainable and ethical wildlife tourism. It really encourages people to appreciate the world around them in a fully-immersive way. As a marine naturalist and polar guide with an MSc degree in Ecotourism, Baldur has 50 polar voyages to date. He has guided hundreds of whale-watching tours in his home country of Iceland, Norway and the Azores, and observed over 50 species of marine mammals. Much like the Scenic guests, for Baldur working as Discovery Leader really means no two days are the same. Every day is a new discovery of watching wildlife in their natural habitat. You just never know what you will see that day.
Jonathan Fuhrmann
Geology, Glaciology, Lecturer, Assistant Discovery Leader
Jonathan has worked on expedition cruise ships on all seven continents since 2015, and in that time his love for the Polar regions and great mountain ranges has deepened beyond belief. Wanting to know more about the earth hadn’t always been his journey. Jonathan initially started an Economic degree at the University of Cambridge, but soon switched focus to Geography, completing a MPhil in Glaciology at the Scott Polar Research Institute. Today, Jonathan enjoys speaking on subjects ranging from glaciology and geology to astronomy, volcanology and photography. He hopes to give Scenic guests a deeper understanding of the beautiful wild landscape and its importance to our planet.

Pepe Rojas Ornithologist & Lecturer

As an ornithologist and field researcher, Pepe has dedicated most of his life to nature and conservation. Leading many expeditions on land and sea, from the Polar regions to the Amazon rainforest, he takes joy in leading guests into the lesser explored parts of the world. Originally from Peru, his love for the Arctic was instantaneous. Pepe fell in love with its unrivaled beauty, created by the landscape and light. The native wildlife in this limitless ice scape is truly outstanding. He is an avid bird watcher, growing up watching and listening to West Peruvian Doves, Long-tailed Mockingbirds and Rufous-collared Sparrows on the Pacific coast of his hometown in Lima. It is something that still bewitches him today, like the iconic spoonbilled sandpipers, a bird that breeds only in the Polar regions.

Dr. Terence Christian Historian, Archaeologist, Discovery Leader
Terence’s first adventure abroad took him across Scandinavia. From that moment, he was bitten by the travel bug and has since explored the majority of the world’s continents and oceans as an expedition leader, expedition guide, Zodiac driver and even as a bear guard. As a conflict archaeologist and military historian, he examines the remnants of the past. His most extensive archaeological research focuses on the history and archaeology of the 18th- to early 21st-century. With a particular interest in global conflict, historic preservation, aviation archaeology, experimental archaeology and historic ballistics. Getting beneath the surface of a region is like stepping back in time and truly knowing its journey to today.

Late morning
No two excursions are alike. Your Discovery Leader are alert to changing opportunities from beluga whales suddenly appearing, to the ‘crack!’ of glacier fronts calving they are flexible enough to get you there. Monitoring weather, sea state and ice, they will safely guide and share their insights into the region’s environment. Given the range of on board expertise, our Discovery Team can tailor each excursion to your interests.

The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by continents – and you can explore them all on our ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse.
The European continent enjoys Norwegian fjords and photogenic fishing villages. Svalbard’s colorful tundra, reindeer, polar bears and walrus. Greenland and the High Canadian Arctic’s spectacular icebergs and glacier-carved valleys, musk ox and paleoEskimo camps. Discover Iceland and Scotland’s awe inspiring waterfalls, Viking heritage, evocative volcanic landscapes and rejuvenating thermal pools.
Explore the breathtaking scale of the High Canadian Arctic in Lady Franklin Island with some of the oldest seacliffs, enjoy walrus and polar bears on Monumental Island and explore Aptapok Islands birdlife. Discover the wild-flower tundras and wildlife as you enjoy northwest Greenland and Baffin Island.
Franz Josef Land is a harsh and breathtakingly beautiful region of glacial valleys, wildflower-speckled tundra, moss, lichen, and stone covered beaches, magnificent rocky headlands and vast polar deserts. For the adventurous soul seeking to leave the trappings of human society behind, the untouched wilderness and extraordinary wildlife of Franz Josef Land await.
Across the top of the Asian continent is the legendary Northeast Passage, until recently the domain of nuclear-powered icebreakers most of the year, but thanks to climate change, can be ice-free in summer. From Wrangel Island, the world’s highest density of polar bear dens, traverse the Arctic Ocean, setting foot in places few have visited: Medvedie, the Novosibirskie Islands, Severnaya, Novaya Zemlyas and Franz Josef Land. These wild places are inhabited by polar bears, walrus, seabirds, like tufted puffins and rhinoceros auklets, and Russian scientists living in weather-worn stations left over from the Cold War.
Scattered along the rugged coastline, beautiful, fiercely loved and utterly unique are the islands of Scotland, which will take your breath away. Great Britain’s most northerly islands, the Shetlands are an intriguing mix of Norwegian and Scottish history influenced by a Viking past, containing some of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in Scotland. Some difference to be aware of between Antarctica and the Arctic are the polar bears. Marine mammals spend most of their lives on the Arctic Ocean sea ice hunting seals, walrus, even whales in the frigid waters and come ashore to give birth to their cubs.
As well as Arctic destinations, here are some seasonal highlights to help you decide which voyage to choose:
Early Summer
June – Early July
On seabird cliffs of Norway and Scotland, puffins, gannets and guillemots feed chicks. Humpback whales follow the Gulf Stream north along the Norwegian coast, while fast ice breaks out of the deeper fjords. Snow free areas across the Arctic attract migratory birds and polar bears and cubs emerge from dens.
The Arctic region experiences almost 24 hours of sunlight. Explore the diverse Arctic wildlife, such as lemmings and polar bears, with the ringed seal being the lone year-round marine inhabitant.
Midsummer
Mid July – Early August
Millions of migratory birds fill flyways in Europe and North America. Seabird cliffs are noisy with growing chicks. Algal blooms attract ringed, bearded and harp seals. On Wrangel Island and across Canada, polar bears teach cubs to hunt. Arctic wildflowers bloom and walrus crowd ice floes as polar bears stalk seals in pack ice around Svalbard. Long days make Iceland an ideal destination for photographers.
In Franz Josef Land every year, around five million migratory birds nest on the archipelago. A birdwatcher’s paradise, providing shelter to over 41 species. The underwater world is similarly pristine – a feeding ground for an abundance of marine mammals, including some of the world’s rarest whale species. The islands are also a sanctuary for the two great Arctic giants, the polar bear and the walrus.
Late Summer
Mid August – Early September
Humpback, bowhead, grey and beluga whales feed off continental coasts before migrating south. Arctic foxes scour the base of seabird cliffs in search for late-season chicks. Warm daytime temperatures encourage spectacular calving of glacier fronts, tundra walks turn up ripe berries and sunsets begin to light up the evening sky
Scotland is perfect for those who love keeping an eye out for wildlife. With its fabulous big five including the red squirrel, red deer, golden eagle, otter and harbor seal. Scotland’s wildlife can be spotted in the sky, the harbors, the beach, the mountains and even the road.
Discover Svalbard

Halfway between Norway and the North Pole lies an enchanting archipelago swept by warm Gulf Stream waters along its west coast; frigid pack ice from the north, polar desert winds from the east and lush sea breezes from the south.
Svalbard is so remote not even Paleo-Eskimos reached there and despite later periods of shorebased whaling, hunting, trapping, mining and scientific expeditions, much remains a pristine wilderness. It’s ours to explore in ultra-luxury from Scenic Eclipse.

Mountainous Spitsbergen, the largest island in the archipelago, dominates Svalbard’s northwest corner. At its heart is Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest, and the world’s most northerly settlement. As perpetual summer daylight bathes surrounding mountainsides, admire Longyearbyen’s colorful houses and fascinating museums before setting sail down Isfjorden.
Due to the extraordinary nature of Svalbard, especially fast-changing weather and ice conditions, our Expedition Voyage itinerary is flexible, with the Captain and Discovery Leader working together to give you experiences that exceed your expectations. Here are some of the highlights that await you. Enjoy breathtaking scenery from your suite’s private verandah as Scenic Eclipse navigates spectacular waterways like Magdalena Fjord, and join Discovery Team specialists on Zodiac cruises along calving ice fronts of the Waggonway or 14th July glaciers. As you slowly move among the brash ice and icebergs, watch for polar bears on shore and reindeer grazing on tundra hills.
In Kingsfjorden, we may visit Ny Ålesund, a mining town turned polar research center, or farther north, Amsterdamoya, where our Discovery Team historian leads us to Smeerenburg (literally Blubber Town,) the remains of a 17th Century Dutch whaling settlement where walrus often haul out. Just across the channel are the ruins from the Swedish balloon expedition base camp where Andrée and his two co-pilots launched, never to be seen alive again. Today, delightful harbor seals remain to entertain. North of Spitsbergen, Scenic Eclipse aims for the Arctic pack ice, an ethereal world where walrus bob on ice floes, polar bears hunt seals and beluga whales rise in open leads. Scenic Eclipse is built to Polar Class 6 standards and its state-of-the-
art design allows us to push deeper into the pack thus improving our chance to see more and reach places other ships can’t, including beyond 80 degrees latitude to Seven Islands, Svalbard’s northernmost island group.

If ice conditions allow, thrill to a passage down Hinlopen Strait which separates Spitsbergen from Nordaustlandet, an ice-capped polar desert where female polar bears and cubs prowl. Vegetation is sparse, but fossils are many and walrus frequently sleep on its cobbled beaches. Across the way are soaring birdcliffs that literally buzz with some 200,000 nests of Brünichs guillemots, kittiwakes and gulls. Carry binoculars to spy Arctic foxes scavenging for fallen eggs and chicks along the base.

On Svalbard’s south side, visit Sundneset, a fertile plain covered in green mosses and delicate flowers including the yellow marsh saxifrage, moss campion, bell-heather and elegant sunburst lichen. Round South Cape, the most southerly point of Spitsbergen, to explore the deep fjords of Hornsund and Bellsund, where reindeer graze on tundra near preserved trappers huts, puffins join guillemots on bird cliffs and beluga whales rise like ghosts beneath ice fronts. Focus on the wonders of Svalbard in our Arctic in Depth voyage or combine it with explorations of other destinations like the Norwegian Fjords, Greenland’s stunning east coast and the thermal wonders of Iceland. No matter which Arctic cruise you choose, traveling in 6-star ultra-luxury on the World’s First Discovery Yachts™, accompanied by up to 20 Discovery Team specialists keen to share their expertise and enthusiasm for special places, will leave you with indelible memories to treasure.

Discover Greenland & Canadian High Arctic

Enter a world of breathtaking grandeur where smooth rock walls rise over one mile to monolithic spires, colossal glaciers calve aquamarine icebergs 328 feet high, vast tundra feeds musk oxen and reindeer and waterways abound with whales and seals.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is draped in the planet’s second largest ice sheet and cut by the greatest fjords on Earth. From Northeast Greenland National Park (the world’s largest) situated south along the east coast, fjord systems wind up to 217 magical, often ice-laden, miles from the coast.
There are over 35,000 islands in this remote Canadian Arctic Archipelago, with Baffin Island being the fifth-largest island in the world. Baffin Island offers incredible scenery; mountains, fjords, glaciers and pack ice. Making up a wilderness area that provides home for rare wildlife including: muskox, walrus, beluga whales and the polar bear.
Scenic Eclipse, The World’s First Discovery Yachts™ is designed and built to Polar Class 6 standards, making it easy to explore these remote regions, operating in places other ships can’t reach, like Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord early in the season. This red-rock wonderland of wind and wave sculpted icebergs is a secret passage to Kong Oskar Fjord, where your
expert Discovery Team will lead walks across blossoming tundra to encounter musk oxen families and pure white Arctic hare. Learn what life was like for nomadic Paleo Eskimos who inhabited the region for more than 4,000 years. Visit Inuit hunting camps abandoned two centuries ago, so wellpreserved that circular stone tent rings, winter houses, bear-proof meat caches and grave sites can still be seen. Discover the riveting exploration history of the land that never melts as you explore the Canadian Arctic, home to a wealth of wildlife and rugged, pristine landscapes.
Listen as your Discovery Team historian regales you with tales of polar exploration, from Fridtjof Nansen and Otto Sverdrup’s ski crossing of the Greenland Ice Sheet in 1888, to their drift across the Arctic Ocean on board the specially designed Fram. Sverdrup’s Fram II scientific expedition, which spent four years exploring north Greenland, is an epic tale.
Delight in a warm welcome to communities like remote Ittoqqortoormiit, where Inuit hunters, trappers and fishermen keep traditions alive. Narsaq, on Tunulliarfik Fjord, where Norseman Erik the Red first settled and spend time on deck relishing the flight of fulmars as they accompany our passage.
Watch for the beautifully patterned great northern diver, the oldest bird species in the world, or its relative, the red-throated diver. Greenland is host to more than 60 species of birds, so ‘twitchers’ will be well-rewarded.
Transit Prins Christianssund, a narrow channel between Cape Farewell and mainland, are more than 62 mi. long and discover why Scenic Eclipse is truly a ultra-luxury discovery voyage. Relax on your private verandah with in-suite binoculars admiring magnificent granite walls and exquisite icebergs passing by. Or visit the Observation Lounge where Swarovski telescopes offer views of minke whales, or ringed and bearded seals hauled out on floating ice.
Greenland’s west coast is swept by warm Gulf Stream currents, offering more temperate climate and more populous towns including the capital, Nuuk. Join the Discovery Team on a guided tour through picturesque Old Harbor, find mummies and Inuit skin boats in the Greenland National Museum and local art in the Nuuk Art Museum and Katuaq cultural center.
From Ilulissat, a small village on Disko Bay, listen to the growl and thunder of massive icebergs calved from Sermeq Kujalleq, the world’s fastest and most active glacier, to fill Ilulissat Icefjord with grinding ice castles. Gain a close view of Greenlands Ice Sheet on an excursion from Kangerlussuaq, where the U.S. established several airbases during World War II. Your Discovery Team historian tells how the two countries forged stronger ties during the Cold War that continue today.
Whether approaching Greenland from Svalbard or Iceland on an Arctic Islands or Exploring the High Arctic voyage, memories of wild Greenland and the High Canadian Arctic will remain with you forever.

Discover Iceland & Scotland
Discover Iceland, the land of fire and ice. Situated between Norway and Greenland lies an enchanted isle, where sparkling glaciers and powerful waterfalls sculpt a landscape laid down by falling ash and molten lava; where warm Gulf Stream waters feed millions of seabirds and whales migrate in their thousands. Enjoy Scotland where you will witness glorious mountains and remnant stones, bagpipes and whiskey.
Discover a unique culture populated by Viking descendants, their Gaelic slaves and interloping pirates, who created the world’s longest continuous legislature. Listen to amazing tales of how local villagers pumped cool seawater onto lava streams advancing from nearby Eldfell volcano and thus saved their seaport. Our exclusive Scenic Enrich events offer unique and private shows that highlight Icelandic culture and folklore. Experience the many islands that dot Scotland from the wildlife to Celtic and Viking sites that the Scottish Isles are famous. Discover Northeast Passage & Franz Josef
Traverse nine time zones across the top of the world, pushing through iceladen waters to Arctic islands so remote few, if any, humans have ever visited. Feast on wild landscapes along the planet’s greatest migration paths where birds in the millions fly north to breed on lush river deltas and wind-swept sea cliffs. Step back in time to when woolly rhinoceros roamed the Great Arctic Plain and feel the weight of a mammoth tusk in your hands.
Accept the challenge of Crossing the legendary Northeast Passage and be rewarded with polar bear encounters and walrus crowding on ice floes. Meet Chukchi reindeer herders, Inuit fishermen and the scientists gathering high Arctic data from roughshod dwellings sometimes shared with wolverines, snowy owls and Arctic fox.

Only in the past couple of decades has this region become accessible enough for non icebreaker ships to make the crossing due to reduced Arctic Ocean pack ice. Purposebuilt for high latitudes with a Polar Class 6 rating and the latest uncompromising standards of any ultra-luxury vessel, Scenic Eclipse is the perfect Discovery Yacht to do so. Embarking from Nome, Alaska, cross the International Date Line in the Bering Sea and enter the Northeast Passage at historic Cape Dezhnev, the most easterly point of the Eurasian continent.
Sail north to Wrangel Island, designated a ‘zapovednik’ during Soviet times, it continues to enjoy the highest degree of environmental protection, for good reason. Untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age, its tundra boasts the Arctic’s greatest plant biodiversity, unchanged since mammoths made their last stand here 2,000 years ago. Home to the largest population of Pacific walruses, surrounded by waters alive with bowhead, grey and beluga whales, Wrangel and nearby Herald islands host the planet’s highest concentration of polar bear dens.
Your Captain and Discovery Team leader will assess ice, weather and sea depth conditions to identify possible excursions each day. Explore the magnificent fjords of some of the world’s most remote wilderness where Chukchi reindeer herders stroll and walrus hunters roam on Ayon Island. In

the Medvezie (Bear) Islands, enjoy great kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding near flocks of long-tailed ducks and bearded and ringed seals. Discerning hikers may walk to the imposing rock spires of Chetyryokhstolbovy Island or Zodiac cruise below sea cliffs where thousands of kittiwakes nest. Bennett Island, largest of the De Long Islands, was claimed for the United States by the ill-fated Jeanette Expedition in 1881, a claim not recognized today.
Admire tundra vegetation like saxifrages, buttercups, chickweeds and mountain sorrel in the Novosibirskie Islands and discover large walrus haulouts on Belkovsky Island. Have your in-suite binoculars on hand while crossing the Kara Sea. Nearby Nordenskjold Archipelago is named for Adolf Erik Nordenskjold, leader of the 1878-80 Vega Expedition, the first to navigate the Northeast Passage. The islands are popular with Arctic terns, purple sandpipers, herring gulls, sanderlings and other waders. Explore Isachenko Island in the Kirov Island group.

In Severnaya Zemlya, ‘Northern Lands,’ explore the last territorial discovery on Earth with walks up to glaciers, Zodiac cruising, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking in iceberg-laden fjords and sightings of Brant geese, snow buntings and Arctic skuas, always with an eye out for polar bears.

At Novaya Zemlya, largest of the Eurasian Arctic archipelagos, admire its glistening ice cap, massive walrus haulouts, bird cliffs bristling with Brunnich’s guillemots, kittiwakes and glaucous gulls. Zodiac cruise for views of calving glacier fronts, bearded seals and polar bears, or hike to spectacular vistas. Explore Franz Josef Land, the world’s most northernmost and most extraordinary archipelago. Home to five million seabirds, polar bears and walrus, it’s also been the staging post for polar explorations. Delight in your Discovery Team historians as they recount the epic tales from Nansen, Amundsen, Wellman, Ziegler, Tegetthoff and others who strived to find a way to the North Pole or across the Northeast Passage. Cruise the soaring bird cliffs of Rubini Rock and land at Cape Trieste to admire perfectly round geodes, rocks ranging from .5 in. to 1 in. diameter.
As you disembark from Scenic Eclipse, be proud that you are now a member of a very exclusive group who have successfully completed a crossing of the Northeast Passage.

Discover Iceland

Enter the land that is almost too magical to be true – an extraordinary land peppered with waterfalls, volcanoes, lava fields, geysers, geothermal pools, black sand beaches, mountains, fjords, dancing aurora lights, and Europe’s largest glacier. Here, trolls and elves are not mere ancient mythical beings, they are an intrinsic part of Icelandic culture and traces of Viking heritage are evident in everyday life.
The Golden Circle
The most sought after route to explore Iceland, the Golden Circle covers the three most iconic attractions of the country: the Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir Geothermal Area. Also along the way are several other lesser known, breathtaking wonders.

Thingvellir National Park is a place of geological, historical and cultural significance to Icelanders. The first Althing (the Icelandic parliament) session was held here in 930 AD. This is where the country declared its independence from Denmark in 1944, and the national park is the fascinating site of the continental drift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
The Golden Circle route gets its name from the Gullfoss Waterfall, Icelandic for “Golden Waterfall.” A walk along a narrow track offers spectacular close-up views of the two-tiered waterfall below. In sunny summer months, you can see a rainbow form across the cascading glacial waters, while during the winter months, the water freezes into undulating glassy waves.
The nearly 2 mi. wide geothermal field of Geysir Geothermal Area is home to the highly active Strokkur geyser which sprouts hot scalding water 100 feet into the air every 5-10 minutes. The original ‘Great Geysir,’ which lends its name to all the ‘geysers’ of the world, was known to hurl water over 200 feet into the air before it became dormant. Today, the 60 feet wide hole of The Great Geysir quietly steams.
Icelandic cuisine

Unsurprisingly, seafood forms a large part of the Icelandic cuisine, as do lamb and dairy. The country’s culinary innovations involving fish and lamb are limitless. The kjötsúpa, traditional lamb meat soup, is a favorite during winter months. The harðfiskur, dried fish jerky, is enjoyed as a snack with butter. Pylsur, the Icelandic hot dog, is a popular fast food among locals and tourists alike. And the skyr is a yogurt-like dairy product that serves as the perfect accompaniment to any meal. Icelanders love their ice cream and can be seen enjoying it even in the cold winter months.
